I have read all of the DI Callanach series by Helen Fields and they just keep getting better.
Already looking forward to the next in the series.
Read Helen Field's first publication some time ago and enjoyed it.
Some how reading subsequent ones slipped under the radar.
Really grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this one, her fourth.
Excellent story and enjoyed it so much, will now be going back to read numbers two & three as well.
I would like to thank Avon Books UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Perfect Silence’ written by Helen Fields, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The body of Zoey Cole is discovered dumped by the side of the road. The shape of a doll has been savagely cut from her stomach and her back and the skin removed to make a ‘doll’ with a religious text placed inside. The ‘doll’ is found inside a pram next to a baby whose mother has been abducted by the same man and DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach from the Major Investigation Team in Edinburgh realise that with so few clues it’s only a matter of time before the body of the killer’s next victim is found.
‘Perfect Silence’ is a thoroughly enjoyable novel with a spine-chilling and intricately woven plot which is both convincing and exciting. There are twists and turns, enough credible suspects to keep me guessing, lots of action, and a nail-biting and gruesome conclusion, in fact everything I want from a crime thriller. This is the first of Helen Fields’ novels I’ve had the chance to read and it definitely won’t be the last.
Wow. I feel I am a little late to the party with this series, but I will be going back to the start ASAP. I just loved this. I know police procedurals are 'my thing' but this had everything - nasty serial killer on the loose, a super cast of characters, second case running in the background, realism and contemporary commentary. More please, hopefully soon.
The disturb factor in these books don't decline over time. Helen's writing is fantastic, the depth of gore is fantastic and I loved every bit of it.
A good edge of your seat gripper and a thoroughly exciting page turner, well written which kept me gripped throughout.
Can definitely recommend.
Excellent story line which was gripping from start to finish. Great characters. I would highly recommend this book.
Perfect Silence
by Helen Fields FOUR STARS!!! Thank you to the publisher and author for an e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
A twisted psychological thriller set in Edinburgh.. Rich characters who were all interesting. Story moved along at pace and kept me intrigued until the end.
First of all thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the chance to read this book. This is my very first Helen Fields book but it will certainly not be my last. I love the character of DCI Ava Turner who fights for the victims and will go to any lengths to bring their murderers to justice. This is a gritty , fast paced novel set in Edinburgh. The descriptions make you feel as if you are right there witnessing everything first hand. It doesn't let up at all and was a totally enjoyable read. Brilliant.
Helen Fields continues to astound me. Her 'Perfect' series, is for me, just that - perfect! I am never able to work out who is to blame or how the dream due Ava and Luc will solve the case. Consequently I am hooked from first page till last. Helen Fields is very quickly becoming my go-to for crime fiction.
This is the 4th book in the DI Luc Callanch series by author Helen Fields. I have only previously read one other book in this series and did not feel this detracted from my enjoyment or understanding in anyway.
When the body of a young girl is found dumped on the roadside on the outskirts of Edinburgh a terrifying discovery is made by the pathologists when they examine the her remains. The outline of a doll carved into the victim’s skin.
The team of DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach struggle to find leads until they discover a doll made of skin beside an abandoned baby. A further young woman is found brutally murdered and the detectives that the killer is playing with them and likely to kill again.
Excellent characters and yet another series for me to read.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Avon Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
One of the best crime thrillers I have read for quite a while. Two interesting story lines a serial killer with an unusual MO. The other seemingly pointless series of attack’s on drug addicts. A French detective with a apparently Scottish surname. Look forward to catching up with DI Callanach and Helen Fields in future novels.
Helen Fields' Luv and Ava detective duo are top of my must read list these days and this installment doesn't disappoint. A really dark quite sinister set of crimes with a backdrop of plenty of twists for one of my favourite crime fighting teams. Thanks goodness Helen seems to write fast as I can't wait for the next installment. My goodness I had to wipe my brain clean of a certain Sergeant Lively exploit though yuck ;)
No 4 in the DI Callanagh series and what a tale it is! A grisly tale indeed. A girl,is found on a country lane, she has suffered terribly at the hands of her killer.
Skin in the shape of a rag doll has been removed from both her stomach and back.
When a former drug user disappears and her abandoned baby is found alone in her pram with the doll made from the victims skin Luc and Ava realise the mother of the baby has been abducted and is likely a prisoner of a serial killer.
