Enjoyable story with lots of interesting twists and turns. Fast paced, with good characters throughout.
Yikes. What a story. Good writing, lots of suspense and angst. I love strong heroines and Rory certainly is warrior woman tough. A keeper.
A wedding to please his mother, church of friends, and his bride doesn’t show. She had an intruder, became a bloodbath, and she runs. Would Liam track her down, they were already married, they had a child. Someone is watching her, when will it ever be safe. A lot of characters, a lot of action, that keeps you glued to find out who. Her books are always good.
Given ARC. by Kensington for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
A griping mystery from start to finish. The story starts out with a bang which sets the pace for the rest of the story. Full of twists and turns, you cannot predict what is going to happen from one chapter to the next. A well written suspenseful story!
OMG One Last Breath is a fantastic work by Lisa and Nancy! So well written keeping your interest, making your smile at the love and cry at the hurt. No one knows why the bride is not showing up, the music keeps repeating as they wait. Even though Liam and Rory were marred secretly a couple months before he still is sweating it out waiting for her show up and go down the isle in a wedding more fitting the family per his mother. What happened next is unbelievable totally crazy. Who wants them all dead? Where has his wife dissapeared to? It's been five years since that fateful day and Liam still can't move forward, he thinks he has but his heart still can't accept what happened and he longs for Rory.. Is he ready to divorce his missing wife and marry the socialite woman his mother wants him to marry? Rory has been hiding out for five years many times feeling paranoid like she's being followed but never spotting anyone. Now all of a sudden she see's her husband at her place of work. She panics realizing she and her daughter must flee and fast. She longs for Liam but she can't be sure it's safe.. Dark secrets well hidden must come to light. The murder subjects keeps growing, who is responsible? This book has new and interesting plots that keep you glued to the book. I couldn't put it down! So many twists and turns you don't know who's good and who's bad. A must read!
Once again Nancy Bush and Lisa Jackson have teamed up to write an engaging mystery. Though there were lots of characters to keep up with, I have to admit I didn't guess the culprit. I had my suspicions but then my guess turned up dead. From the first page I was hooked and had to stay up late just to find out who was behind all of the troubles plaguing Liam and Rory.
Rory is the quintessential runaway bride. Or is she? Not every bride runs from her wedding to save her own life. Who is she running from? Where will she go? Those are the questions running through her mind as she teys to escape the feeling of being followed, of being watched.
Entertainment at it's best. Good characterization. Smooth storyline.
5 Stars
The book started out a bit slow but I am so very glad I continued reading past the first few chapters. The story of Rory and Liam was intriguing. Rory's goal to protect her child at all costs was inspiring. I love when mysteries keep me guessing as to "who did it" and this book did not disappoint.
I've been a fan of Lisa Jackson for years. I enjoyed ONE LAST BREATH for the most part, but I also had some problems with it.
What I liked:Great suspense premise. Rory ran for her life the day of her wedding after being attacked, not realizing that her almost wedding was attacked with her fiance Liam and his father being wounded and her step-brother being killed. Rory also just discovered that she was pregnant and was going to tell him after the wedding. Five years later Liam tracks her down to find out why, because he's moved on with his life. When he finds out that he is a father, he is justifiably angry, but doesn't spend the next 1000 pages trying to punish Rory for not telling him.
What didn't work for me:Rory comes from a family of losers. Her mother was weak and married a bad man after she was widowed who had two sons. She also didn't listen to her daughter when she was made uncomfortable by one step brother. While I liked Rory for the most part, she was a good mother and hardworking, but she also was a runner who had to keep looking over her shoulder which wasn't good for her child.
I never understood why Rory never called Liam once after the wedding disaster.
I didn't care for Liam when he dumped his girlfriend (who was a beotch) because he wanted to stay with Rory and daughter. He got back with the girlfriend quickly after Rory disappeared and didn't really care for the beotch which makes him a user. His family was rich and miserable. The ending became a soap opera and just a big let down. The first half of the book was fast paced and suspenseful and then it kind of dissolved with a disappointing and somewhat silly ending.
I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
Not my favorite from the authors, but a decent romantic suspense with a somewhat refreshing storyline to keep you interested.
