A Dog's Way Home by W. Bruce Cameron is a sweet, heartwarming book. Perfect for dog lovers and better than the movie (in my opinion). This novel follows Bella, a dog who desperately wants to reunite with her human and endures a lot of strife along her arduous journey.

This really didn't work for me, unfortunately. The perspective of Bella, the puppy, while adorable, really did not work for me. I was looking for a little more complexity than the childish perspective of a puppy, and ended up putting this down about 25% of the way through.

Did not read as sent to familiarize for possible review of the sequel, A Dog’s Courage. Love dogs, so love novels with dogs in the plot. Of course, knew how popular the movie was so thought I’d give a try. Regret that the prose did not excite as much as the premise. So, not a great match for my blog in which prose matters as much as the plot.

Please Note: Can’t give a rating because did not read. Since the only way to send feedback to explain why I didn’t review, rated a neutral 3 to be as fair as possible.

Another sweet book from Cameron. This - like so many of his others - show the depth of love man and dog share. I love this genre so much, and so do my students!

Thank you to Forge Books for providing me with a copy of A Dog's Way Home via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I must admit, I didn't read this book anywhere near as quickly as I should have, because I was under the mistaken impression that it was part of the "A Dog's Purpose" series and I hadn't yet read all of the other books.  I only recently realised it was a separate story altogether.

This beautiful, sad and funny story of Bella losing her person, Lucas, and making one incredible journey to try and find him again gave me all the feels.  Not only was this book sweet, especially the way it was told from the dog's point of view, it touched on so many important issues.   The unfairness of breed discrimination (something close to my heart), the complicated issue of feral cats, homelessness, mental health, the wonderful effect service and companion dogs can have on people in need and the pure love between a dog and their person.  So many of the characters in A Dog's Way Home were just so loveable.  Lucas and Olivia, Gavin and Taylor and of course Big Kitten.

I absolutely adored Bella's constant attempts to understand the world around her and words she heard from humans.  To learn what it meant to Do Go To Work, Do Your Business and especially to Do Go Home.

I read this whole book in one day and managed to make it halfway through the story before I cried for the first time. I'll hug my own dog a little tighter tonight, but I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet doggy read.

Very cute book, and not generally as sad as A Dog's Purpose. Loved Big Kitten. Cameron has a great handle on how it seems like dogs would really think.

Such a cute story of the love dogs have for their human parents and was definitely written for those who love dogs. The voice of Bella seemed believable as a dog as she tries to rationalize what is happening around her. Being a dog lover and having a fur baby of my own, I definitely felt for Bella’s confusion.

For most of the story, I found my eyes glued to the book’s pages as I saw things in Bella’s perspective. Seeing her caged up with so many other confused dogs saddened me, seeing her living in the wild made me feel scared for her, and the reuniting filled me with joy.

The animal love theme made me miss my dog even more as she is at her grandma’s for a while. Also, the theme of home was so strong that it even caused me to long for my home, as well. I love when authors can cause you feel a number of emotions just in one book.

One of the major things that I questioned throughout was the perspective. When there were inner thoughts, they were definitely Bella’s, however, when dialogue between people happened, it seemed out of place. Bella clearly didn’t understand most of the words that were being said, yet the reader gets to read all of the words. If the book is in Bella’s perspective, how would she be able to pick up on the dialogue? Perhaps, if the book was written from an outsider perspective, in the third-person, would make this more believable.

Overall, this was a quick and sweet read. I will definitely be looking for more of W. Bruce Cameron’s works! I would recommend this read to those who love and can sympathize with dogs and other furry friends.

Heads up. If you are an animal lover, this book will pull you in so many directions, emotionally. I love books that have non-human narrators and this story is told from the perspective of Bella, a mixed-breed dog who goes above and beyond to make her way back to her beloved man, Lucas. She has quite the adventure (sometimes, frighteningly so) and there are so many times I wanted to peek at the ending to find out if she does indeed make it home. On her journey, Bella makes many new friends, human and otherwise, and must determine which of these friends is going to help her find Lucas, and which ones will keep her from him. Cameron's writing perfectly describes the loyalty of a dog to their people and gives you a glimpse of just what might be going on in the mind of your pup. *ARC provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Bruce Cameron won my heart with A Dog's Purpose, and he doesn't disappoint with A Dog's Way Home. Yet another touching, heartfelt story about the love of animals. This was fantastic.

