LOVED this book!! It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. Very twisty at the end!
Wow, prepare for non-stop action! From the first page until the last there's never a dull moment. An extremely enjoyable read! Thank you Random House and NetGalley. #RandomHouse #NetGalley
It started off fairly strong but falls a bit short towards the end.
Compared to the last thriller I read (Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber), this one has built somewhat better characters. But the main character is just not that likable. She said it perfectly herself, "I might actually be the world's most naive criminal. Completely oblivious. I'm lucky I'm not dead yet." She's the definition of a naive middle-class "good girl", always doing stuff that's obviously stupid to anyone but her own eyes. Speaking of which, the "good girls gone bad by accident" idea can actually make pretty badass characters. The TV series Good Girls proved that. I would have liked this book a lot more if Erin is more like Beth from that show.
I guessed the biggest twist at about halfway through. There were hints here and there, it's not very subtly done. I think if you're an experienced thriller reader, you'd be able to pick them up. But I don't think this book is mainly aimed at experienced thriller readers who might have read a ton of twisty dark thrillers. This is meant to be a light read with a hint of darkness. In short, it's supposed to be a bestseller that lives in housewives' purses. And I think it's just that. I thought this was going to be like Gone Girl, but it's actually more like Girl on The Train. The suspense's not too much, it's kind of a standard domestic thriller. I have a feeling that it's going to be a pretty successful bestseller, but maybe not as big as Girl on the Train. Hopefully, they can get the movie done tastefully, I do think it's a good premise for a decent thriller film.
After reading other reviews for this book, I hate to add negativity but, honestly, I finally had to quit reading. The language was just too offensive for my sensitive eyes. Also, it was taking a long time to get to the real story. I wish there were a way to know in advance when a book would be filled with profanity! And that's the reason I'm submitting this review... sort of a warning for others.
Awesome read!!! Really enjoyed! I did want to yell at the main character several times and tell her to use her brain but overall this was a fun beach summer read! I’ve recommended it to readers on my Facebook book club page.
Erin and Mark are a madly in love couple, honeymooning in the paradise that is Bora Bora. While diving in the obscenely beautiful waters near the islands, Mark and Erin discover something that will alter their lives forever.
I mostly enjoyed this book very much. I gave it 4 stars as it drags in the middle some. The opening page is definitely an attention grabber. I was immediately drawn into the book. And the last 1/3 of the book was riveting. I couldn't put it down. Overall, it was fast paced and held my attention. I can't wait to see if this author writes another book.
You’re hooked from the first paragraph. Erin has Googled all the requirements to successfully bury the body she ends up with in the woods. Even more interesting is who the body is, or more appropriately, was. A fast-paced thriller, a who’s who and who can you trust, this is definitely my kind of book when I want to forget about all the silly issues of the day.
Erin and her hunky husband Mark are on their romantic honeymoon in Bora Bora. All is paradise, literally. During one of their dives, they find something on the ocean floor that forces them to make some life-altering choices. Nothing will ever be the same no matter what they choose.
As you witness their choices and the consequences of each choice, you may begin to get a bit suspicious of Mark. Why was he so gung-ho for he and Erin to take diving lessons? How did he manage, out of the entire blue sea, to pick a spot that reveals something in the water that absolutely no one knew was there? And how about Erin; is she as forthcoming as she presents herself to be? Why is she rubbing elbows with the three inmates she’s interviewing for a documentary, including a charismatic man who’s tracking her every move and sending huge, gaudy flower arrangements on a whim?
The predicament they find themselves in could happen to almost anyone. What would you choose? It’s a tempting decision and it makes for an entertaining cliffhanger read.
(I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you to Random House Publishing Group- Ballentine for making it available.)
I’m giving Something in the Water a 2/5 stars. I really thought that this book was just okay. I had so many high expectations for it. It seemed different and unlike a lot of books that I’ve read. This book also seemed to be receiving a fair amount of hype. I truly was excited to read this book. But it let me down. The writing was definitely not my favorite. It just seemed childish and not fit for the story being told. I loved how each chapter jumped around in time and place. I hate boring filler scenes between drastic changes in events. But the plot line seemed to me to be convoluted and hard to follow. So much emphasis was placed on the wedding yet we never even saw it. Everything that happened was very predictable and full of cliches. I will only recommend this book to people who like very cliche, simplistic mystery books.
Wow!! What a fantastic book! This book was a wild ride right from the beginning and all the way to the end. It kept me guessing about how all the different pieces fit together, and was full of twists and turns along the way. There were definitely times I was yelling at the main character in my head for her choices (WHY did you do that?!?!) but that's what kept the book exciting! The book kept rolling right through to the end. Erin and Mark, though they rarely made smart choices, were still interesting and engaging characters--they both reacted to the situation so differently. I also LOVED how the characters in Erin's documentary played a role in the book too.
I listened to the book on Audible, motivated by a large "to read" stack and Reese Witherspoon recommending it, and it was read by the author. It was FANTASTIC. I highly recommend listening to this one if you can.
