Omg omg omg .......... this book was amazing I could not put it down I read every word on the edge of my seat I loved the story line, i loved the way the story just kept us guessing all the way threw I loved all the twists and turns and would defiantly recommend this book it was so believable and kept the reader engaged I love it
This was first published as Blood Lies.
Again I’ve jumped into a series that I hadn’t realised .
But this is a new case although I may have missed out on the establishment of the main characters and what went before.
It’s a decent plot. Child missing, been abducted, and I’ve read far too many of these so I may not have been the right audience at this moment in time. But on its merits of excitement it’s high up there. Writing, yes this author knows how to capture the reader.
Very well done.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for this arc.
I had read the 3rd Tom Mariner story (but not the first 2 yet) and found it very compelling. This one picks up almost immediately after Killer Lies and answers the big questions I had at the end of Killer Lies, but left me with some new ones.... I'll just have to keep reading!
While the "action" in Baby Lies wasn't quite as intense as Killer Lies, it still got fairly frenetic at times. Not feeling completely beaten up at the end was good for me. The characters and their relationships continued to evolve and dissolve... I'll just have to keep reading!
Great novel. The first book by Chris that I’ve read but it won’t be the last. Really enjoyed how all the different threads eventually tied up.
Book 4 in the series I have thoroughly enjoyed them all and this latest one didn’t disappoint in any way. I am a massive Peter James fan and the way Chris Collette writes grips me in exactly the same way
This is a brilliant series I would recommend them all this particular book I stayed up and read it until 3am to finish it as I just could not stop turning the pages
Please Chris don’t stop writing about my new favourite detective Tom Mariner
Please read this and you will not be disappointed I promise
I hadn't read any of Chris Collett's previous books in this series and I did think I would find it difficult to understand the characters. Not so. This was an excellent book and although there were references to the characters' previous cases, it did not spoil the enjoyment of this book. I will definitely be looking out for the previous books in the DI Mariner series.
Great plot and high paced read. Good interesting storyline to keep you interested. Interesting characters that all fit well together.,
I struggled initially with Baby Lies but decided to stick with it as the description sounded fab. Glad I stuck with it as I really enjoyed it in the end with some great twists and turns throughout.
Baby Lies is a great suspense/crime book. I loved the well written plot. The author is new to me but I definitely will be reading earlier books in this series. I recommend to readers who enjoy a good crime story.
I received this book from net galley for an honest review.
This book was very good. It has lots of twists and turns like great mysteries do. Tom Mariner, one of the main characters was easy to relate to and seemed very real in a sense that he had baggage and real life stuff going on. This book is one in a series but I found it great as a stand alone read as well. I enjoyed this so well though that I will definitely be reading the others in this series now. #netgalley #goodreads #booknerd
It wasn’t so very long ago that I hadn’t read any books by Chris Collett but I am now a huge fan. So imagine my excitement when I was asked if I would like to take part in the blog tour for ‘Baby Lies’. I’ll give you a clue and say that the happy dance wasn’t pretty. Anyway I digress so back to my review I do go.
