I love this book. How to live with oast scars and changing future. The intensity made me cry . Just wow.
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review.
A familiar storyline - city girl finds herself in the countryside on a farm and meets damaged former military man. They appear to instantly dislike each other, butting heads often. But there is obviously a deep attraction and strong chemistry between them. Their relationship which develops, is full of passion and emotion. The characters are so real and well developed.
I enjoyed reading this charming romance. It made me smile.

Jennifer Probst has another hit with The Start of Something Good. This book has an alpha male former military hero who is sexy hot but also very human as he works to heal from physical wounds and PTSD. The author has the gift of getting me to feel the emotions of the characters. The setting is a gorgeous horse farm and the description details make me felt like was there. The female lead Mia is funny, intelligent, very human, and again I can feel and share her insecurities. This story has it all with romance, sex, pain, sorrow, good times and bad, with lots of human emotions and insights. This is a book I did not want to put down and I would highly recommend it. I am looking forward to reading the stories Jennifer writes about the other characters introduced in this book!
I surprised myself by loving this book. I have never been a fan of the “city girl goes to the country” plot line. I’m even less fond of the “charming inn, county fair, baked goods” scenarios. They have been written to death and often should be accompanied by a healthy dose of insulin. But this author managed to take all those things and make them fresh and interesting.
The story worked for me primarily because of the development of the protagonists, Mia and Ethan. The dialogue was believable and tart. Neither character was a stereotype, both being drawn in a more nuanced way than one would expect in a book with this plot line. The steamy scenes made sense and didn’t seem to have been sprinkled throughout as filler as often happens. In addition to dealing with the issues in their relationship, Mia and Ethan have to navigate a relationship with Chloe, Mia's teenaged charge for the summer. This facet was surprisingly well done and believable also.
My only minor objection was the stereotypical portrayal of the elderly guests at the inn as sort of creepily randy and rowdy. While I understand it was included for the humorous element, and parts were funny, in this day how many elderly people have false teeth in a jar in public? But that’s a small thing.
This was a lovely, interesting book that I thoroughly enjoyed despite my initial misgivings.
Mia, who owns an up and coming PR firm in New York, is sent to keep her biggest client's wayward daughter out of trouble while doing court ordered community service at an upstate horse farm and bed & breakfast. Mia is a business woman and a city girl through and through and is not at all happy about the task ahead of her. She is headstrong, brash, dressed to the nines and no nonsense. Country life has zero appeal to her. She dislikes animals, hates the slow pace of life, despises small talk and friendly town people and she most definitely detests Ethan Bishop who is in charge of the family horse farm. They butt heads at every turn even though there is an undeniable attraction between them. When Chloe, the client's daughter continues down the wrong path, Mia must figure out a way to put her on the straight and narrow and save her client's chances to win the New York mayoral race. Can Mia change Chloe's criminal behavior, save Chloe and her father's relationship and learn what is really important in life at the same time? When her task is completed. Will Mia still think her PR business is the most important thing in her life or will her goals change? This is a well written book full of funny encounters and sexual angst. I enjoyed the read and recommend it.
I really enjoyed this story! It is definitely aptly titled because it is the start of something good, another great series by Jennifer Probst!
This is a beautifully written story about two people, Mia and Ethan, who seem to be just about as opposite as they can be but who really are perfect for each other. Both Ethan and Mia are such well developed and wonderful characters that you can’t help but fall in love with them falling in love. But it’s a story about so much more than just this couple. It’s a beautiful story about family, love and healing on a deeper level and how sometimes all it takes is special people in your life to make things feel right. So much goodness in this story! So much to love! Looking forward to the next one!
Great book, I love the character development, they were easy to relate to. The story itself had an easy flow to it with the right emotional impact
This book was super cute and I devoured it in two sittings. I really loved the characters, the farm, and the positive body message sent. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out!!
I’ve read several of Ms. Probst’s books and enjoyed them so was excited to see this new series.