As if that isn`t enough to stretch the team, homeless drug users are being found with Z slashed into their faces.
In a race against time we follow Luc and Ava as they gather clues to solve the two cases.
The graphic descriptions of the crimes kept me enthralled I just couldnt put this down, great characters a terrific read all round.
Thanks to Avon books and Netgalley for the chance to read this as an ARC an easy 5* from me.
I love this series. It is dark as you like, highly compelling with truly scary mystery elements and an excellent core cast who engage you further with every new novel.
In Perfect Silence our team are once more on the hunt for a killer. What I really enjoy about these are the emotional levels that the author gets in there – you really feel for the victims you pray for a good ending for them and you are with the investigative team every step of the way.
Luc is definitely a clever and complex character, his relationships with those around him form the heart of these. Overall a genuine page turner once again and honestly very very creepy! Sleep with the lights on….
Highly Recommended.
Perfect Silence Helen Fields
Every now and again a book come along and stops me in my tracks. Perfect Silence is one of only a handful to have done this in 40 odd years of reading psychological thrillers.
The book starts with a woman crawling along a country lane. Badly injured having been viciously abused by her kidnapper, who has left her to die slowly, and alone, with no chance of anybody finding her in time to save her.
When she is found the Edinburgh Major Investigation Team is tasked with finding the killer.
DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach make a great team. She is young and ambitious but a great officer, he is the French transferee from Interpol who has adopted Scotland as his homeland, even if it is somewhat reluctantly.
Together with their team they start the investigation into the murder of the woman but quickly realise that another woman has been taken. From then on it becomes a race against time as the kidnapper kills the women before taking the next victim. Every time they take a new victim they leave behind their uniquely grotesque calling card.
But how many women will go missing and be killed before Ava and her team catch the person responsible.
If that’s not bad enough somebody is attacking the drug fuelled vagrants across the City, and Ava is desperately trying to protect them as well as catch their attackers. This investigation leads her into a conflict it doesn’t look like she can win.
Will this distract her and her team from finding the killer of the women.
This book had me hooked from page one. By the end of the book I was breathless.
Helen Fields has a way of writing that keeps the reader turning the page. A lot of authors can do that. But she can do something not very many can. There are chapters in this book where the very last sentence made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up in horror. Not the grislily sort of horror, the psychological sort. Wow
Last year I was lucky enough to read Perfect Remains by Helen Fields, but because it was part of a judging system for a literature prize, I wasn’t able to review it on my blog. It was one of the best books I’ve read.
Well I can shout from the roof tops about this one. It’s the best book I’ve read this year, and right up there in the list of the best books I’ve ever read.

A return to form! Fourth instalment in the Turner-Callanach series (I’m not sure why Ava doesn’t get a name check, so I’ll do it here!)
You can only call them a serial killer after the third murder... This book sees Ava & Luc returning to what we love - solving murders & finding psychopaths.
There’s a major story going on here, when the mutilated body of a young woman is found, but there’s also a minor story line (in all senses) of viscous attacks on two homeless men.
It’s twisty & clever enough to make you want to whizz through it. And then annoyed when you remember there isn’t another one in the series yet!
The dialogue makes me cringe slightly at times, when everything is being spelled out between characters for our benefit, but the characters are likeable or interesting enough to always forgive that. The usual suspects are back - Evil Overlord being my personal fave!
Like the other books, this one benefits from lots of loose threads that continue on between books. I was glad to read the ongoing will they/won’t they between Ava & Luc!
Edinburgh is slowly becoming the serial killer Scottish equivalent of Midsomer, but I’ll be reading #5 as soon as it’s out! (I just hope the author doesn’t do a rush job like #3!)
What a superb series! I have been reading the Luc Callanach/Ava Turner books from the beginning and they just get better and better. Really good characters, very believable with great chemistry. Rather gruesom, scary murders but so addictive to read. Helen Fields is up there with the best crime authors. I look forward to reading the next one - hope it won't be too long!
I would like to thank Avon and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.
I was immediately hooked l realised this was a follow on book but a story I never it’s own right. Lots of interesting characters some very likeable and l found the author very descriptive. A great who dun it quite graphic so be warned!
