I did not finish reading a Study in Treason because about half-way through, I realized I was not enjoying it. I am of the opinion that are there are too many good books and not enough time to read what you don't like.
Why my low opinion?
There is not a character in A Study in Treason that I like. That I could sympathize with. Joanna is the long lost daughter of Sherlock Holmes and pretty much takes the entire stage. She is methodically thoughtful when solving a crime, which is pretty much the entire make up of the book. She is judgmental, impatient with other crime solvers while she demands patience from them. Her husband is John Watson, Jr. , son of the Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes sidekick. As John attempts to help Joanna solve the case by stating the obvious, Joanna pats him on the head like a puppy, saying 'Good boy, your detective skills are coming right along!' In short, I find Joanna to be annoying.
I am an avid reader of fiction with strong female characters that have something Joanna seems to lack β emotions. This keeps me from appreciating Joanna, and thereby the story.
That being said, anyone who is a fan of Sherlock Holmes fiction can appreciate the story. Joanna's methods echo her father's. The mystery appears to be complex and not all apparent. At half way through the books, the clues were still accumulating and I had know idea who the culprit was. A surprise ending would go a long way to making A Study in Treason a worthwhile read.
Note to the Publisher. At this time, I don't plan to publish my review at other sites because I did not finish the book. If you would like me to publish (with a 3-star rating) feel free to contact me.
A Study in Treason is the second installment in the historical mystery series that follows the daughter of Sherlock Holmes, Joanna. Readers who enjoyed the first installment in this series will appreciate this one as well. A secret treaty between England and France goes missing and Joanna is brought in to help catch the thief. While traditional law enforcement is trying to (unsuccessfully) pull the pieces of the case together, Joanna, along with John Watson and his son, take their own unique approach to the case. Not surprisingly, aspects of this approach echo ways Joanna's father used deductive reasoning to unravel mysteries. Similar to the first book in the series, the author did a wonderful job of telling this story and providing a Sherlock Holmes flavor to it. I felt readers got to know Joanna a little more in this book as a character. She is growing as her own and separating herself from her infamous father's shadow. I look forward to reading more in this series.
History seems to be repeating itself! The long lost daughter of a one off union between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler is on her second marriage, this time to Dr John Watson, son of the original Dr John Watson. In this story the couple, together with Dr Watson Senior, are invited to assist Inspector Lestrade (son of the original Lestrade) solve a mystery of national importance. Even the original tracker dog Toby has a descendent in this book! The story is written in very much the same style as the original Holmes books. Joanna has the same sharp brain and condescending manner as her father, and her husband bumbles along in awe of her talents in much the same way as his father did. Sherlock fans will either love it or hate it. The plot itself is good and reasonably well told, but for me a big letdown was the use of American terms such as sidewalk, block, pants, fender, thrift store and trash can in a story set in 1914 England and narrated by an educated Englishman.
If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan, you want to read this book!
A Study in Treason is the second book in the excellent Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series. In this series, the detective duo is made up of Sherlock and Irene's daughter, Joanna, and Watson's son, John. Set just before WWI, Sherlock has already passed away, but the original Watson is there to advise, along with Lestrade.
I enjoyed the mystery itself in this one, reminiscent of The Hound of the Baskervilles, and set outside of London. It was a lot of fun and kept me guessing through the whole book.
I highly recommend this one! Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
DNF at 6%.
This is totally on me, I didn't really think this through and requested the book from NetGalley without remembering that I loathe Sherlock Holmes and that condescending way in which he explains the most ridiculous observations that lead him to conclude that an elderly Japanese travelling salesman with one leg sat in the chair by the fire. If you like Sherlock Holmes then I'm sure, based on the (very) little I read, that you will love this. The style and vocal patterns appears to be the same. Unfortunately, as I have explained, I don't like the style.
My bad!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Copies of a treaty between Britain and France are being made at the country estate of Lord Halifax. Important because this is 1914. But then the original is stolen, from a seemingly closed room. Having failed to discover the document Scotland Yard bring in Dr Watson and his son Dr John Watson, Jr and his wife Joanna. Joanna who just happens to be the daughter of the now dead Sherlock Holmes.
This is the second in the series and can be read as a standalone story.
An enjoyable and interesting mystery with the likeable characters of the Watsons. a Lestrade is also involved.
I love Sherlockian tales, but with Goldberg's stories, I have to remember to adjust my mindset. He writes very much in the same style at Conan Doyle, which to me is rather jarring and abrupt. In A Study in Treason, I find Joanna to be condescending, especially toward her husband, and it's difficult for me to understand his interest in her. But then I remember that this is his, Watson, Jr.'s, accounting of this tale, and if this is how he perceives Joanna, then that must be how he likes her.
The mystery itself is well-paced, but I feel like the solution was too easily wrapped up using a trope that feels reminiscent of a Sherlock parody. Too simple.
But these are snapshots of their lives, doled out one interesting case at a time, and I still look forward to the next installment. 3.5 stars if I could, so I'll round up to 4.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I have voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this title given to me via NetGalley. A Study in Treason is the second book in The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries. I really enjoyed this installment. It was really well written and it just had you trying to solve the mystery. I look forward to seeing whatβs next from this author.