This thriller will have you guessing until the very end! Who you can trust changes rapidly as the story evolves, making it even harder to try and figure out who done it.
This is a great story of lies. Deceit, lust and live, excellently executed by Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush. I look forward to future collaborations by these two.
This could just as well been called the runaway bride because that’s how the book begins. Rory is marrying the man of her dreams with all the trimmings. They are only doing it for the groom’s mother since they have already married civilly. Rory gets attacked by a masked man with a knife and when she gets away from him she hears shots coming from the wedding venue and she flees in fear of her life. Five years later with a 4 year old daughter she finally is found in a different state under an assumed name. There’s a lot of makeup sex which none of us needed to read about in all its details. More lookalike redheads are being thrown off rooftops and they all bear a slight resemblance of Rory. The culprit is discovered after almost killing Rory again and all ends well. It’s a good read for those days when you don’t want to overtax your brain. I will recommend it with 4 stars and thank #NetGalley for letting me read this book in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
One Last Breath – Jackson & Bush
I was fortunate to receive this novel as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
I LOVE when sisters Lisa Jackson & Nancy Bush team up to write a book!
Aurora ‘Rory’ Abernathy & Liam Bastian seemed to be star crossed lovers. Married quietly after a mere month together, Liam’s mother, initially outraged at her son’s choice, now insists on a ‘real’ wedding, fitting of the family’s stature as a premier Portland, Oregon family. As Rory anxiously awaits her step-brother for her walk down the aisle, she’s accosted by a stranger who threatens her and her unborn baby – a baby she’s not yet told anyone about. After getting the upper hand on her would-be murderer, she flees the wedding venue in a panic. Shortly thereafter, gunshots ring out, with multiple people from the wedding injured, including the groom.
Five years later, Rory, living under an assumed name, has raised her child alone, and provides for her best as she can, working as a barista in a coffeehouse. But, lately, she’s had the strange sensation that she’s being followed. Then, while manning the drive-thru, she hears Liam’s voice through the speaker, and sees his image in the camera – and flees for safety with her daughter.
But Liam is not to be denied, and eventually he finds Rory. But as the past comes alive to haunt them as strange things start to happen – vandalism to Bastian construction projects, murder of a former suspect and the murder of a woman who looks suspiciously like Rory…
I enjoy anything these two create, and this latest novel is no exception! Full of twists and turns, and loaded with action, all hurtling to a climax you won’t see coming!! Fabulous read!!
I gave 3 stars Because the story didn't entrap me like other Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush books. It's a romantic suspense story, with not a lot of suspense. By the first couple chapters, I already figured out the villains. There wasn't that many characters to choose from. The story takes place with Rory Abernathy getting ready for her wedding to Liam Bastian. Liam and her are already legally married, but his mother insists on a wedding. Right before she is to walk down the aisle she is attacked. Her attacker threatens her unborn baby as well. Rory fights him off and manages to knock him out. She decides that it is best to disappear and leaves her husband at the alter without explanation. While Liam doesn't realize that she has left, someone has opened fire and shoots at the whole wedding party. Now 5 years have past and Rory and her daughter are living in Washington, but with a different name. She feels like someone is stalking her and gets paranoid and wants to run. But unbeknownst to her, Liam never stopped looking for and hired a private detective to find her. Which he does and Liam goes to Washington to confront her, but she realizes he's there and she runs. While on the run, her daughter gets really sick and she ends up in Liam's hometown and has no other choice to take her daughter to the E.R. That's where Liam finds her, then all hell breaks loose. The police want to interrogate her, on her choice of leaving the wedding, about the shooting. Liam's family never liked her, so they don't want nothing to do with her. There are vandalism and a murder on Liam's job site, and it is imply that it is connected to Rory's return.
There isn't a whole lot of suspense leading towards the end and when the villain is revealed, the end is upon us so quick. Wasn't what I expected.
One Last Breath is a well written suspense. It has a good plot that kept me guessing. There is however a bit to much graphic sex for my liking. If you enjoy good suspense and do not mind all the sex you might enjoy this book.