Mia, who is building up her PR and marketing firm in Manhattan, loves the energy of the city. She is used to wearing expensive clothes to meet with her clients and attend events and is an unrepentant city girl. She lands an account with a candidate for the mayor of New York City, which ends up changing her life. She ends up having to put her work somewhat on hold while she moves to the country temporarily to help the candidate’s college-age daughter.
When she travels to the Hudson Valley to a B&B, she meets Ethan, and they immediately clash. He think she’s a snooty city girl, wearing expensive clothes, while they are on a farm. The more time that Ethan and Mia spend together, they tend to set off explosions with their aggravation with each other. They usually both stalk away from each other but Ethan starts to enjoy Mia’s temper and comments.
At first, Mia is seen as quite work-driven and not comfortable around other B&B guests nor the animals. I think this worked well to show the great contrast in her life and the country. As Mia starts to relax with the beauty of the farm and countryside, the relationship with Ethan changes. Mia is wary of the animals but it’s quite hilarious how a chicken named Hei Hei won’t leave her alone.
Ethan’s sisters Ophelia and Harper handle the house and the horse rescue part of the farm. When Ethan returns after a disastrous Special Forces assignment, he is broken in body and spirit. It was quite painful to read about Ethan’s injuries and his PTSD. The descriptions of his attacks with his inability to breathe, hearing issues, reliving the event, were so real, I found myself not breathing. Mia has her own painful past which has influenced her work and life.
There are numerous events in the story that are entertaining, sad, and hopeful. As Mia and Ethan fall in love, they both wonder how a relationship can work when Ethan needs the peacefulness of the farm and Mia has her growing business in the city, several hours away. It was heartbreaking to see how they both struggled to determine the best course for each other.
At times the story moved slowly but there was great character development and dialogue. The side characters added a fun element to the story. Mia wasn’t confident that she could interact well with a teen but it was intriguing to watch Chloe and Mia build a relationship. Chloe came across as a normal, rebellious teen and yet had such a soft side working with the horses.
I live in Memphis, TN so was happy to see that St. Jude Children’s Hospital was mentioned.
Thanks to the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing the opportunity to read this early copy.
The Start of Something Good, is a new book and a new series by the one and only Jennifer Probst!
I wasn't sure when I started this one, I haven't read this authors work in a long time. but I was surprised that I really enjoyed it. An enemies to lovers story. A wounded solider *sigh* and uptight PR shark...
I found this was a decent read, I didn't love or hate it, I think my tastes over the years have changed, every Probst fan is going to love this one!
The start of something good was provided to me via Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Mia is a uptight, high maintenance New Yorker who finds herself at a B & B on a horse farm for the summer.
Ethan is a ex Special Forces/body guard to the Hollywood A listers until tragedy strikes.
When Mia and Ethan collide it’s hilarious and sweet and sexy.
You will fall in love with Ethan and Mia, but the really star of this book is Hei Hei.
This series starter lays the foundation of healing, forgiveness and second chances. The family history and love of the Bishop family are intriguing and each of the adult siblings are fascinating. Ethan returns a little bitter hearted after a failed operation in Special Ops. Recovering from a painful injury, Ethan's heart is what needs mending the most. The obvious love of these siblings and the foundation their mother laid makes for a promise of even more great stories to come.
Mia is a PR guru and her latest client has put her in charge of his mischevious 19 year old. While this is a romance and Mia and Ethan were great together despite their obvious differences, Chloe sticks out to me the most as a troubled girl begging for attention and captures everyone's affection except from th one she wants it from the most-her dad.
Mia is a complete city girl and totally out of her element at the Bishop horse farm. Ethan is immediately put off by her too dressed to impress persona and wants her no where near his barn or animals. The play back and forth between Mia and Ethan is tensious and funny. I enjoyed their story and came to cheer for them as a couple.
This story is more complex than a romance book. Jennifer Probst gives the reader the emotion of a family's heartbreak and the healing that can eventually be reached; the importance of family and the importance that bond is to maintain; and finding love after tragedy.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I was excited to see another series by Jennifer Probst! I love her novels and this was didn't disappoint! This is a classic chick lit/romance novel.