W. Bruce Cameron does it again! He is able to capture your heart from page one. I read this book easily in one sitting, laughing and crying my way through, while my own fur babies slept curled up beside me. This book tackles a great topic that isn't talked about enough.: Veterans, support dogs and breed discrimination. It's an entertaining read but more importantly it is an essential one.

I have a confession: I've never read a W. Bruce Cameron book before. I KNOW. But it gets worse! I did watch the movie. I absolutely loved A Dog's Purpose, even though I ugly cried through pretty much all of it. So when I stumbled on this, I had to read it, because it combines my two guilty pleasures: doggos and heartwarming reads.

A big thank you to Macmillan-Tor/Forge and NetGalley for an eARC of this book.

If you've read any of W. Bruce Cameron's other books in the A Dog's Purpose series, the same basic format applies to this one. It's told from the perspective of a dog. He's going to introduce you to a cute, fluffy doggo, make you fall in love, and then destroy all your feels. And he's really good at it.

This book does a great job of bringing attention to a lot of animal abuse problems that are often overlooked or not talked about. And being written from the point of a view of a dog means it's addressed from a unique perspective. The biggest one it tackles is the two-strike kill law for Pit Bulls in Denver, but there's plenty of other little things woven in along the way, as well. If you're an animal lover, it's sure to make your blood boil.

Still, this book has all the great warm feels that you would expect from a W. Bruce Cameron book. I actually thought I was going to get through the book mostly okay, but in the last quarter, he got me. He got me good. I can't say more because of spoilers, but rest assured, it is every bit the heartwarming read one has come to expect of the A Dog's Purpose books.

I felt like the voice was really well done, too. I've seen quite a few comments from people not liking it, and that's fair. Being from the point of view of a dog, the narration often involves short sentences and is more simplistic. You will find no long, flowing descriptions here. A few things about that, though. It makes the book incredibly easy to read. Also, it gives a really fresh way of looking at human interactions and things we take for granted. I mean, obviously we can't know for sure what a dog is thinking or how they view the world (unless you're Dr. Doolittle or Eliza Thornberry, anyway), but it was plausible enough where I really enjoyed it and seeing the things the narrator picks up on as a dog versus where a human might focus. I thought that was well done.

There were a few sticking points, though. Like ... the entire middle section of the book. It just dragged on and on and felt meandering. I wondered if we would ever get back to the main point. Several times, I set it down during this part and considered not picking it up again. The beginning? Fantastic. The ending? Brilliant. But the middle? Eh.

The resolution also felt incredibly easy and left me wondering why it wasn't done sooner? Things wrap up so cleanly and easily that I feel almost cheated. There's also no comeuppance for the big bad, and while it may seem petty, I am all about karma and retribution, okay? I demand vengeance!

All in all, A Dog's Way Home delivers on what it promises: W. Bruce Cameron's specific brand of heartwarming goodness with a (mostly) interesting plot.

This is a MUST read for dog lovers!!! I bawled my eyes out and laughed until my sides hurt. Bella will absolutely steal your heart!!! Her dedication, endurance, determination and love knows no bounds.

The story is sweet and pulls at one's heartstrings . There is a bit of The Incredible Journey and a bit of A Dog's Purpose to it. I loved that both cats and dogs are highlighted even though the main character and narrator is a dog named Bella. Just like the author's other books, the story is told from a dog's perspective so the writing style is short sentences, not a huge vocabulary and a bit childlike which makes this a good book for any age and those who might have a lower reading level. That is not to say that I did not enjoy this book, because I did. It is a bit different from the others I have read because this was one dog and one life, but what a life.

Several subjects were brought up and high current. The discrimination of Pitbull type dog breeds, the problems of feral animals, how they are treated and the fact that many animals are just abandoned as well as Service Animals for both physical and emotional support. Bella's story is wonderful. She is an abandoned dog who is taken in by her person, Ethan. It turns out that not only can she sense when a seizure is coming on, but has wonderful senses and is able to provide comfort to those in distress. The story is told from her point of view stating that she just wants to be with her person and have a purpose. Her journey when she is separated from Ethan is amazing. It has a lot of adventure, side trips, and new people along the way. There is humor in just the right places, action, mystery, some sadness but overwhelming happiness as well as hope. I did need a few tissues along the way, but it was not too bad. Being a dog lover, I loved this book. It was well plotted with characters that I both loved and disliked. For every animal lover there are those who don't like animals and some of those are in this book. If you enjoy animal stories, pick this one up. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Throughout his books, W. Bruce Cameron is always able to capture the pure spirit and voice of our four legged companions. However in A Dog's Way Home, Cameron was able to completely convey the spirit and essence of endurance, friendship, and ultimately, unconditional love. Bella was such an endearing voice and her bond with Lucas will always stay in the heart of this reader. An absolute must read for all!

