Oh! This was such a lovely read.
Perfect for the weekend, a quick and breezy romance. The romance, the animals, the elders - all the characters were such fun.
The animals - Wheezy and Hei Hei - were the best. And the food. I think that the food in this book is worth a mention. They could have included recipes like a few books have done.
I wouldn't classify this book as just a romance, it was a very nice book - with family & relationships, friends & pets. Everything just felt rather wholesome.
Good read! definitely recommend.
ARC received for an honest review
Start of Something Good was all sorts of adorableness. Right from the start I was hooked, and didn't want to put it down until I had finished.
Ethan and Mia's story was just what this girl wanted this past weekend. The country, sex-crazed grandmas that had me laughing out loud, cookies - oh, the cookies had my searching my cupboards for goodies to eat!
I adored the progression of Ethan and Mia's relationship from hating each other to somewhat more. And I also adore their relationships with Mia's charge for the summer, Chloe.
However the scene stealer in this story is definitely a little bit cocky. No, what, he is a big cocky. This rooster had me in stitches!
This made me want to hit the farm - though not near horses, those things are the beasts of Satan! I live in the country and loved the vibe this story gives the reader.
I can't wait to see where this story goes, and can't wait for the sister's stories.
Wonderfully written story
I have been a fan of Jennifer Probst series for many years and and The Start of Something Good, the first in the Stay series has proven to me that I've got a lot of good reads to look forward to.
Mia and Ethan were great characters. I loved how both of them grew and changed and their relationship evolved. I also thought the secondary characters added such wonderful dimensions to the story. I especially enjoyed Chloe's subplot. It looks like Ethan's sister Ophelia gets the next story. I can hardly wait.
I received an advance reader copy.
I hadn't read a Jennifer Probst book in some time before picking this one up. This was the perfect book to remind me why I love her writing so much. It has all the things that make her writing great - a wonderful story that just leaves you feeling good, strong passionate characters with fiery chemistry, and a powerful romance that fills your heart with love and hope. Add in the small town feels this one has and a nice touch of humor, viola! One amazing book that will give you hours of entertainment. As a bonus this is just the start of what should be a great series. Ethan and Mia have set the bar pretty high but I'm sure Ms. Probst has more great stories and characters to come in this series. I highly recommend this book.
Jennifer Probst is one of those authors that just gets it. Her stories hit the mark each and every time. Every detail is covered and well thought out. Always a go to author for me and The Start of Something Good was no different.
Enemies to lovers at their best, Mia and Ethan start with a bang. The tempers flare high and their magnetism just can’t be ignored. They both carry heavy wounds, yet once the anger subsides and they both find that together anything is possible. For me, everything about this story was perfect. The hero and heroine, each and every secondary character, the story, the pace, the emotions, the sex (when you get to the barn scene you love the sex too), all combine to create that five star read Probst is known for. This new series has me all kinds of excited. Probst even set up book two in such a way, that I am so ready for more.
I have to admit when I started this book I found Mia completely unrelateable. Her desire to lose 10 lbs was driving me crazy. I know most women struggle with their weight but from the first time she barely eats I wanted to jump into the book and feed her. Without posting a spoiler I am not the only one that feels that way (a character voices exactly how I felt).
While I have never been to upstate New York I like reading about it in books. It sounds beautiful. I can see why it's become a popular setting for books. I like it allows people to use NYC as a setting and then the rest takes place upstate in a more small town setting.
My favorite scene involves some characters browsing through a library book sale. I liked when they discussed their book selections and totally judged each other.
I did grow to like Mia and loved most of the other characters. I can't wait to see who book 2 is about. I have guess since I think there's a set up for it in book 1 but sometimes author surprise you with the series order.
