Now, this is how Shakespeare should be adapted to manga! Modernised language but not slangy nor excessively modern, faithful to the original plot without outrageous omissions or additions & changes, beautiful art with expressive faces and lovely settings. This is what I'll be showing the children when they want to read a classic in graphic novel/manga version, as it's simply one of the best in Udon's Manga Classics series.

I just could not get into this. Old English is not for me. I speak english as a second language, but this just too hard to understand and although i liked the illustrations, it was confusing and very boring.
Thank you for Netgalley for the ebook.

(First of all, thank you so much NetGalley, publisher, and author, for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review)

I can't believe searching for books in Netgalley that I would find a manga version of Romeo and Juliet. I have been in love with this story since I first read it so many years ago and I love to read and watch different adaptations. So of course I requested this manga and I enjoyed it so much. I love the drawings and the sketch of the characters at the beginning of the manga. I really, really recommend it.

I love this adaptation! It's very faithful, it maintains the language of Shakespeare. The illustrations are beautiful and I definitely recommend it to manga fans and fans of Shakespeare who enjoy comics as a whole.

This is an absolutely beautiful rendition of the classic tale. The characters are wonderfully drawn and give a depth to the story that I hadn't previously seen with just reading it.

I shared the story with my children and the teen was thoroughly impressed. They said it gave them a much better understanding of the story and it actually helped them pass their lesson on Romeo and Juliet with flying colors.
My younger daughters (7-9) also loved this book as the action was easy to follow. I feel like this book was a great addition to the Classics series and would work for all ages, story content and appropriateness considered.

This graphic novel was brilliant. I wish this book was around when I was at school as I would of understood the book so much better than I did. I just loved how easy it was to read and understand with brilliant pictures connected with the old English words of William Shakespeare. It makes it so much easier to understand the contect the morals and means of his words. This is why I really believe this book should be read in all schools or it could be a handy book to have open as you read the full text as Shakespeare wrote. The pictures were just so expressive making the story so much more powerful to read . It aided the intake of the old English language. I recommend this book for children and adults alike as you can really learn from reading it and it's more of a fun and very enjoyable medium. I just couldn't put this novel down and had to read it in one sitting. I really do look forward to reading more classics through graphic novels.

So much praise goes to the creators and publishers for bringing such powerful story to life. Also creating such a wonderful supportive reflection of a literary masterpiece.

This is one of my favourite classics, and being able to read it in a different way was nice. I'm not really into manga, but I really enjoyed this one. It doen't change the original story, it illustrates it and it makes it easier for people that are not into classics to be able to read them. I just think that it was a nice read and that everybody can enjoy it.

The art was absolutely stunning! You could tell all the characters apart and they definitely did not suffer from the common ‘same face syndrome’.

This is a great introduction into Shakespeare’s works. It is less of a hurdle with its drawings and more simple language. I suggest reading this book if you are looking to get into Shakespeare or have already read some of his works.

Overall, it was a wonderful adaptation.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this manga book uses Shakespeare's original text, rather than modernized, simplified language for a young audience! Of course it is abridged, but it does a wonderful job of introducing kids to Shakespeare's rich and memorable stories and immortal lines in a gentle and entertaining way. This book will no doubt make young readers feel hooked on Shakespeare and perhaps even inspire them to act out their own versions of Romeo and Juliet.

Love this adaptations, this takes a story we all know and puts in a different media that is easily assessable for many people. Super fun and adds another layer of enjoyment to the story. 10/10 would recommend.

I really love this classic by Shakespeare and reading it in the manga style was a treat. The illustrations really added to the stories and the cosy feeling of the books. If you enjoy manga and these classics I would highly recommend picking up these editions.

Thank you Netgalley for giving me the chance to read this book for free.

I've been trying to read and re-read classics that I haven't read since high school. Romeo and Juliet is William Shakespeare's most know work. It is a tale of love and heartache that can make even the coldest of hearts feel something. I've read many adaptations of Romeo and Juliet but never one like this. Reading it in a Manga style can be confusing for someone who has never read a manga before but it's quick to get the hang of it. For me, reading it in this style makes it even more dramatic than the story already was. The harsh lines that are used in the illustrations to represent movement and the dark, bold words used to emphasize loud noises really brings the story to life. If you like manga or like reading old stories in new and fun ways, I highly recommend this one. I enjoyed it much more than the other manga classic editions.

I'll admit that I've never been a big fan of Romeo & Juliet as I think there are other more interesting of Shakespeare's works so I won't be going into detail reviewing the content since it's already pretty well known. I mostly want to talk about the character design and the artistic execution of the volume.

The art is **amazing** first and foremost. This is my second volume from artist Julien Choy who again displays that they are an an exceptional artist who has an eye for detail and panel composition. One thing I'm especially loving in not just this volume but other Manga Classics is that Choy retains the charm of manga with certain mannerisms and responses that just aren't typically seen in Western comics. The fact the art is so beautiful makes the tragedy at the end seem that much more tragic tbh. I especially love the designs of Mercutio and Count Paris, who have always been my particular favorites in other retellings. Tybalt's design is also a bit more sinister than I've seen before but I'm not complaining. The story flows almost better as a manga that any other medium I think (and I acted in a version of play in HS, haha) which in a way invigorates the play so much more.

The more titles from Manga Classics I read, the more excited I am to revisit stories that I haven't touched since my years at Uni studying literature. I'm so glad to see a classic made into a medium that newer generations will be eager to pick up.

This is my first Manga Classic and I honestly thought and hoped this manga would have been made with a new linguistic adaptation to make it more up-to-date style. Note that I've never read Romeo and Juliet, and if I did, I would have in French as English isn't my first language - and I struggled very hard understanding everything here with old English language. So I really wished it'd have text with modern english (or at least not the thou/thee/etc) but still with the same meaning. Sadly it wasn't! I should have checked first.

But overall I loved the adaptation of this classic into a manga! The art was really well done and it was I believe very well adapted. It's a really great way to start reading classic without having to read the original play. The story itself wasn't that great, honestly, but this is more Shakespeare's fault than this adaptation haha

Sorry, but this book wasn't my cup of tea. I had loved the Manga Classic version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" and had assumed this to be written in a similar vein. But this is the original text version and not a modern English version as I had assumed. Shakespeare's original text is too convoluted for my liking and my mind keeps getting distracted. As NetGalley needs me to rate this, I am giving it three stars because I am sure it will work well for the right kind of reader. Thanks for the opportunity to read it.

If you’ve ever wanted to read “Romeo and Juliet” in its original English and manga format, you should have a look at this piece of work, it’s just what you need! The 413 pages of illustrations is truly a masterpiece and reflects the original story really well. There are also pages of doodles of the characters and ... wait for it... the swords of the characters and with lot of background info! The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the setup of the e-manga (I reviewed an electronic copy) which started from the last page, so it was a bit difficult to scroll down through all those pages and then up again, my index finger was not happy with the experience. ;)

Special thanks to NetGalley, UDON Entertainment, and the editorial team for giving me the opportunity to review the ARC, and to you, my reader, for taking the time to read this honest personal book review.
