"Manners Matter," a children's version of the "The Temple Talks Series" was written and created by Temple Grandin and Veronica Zysk. The first part of the book holds valuable information written by Grandin herself. The first part also has illustrated animated pictures including drawings on a much younger version of an adult Temple Grandin and Temple as a little girl learning how she used manners. During this section, Grandin shares examples of manners and social skills and why they are important. The second part of the book is written by Zysk and has more practical steps that adults can master.
While this book offers great examples and not only for autistics, there are a few the introduction information about Dr. Grandin is off.
Number 1. She was not raised on Colorado but in Boston, MA and fell in love with the West at 14.
Number 2. Yes, she went to public school but again only until she was 14 prior to be sent of to a boarding school
Otherwise great book and filled with humor and practical steps
This book is geared towards children with autism and is probably good for that purpose. I personally found it a little dry and boring for me and my kids.
Not only is this an autism friendly book that will help many students in my classroom, i personally thing any adult could do with learning these things about manners.
As i work in a secondary school as a lead practitioner of Autism i was intruiged to read this book for children. It was written in a social story format and i found it easy to follow and i think that my pupils would too! I think that a social story around manners especially social manners is definitely needed as it is one of those grey areas that most children struggle with whether they are on the spectrum or not.
What a great book! I love that Temple Grandin wrote the intro. She really explained well the importance of manners. Where was this book when I was raising my own daughter??? And we all share blame for dropping the ball since the 70's. In our mad rush, manners seem to have fallen to the wayside, sadly. This book is a wonderful reminder to EVERYBODY how useful good manners are. Not just for kids, adults should take a good peek at this book, too. You, too, teens!
This book has two parts. The first part is written to children and specifically a child struggling socially because of autism. It is easy to read in small chunks and has bright colored pictures to help illustrate concepts being discussed. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see more pictures illustrating the concepts and providing examples.
The second part of the book is geared toward parents and adults working with the children. Provided were practical tips and suggestions that could be applied immediately to help model, teach and reinforce good manners. It also emphasized the fact that this was something to be practiced and that perfection should not be expected immediately. I also liked the overall tone of the book. It was sympathetic to autism but also did not allow for it to be an excuse for bad manners and sought to help the child become more sociably acceptable and comfortable in their environment with their peers by providing them tools to succeed in those social situations.
I was provided a copy of this book by my friends at netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Manners Matter! is a wonderful resource for elementary aged students with ASD. The illustrations were fantastic and full of diversity. I enjoyed the social story style of the text. It included examples of manners, consequences, and rationale for all. The parents tips were clear, concise, and valuable. I can't wait to buy a finished copy to share with my Autism specialists.