A Study in Treason by Leonard Goldberg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Who else besides Joanna Blalock, the daughter of Sherlock Holmes, and of course Watson, both father and son could find the answer to this very baffling mystery. Goldberg really knows his Sherlock Holmes as throughout the story incidents keep coming back to his actions. That did add interest but also slowed the story down. Joanna is just as good as her father in finding clues. It was fun watching here in action. Some of the clues was a surprise but I did know about one character before Joanna. A good story for Sherlock Holmes fans.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Holmes is back! Joanna Holmes Watson! What a good detective story, keeps you guessing just like Sherlock! I love that she is married to Dr. Watson's son, however, there needs to be some romance between them! The Author has her thinking about her Dead husband, but not romantically with her present husband?! If that were changed, I would read more of these, if not, it is too dry for me. You can never duplicate Sir Conan Doyle.
I recommend! Thank you!

I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes, in general. I like the character, and I like his world. I am not a purist; I enjoy retellings of Holmes in many forms. So when I say I just could not get into this book, I'm coming from a place of having <i>wanted</i>to love it. Alas. It was not to be.
Why, you ask?
Because I do not like the characters. Though I love the premise - the Holmes and Watson clans have joined by marriage, and Joanna and the Watsons gallivant around solving mysteries together - I find the character of Joanna so unlikable it ruins the entire story for me. She is arrogant - and not in a good way. She operates as if everyone around her is levels less intelligent than she, and even if it's true, it's irritating. And though it's popular for Holmes characters to be written as stoic, Joanna is a block of wood, lacking any personality whatsoever. Additionally, while in the original Holmes adventures John Watson had his own voice and personality, in this book I feel like Watson is only there to make Joanna look good.
So, for me, all in all, a disappointment. Although I will say that cover is gorgeous.
Wow, I absolutely just love this series now!π Well I just read this book which is the second one but I fell in love and it has all the awesome Sherlock Holmes Feels! I was so excited when I received an email alerting me that I was granted a wish from the publishers! St. Martin's Press, you guys rock!πππ
This story captivated my heart because Joanna is just like her father, Sherlock. I also loved the aspect of having Dr. Watson and his son part of the team as well. They make a great team and had me guessing from the very beginning how things would conclude. The characters were fantastic in my opinion and I can't wait to read the first in the series now! The mystery was solid and I thought I could use my skills for this book after figuring out Ruth Ware's latest novel from the beginning chapters but I have to admit that the ending surprised me and there was quite the twists that I won't soon forget. I read this novel within a day and was scrolling through pages as fast as I possibly could. I definitely recommend this book to Sherlock fans and mystery lovers alike!
I hope this series has a long run. This, the second of the series, is as good as the previous mystery. The daughter of Sherlock Holmes is married to the son of Dr. Watson and she is very much her father's daughter. She, her husband and Dr. Watson Sr. are now investigating the disappearance of a treaty that was stolen while in the custody of the man who was making a copy. It's recovery is of national importance and, of course, only the best are called to get it back.
Some purists say there is only one Holmes and one Watson but I say more like this is fine with me, I'm always eager to honor them with continued stories. This can be read as a stand alone without any loss of details. So brew yourself a cuppa, settle down in your favorite comfy chair and enter the world of Sherlock's daughter, Joanna. You'll be glad you did.
The second novel was a great edition to the series! It was thrilling and the mystery had me reading until the end. I loved how the author wrote the world of Sherlock Holmes, not remaking it but just adding onto the already great universe.
A Study in Treason is another wonderful book in the Daughter of Sherlock Holmes series. Watson Jr and Joanna Blacklock are now married and helping the ailing Watson get his strength back after a minor stroke when a British officer comes to him with a case of national importance. A treaty has been stolen and needs to be recovered. The daughter of Sherlock Holmes and the son of Dr. Watson are a great team and I continue to enjoy the classic Sherlock Holmes type story but with a female lead. She is continuously underestimated but has all of the deduction skills her father had. This series is a wonderful way to put a spin on a classic and I hope there are more. I think this one could be read as a stand-alone though the case in the first book was mentioned a couple of times and the connections between the characters and their histories are more thoroughly explained in The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes. Thank you to Minotaur Books for access to the galley in Netgalley, this book is published on June 12, 2018.
A Study in Treason is a worthy followup to The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes. The mystery pulls you along and the characters are as engaging as ever . I'm excited to see where this series goes. If you enjoyed the first one I definitely recommend you pick this one up.
Thanks St. Martin's Press and netgalley for this ARC.
Goldberg's second book in this series is even more amazing than the first if possible. You will be mesmerized, lasered in on the story, and sorry when it ends.
The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes was a wonderful introduction to the second generation Holmes and Watson. Joanna Blalock is the offspring of the affair between Sherlock and Irene Adler. She has her mother's looks and her father's mind. Watson asks her to consult on the first case and introduces her to his son, a pathologist.
In the second book of the series, Joanna and Watson Jr. are now married. Dr. Watson is asked to assist the crown on a most important case for national security. Watson insists his son and Joanna are allowed to assist.
The cases are written like the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
This is a highly recommended series for classic mystery lovers.
The daughter of Sherlock Holmes, her husband and son of Dr. Watson Sr. and Dr. Watson Sr. embark on saving the realm when a critical document is stolen. This document is the peace treaty between England and France and must be retrieved before its disappearance is discovered.
Complex sleuthing, fascinating and likable characters and strong historical world building makes A Study in Treason a delightfully stimulating read.
I received this ARC copy of A Study In Treason from St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books. This is my honest and voluntary review. A Study in Treason is set for publication June 12, 2018.

The second book in this series featuring Sherlock Holmes daughter, her husband Dr. Watson's son and the now elderly Dr. Watson. On the eve of World War I some important documents have gone missing and its up to the trio to save the day. The mystery is well done until the end when the culprit is discovered with the most conventional of answers. Still a fun read and I look forward to the next book in the series.
