4 intriguing and scandalous stars to She Was the Quiet One!

Somehow there is always a fascinating story to be told about a boarding school, and She Was the Quiet One is set at The Odell School in New Hampshire.

Rose and Bel Enright are twins who have recently lost their parents. They are enrolling at Odell, and soon after, they develop a fierce rivalry. One sister is known for her beauty, while for the other it is her intelligence. At the same time, the students of Odell are living a life without rules or boundaries, and their collective disorderly actions are swelling towards tragedy.

Sarah Donovan is the wife of Heath, a teacher at the school. Her husband is power-hungry and sees Odell as an opportunity to climb a ladder and gain fame. Reluctantly, Heath also has his doubts about Sarah. Gossip spread as the students make a bet involving Heath, and Sarah wonders if she ever knew her husband and of what he is capable.

The scandals reach a fever pitch when someone is murdered, and of course, there is a long list of suspects.

She Was the Quiet One is not a twisty-turny book. Its flavor is in the suspense of analyzing the scandal and watching it unfurl. Michele Campbell’s taut writing style compelled me to read from start to finish, and I found the epilogue to be a juicy little twist at the end.

I was curious about Michele Campbell's debut so I was glad I got the chance to read her second book. She Was the Quiet One was an okay book, an overall entertaining read but nothing spectacular. I had a good time reading it but it probably won't have a lasting impression on me,

I liked how the theme of the love and rivalry between the two twins was explored. Bel and Rose were both complex characters, sympathetic but also hateful at times, and I could understand their actions even if I often disagreed with them. If you like books which explore the complexity of sisterly relationship, you should enjoy this one.

The mystery aspect wasn't very satisfying. I loved how the book was constructed, with police interviews mixed with regular narration, and I was curious to see the resolution. However, I predicted everything that happened, and the culprit and the motive especially were very obvious. I was expecting some big twists, but I was disappointed. The epilogue also felt very unnecessary. I don't know if it was meant to be shocking, but it didn't add much to the story.

I would try this author again, but this book wasn't amazing. It will probably be more appreciated by people who don't read many mysteries.

She Was the Quiet One by Michele Campbel is a well written mystery story with a knock your socks off plot, that will keep you page turning until the wee hours of the morning! You'll have to get a score card though, because there are lots of well written characters with big personalities through out the book.

With the tragic death of their mother, twin sisters Rose and Bel Enright are sent to off to The Odell elite boarding school by rich Paternal Grandmother. After all, it's a family tradition, going back decades.

Both girls are very different to one another..Rose smart and studious and Bel wants to be liked and in with the popular crowd ..wants to be where the action is!. When Bel gets in way too deep with 'the wrong crowd' this mystery drama turns messy, causing the twins too turn against one another, and kids at school to take sides! With lies, chaos, and murder you'll be in the edge of your seat waiting for the next move!
For what happens..... you'll have to get a copy of this awesome book of your own and plan on a sleepless night or two! Gets a firm 5 stars!

Great twisty psychological novel. It had me going up until the shocker at the end. I love books that you think you know the outcome, only to have it surprise you.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Wow! What a thriller! I was hooked from the beginning. Twin sisters at a prestigious boarding school, and handling it completely differently. Rose was by the book and good student. Bel decided to hang with the bad girls. Then she got in over her head. Complex, intense and emotionally charged. A must read!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This one really kept me on my toes! Just when I think I figured out the who-dun-it, I was second guessing. In the end, I did figure it out, but not before going round and round in my head! This is the first novel that I've read by the author and look forward to reading more of her work.

Good book. Liked the story line, although predictable. It was a quick, enjoyable read, but I feel like more could have been done to make the story more intriguing.

This book was difficult for me to get into. I felt like the entire time I was reading, I was a long long buildup to what was supposed to happen.

The story line was enjoyable, however it was hard for me to connect with the characters.

Rose and Bel are twins who have recently lost their mother. They journey from California to Connecticut to live with their wealthy paternal grandmother(who they had very little contact with since their father died). They have barely settled into their new home when their grandmother informs the girls that she has enrolled them at Odell Academy, a prestigious boarding school. Their mother was barely able to make ends meet and they know very little about the world they are about to enter. Think rich privileged teens, some who are bullies that you can't escape at the end of the day.
Rose throws herself into succeeding academically while Bel makes friends with older senior girls with bad reputations. The twins tenuous relationship continues to unravel to the point where they barely speak. When one of them is murdered, is it possible her sister was to blame?
We know from the beginning that one of the girls will die, but the author cleverly made it seem like it was Rose, then it was Bel. There is no shortage of other potential suspects and there were many twists and turns that kept me guessing whodunit and why. It is the first book I have read by Michele Campbell and She Was the Quiet One was an entertaining beach read.
I received a digital review copy from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley.

Compelling story, one that I definitely wanted to keep reading to see what happened. Only constructive comment is I almost felt like there were too many characters to keep track of, I felt like the main characters could have been developed more if not as much time was spent on peripheral players. I struggle a bit to say exactly who I would recommend it to- although it’s about high schoolers, the content is definitely adult and I’m not completely sure who the target audience is. That said, I definitely enjoyed it, it was an interesting story!

