Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book! Release date - July 31, 2018
I actually liked this one a good bit more than I was expecting! I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting, but something about the cover made me feel like I was just going to feel average towards this one. But the writing style was great, the mystery kept me reading, and the characters felt realistic and I actually cared what happened to them.
The writing style and storytelling reminded me a lot of [author:Liane Moriarty|322069]. We are told at the very beginning that at a boarding school (that reminded me a lot of Chilton from Gilmore Girls), one twin is dead and the other is the prime suspect in her murder, although she claims she is innocent. But we aren't told which one is which. Then through both narrative and flash-forward interviews with the police, the story leading up to this tragic event is revealed.
I really liked this storytelling concept, because it kept me reading to find out whether Bel or Rose is the one dead. The twins really don't get along, and throughout both make threats toward the other, making you wonder if one twin really did kill the other. And once it is revealed who is dead and what events led up to her murder, I didn't want to put the book down.
If I have one complaint it's that for most of the first half of the book, we are kept in the dark about almost everything, who is dead, how it happened, the circumstances surrounding the murder. But then we get to part 2, when it is revealed who died, and then from that point on we are told basically everything. The number one suspect is then practically innocent in the reader's eyes because we know all the details, who the victim was meeting, the circumstances leading up to her death, what the supposed murder afterwards, so that the reader knows more than any other character - including the police, the suspect, and all the other characters except the victim and the murderer. I would have preferred a little more to be withheld until the end, a little more, hm I wonder if it was this person or this person who was the murderer. I would have liked to be kept in suspense along with the characters. There aren't any twists past part 2, except a little bit in the epilogue that was interesting but didn't have much to do with the storyline as a whole.
Overall though, this really didn't dampen my enjoyment and I'll just chalk it up to a different storytelling choice than I'm used to in these types of books. I really did still enjoy the second half despite the lack of mystery just to see how all the events would play out.
I'm definitely glad I gave this book a try and was pleasantly surprised by it! I'd like to check out other books by Michele Campbell for sure.
I cannot thank St. Martins Press enough for this one!! It started off as very predictable (mean girls in boarding school), but quickly became a very twisty, suspenseful read! Two twins, one ends up dead. Which one, is not revealed until the end! Genius! It is extremely well plotted and there are a large number of suspects! I have had this author's first book, "It's Always the Husband" sitting on my 'to read' shelf for quite a while. I will definitely be pulling that one out now and look forward to more from Michele Campbell!
Bel and Rose are twins. That is probably the only thing that connects the two. Bel, being the rebel and wild child of the duo, has her fair share of problems, but she manages to slide by without much consequence in life. Rose, on the other hand is the more responsible straight A student who sometimes falls in the shadow of her rebellious twin.
After both parents pass away the twins are assigned to live with their grandmother who ships them off to boarding school. While there they find themselves in one of the most disturbing situations they have ever encountered. From murder, forbidden relationships and the flurry of high school living this story delivers a punch like no other!
I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking for a thriller/murder mystery then look no further. Michele Campbell delivered!
Jealousy, rivalry, the in crowd, the out crowd, petty, privileged girls all together in a boarding school which leads to murder and mayhem.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
4.5 stars! I loved this book - the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I guessed who done it! This was a very good read. I liked the characters and found this book to be quite a suspenseful page turner. While I guessed who done it - I was surprised by part of the ending! Excellent writing - I already own her other book Its always the Husband - just haven't had a chance to read it yet. It's going to the top of my TBR pile!
A tale of twins who lost their father at five years old are now reeling from the death of their mother. The only relative willing to help them is their paternal grandmother who was never fond of her son's choice of wife. Bel and Rose know this is the only place they will stay together. Who wants to adopt two teenage girls?
The girls are sent to Odell Academy, the school their father and grandfather attended. Bel hated Odell on sight. Darcy, a popu!ar senior took a liking to Bel and even invited her to sit with the seniors during meals. Rose became friends with her roommate another sophomore. Bel and Rose are both assigned to live in Moreland Hall. The dorm has a bad reputation of housing the troublemakers who are often legacies.
Sarah and Heath Donovan are appointed the new form heads. Sarah has Her doubts about accepting the new post but goes along with Heath who dreams of being headmaster one day. It does not escape the older girls that Heath is a good looking man. Darcy begins a who can bed Mr Donovan first contest. Mr Donovan finds out about the contest but ignores it thinking he can handle it on his own.
This is the perfect set up for disaster. What follows is worse than anyone involved ever even imagined would happen. The reader knows one of the twins is isolated in the infirmary. Some chapters are written by the isolated twin who never reveals who she is. This ramps up the suspense as the story progresses. I thought the characters were well developed and the pace was good.