I loved Ethan and his sisters and the descriptions of the farm and B&B. Mia takes a little to grow on you, but once she starts to embrace life out of NYC she is much more likable.
I can't wait to read her next ones about the sisters!
Once I read the first sentence I knew that this was indeed the start of something good. With sentences like this I was hooked "His soul took a breath and sighed once again full because of her" This is a wonderfully written sentence. I was blown away by the writing, it was rich, descriptive, evoked images that seemed so clear, had great character development, love, redemption, sex, loss. No one is forgotten in this book, all of the characters added something, sometimes funny ( like the senior couples!!!! aka as the Golden Girl Gone wild clubs). The story had a beautiful flow and it had well deserved HEA.
An amazing opposites attract read. If you love city meets country reads that have strong male and female then this is one for you. Ethan returns home to his sisters finish his healing process. He is a little gruff at first but he sure does grow on you. Mia she may have been sent to the Bishops B&B for work but she found more then she bargained for. Then again wait until you meet Heihei and fellow guests. He just adds the extra cute in this read. Mia and Ethan start out in a hate relationship but boy do sparks fly. I love how Ethan takes Chloe under his wings and helps her grow. This B&B has some type of magic that draws you in. I love this start to this series and I really can't wait for more.

I was absolutely pumped when I was approved to review a copy of The Start of Something Good because I have read previous works by Ms. Probst and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Well what a treat I was in for.
Mia owns her own PR firm in New York and with a lot of blood, sweat and tears is on the fast track to making it big if she can land her client in the hot seat as Mayor of New York. Her client, Jonathan has had some disturbing news about his daughter Chloe and has told Mia he wants her to spend the summer with her in Upstate New York at a B & B/Horse Rescue farm because she is the only one he trust.
"Every soul- both animal and human- deserve a worthy life."
Ethan is back home after serving as a Special Forces paratrooper. He needs time to not only heal is body but also his mind and spirit. He may have wanted to escape the farm as young man but right now the familiar is exactly what he needs.
After a wrong turn Mia stops to ask for directions and is not at all impressed with the grizzly of a man who informs her she took a wrong turn. Throw in a crazy chicken and she can't get out of there fast enough. Well at least she won't be seeing him again..........
Oh these two were just so easy to fall in love with. This was just a real good, feel good enemies to lover story that just made me feel all gooey inside. I loved that with it being based on a farm there were lots of animals involved in the storyline and really added a lot of extra character to the overall story.
I absolutely loved everything about this book!!!!
There is a hint at the end of the book to let us know who the next book will be about and I just cannot wait. I will be eagerly awaiting all the books I this series.
This is the first book that I have read by Jennifer Probst. It had a very good story line and characters that you could connect with. The plot made it a very emotional book. I really enjoyed it
My biggest problem with this author's books is that the females are not written strongly and I don't generally like them within the first chapters. That makes it very difficult to even want to finish a book. The story is a good one, it's just that you have to put a lot of faith and time into the characters and plot before it pays off. I do wish the editing was a little tighter and worked on making characters really grab you from the start, but it was a decent book.
This is not my usual genre, and yet I never turn down a book by Jennifer Probst. This wasn't my favorite book her, but it's a solid first book for new series and definitely intrigued me about what's to come for the other siblings.
This book was so good! I'm from the Hudson Valley as well so reading about places I've been, or heard about!
Follow the story of Ethan & Mia, who are thrown together for a summer, he lives there, she's basically babysitting her client's daughter Chloe, who's sent to work on this farm as part of her community service for trouble she's gotten herself into! Ethan and Mia start off on the wrong foot, but their relationship progresses on as they gain an understanding of the others life! Throw in a happy old dog and a chicken that crosses boundries with Mia and you have a great story!!
Absolutely loved this story, can't wait for more in the series! 5 stars, grab this when it comes out!