She Was the Quiet One by Michele Campbell is the second book I’ve read of hers. I would consider it to be a mystery/suspense thriller. I really enjoyed reading it. It held my attention the entire way through. It has some twists and turns that literally keep you guessing. I thought for sure I had it all figured out, but was I ever wrong! It’s not until the very end that the author lets you know what actually took place. I love stories like this! I would like to thank NetGalley and author Michele Campbell for allowing me the privilege to read an ARC and express my honest opinion. I believe anyone who likes the suspense/thriller genre will enjoy this book. I know I did and I am looking forward to reading what this author comes up with next!

How will they manage their sisterhood in the face of all these changes and secrets?

She Was the Quiet One explores the complexity of human relationships through the lens of a mystery. Rose and Bel are twins from California hoping for a new start at a prestigious boarding school. Sarah is the wife of one of the boarding school's teachers. It's these two relationships that are at the forefront of our story when we discover one of the twins has been murdered.

Which twin is dead? Could the other twin be to blame? How about the teacher? What was the motive? These questions keep part one moving at a comfortable pace as the reader is left to begin the great Whodunit guessing game. The dynamics of the relationships between Bel and Rose / Sarah and her husband create suspense, but when you get to part two it seems to be a lot of the same. I found I was predicting things a lot more as the story went on and some things were way too convenient (a pet peeve of mine when reading mystery/thriller)

I'd recommend it for readers looking to venture from YA to more "adult" books, as I feel She Was the Quiet One is darker and more adult without being intimidating.

“She Was the Quiet One” by Michele Campbell is a captivating, intriguing and intense novel. The Genres for this Novel are Fiction, Mystery, Suspense and Thriller. The timeline for this story is mostly the present and goes back to the past only when it pertains to the characters or events of the story. The setting of the story is mostly in The Odell School, a private, New Hampshire boarding school.

The author describes the characters as complex, and complicated. Rose and Bel Enright are fraternal twin sisters that are now orphans, and are sent by their grandmother to The Odell School. Both sisters are as different as night and day. At the prestigious boarding school, there are some groups of students that don’t abide by the rules. The senior students in this group are mean and cruel and bully and belittle the younger students. They have a negative attitude and a feeling of entitlement. .One of the sisters is immediately accepted into this group, even though she is younger. This strains the relationship with the other twin. What is even worse, is that this group is determined to alienate both sisters from each other.

The school has hired the Donovans, both teachers with young children to supervise and help control the bad influence and character at the school. Mr. Donovan has a magnetic and charismatic personality, and the students love him. Mrs. Donovan is more reserved. They have hidden past secrets. Mr. Donovan’s goal is to be the Headmaster of the school, and he is extremely ambitious.

Many of the characters are suspicious. There are twists and turns, betrayals and lies. Some of the characters are ambitious, jealous, insecure, and unbalanced. Everything is not what it seems to be, and everyone is not who they seem to be. All these factors lead to disaster and tragedy.

I would recommend this edgy novel for those readers who enjoy suspenseful mysteries and thrillers. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

She Was the Quiet One is full of twist and turns. Rose and Bel are twins, but are different in every way. They are sent to a boarding school after their mother dies. Their world is turned upside down and each twin handles it differently. This was my first book to read by Michele Campbell and I look forward to reading more of her books.

This was my first Michelle Campbell book and I enjoyed it. The book was twisty and kept you guessing about which twin was dead until the very end. It also covers the complexities of sisterhood and teen drama. I would recommend this book to my friends as well as my book club. I feel like this could totally be a movie!

Let me start off by saying I enjoyed Michele Campbell's It's Always the Husband quite a lot and was excited to read her latest book. She Was the Quiet One starts with twins, Bel and Rose losing their mother and moving to Odell Academy, an elite boarding school that their grandma chose to send them to. Right from the beginning you know that one of these girls will be murdered in just a few short months after starting school. Rose and Bel do not get a long. Rose is an upstanding do-gooder and Bel is a wild troublemaker. Their paths split from the moment they step on campus, and never quite merge back together. After an incident that involves both twins, things devolve even more. This book is more than just a story about these two girls, but also a couple who head the dorm where these twins live, each one sort of taking sides with the girls. Heath Donovan, with his own troubled past, and Sarah Donovan, who stuck by her husband during his darkest days.

While I did enjoy the idea of the book, there were so many times that I wanted to shout at the characters for how naive and stupid they were being that it kind of made me dislike the book as a whole. Additionally, I thought that some of the occurrences in the book just would not have happened the way that they played out in this novel and the "twist" at the end was kind of a throwaway in my opinion. I was not invested enough in that aspect of this book for it to be shocking.

Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC.

Bel and Rose have been orphaned and then packed off to the Odell boarding school by their grandmother. Not the best situation but they go their separate ways, with Bel partying (for lack of a better word) and Rose studying, at least until the Donovans show up as house parents. Heath and Sarah like everyone to think they have the perfect marriage but....Heath should not be around young girls. There's a murder (of course) and then there's the question of who did it. No spoilers. This isn't too complicated but it's got some good drama going. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For fans of boarding school novels- and perhaps more for the YA reader than adults.
