Brown's merpeople are far from the friendly creatures of folklore; they are ruthless, menacing, and captivatingly dark. Calder's internal struggle between his primal instincts and his budding feelings for Lily adds layers of complexity to the narrative. The dynamic between Calder and his conniving mermaid sisters, coupled with Lily's unique personality, keeps the story engaging.

While some may find the romance predictable, Brown's skillful character development and vivid descriptions of Lake Superior's icy waters immerse readers in a world where beauty and danger collide. "Lies Beneath" offers a tantalizing glimpse into the hidden depths of mermaid lore, leaving readers eager to explore further in this captivating series.

I won't be able to leave a review for this book; I requested it in a past lifetime of my NetGalley use (about ten years ago!) and it no longer fits with my reading interests. If I ever do end up reading it I'll come back and update this!

Freshwater mer-people? A main character who is a merman? Evil beneath the surface of the water? Yes! Sign me up. I had very high expectations for this book but quickly found myself in the depths of the water. I didn't find the characters likeable or particularly well-developed.

I requested this title back before my blogging break. I have ended up with a number of titles that are overwhelming to catch up on now I am back from my blogging break. I am regretfully not going to be reading and reviewing this title, but now I am back from my blogging break, I am looking forward to reading and reviewing some of your future titles. Thank you so much for the opportunity and apologies.

I love mermaids... and killer mermaids?! This was so fun to read. I loved both the characters and the setting!

I've heard some mixed reviews on Lies Beneath, some not so good and some really good. I really don't understand the bad reviews, because this book is all kinds of awesome. These are the kind of mermaids I love, the killing frightening kind.

As I already stated the take on mermaids is awesome and very unique. Mermaids don't have to be the good kind for there to be romance and swooning. Calder and Lily prove that is Lies Beneath. I LOVED Calder, he was a great characters perspective to read from. He's hot, funny and a great guy for a murderous mermaid. I loved how he tried to hold onto his human side, since he wasn't born a mermaid but made one.

Lily as a love interest for Calder was a bit odd, but that just makes her all the more realistic, she has her flaws which is great to see in a book character. This is one of the few books that I actually liked the insta-love, to me it was really well done and not agonizing to read. In fact I loved it..

I absolutely enjoyed all the struggles that Calder and Lily have to go through, with Calders evil sisters, and the complications that stand between Calder and Lily being together. Towards the end of the book was the best part in my opinion. There is a bery shocking twist in the plot that is awesome, which leads to the heart wrenching conclusion. Cannot wait until the next book to see what happens next, I hear it will be told in Lily's point of view. That would be interesting to see, but a major reason why I loved the book as much as I did was because of Calder.

Lies Beneath is a must read book for fans of mermaids, romance, and of course the supernatural genre. Evil, murderous mermaids, a great main character, and get writing and story telling. What more could you possibly want in a book?

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown has a Romeo & Juliet twist. Murderous mermaids seeking revenge! Calder, brother to the mermaids, is sen to lure the human they think is responsible for their mother's death into the water. But, Calder falls in love with his daughter in the process. This can't end well...

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.

Reviewing old arcs, have tried to read but couldn't get into. Won't be trying again so no formal review will be posted on social media.

I really liked the book without loving the main character. It's a paranormal romance and the main character, Calder, was the jerky type that I don't love. But I dug the overall story and the myths Anne wove there.

As a kid, I was obsessed with mermaids - I devoured any media about them I could get my hands on. That phase didn't last forever, because I found that most of the books and shows in that genre began to feel repetitive. When I found out about this book, I was thrilled. It seemed very different to any of the other YA mermaid books I've read: the mermaids are darker and more true to old fairy tales. I loved the quality of writing, the character development and the emotional plot line of this book.

I wanted to love this book so much. It's the first mermaid book I've read since of course Little Mermaid, but it just didn't do it for me. I was able to finish it, but honestly, I just felt meh about it. I didn't enjoy the main character or connect in any way and that might be the reason.
