I want to thank NetGalley and Harlequin for the ARC of The Life Lucy Knew by Karma Brown. This book will be available at your favourite bookstore on June 12, 2018.
Lucy wakes up in a hospital bed after spending several weeks in a coma caused by a bad fall. She is surrounded by her parents, and Matt, her boyfriend. She recognizes her family, but her memories of the past four years do not match reality. Her relationship with Matt is threatened by false memories. Lucy is confused and is trying to gain back those four years, but not everyone is honest with her.
The story is interesting and well structured. I really liked how Karma Brown developed Lucy's relationships with each character. I would have given it 4 stars, but the ending twist is a bit anticlimactic and left me with too many unanswered questions.
Very, very very good book! It catches you right away and pulls you further and further into the story of a young woman suffering from a head injury and whose memories have been rewritten by her brain. I cannot fathom the idea of not knowing what my real reality is when there are so many secrets being held by others out of concern for my well being. Reading how the main character, Lucy, navigates her new reality and tries to come to terms with her false memories is truly engrossing and fascinating.
Great book. I felt bad for Lucy for what she had to endure. I can't imagine waking up and not knowing about my past and being so unsure about my future. The story is well told and feels like a memoir.
Thank you Net Galley and Harlequin for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Karma Brown and netgalley.com for a great read. I empathized so much with Lucy, because like her, I hit my head badly six months ago. Unlike her, I did not lose or confuse any memories of my life leading up to the accident. In reading her story, I realized that I could have easily met with a similar fate, and learned a lot about how our brains work. This book was definitely a page turner for me, and I recommend it highly.
Lucy Sparks is happily married, has a fantastic job, and has the best memories of her life...only her memories aren't her own. A nasty fall leaves her confused, having forgotten her relationship with her boyfriend and co-worker Matt, her family's big life events, and who she really is. What her doctor calls honest lying is really her brain filling in the blanks and when Lucy tries to live normally she finds that what her head knows and what her head remembers are very different.
I love a good memory loss novel, movie, or TV show, so of course I was all over The Life Lucy Knew by Karma Brown. Lucy is written in a way that makes you really care for her and believe her predicament. She's sweet, naive in this new position, and very kind hearted. It is very obvious that she cares for her family, her friends, and her spouse, even if she has the wrong one in her memories. The fictitious memories seem very real, with Lucy able to describe them down to the exact details, but as she tries to recover her memories she begins to understand that though the memories are real, some may not even be her own. It was fairly realistic in the sense that I had never heard of false memories, but I could believe in it for the story. Lucy's emotions are all over the place, her family and friends try everything, and some of the events that follow her waking up are hard, but necessary. I appreciated that it wasn't all easy and that it wasn't truly a romance, but rather a story of a woman dealing with a difficult event and overcoming it despite the speed bumps along the way.
The Life Lucy Knew was a nice break from my usual reads and was just the sort of pacing I was looking for. I do wish the epilogue had more to it, but ultimately I enjoyed the story. It's the kind of novel you read while relaxing by the pool or cozied into a blanket, the story not over dramatic or filled with angst.
THE LIFE LUCY KNEW is a thought-provoking, entertaining look at "what if." Throughout the story Lucy Sparks - our likable, relatable heroine - questions her past decisions in the wake of memory loss. How did she end up here? What does it mean to be happy? Did she pick the right guy? How might things have turned out differently? With her trademark wit and emotion, Karma Brown delivers another winner. This novel will grab you from page one.
Loved this book! Great story in losing your memory and what you think you know about yourself. Definitely a page turner.
The Life Lucy Knew was an interesting and entertaining read. I enjoyed the unique storyline, I had no idea that false memories were a thing and that what happened to Lucy was something that could actually happen. So mind boggling! I know that I have no idea how I would act if I were in Lucy's position, but for most if the book she really annoyed me. That's the main reason for a 4 star rating rather than 5 stars. I really enjoyed the book overall

I couldn’t finish, after 4 chapters I thought the book was so unreal that I just gave it up. A woman lost her past memories and thought she was married to someone else, her currently “boyfriend” apparently sticks around. So the popular plot about a woman that lost her memory is a “thing” now.
Thank for the ARC.
A special thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of The Life Lucy Knew.
Lucy awakens from a coma from a completely different life than what she has. She has memories of being married to Daniel, but when she comes to she finds her co-worker Matt by her side.
Lucy’s therapist calls her condition “honest” lying. Her memories are false, but real to Lucy.
Once again, an excellent read by Ms. Brown.
Lucy falls and hits her head and when she awakens, her life isn't what she thinks it is. While Lucy was in a coma, her mind made up its own reality. What would you do if you woke up and your entire life is different than what you believe it is? This book is quite the page turner and I read it one evening. I loved Lucy! She is honest in her emotions, her relationships are flawed and real, and I felt everything she felt. The ending was perfect in my eyes and I laughed while I read and plus I ugly cried too. It is an emotional read that I truly loved! I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley and HARLEQUIN - Hanover Square Press (U.S. & Canada). All opinions are my own.
A special thank you to NetGalley and Park Row Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lucy Sparks hits her head after suffering a winter weather related fall. When she wakes up in the hospital with her parents and co-worker, Matt, by her side, she wonders where her husband, Daniel, is. She believes that Daniel is her husband, but he's actually her ex-boyfriend that she hasn't spoken to in four years.
She is suffering from what are fictitious memory recollections and her life as she knows it is completely different from her actual life. Essentially, it's like honest lying—Lucy's memories are false, but because she can even recall such vivid detail, the memories seem incredibly real to her. Given that Lucy's memory can't be trusted and that this may be a permanent condition, it is a devastating experience for her friends, family, and especially for Matt. You see Matt is Lucy's doting boyfriend, not just her coworker which is how Lucy remembers him.
Despite Matt's best efforts, Lucy continues to have feelings for Daniel. Lucy must make a difficult choice about which life she wants to lead, who she wants to lead it with, and who she really is.
Karma Brown is one of my new favourite authors. I had the pleasure of attending an author event featuring Karma last May and she is delightful! It was a high tea and book signing at the King Eddy in Toronto that was hosted by BookClubbish. Lainey, as in gossip maven, etalk correspondent, co-host of The Social, and founder of laineygossip.com Lainey, joined Karma for a Q&A session. The women chatted about the writing process—Lainey has also has written a book Listen to the Squawking Chicken: When Mother Knows Best, What's A Daughter To Do? A Memoir (Sort Of)—what it's like being a woman in the publishing industry, and where Karma gets her inspiration from. Both ladies were well-spoken and super interesting! If you have an opportunity to attend an event with Karma, I highly recommend you do so, you won't be disappointed.
For fans of Karma's books, The Life Lucy Knew is a bit of a detour in style, but one that I liked! Without giving anything away, the ending of this novel is further developed than her other stories and in this case it really worked. Also unique to this book was all of the Canadian references and I enjoyed Toronto's presence in the story.
Karma is such a gifted writer. There were a few decisions that could have gone either way, and any of those scenarios would have worked because her writing is that good. Congratulations, Karma. Another fantastic read and I can't wait for your next book!
