This was a really enjoyable book. Great holiday reading, believeable characters and easy to dip in and out of. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will look out for future titles by Josie Silver
This book is funny, heartbreaking and fell good all at the same time. Be ready to have tissues at hand because you'll need them. I immediately became engrossed in this book even though this type of thing is not my usual read. Judging by the other reviews on here I would say this book is marmite you're either going to love it or hate it. Whether or not you're still hopeful about finding the one or not this book will make you feel like it's possible. Fantastic writing style.
I am in charge of our Senior School library and am looking for a diverse array of new books to furnish their shelves with and inspire our young people to read a wider and more diverse range of books as they move through the senior school. It is hard sometimes to find books that will grab the attention of young people as their time is short and we are competing against technology and online entertainments.
This was a thought-provoking and well-written read that will appeal to young readers across the board. It had a really strong voice and a compelling narrative that I think would capture their attention and draw them in. It kept me engrossed and I think that it's so important that the books that we purchase for both our young people and our staff are appealing to as broad a range of readers as possible - as well as providing them with something a little 'different' that they might not have come across in school libraries before.
This was a really enjoyable read and I will definitely be purchasing a copy for school so that our young people can enjoy it for themselves. A satisfying and well-crafted read that I keep thinking about long after closing its final page - and that definitely makes it a must-buy for me!
Really liked the concept of this story but I have to say I got bored half way through and found the story quite predictable. Never finished.
This is a late review of this lovely book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Will they, won't they get together as the years pass by..
A good read about friendships and love.
This has to be the most sweetest book I’ve read in a long time it was beautiful.
I loved Laurie and jacks story in alternate ..everything happens for a reason
Five stars
Back in December, 2018, I was looking at my bookshelf for a good holiday read. I passed over a cowboy Christmas book and a historical Christmas book and then stopped. One Day in December by Josie Silver caught my eye. On the cover was a girl on a London bus and a man standing under a streetlight in the snow. I didn’t remember where I had even picked it up, but it looked like it might be the one.
Perfect holiday books aside, do you believe in the idea of knowing the one when you see them? Laurie James certainly didn’t until the day in December when her bus pulled up to a stop and there she saw him. Their eyes met, and she knew, and she thought she saw that he knew too. But then the bus pulled away, and for the next twelve months, she searched for bus boy with the help of her dearest friend, Sarah.
Author Ms. Silver had me at the endearment bus boy. I mean really, who doesn’t want to believe that there is the perfect person out there, waiting, knowing that if you could just actually meet everything would be happily ever after. I read with Disneyesque twinkles in my eyes for the first nineteen pages. Oh, how I knew Laurie would find her Prince Charming. She had to. I laughed, I cried, I was reminded of every romantic chic flick in the era between When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually.
One Day in December wasn’t all mistletoe and tinsel, however, and in between pages twenty and four hundred and four, life got pretty darn complicated for Laurie. There were times I didn’t even want her to find bus boy anymore. This book had me wanting to skip to the end to make sure it had its happily ever after (I didn’t, I wanted to, but I didn’t.) I will say that pages four hundred and five to four hundred and seventeen had tears pouring down my face, as every good holiday story should. One Day in December ended up being the right one after all.
What an amazing book. I was hooked from the start. I suppose a little predictable due to the title of the book, I was desperate to find out how Laurie and Jack make it together
One Day in December by Josie Silver is one of the best romantic comedies that I have read in a long time. It reminds me of that classic film - Love Actually mixed in with One Day from David Nicholls. It raises the question, whether you can fall in love at first sight and also makes the reader question the boundaries between love, friendship and loyalty. At the heart of the novel is the frinedship between our heroine Laurie, her fiery best friend Sarah and the smart, witty Jack. The novel presents ten years of their life through a series of dramatic, sometimes comedic life changing events. I loved this novel and instantly related to Laurie and was proud of her story arc, from ambivalent hotel worker to landing her dream job ten years later. It made me feel that though her love life was important and central to the story, she was still able to focus on her career.
Thankyou for Net Galley for letting me have an early read of this wonderful book. I look forward to reading more from Josie Silver in the future.
I really enjoyed this book, Laurie meets the love of her life but only through a bus window. She searches for him and eventually he turns up as her best friends boyfriend. The story moves on through this and it keeps you hooked til the end. A good chick flick book would recommend
One evening, just before Christmas, Laurie is on the top deck of a London bus. When it stops, she sees a guy sat at the bus stop and they have a moment.
Before he can get on the bus/before Laurie can get off, the bus leaves the stop and Laurie misses her chance.
Despite looking for him for a year, Laurie is convinced that she will never find ‘bus boy.’ That is until her best friend introduces her new boyfriend.
One Day in December is not a typical boy meets girl story and this is one of the things I liked most about it (not that I am not a fan of the more conventional love stories.)