The epigraph quote by Sylvia Platt was perfect, "The only quiet woman is a dead one." #SheWasTheQuietOne#NetGalley
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
When Bel and Rose Enright are sent to The Odell School, a prestigious private school, after the death of their mother, they quickly begin to drift apart. Bel falls in with the “wrong crowd” and is soon pulling pranks and risking suspension while Rose is towing the line and following the rules, almost too compulsively. The new dorm parents, Heath and Sarah, are adjusting to their new position at their alma mater, with Heath ambitiously trying to climb the ranks to headmaster. When one of the students is murdered, Rose is blamed but Sarah has her doubts. Could her husband be responsible? How much does she truly know the man she married? How far would he go to achieve his goals?
As with “It’s Always the Husband”, Campbell is back with a high-intensity, suspense-filled murder mystery. An unpredictable thriller, “She was the Quiet One” delves into the secrets people keep and how far they will go to keep them secret.
Initially, this novel started with Rose and Bel fitting in and adjusting to life at Odell, an elite private school. I know nothing about this life and in fact, the idea of an entire dorm full of adolescent, catty females had me ready to give up. But thank goodness, the novel’s drama and suspense started rather quickly. The plot shifted from the inner workings of the “popular” kids, to the murder of a student and how she got that way.
Bel and Rose Enright are both teenagers, but likable ones, and their inner dramas are true to life. Heath and Sarah Donovan have a seemingly perfect marriage, with many deep-rooted secrets. Sarah was far more patient and tolerant (kind of a patsy to be honest) than I would ever be, but she was also a character that I pitied and felt for throughout the novel.
Similar to “It’s Always the Husband”, the ending of this novel was succinct and final. Although the culprit was relatively predictable if you are a fan of this genre, the details were a mystery (until the end of course). The novel wrapped up in a nice pretty bow, with everyone getting their just desserts.
This novel was a pleasure to read, and I recommend Michele Campbell to anyone who enjoys tense, dramatic murder-mystery or “whodunit” thrillers. Following on the tail of such an addictive novel as “Husband”, “Quiet One” is just as enjoyable!
Twinsies+ scandalous unpredictable characters + murder + gossip + lies= addicting ride!
This was my first book by Michelle Campbell and I have to say.. it won't be my last. There were many things I enjoyed about this novel. I loved the different POV perspectives in this one.... which is always a huge PLUS in my book :). Michelle does a fantastic job of leaving you wondering who, what, where, and why until the very end!
I do have to say that... unfortunately the ending was a tad predictable in my opinion. I was hoping for a huge twist at the end... but felt that this was a major component that this thriller was missing. Additionally, I felt it was lagging and dragging a tad towards the end.
Despite not having the twist factors, the author does a great job keeping her readers on edge until the end.
Overall, this wasn't my favorite psychological thriller but it was an entertaining read :).
3 quiet stars!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest thoughts.

3.5 stars. A well done thriller at a girls boarding school. Bel and Rose are twins. They are sent off to boarding school by their grandmother. Early on they end up on different sides of "good and bad" associations. Bel is running with the bad girls and Rose is the perfectionist wanting to do everything right and run with the "good" people. What follows is a story of jealousy, rebellion, hazing, get even, girl fights, crush on teacher, and much more. A lot of rivalry between the twins being pulled in different directions.
It's dark in places. I didn't like any of the characters. The story opens with the reader knowing one of the girls has been murdered. But, you don't know which one. I thought that was cool and it got my attention fast. It became a little long and drawn out during the middle and lost my attention for a bit. All in all I found it a good read and would recommend it for those that like thrillers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a digital edition to read and review.
She Was The Quiet One by Michele Campbell turned out to be a fabulous read! Bel and Rose are fraternal twins. When their mother dies, their ultra rich grandma, who they barely even know because their dad died young, gets custody of them and sends them to a boarding school in New England. Odell is one of the best boarding schools in New England. The twins father went to the school when he was younger. Rose is thrilled because she loves academics and school life. Bel is a true rebel and is horrified to have to go to the boarding school. The dorm that they are assigned is called Moreland. In charge of the dorm, is a couple named Sarah and Heath Donovan. They both attended Odell as teenagers. They are both now teachers and Heath has his eyes set on the Headmaster’s job. All the female students are in love with Heath. I don’t want to say too much about the plot because I don’t want to give anything away. When I first started reading this book I thought it seemed like a YA book. I was sorely wrong. This turned into a really interesting thriller and went in directions I did not see coming. I highly recommend this book if you like mysteries or thrillers that you pick this book up and read it. Thank you to the publisher, the author, and Net Galley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
2.5 stars
Rose and Bel have lost their mother and find themselves being shipped off to live with their grandmother. Who in turn sends them off to Odell School, something has been in their Enrigth family for generations. Things go all wrong for this set of twins. A murder has occurred at the school.
It was apparent from the start that these two are different from each other many ways. Rose is more conservative, a rule follower and more academic and maybe a little timid. Bel on the other hand was lively and will do just what she needs to be able to fit in with the girls at the school. Even if it gets her into some trouble. Talk about sibling rivalry, these two have it down to a T! There was a competition going on who would sleep with the new hot dormitory head Heath. Who happens to be there with his wife, but it doesn’t stop any of the girls and their little group of “friends” This whole group of girls are what you’d call the “mean girls” of the school. The tease and haze the other girls something horrible.
