Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, in Manga format. This was absolutely fantastic. From what I could tell, it was the entire play unabridged, though I'd have to double check on that. I think it would make a great curriculum supplement or classroom/library addition, and students might enjoy reading on their own after a unit study as well. The art is great, and punctuates the scenes perfectly. I have nothing but praise for this book, and I look forward to checking out the others in the series.
Great artwork. Sticks to the overall plot. Would definitely give to kids studying Romeo and Juliet.
Thanks to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for the ARC.
I love reading manga's and this is my first manga classic I've ever read. The illustration was creative and it makes the story more interesting and fun, hoping to have more manga adaptations like these. I recommend this as a great place to start someone reading Shakespeare.
I really liked the art style in this Manga and the drama was much more prevalent in this version due to the facial expressions, mood and tone of the manga version
Romeo and Juliet is probably one of my favorite retellings. And I appreciated the anime version of this classic. It has many of the aspects of what makes Romeo and Juliet a class, but you can definitely see the anime influence in here. When I was reading, I could picture every scene as a moving animation, which goes to show how well the scenes are written out and how detailed the drawings are. Even though the original story of Romeo and Juliet is quite dry in my opinion, reading this anime version made me laugh and chuckle many times.
I would say my only real critique is the English. From my understanding, it seems that publisher wanted to keep the dialogue the same as the original, which makes sense. Even as someone who has read and analyzed plenty of William Shakespeare in the past for school, some of the conversations were a bit hard to read/understand. Perhaps, the publishers could have "modernized" it a bit in order to make it more accessible for other readings.
But overall, enjoyable read!
Classics being written as manga?? YES PLEASE! i loved reading this, romeo and juliet is such a timely classic, im every few years i love to watch the movie and i’m
not the biggest fan of the book so the manga was perfect! i loved the artwork especially!!
This was my first ever Manga book and I loved it! I can't wait to dive into more Manga and other graphic novels. The artwork was absolutely beautiful, it brought a whole other element to reading this classic Shakespeare story of Romeo and Juliet. Loved it so, so much!
Quite legit! The dialogue was so much like Shakespeare play that it really made me feel I was reading it in a new form. The drawing were standard, following to the T the whole play. I would recommend to people that love Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet and mangá it is a good way to re-live all the feelings from watching the play or reading it. A fun entertaining read!
This is my very first manga, so as a beginner it took me time to really grasp how to read this but I finally got the hang of it after a while.
The character drawing was very nice and dialogue were old English so I couldn't understand all of it but it still somehow made sense with all the amazing graphics and expressions with the characters. I have not read Romeo and Juliet before but had the basic idea so it was nice how the story developed and come into place. The way the scenario and emotions were shown was just brilliant though I couldn't really connect with the story or characters much, it just all seemed not well put together.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for providing a review copy.
This doesn't effect my review though.
Thank you to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for a copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
There are few things in life I am a sucker for more than a good manga and adaptations of Shakespeare - this is the best of both of those things. Romeo and Juliet is one of my guilty pleasures and so I was so excited when I realized this was a thing.
Having this story told through manga/comic form lets the reader see the absolute chaos that is this show, and the illustrator did a great job with that. While it does get hard at times to tell the characters apart, the age difference between Juliet and Romeo (and really all of her suitors) is pronounced which is missing when you are just reading the text - and in many adaptations honestly. Mercutio's sexual innuendos are more obvious with the imagery accompanying the text, and the illustrations just help with all of the dialogue overall since most people have a hard time with Shakespeare text. The Nurse is hilarious, and the illustrations of her expressions are perfect.
Shakespeare is not highbrow and I think people who have not read a lot of Shakespeare don't always know that. He wrote for the masses/common folk & put in a lot of sex jokes and I think the whole concept of having a manga version of R&J so it is easier to read would make the Bard very happy. R&J is a tragedy and not a love story, for sure, and this was definitely a fun way to read this story and see it all play out. 5/5
I love love those mangas. So beautiful and they give you your favourite story in a unique gorgeous way!
