On the cover is Elsie dressed as a nurse ready to save the wounded. A catchphrase says a lot about the two main characters: "friendship will see it through the darkest time".
The story takes place during the First World War. We find Mairi and Elsie two nurses who become friends. They work hard to save the wounded. There will be ups and downs in their work. They will do everything to stay welded despite the stress.
An exciting story about the work of two nurses during the First World War. What attracted me to read this book is the cover and it's based on a true story. The characters of Mairi and Elsie are endearing, the story is well written I recommend it.
3.5**** This was an interesting story, based on the true story or two ordinary women who did extraordinary things in a time and place that no one should have had to experience. The story was enjoyable, though the characters annoyed me at times, Mairi was terribly naive and though she grew somewhat throughout the nearly 4 years spent on the front, in many respects she remained as naive as at the beginning. I definitely recommend it if you are interested in reading about the history of the many brave people who supported the soldiers during the war. I was amazed how little people back in Britain knew about what was going on in the war and how they went along with life as if nothing was happening.
I will definitely be happy to read Lizzy's next book in this historical series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy in return for an honest review.
I typically devour books, but I had trouble getting hooked by The War Nurses. I basically did not like either of the main characters, Elsie or Mairi, as portrayed in this book. That said, the work these two women did was incredible.
I had a really hard time getting into this book. Mairi came across as a very immature 12 year old, not an adventurous young adult. Since I did not finish the book, I do not intend to publish a review.
Review: I would like to thank Kim Nash at Bookouture for asking me to be apart of the blog blitz for this book.
I really enjoyed this book. I love a good book set in the war and this is one such book. Lizzie Page has created an in-depth fictional story that follows two very different women who are doing their bit for the country. Elsie and Mairi face heartache, overwhelming struggles, time for friendship and happiness while making the most of their situations during and war. While reading I got lost within the story, I felt what the characters felt and good really get a sense of what it would feel like to be there.
A great book full of friendship and hope during the war.
Lizzie has written a compelling book bringing many emotions to the surface. A brilliant saga novel.
Can't wait for the next one.

I read “The War Nurses” not knowing it was based on real people. Finding that out at the end was a pleasant surprise. The story begins slowly, although not in an all together unpleasant or tedious way. You learn a lot about Mairi and enough about Elsie to keep you interested. Mairi is a clear and reliable narrator in my opinion and you really see her grow up. I enjoyed the fact that she was a Christian and relied on her beliefs to help ensure the horrible things happening around her. It was an interesting contrast to pair Mairi’s faith with Elsie’s atheism. The scenes of WW1 although descriptive are not enough to turn one off enjoying the story but do educate the reader a bit on the atrocities that took place during the period. Overall, it was an interesting fictional narrative based on real people and I would recommend it to friends.
I thank my friends at Netgalley for the copy of this in exchange for my honest review.
A very nice wartime story. It's basically about a group of strangers enlisted as ambulance crew, drivers and first aiders. They are from different walks of life. I enjoyed reading it but having read numerous war stories I didn't find this one offered anything new. Thanks a million Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book.