Told from the point of view of Laurie and Jack, I liked how I could get to know them and see the different thoughts, feelings and opinions.
The plot is compelling. The story builds at a good pace – it’s very much about the characters. All the twist and turns revolve around their story and behaviours.
Laurie, Sarah and Jack are wonderful characters. Josie not only shows the good about them but the flaws too; all the aspects of their personalities. They don’t always act in a heroic way. They seemed very realistic and with the story being set over ten years, I felt as though I really got to know them all. (Actually, the only two characters I didn’t like were Lucille and Cressida.)
one day in december bannerI can never resist books with any kind of Christmas setting and this was a lovely book to curl up with in the evening with a cup of warm tea. It made me feel very festive and I loved that. I think this book is perfect if you like a good love story. In my opinion, it reminded me of One Day and Where Rainbows End in its themes which includes love, loss, friendship and having the courage to seize the opportunity for love when it presents itself. I think that these the overall messages of the novel.
I don’t want to say anything else about it as I don’t want to ruin it. I loved this book. It does what a book should do which is to send you on a rollercoaster of emotions. I very much recommend it. Oh and the cover is absolutely beautiful.
What a wonderful read, it reminded me of One Day and Love Actually. It is about a girl called Laurie who spies the man of her dreams through a steamed up bus window in December and fall instantly and irrevocably in love. She looks for him together with her best friend Sarah for the best part of a year and then one day Sarah introduces her to new boyfriend and it is Jack the guy from the bus!!
What follows is a tale of love between best friends and also a journey of missed opportunities. Should she tell her best friend and will she be able to hide the chemistry between them. On ten different occasions opportunities arise where she is thrown back together with him..... It is a wonder read that twists and turns. Highly recommended.
This is a light chick lit, probably most suited to female readers in their mid to late 20s. It is a story about Jack and Laurie and their feelings of attraction towards each other with a twist - Jack is Sarah's boyfriend and Sarah is Laurie's best friend.
It is a pleasant and quick read, not too taxing at all. Both story and characters feel fairly uni dimensional and there is quite a lot of telling rather than showing throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest and impartial review.
Wonderful romance, loved the premise and the writing - just what's needed for a winter read. I thought the characters were lovable and engaging and I was really hoping everything would work out for them. Totally engrossing read.
Laurie sees whom she believes to be her soulmate from the top of the bus. After searching for him for a year, he turns up in her life again - as her best friend's boyfriend. This book follows the lives of Laurie, Jack and Sarah, their hopes and dreams and their relationships.
Written in a lovely, light style, this book is very easy to read but it does rather skip over some of the emotions involved, and the reader never quite comes to care about the characters as much as we should.
This book is pure joy. It’s written with a warmth that radiates off the page and is enough to brighten up any dreary December (or January, in my case) day. Laurie first sees Jack through a bus window, and she falls in love with him at first sight. She and her best friend Sarah spend a year looking for him, and then Sarah finds a new man and brings him home to meet Laurie, and it’s Jack. One Day in December then follows Laurie and Jack, narrated by both of them, for the next decade, as they navigate relationships, marriage, breakups, loss and friendship.
As much a love letter to friendship as it is a love story, this novel is all heart. The relationship between Laurie and Sarah is so well-drawn and truly moving, and the feelings Laurie and Jack have for one another, even when they’re doing their best to hide them, are always vivid. I genuinely didn’t want this book to end.
I received a digital ARC of #OneDayInDecember from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
What a truly amazing story of love and friendship over a ten year period! This really is what a love story is all about! Having just finished it I feel emotionally spent but with a warm fuzzy feeling inside too. This is the story of how 1 split second decision can alter the course of your life. You can't unmake the decision. You just have to live with the consequences of it, however devastatingly difficult that can be.
I loved the friendship between Sarah and Laurie. All the way through I was rooting for Jack and Laurie to find a way of being together. I'm glad to say that this isn't one of those cheesy predictable books like some romantic fiction ones. The road was not an easy one for either Jack or Laurie.
I haven't read anything by Josie Silver before but I will definitely read her work in the future. I was fully invested in this book and the characters. I felt like I knew them and was part of their friendship group. I am gutted that their stories have come to an end!
I thought this book had a great promising start but I'm not sure about the man the main character fell for meeting her best friend and neither of them being able to keep quiet. I enjoyed the story though and of course everything turns out right in the end.
3.5 stars
I enjoyed this feel-good, fluffy and easy read. Although not my usual or preferred genre, it was a perfect break from gritty crime and psychological thrillers. Everyone needs a doze of romance from time to time and One Day in December is a perfect recipe.
Really nice, warm and fuzzy love story! Perfect Christmas read and am really looking forward to reading more from this author!