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for the chance to read this book for an honest review.

I wish I could rate this book higher than a five, because I absolutely loved this book and love to read from the dog's perspective and once again W. Bruce Cameron has written a novel that I wished never ended as I fell in love with Bella and her human. This has been my favourite book written by Mr. Cameron to date.

The story is about Bella who starts her life as a stray, is taken in by a kind stranger, who annoys an individual at animal control and that individual from Animal Control inaccurately labels Bella a pit bull. Bella is taken away from the humans she loves and must travel thousands of miles to get back to the people she loves.

The story is uplifting, sad and funny. Mr. Cameron did a wonderful job of including important issues in the book which address breed discrimination laws. I also enjoyed Bella being used to help veterans struggling with PTSD. I was swept up by Bella's story of making her way home

What a wonderful story! I can’t help imagining how hard could it be for a dog to get separated from its owner and experience what Bella did in this book. One of our neighbours lost their dog too, leaving her puppies unattended. We ended up adopting two of her six puppies while the rest went to other people. I certainly hope that she gets back with us to see how wonderful her puppies are. It’s been almost a year now since that dog was lost.

This is a book for all animal lovers. I am a fan of the authors work and was thrilled to receive this to read for review from Net Galley. The opinions are my own.
The author has written another great book based on a rescue dog . For all of us that rescue animals this is a story that is so familiar to us. I was crying, laughing and could not stop reading this book . Having owned rescue animals all my life I knew this book would be as touching as his other work and it does not disappoint. The author beautifully involves us in the life of a rescue dog and the life of animals that live on the street due to human neglect.
Bruce Cameron has written this series told from the dogs point of view . The book is so much more than the thoughts and feelings of a dog. The novel examines current issues from vets with PTSD and therapy certification, to breed discrimination (BSL), feral population, abuse and rescue as well as fostering animals. All of these issues are important and critical .

The story starts with a litter of puppies sharing a "den" with feral cats and kittens. Unfortunately, the den is the area of condemned housing when workers come to destroy the site. Mother Cat becomes the first of many major characters in the story, both human and animal, who contribute to this beautiful narrative of Bella on her mission.

Many of the supporting animals contribute to her survival in her life and become a part of the amazing characters Cameron has brought to life. Belle's long journey through the mountains of Colorado to return to her one special person takes her through many experiences, The author has a masterful writing style that places you with Belle and on her journey with her. There are many strong, well-developed characters that drive this book. Both animal and human. I root for the animals.
It's a feel-good book, a well-plotted book, with strong characters brought to life. The novel gives all animal lovers a book to cheer for as we go on a journey with Belle. The conclusion had me crying m eyes out. I highly recommend this book to any animal lover. Truly only a animal lover can benefit so much from this wonderful book. Its compassion for animals throughout is what touches your heart.

Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The story is sweet and pulls at one's heartstrings but I think you need to be a dog lover to really enjoy this book. Just like the author's other books (loved [book:A Dog's Purpose|7723542]), the story is told from a dog's perspective. Which makes the writing style childlike. Short, simple sentences. Another issue I had with this book were the humans in the story. I did not like any of the characters in it and I especially found Lucas annoying.

I found the book entertaining but I did not enjoy this book as much as the other 2 that I had read. Maybe the writing style is getting redundant to me.

A classic story of unwavering loyalty and incredible devotion, A Dog’s Way Home is a beautifully told, charming tale that explores the unbreakable bond between us and our pets.
I just loved reading this book about an extremely amazing dog. I have a special feeling towards this breed of dog who is usually a misrepresented. To see this dog as a doggy heroine made me so happy and brought back some great memories.
This is the second book written by W. Bruce Cameron, the author of the #1 New York Times and the USA Today bestselling novel A Dog's Purpose. I cannot wait for the movie to come out and read more of Mr. Cameron’s books.