I’ve read a few of Jennifer Probst books, love the thought process she puts into her stories, and I always walk away from them with a tissue in my hand and loving each book a little more than the last. But, having said that, this is by far my favorite book of of hers! Where do I start. Ethan is a wounded warrior with the special forces after an assignment gone wrong, he’s realized that he needs to get back to his roots, and the small town where his two sisters live taking care of the Inn and horse rescue farm their mother started before she passed away from cancer. Mia is the owner of a PR firm in Manhattan that is tasked with babysitting her number one political clients daughter (Chloe) who has found herself in some trouble and is sentenced to do community service work on Ethan and his sisters farm. Chloe has also lost her mother to cancer, and although her father loves her, he’s busy with his campaign to become Mayor, so he tasks Mia to keep an eye on her throughout the summer while Chloe completes her community service. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Ethan and Mia, their banter, sassiness, humor, loved Mia’s obsession with the fear with carbs and sweets, and eventual hot, steamy, off the charts connection they end up having. Hei Hei was absolutely hysterical. Wheezy adorable, and Harper and Ophelia were the perfect match as Ethan’s sisters. Loved the perfect ending, and can’t wait for the next installment in this series. Very well written, difficult to put down, and definitely an emotional rollercoaster, Jennifer Probst really outdid herself on this one, incredible read!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book.
Ethan just came back home to his family's Bed & Breakfast slash horse farm. He's been hurt on his last job in the military and he needs a bit time to heal - body and mind.
His sisters have been running the business perfectly. But now he's here and they immediately give him the task of becoming the mentor of 19 year old Chloe who was sent to the farm by a judge for doing stupid stuff at college.
Enter Mia. She's gonna be Chloe's 'guardian' for the summer. Mia works as Chloe's dad's PR person. Jonathan is running for Mayor of New York City and they need to keep whatever Chloe did upstate hidden from the press, that's why Mia is sent to keep her in line.
Mia HATES everything country. She's a city girl from head to toe. And her first meeting with Ethan is not really a good one. But they have to see each other all the time the whole summer long... And there are definitely some sparks flying around - even though both can't stand what the other stands for. Rich city girl vs. country horse man. Let the fun times begin! ☺
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MIA & ETHAN???
WILL THERE BE A HAPPILY EVER AFTER???
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT ☺

Awww that was adorable!
I just love those kinds of books.
So I'll keep this short ....
A beautiful, homey family-run B&B with cookies and iced tea on the porch for guests and a horse farm and a small town with great people. And all those different kinds of problems of the past that both Mia and Ethan and even Chloe and Ethan's sisters bring into the story.
It was the perfect romance!
Sweet, adorable, moving, sparky, sexy, exciting, country-ish.
I just adored it all. Especially the animals!! Hei Hei is the best!!!!! ☺ LOL!
This was a really great romance! I can't wait to see what Ethan's sisters will have to tell us. We already know who Ophelia's guy will be!
THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD was a mega-adorable romance! I just adored everything about it! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Ethan - this one is mine!
Witty banter with sarcasm and lots of heart. "Every soul deserves a chance - both animal and human."
Ethan, a military man and bodyguard returns to his small town home -rescue horse ranch injured wanting solitude and solace.
Mia runs a busy, professional NYC PR firm.
Chloe, a college student is to serve community service on a rescue horse ranch
Needing to keep things quiet for a political candidate Chloe is placed under the protective eye of Mia. When these 3 different worlds intersect there is a battle of wills but with that comes understanding, chance and change.
A feel good read. This is why I love reading Jennifer Probst's books.
I have voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this title given to me via NetGalley. The Start of Something Good is the first book in the Stay series and I loved getting to meet Ethan Bishop and Mia Thrush. This book was just so easy to get lost in and I felt so much for these characters. I had so much fun learning more about each character and all they had gone through. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this author.
3.75 Stars
Just like the title, “The Start of Something Good” is a good start to Jennifer Probst’s new series “Stay.” It had the ups and downs moments, but overall the whole casts really charmed me with the self-revelation and their witty back and forth, humans and animals like.
Mia especially was a formidable character who raised above her family’s misfortune and seized life on her own term. I enjoyed her character developing into an upgrade and mature version Mia without losing her core values. Her flourishing friendship with a giant Polish chicken was especially hilarious to read! This was a heroine who knew what she want and go for it! What’s not to love?