Definitely recommend!! Pick it up right now!
It's been a while since I've read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare! I honestly had fun reading this with the art making it come to life in a sense. I loved the manga art and it was funny seeing Romeo and Juliet look like ordinary anime romance protags. This version kept the full play intact but the translation is more modernized. I truly enjoyed this!!
I'd definitely recommend this to anybody who loves this tragic play by William Shakespeare and likes manga/anime.
I received Manga Classics: Romeo and Juliet through NetGalley and I'm voluntarily leaving this review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Udon Entertainment for a free copy.
I'm in love with the idea of taking old classics and remaking them in a graphic novel type format. The art style is stunning and I would be first in line to buy these in full color.
Romeo and Juliet is a bit different for me since it's one of my favorite plays. I've read a lot of different retellings and watched many of the different movie and television remakes (Including an anime). So this isn't exactly one of the classics I really struggle with, but there are quite a few that intimidate me which is what I love most about these editions outside of the stunning art. That being said while this is a manga the dialogue isn't as modern as the art style just to warn those that might find the Shakespearean dialogue a bit jarring.
My actual only issue with this manga has nothing to do with the actual Manga, but the eformat it's given in. I've read ebooks of Mangas before and I find it much easier to read it from right to left with page flips than in scrolling up.
This manga (comic book) is about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. So if you have read it, it's basically the book - drawn to capture its essence in a different form of art. I have read Romeo and Juliet back when I was in high school and had no interest to read it again until I stumbled upon this manga. The drawings remind me of typical manga drawings, especially mangas from the late 1990s to early 2000s. The writing style surprised me. I thought it would be written in modern English but they kept it similar to the dialogue in Shakespeare's original work.
What I really appreciate about this book is that since this is a Japanese comic, there's a guide on how to read it for some people with no idea that it's read from right to left, top to bottom. There's also a lot of research done to understand the story better which was added to the book at the end. I recommend this book to people who want to read Romeo and Juliet in a more convenient and understandable form.
A Delightful manga take on a classic. I enjoyed reading this and sharing with my Manga obsessed daughter.
4/5
Romeo and juliet is hands down one of my favorite classics out there. Reading this manga was such a cool experience. First of all I think classics are wonderful but hard to read and to get into, so reading a manga version is a great idea. What i loved the most is the artwork. It was stunning, every piece was amazing and really well done. The story is pretty much the same and they did a really good job translating it to the graphic version. Sure, it's not as dense as the original but you get pretty much all the info and the plot is well done. I can't wait to read more mangas about my fave classics
Thank you to UDON Entertainment and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this manga free in exchange for an honest review. #NetGalley
I'm not a big fan of Romeo and Juliet's story, but this manga is a great adaptation of the original. The art is very pretty, Juliet is beautiful and the characters are easy to distinguish. I loved how sometimes even the backgrounds were busy, with curious little details. The text wasn't altered, which on one hand was true to the original, on the other hand if the manga was intended for younger audiences, they'll have a hard time understanding it. I loved the 'behind the scenes' part, where we can see how the places and characters were created.
I think the Manga Classics edition of Romeo and Juliet is a great adaptation; I would definitely recommend it to manga fans!
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Romeo and Juliet, so I had hoped that the Manga would help me like it more. Honestly, I still don’t like it. As I’ve stated with a previous Shakespeare Manga Classic, I just don’t think his work adapts well to Manga. There’s too much going on on the page with both the art and the words that it’s hard to keep up with what’s going on at times. It gets confusing and overwhelming.
I love the Manga classics, but any of the Shakespeare adaptations are a no for me.
Thank you to @netgalley @mangaclassics @udonent for a digital copy in return for my honest review.

My thoughts…
Gorgeous. I just thought the artwork was gorgeous and fits perfectly with the original narrative. I was engaged in this graphic novel and it’s adaptation of this famous classic. The graphic novel illustrated the drama, romance, actions and facial expressions so well. I have not been disappointed with Manga Classics I have read so far. A great way to introduce yourself to classics.