This is one of the best I've read all year! I HIGHLY recommend this book!
Let me start by saying, I can’t BELIEVE this is a debut novel!! Bravo, Catherine!! It is so incredibly well written! I accidentally read this book in one day (whoops. Don’t ask what time I went to bed...I’m not entirely sure!)
A newlywed couple on their honeymoon discovers something shocking in the waters of Bora Bora. This all happens about 30% in so you’re sucked in QUICK!
This book is thrilling without being overwhelmed with detail which is so hard to do and makes it so easy to get sucked in. I’m often hesitant with thrillers because the details often haunt me for a while which can be unpleasant (I’m looking at you, Gone Girl...)
What surprised me most was the jumps over long time periods. You don’t have to work hard to figure out what happens next because you just CAN’T, there’s not enough moment to moment detail which leaves you enjoying the writing and not overanalyzing. SO difficult for a thriller!
Incredible read, very quick and delightful!
I am often kind with debuts, but this one was sloppily written and full of unnecessary detail that detracts from a weak story. Mostly stream-of-consciousness narration paired with a litany of hypothetical questions and a heroine who acts so stupidly (by her own admission, many times over) that the novel’s twist stops feeling like a twist and more like what we’d all do if we were married to her. Two stars because I had to read to the end, but mainly out of rage.
Erin and Mark have a bright future before them. Erin makes documentary films. Mark is an investment banker. They have a picture perfect London wedding planned....the perfect food, the perfect venue, the perfect honeymoon.....the perfect couple. Until...... Things start to go south and the couple finds themselves faced with a decision that will completely change both their lives irrevocably. Their situation raises two huge questions: What would you be willing to do to secure your "dream'' life? And, how well do you really know those closest to you?
This book opens with a shocker.....and never lets up. I loved it! So delightfully intriguing with a sinister edge. This is definitely a story that provokes "What would I do in this situation?" thoughts. And side-eye glances at those around me wondering "What would THEY do if they were in it with me?'' Chilling story. Well written. Perfect pacing. Kept my attention from start to finish. Steadman takes a picture perfect couple and pulls their life apart bit by bit. And then introduces a simple object that harbors a choice. Something seemingly benign....just floating in the ocean. It's amazing how easily perfect can start to crumble. One choice. A path chosen. Consequences. Totally chilling. So much fun to read!!
Catherine Steadman is an actress. This is her first book. I will definitely read more by her....this was a very enjoyable, suspenseful book!
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Random House/Ballentine via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
Must Read! This book is hard to put down. It is about a couple who get married and are on their honeymoon when they find something in the water.
The authour does a great job to keep you guessing what is going on until the very end.
The beginning of the book grabs you right away, you want to find out what is going on with this young couple and how did they get to where they are now.
A thought provoking thriller from a promising authoress, whose talents are clear from the first page to the last. The climactic point, after so much tension and question, was particularly satisfying to reach. I hope that Ms. Steadman will continue to author further works.
I had heard a lot of great things about this book so I really wanted to like it a lot. I read a lot of thrillers so, despite the fact that I enjoyed the story, I wasn't really as surprised about a lot of the twists and turns as I would've liked to be. I have heard great things about the audio version.
This was a suspenseful novel that definitely will hold your attention but there were just way to many things that didn't make sense to me. The change is Mark's personality over the course of just a few weeks was really unbelievable. Maybe if he and Erin had only been together for a few months before they got married it would have been plausible but the fact that they had been living together for 4 years and then he turned on her in a matter of days was very unrealistic. And it never made sense to me there reasoning for keeping the phone and USB - why didn't they just throw it back on the ocean? That would have solved a lot of their problems. Erin was pretty clueless at times and a little too trusting of everyone. But if you like psychological thrillers, this a fast paced easy read.
Wow, this is such a page turner! It started off a little slow, but then something happens and the pace picks up and never slows. I zipped through this book over the weekend and absolutely recommend it as a gripping, clever and entertaining summer read!
Two honeymooners, Erin and Mark, make a startling discovery in the waters off Bora Bora. Decisions are made about what to do with this discovery, and we follow the couple as they cope with the aftermath, both in terms of the discovery, itself, and their relationship.
I was very much looking forward to reading this book, but found it slow going and almost quit a few times. The characters are not particularly likable and parts of the story just felt skimpy and very unrealistic. I skimmed the last third of the book just to find out what happened at the end but was ultimately unsatisfied. Apparently you can become a criminal mastermind overnite and syndicate kingpins befriend you after meeting you for an hour.
I do thank Net Galley, the author, and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read Something in the Water in return for my honest review.
Wow - what a ride! This is the best thriller i’ve read in a long time. The story started off with a bang, and the tension never let up. Interesting to find out that the author is an actress who was in Downton Abbey.
This book.... what a crazy storyline. This is a fast read and one of those books you don’t want to end. It starts off light and fun and turns into a plot twisting thriller.