Personally, Ethan was (to me, at least) was a touch mushy for an ex Special Force. I got that the guilt and gotten shot combined resulted in his PTSD among his issue, but I just felt a certain lack of quality that he compensated by being judgmental A-hole. Sure, the war of wordplay between Mia and him was among the chief amusement of the story. But it took a while for me to warm up to him.
More than the hostility turned into lust for the duo (and it’s not only physical but also intellectual attraction!) what drew me was the story of the side characters, some of whom I suspect would have their own book in due time, but especially their friendship with a young lost. Mia, Chloe, and Ethan blossoming friendship was to me the highlight of this entry, made livelier by a pair of Labradors, a crazed chicken named Hei Hei, and ever expanding number of horses.
What made “The Start of Something Good” special for me was the development of Mia and Ethan’s relationship. I confessed that I started to get bored when they regularly do the tango with quite explicit scene. It was the gradual step from accepting their long distance relationship to actually self-contemplating to reach their (grown up) decision that got to me. It didn’t glorify sacrificing one’s life for others but really really making the best of everything they got.. that felt very real and relatable to me. For sure I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series, which seem would delve into a couple of Ethan’s nearest and dearest’s past. I can’t wait!
Advanced copy of this book is kindly given by the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book from the publisher for a review through Netgalley. Ethan, injured on the job returns to his hometown to reevaluate and recover. Mia, who runs her own PR company, needs to "babysit" the daughter of one of her clients so his chances at winning an important election are not ruined. Sparks fly between Ethan and Mia as opposites initially repel, but end up attracting in the end. I thought that this was a cute, sweet opposites attract romance. Initially I didn't think I would like the character of Mia, she came off of shallow, but as the novel continued on she grew on me. I enjoyed all of the secondary characters, especially the animal characters, and am looking forward to getting to hopefully read future books in the series about Ethan's sisters. This author did a great job building these characters and their lives, the environment and the people that surround them and is able to make the reader care about them all.
A wonderful beginning to a new series by this talented author.
The story centers around Ethan Bishop, and Mia Thrush. Ethan is a former Special Forces and bodyguard, that has suffered devastating injuries not only physically and psychologically. He has returned home to the family ranch and B & B to recover and has become sort of a hermit.
MIa is a PR agent , working to get her client elected to be the NYC major. She goes to the B & B for the summer with her client’s troubled daughter. Little do Mia and Chloe realize that their lives will be changed.
Ethan and Mia have instant chemistry but one is a country boy suffering from panic attacks, and the other one is a career city gal.
This is a touching story that is at times heartbreaking but also heartwarming. A story about how goals can change when you find “the one” if you are willing to take the chance. But it also a story about a family’s love and support.
Can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I was entrusted this copy by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
One of the reasons I love reading Jennifer Probst books is because she writes in such a familiar way that you just feel like you’re part of the story.
This story is so refreshing and she writes in such a way to allow us to yearn for a small town closeness and not the anonymity of the big city. A place where you know your neighbors and the local merchants. Where they become a part of your lives.
This book is the start of a brand new series and it is loaded with her trademark warm feelings, humor, anticipation, and sweet love that we all crave. It’s a clash of two opposites that completely combust when they come together. A steamy love-hate relationship that just has to be.
With her amazing ability to create a story that tugs your heartstrings, she brings you sweet hot romance with characters that you truly enjoy. Getting to know Ethan and Mia is not only delightful but memorable too. I shed many a tear in this amazing story! The Start of Something Good leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling that just makes you sigh.
I can’t wait to read more in this brand new Stay series. It’s like coming home.
Sometimes family isn’t made up of blood and sometimes home isn’t a place, but a person. And sometimes hopes turn into dreams one never dared to dream when a soul finds its other half. Mia is a big city gal with big city ambitions to build her PR firm and right an old wrong she holds close to her heart. Ethan is a combat vet with far more scars than just the physical, but his family’s ranch in the mountains and the rescue horses there may hold the balm his soul needs. These two are about as far apart as opposites can be, yet beneath their initial vehement dislike for each other, something draws them together.