The story is told in multiple POV’s and also the transcript of the investigation of the murder as well, giving little clues along the way. Character-wise, there aren’t really any likable characters. They are mean and spiteful, but a whole much of girls all together tends to be, so maybe they weren’t really meant to liked at the much in the first place. But it was kinda hard to for me to feel a connections to them or even care about them. the adult characters were much better. Heath is a teacher, he should know better that to get caught up in anything with the girls drama. And this wife Sarah is oblivious to her husbands “happenings”. The murder mystery is what kept me reading. The who, the why and who was the killer.
This is labeled as a women’s fiction type thriller, but these are the ya vibes with all the drama and events that take place. Like the slipper attack. Hazing pure and simple. There are some scenes that might be a little hard to take, so I just wanted to mention it. This was one of my highly anticipated reads and I have to admit, I was a little let down. The ending was fairly good and the epilogue did save the story as a whole for me. I guess in the end despite my issues with the characters, it did turn out to be an okay psychological thriller.
An intriguing read full of Trieste and turns! I enjoyed it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Maybe I've read too many mystery/thrillers but this one was too predictable. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the story but had the killer figured out halfway through. Bel and Rose Enwright are twin teens whose mother dies of cancer and they go to live with their rich grandmother. Who ships them off to a prestigious boarding school soon as she can. Soon after arriving Bel gets in with the IN crowd while Rose finds her own friends also. Bel gets herself in trouble and gets murdered. Who does it??? Thank you to Netgalley and St. Simons Press for this oppurtunity to read an ARC of this book
Thanks to NetGalley for the ecopy for my Kindle.
This more of a YA book but with a warning about the sexual content and foul language. Didn't like the story line or content.
She Was the Quiet One is jam packed with teenage drama complete with the typical boarding school/spoiled teenagers. It’s not a bad read, but felt like it went on a bit too long and it wasn’t too difficult to see how the plot would pan out from the very beginning. I almost felt like the plot was missing something.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of sibling rivalry, right? Wrong.
She Was the Quiet One introduces you to fraternal orphaned twins - Bel and Rose. The girls, although twins - are two very different people. Rose is the good girl, who gets good grades whereas Bel is the naughty girl who just likes to have fun.
Together, with the aid of their Grandmother, they enroll at Odell an elite private school. When Bel falls in with the “bad crowd,” the plot thickens, the water gets muddy and well - death ensues.
Yet another 5 star twisted tale by the talented Michele Campbell.❤️
I think this book sucked me in since I went to boarding school. The story itself was a little far fetched - random very wealthy grandmother - but it worked. I could identify with both main characters, and thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was not as twisty as other books I’ve read recently, but was a solid thriller/ mystery.
This book tells the story of two orphaned sisters who are sent to an elite boarding school where their loyalty to each other is tested as they choose two very different paths. One sister is happy for the new beginning and dives into her schoolwork. The other is still trying to find her way through her grief and falls in with the wrong crowd. This eventually causes not just a rift but a chasm between the two sisters.
So what will happen when one sister desperately calls for the other’s help? Will she be there for her?
We also get to know a young married couple with two small children who are alumni and now working for the school. One is happy for the opportunity to work there and start anew and the other dreams of more and eventually hatches a plan to run the school. Will ambition overcome loyalty? And just how far will someone go for power?
You’re going to be glued to the pages just as I was!!
I can’t wait to read her other new book “It’s Always the Husband.” Michele Campbell has been a favorite of mine for quite some time! She has a few other novels she wrote as Michele Martinez. These were also fantastic suspense!
This book in particular was provided to me by St. Martin’s Press through Netgalley for my review. It will be published July 31, 2018 but is available for pre-order now. Go ahead and one-click. You won’t regret it!!

Rose and Bel are recently orphaned twins who are forced to leave their Bohemian California life and attend prestigious Odell Boarding School in New England. The sisters very different and each handle their new start in opposite ways. Sarah and Heath Donovan are Odell Alum's returning to run Morehead Dorm in hopes of their own new start and looking to clean up the infamous dorm. When the twins move into Morehead, trouble only begins to increase for Odell and the Donovan's. But when one twin ends up dead, the boarding school runs rampant with rumors and pranks are exposed for more than what they seem.
I found the beginning 1/2 really engaging and fast paced. I was not sure where the story line was headed. It then started to slow down for me and the characters became frustrating. Sarah who started off strong became a weaker version of her earlier self. I really wanted to root for the main characters but after mistake after mistake. and blindly following and believing whatever they were told, I became less engaged and invested in the story. I think if you didn't read a lot of thrillers one would really like it. Overall 3 stars.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the free advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mysterious title and I was intrigued by that. Who was the quiet one? I enjoyed the boarding school drama and was pulled in by all of the secrets. I could see this book being made into a movie. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