One Last Breathe pulls readers in but soon puts them to sleep as the story drags on until almost the end of the story than it picks up once again. The problem is getting though the slow parts of the book.
The characters are flat and have very little interest to keep this reader wanting more. Pushing though the story finding that Rory isn't feisty but the female lead you start to hate. Instead of going to the man she "Loves" she runs away to the point it becomes an eye rolling scenes.
One Last Breath isn't much more than a blip on the spring to read pile.
Thank you to Netgalley and Zebra for the advance copy of Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush One Last Breath.
Good read. I loved the setting, since I live in Washington state, it made the book even more fun to read. Story has lots of twist and turns and everyday suspense. Such as when Liam is looking for Rory and she realizes he is coming through the drive up window where she works. It is something that might actually happen in real life. Fun story and a page turner. I always enjoy Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush's writing, whether together or in separate books.
It has ben a long time since I have read a book from either author or a collaborated book. This is because the books were starting to all blend together for me and come off as very similar just with different book covers and character names. Yet, I decided now was the time to start again.
The opening scene was the best. It had tons of action and intensity. It was from here that I got hooked to this book. However, it slowed way down after the opening scene ended. Rory lost some of her strength after surviving the accident on her wedding day but she did gain some of it back as the story progressed. Liam is the type of guy that women would want. He is good looking, determined, rich, and will go to great lengths to protect Rory and their daughter, Charlotte. There is another that kept the story going. This is Detective Mickelson. He is smart and not that far behind from getting his man or woman.
The first half of the story was a bit dry. It never really picked up speed. When it tried to get to a "medium" level it was a lot of stop and go. This was frustrating. The latter half of the story was better but still never truly got to the "high" intensity. Yet, when I did get to the second half, I was kind of over the whole storyline. Overall, this was an ok read.
Can you stop running? Rory & Liam are getting married again even though they had already gotten married in front of a judge. Liam is doing this to please his mother but he knows that it isn't going to be easy as the family is against Rory because of her family history. It isn't her fault that her mother married into a criminal family so she will do this to keep the peace but everything is about to change and their lives will never be the same again. Rory is attacked and she has no choice but to run as someone wants her unborn baby dead and she can't even tell Liam and at the same time as she is running the wedding guests as attacked and many injured. Liam looked and waited for so long for her to come back but there has been silence. He knows that he needs to move on and make an honest woman of his girlfriend Beth but he is still married and so when the PI that he hired to find Rory knows where she is he has no choice but to find her. Rory has changed her name and she just wants to care for her daughter Charlotte safe but know she has seen Liam and she has no choice but to leave again. But nothing goes according to plan, Charlotte becomes really ill and she has to be in the hospital and that is where Liam finds her. What now, Rory knows that she can't run but will Liam believe her about why she ran? But the attacker is still out there and they won't stop until Rory is dead. But who wants her dead and why attack the wedding who was the intended target? No one has ever been able to find out why and now that she is back the danger is closer than they all realize. Will Rory & Liam be able to move on from the past and be a family again? Or will they never be safe? A great read be careful of who you trust. Some families have major secrets and this one is pretty sick I think. I must say that the relationship in the background had me as I really thought that it was the sister but it was a shock when all was revealed. I am glad that in the end some closure was given. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley & the publishing house in exchange for my honest review. Another winner.
Rory Abernathy is a runaway bride—of sorts. Although legally married to Liam Bastian, his mother wants a wedding with pomp-and-circumstance. It is at this ceremony that Rory is attacked and the life of her unborn child is threatened. She flees, and as she does, a gunman opens fire at the wedding. Is it the same assailant?
It is now five years later and she and her daughter are still in hiding. On the one hand, Rory is certain that she is being stalked. Meanwhile, Liam never stopped looking for her. Why does he want to find her so bad? She was the one that left. His motives may just surprise you. Then, just when you think Rory's attacker is finally identified, you realize that there is so much of the story left to be told.
One Last Breath by Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush truly has it all - an excellent plot, great characterization, superb suspense, family secrets, romance and more. What completes this book is a twist that I never saw coming. I look forward to reading much more from these talented authors.