Probst has been a go-to author for me for quite sometime, so it was a no-brainer when I had the opportunity to read an early copy of this book, and it was every bit as great as I anticipated it would be. This book wraps around the reader like a warm, cozy blanket gently carrying her on a delightful, heartfelt journey. With a damaged hero in need of mending, a strong, determined heroine with a cause, a troubled teen in need of guidance and acceptance and a lovelorn chicken (yes, you read that right, a chicken) this book has a little of everything. From humor to heat, to heart to healing to finding home, Ethan and Mia's story is an absolute must-read and sure to please.
*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.
It was this close to being my favorite. It's been a while since the last time I read Jen Probst's book and man, I miss her writing so much! It's simple yet brought out something different than any other contemporary romance that I read. I adore both Ethan and Mia because both carry a different kind of burden yet they can solve them together. I was a wee bit disappointed with the revelation of Chloe's problem though because I was expecting something major going on. But overall, a perfect book to spend your evening with. Look forward to reading more!
The Start of Something Good is an amazing start to a new series by Jennifer Probst!
Ethan Bishop never thought that he would return to his home town and help run the family's horse rescue/farm. His dreams were to be in the Special Forces and help save other's lives. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for him.
Mia Thrush is fighting to make a name for herself in the PR world in New York City. She's on the brink of making the big time with her current client who is running for Mayor. When her client asks her to look after his daughter for the summer to make sure she stays out of trouble, she wants to refuse profusely! Unfortunately, she knows that sacrifices must be made and endures spending the summer on a horse rescue farm. Mia is the epitome of a city girl; she wears designer labels, is on a strict diet (so that she can fit into her dream Gucci dress) and has to have her Starbucks every day.
When she meets Ethan and sees where she's spending her summer never in the world does she expect to survive. Her character and the interactions she has with Ethan are so funny.
I love how even though Ethan didn't want to come home he truly finds himself again by working with one particular challenging horse who he names Phoenix. Mia's character also comes a very long way throughout the book and she discovers that throughout the summer she changes as well.
The Start of Something Good is a truly beautiful romance and I loved reading every page.
This is my first Jennifer Probst book in a looong time. Not because I dislike her but because I just have too many books to read!
Ethan charmed the pants right off me from the start. He’s got some issues for sure but it’s immediately apparent how wonderful he is. Mia took some time to get to like but she grew on me and I ended up loving her with Ethan.
The secondary story regarding Jonathan was intriguing and I hope to see more of him and his daughter in future stories (no, this is not a lobe triangle at all. He’s simply a secondary character with a story in my opinion).
I’m pretty sure Hei Hei stole the show. A lovely variety of animals appear in the story and since I’m a sucker for rescue animals, the greatly enhanced the story for me. Can’t wait to read the next in this series!
The Start of Something Good is a book about two polar opposites who eventually fall in love. Jennifer Probst's writing is wonderful, as always. Ethan and Mia's story struck the perfect balance. Probst also managed to provide us with secondary characters who were very interesting as well.
I've really enjoyed some of Jennifer Probst's series, specifically Marriage to a Billionaire, Searching For and The Billionaire Builders , so I was excited to see she had a new series in the works.
The Start of Something Good is the first book in Probst's new Stay series, and fans of her work won't be disappointed. The story has all the elements that fans of Probst will enjoy. Close knit family, emotional writing and characters who tug at your heart-strings and great sexual chemistry.
There were lots of elements that made The Start of Something Good an enjoyable read for me.
My family loves Disney movies so I loved seeing this incorporated into Ethan's family
Chloe added a wonderful element as a young woman going through her own struggles. I enjoyed that both Mia and Ethan bonded with Chloe and helped mentor her even though it wasn't their responsibility. The interactions that included her added a depth to their relationship that would have been missing without her.
I adored Ethan's sisters and am already looking forward to their stories. The epilogue tells me Ophelia has quite a history with Kyle. I wonder how Ethan will deal with the conflict between his childhood friend and his sister.
Hei-Hei the chicken, behold his majesty
If you enjoy contemporary romances centered around families and small town settings than The Start of Something Good is for you.