I have to say that I developed something of a soft spot for DI Tom Marriner and took to him from the start. He’s a dedicated police officer, who leads from the front. He works well as part of a team and doesn’t hesitate to muck in to do his fair share of the work when necessary. Marriner has a gut instinct that is often spot on. He has a keen nose for a clue or for something that might be amiss. If something doesn’t feel right then it usually isn’t and Marriner doesn’t rest until his curiosity has been satisfied and the matter has been fully investigated. Marriner has a partner, Anna and their relationship has hit a bit of a bump in the road so to speak. They recently suffered the tragedy of a miscarriage, which hit them hard. Marriner being the typical man has a stiff upper lip and doesn’t talk about his feelings and he wants to appear strong & supportive of Anna. As you can imagine the miscarriage has hit her hard as she was desperate to start a family. The main case featured in this book affects Marriner very much. A baby is kidnapped from a creche near to the hospital. The mother was lecturing at the hospital and put the baby into the creche whilst she taught the lesson. Somebody claiming to be the mother then entered the creche and took the baby. Marriner tries to investigate thoroughly but his intention Is thwarted somewhat by the staffing arrangements at the creche, the apparent lack of witnesses and the lack of adequate security footage. Marriner faces a race against time to get the baby back before something happens to it. What has happened to the baby? Will Marriner get to the bottom of this case? What is really going on? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
To say that I enjoyed reading this book is a massive understatement. The story hit the ground running and maintained the pace throughout. The main storyline really did appeal to me in the sense that I used to work in the child protection field and so I really felt like a member of the investigating team from the start. I was wanting to ask my own questions of the creche staff and I regularly found myself ‘arguing’ with the book. I know, I know it’s a work of fiction but the story seemed so convincing that I really did feel as though I was ‘living’ the case. I was hooked on this book from the moment I started reading and my sole focus was on the book until the moment I turned the back page so to speak. I hadn’t realised quite how quickly I was reading the book until I looked up from my Kindle and saw that I had cleared over half the book. The page numbers just seemed to be flying past. Reading ‘Baby Lies’ really felt like being on a rollercoaster ride with all the highs, the lows and the moments where you have to put your hands over your eyes as you genuinely fear what is going to happen next, but you realise that you have to continue/ read on if you want to find out how the story is going to end.
In short I absolutely loved reading the riveting ‘Baby Lies’ and I would wholeheartedly recommend this author and this series to other readers, but particularly to those who love reading police procedurals. Chris Collett is right up there on my list of must read and favourite authors. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 5* out of 5*.
*thank you to Netgalley and Joffe Books for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
3 stars.
For the most part, this was a good story. But at about the half way mark it started to, still be ok, but less interesting. I can't go more I to it as there would be spoilers but I will say that the ending wrapped things up most things quite well even though it did surprise me when the story actually ended because it felt rather sudden. I'd imagine the next book in the series to pick up where this left off but I cant say for sure that it will but that would explain the sudden end. I liked the characters and Chris Collett does know how to tell a good story. This is my second book from her and while I considered book 1 in this series to be 2 stars, I still wanted to give her books another try and I'm glad I did. If you liked the sound of the description of this story, I would suggest giving it a go.
I enjoyed this book, the story is great and I was gripped by the plot!
I do like the character of Tom Mariner and he bring a lot of personal baggage with him that I think makes him a more rounded character with some depth. he works really well with the team he has and I really like their interaction.
This is the fourth book in the series and it is definitely one of my favourite crime series out there at the moment - four stars from me for this one and it is another great addition to the series!! This book is fine to be read as a stand alone.

DI Mariner and his team have just busted a brothel where the girls are there against their will.. He is supposed to take a few weeks vacation with his girlfriend Anna, those plans fall through when a call comes in that a baby named Jessica was abducted from a day care, nursery.
.
While investigating the abduction they start to see possible links to the brothel and others. This story has a bit of everything, abduction, illegal adoption, human trafficking, prostitution, blackmail, murder and just enough personal drama. I found the book exciting, but I didn't care for the ending. It seemed to just stop abruptly.
This was the first book I've read in the series and I look forward to reading previous and future books in the series..
This is the fourth book featuring DI Mariner and his team and can be read as a standalone but I always enjoy it better if I have familiarised myself with the characters. This book involves a case of human trafficking but also includes child abduction, illegal adoption and extortion. It is a fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns and false leads to keep you guessing. Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I didn't realise this book was part of a series so I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books. Still good though and worth a read
I haven’t read any of the books in the series before. I was given this book by Netgalley on exchange for my honest review. I am so glad I was given the chance because I loved the book and couldn’t wait to find out what happened. This book kept my attention throughout. The main character of not just this book, but the series, Mariner, is interesting and I could tell a lot of this book touched on other books in the series. However, the main story in this book was enough that I didn’t need to have read the rest of the series to be able to grasp this particular book. What I thought was the main story and what may happen ended up being different from what actually happened. There were other stories going on also and spoiler alert....several tie together. This book is so good! I love it!!!
I really loved this book! Excellent story with brilliant main characters. I would recommend this book.
Excellent book, and fourth in the D.I. Tom Mariner series! I have thoroughly enjoyed all four books. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a murder mystery book, and is centered round an abducted child.
