Honestly this was probably more 3.5 stars than 3 as I really enjoyed the story arc, it was mostly the random side adventures that were just mediocre at best. The artwork was great and the writing was as well. The story arc was cohesive with enough surprises to keep me wanting more and more. There's some minor swearing in a few places and definitely violence but it's not as violent as many superhero comics I've seen. None of it is really gory, just blood so this would be safe for older kids and up. Overall, it is worth a read and I'll gladly continue to follow but I would love to see some more relevant side arcs in the future.
I would like to thank the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled when I was approved for this because I have been a long time love of graphic novels and comics. Loving all things Marvel and DC I quickly sent in a request for this title when I saw it on NetGalley. Unfortunately, I wasn't so thrilled reading it. The main story did not really flow well and seemed like it wasn't thought out thoroughly before they put it into action. I realize that I had very large expectations going into this and I shouldn't hold it up to other Wonder Woman things that have come out in the past year, but it was kind of hard not to. The illustration was pretty decent in this graphic novel and I was completely let down by it. I really wanted to give it more than 3 stars and wish I could have.
Wonder Woman Vol.5: Heart of the Amazon is everything I love about Wonder Woman in bright visual form. I devoured this book in one setting. The book would have had to been pried out of my hands until I turned that last page. The innate goodness of Wonder Woman is brought to life as she deals with the loss of those that cannot be saved and those who wish to use her to do harm. The "Heart of an Amazon" is a grand thing as she protects those she loves and those she swore to protect in an excellently written story. Diana's origin story blends into the story line seamlessly to give the reader the beginnings of the great warrior in a sweet glimpse of Wonder Woman as a child. The art changes up a little from issue to issue but is superb just the same- bright, colorful, and splendidly drawn- for a must read for Wonder Woman fans. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Well, this was disappointing.
I usually enjoy when a new writer takes the reigns on Wonder Woman-- it often means that we'll get some fun, fresh material. That wasn't the case here. This was a tired story that has been done in one way or another in pretty much every super hero series at one point or another. The art was awful to boot-- the cover art was ugly, the internal art looked amateurish and heavily influenced by shojo manga, which made everybody just look silly and cutesy instead of being the powerful, interesting characters they normally are.
It was just bad. All the bonus stories were dumb, too.
