Please note: I received a copy of THE RULES OF REBELLION from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the Publisher and author.
I LOVED IT! Five stars and here is why:
First off, the sweet and sassy banter between Kylie and Leo set a fast pace for the book. Friends to lovers is a story I absolutely enjoy because there is so much an author can do with it and Amity Hope rocked it! Again! (BTW, I completely devoured THE RULES OF PERSUASION.)
I loved how THE RULES OF REBELLION wasn't just a romance, however, because both Kylie and Leo experienced some family issues that are very relatable today. I work with teens and the pressure to succeed or fit in is so very real. Ms. Hope did a craymazing job with peppering teenage angst with just the right amount of snarky humor to keep me engaged to the very end.
Kylie and Leo's relationship proves that when you take a risk, sometimes fate pays out in spades. These two good friends tackle her rebellion list full on and when they do, boy, do the sparks fly! When they deal with a major family issue that hits them full force, these two teens find solace in their friendship, which turns into a great relationship, and eventually, a true romance. And that makes for a great book. Highly recommend.
I received an e-copy of The Rules of Rebellion from Entangled Teen in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions on this book are entirely my own.
More recently I’ve been reading romance books, I don’t know why but sometimes when I want a light and easy read I turn to these. This is a YA romance book which is told from two POVs; there’s Kylie who lives with her very strict parents, and younger sister; and there’s Leo, part of Kylie’s friendship group (you see where this is going…?)
Anyway as far as protagonists go, this pair were pretty likeable, they both had their moments where I was ready to tear my hair out and was almost screaming at the book but only because I wanted what was best for them. Sometimes they both had overbearing reactions to certain events, but I think I was sometimes one to blow things out of proportion when I was in high school. They’re not particularly outcasts in school, though Kylie is aware of what effect it can have on a person.
It was an enjoyable story that was easy to read, and clear; additionally the author did a really good job in terms of narration – it’s very believable that 17-18 year olds are narrating the story. It was also really great to see how the characters were brought to life, and not just the primary ones. Friends and parents were also given a voice and a 3-dimensional personalities particularly following the climax of the story.
I really liked that other hobbies were also included in this book, it’s something that sometimes gets overlooked; a protagonist will have one hobby and one only but in Kylie’s adventurous new take on life, so many more are discovered. This was a story that was genuine and life-like, which made it easy to relate to characters.
It wasn’t particularly exciting, but it was definitely an easy and light read, so if you’re looking for a nice story, with a relatively happy ending, then this is a book for you. The whole story surrounds a high-school romance but is kind-of contemporary-fiction-y in that it explores some of the problems teens may experience as they’re transitioning from teen to young adult.
Overall I’m awarding this book 4*/5. It was well written, had good character development, and the characters were both likeable and relatable. I would’ve liked a bit more action and drama but overall it was enjoyable. Thank you Entangled Teen for my e-copy and thank you to Amity Hope for a lovely read!
A sweet, easy YA read. This story is a clean read, which seems to be hard to find in this genre. It didn’t enthrall me but it was an enjoyable read. I think most teens who like this genre would enjoy the book. I recommend it for a sweet, light read. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is my first book by this author and I loved her writing style. I was drawn in from the very beginning.
Leo has crushed on Kylie for years, even when he wasn't even on her radar. When Kylie creates a list of things she'd like to do to rebel a little and Leo finds it, he convinces her to let him help. Their connection continues to grow while they are stepping outside their boxes.
This book was light on the drama, which is refreshing for a YA story. This was a cute, fun, easy read that can standalone. I'm definitely adding The Rules of Persuasion to my TBR!!!

Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read and review The Rules of Rebellion by Amity Hope. Kylie gets teased by her younger sister, Allie, because of her complete lack of social fun, so Kylie decides to make a rebellion list of things she can do to expand her high school social experience. Kylie’s rebellion list contains rules also, such as attend a party (without drinking). With Kylie’s list and the help from her friend Leo, the adventures begin. This story turned out to be more complex than I expected and the foreshadowing was subtle and perfect. Kylie’s group of friends are supportive and fun and I enjoyed the prank that Leo planned for her list. Rules of Rebellion is a fun teen romance with the added maturity that makes it a perfect young adult realistic fiction book! Very adorable and worth 5 stars!
Sweet, teen romance. Kylie was more sheltered than I like in a character. Leo was interesting and likable. His hobby was what interested me the most. Both sets of parents seemed truly clueless and extreme. The items on her list didn't seem extreme enough for a rebellion type list. Did like how Leo tried to help her with the list but still protected her from truly getting in trouble. Overall the book was predictable and would have been a 2 star for me but Leo made me give it a 3. I received an ebook at no charge for which I voluntarily provided an honest review.
NB: I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley. Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley as well as the author!
Hey, it's Entangled Crush, so of course I loved it. I may have preferred others, but I still really enjoyed it. The characters were cute and they were so sweet together!
Leo and Kylie really worked together, although Leo (and stupid Mike) were so stupid sometimes!
Overall, I really enjoyed the novel - a huge congratulations to both Entangled and to Amity Hope.
Leo and Kylie stole my heart. Kylie had always been shy and has been more introverted than most people. When her sister makes a comment, she decides to make a list of things she wants to do that are 'normal' senior activities. She never really expected to complete the items, but when Leo reads the list, everything changes.
Leo had liked Kylie add more than a friend for years, but has never been able to tell her. When he reads her !list, he decides to help her, all in the hopes of helping her, but also, being closer to her. During the completion of the list, they both admit how they feel. The only problem, she doesn't know if she can trust him fully; due to something that happened to her sister and changed the entire family. Leo also had a secret. He knows he has to tell her, but is afraid that it will ruin his chances with her.
When the secret is revealed, will their relationship be strong enough to survive? Will he be punished for something he had nothing to do with? Will her parents let him have a chance to prove that he lives her and is a good person? Trust, communication, and paying for something you didn't do are all interwoven throughout this book. I couldn't put it down.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
I really enjoyed this sweet YA read. Kylie and Leo are so cute together and Kylie's list of rebellions is amusing. The only problem I had with this story is the fact that it's a little hard to believe that such a good girl could actually exist. Kylie's a senior in high school who have never been on a date, never gone to a party, never had a boyfriend? College would crush a girl like this. This is the story of what happens when the good girl decides to rebel with the help of her best friend Leo. It's fun, it's sweet, and it's definitely worth the read. I highly recommend it.
When I first saw this up on NetGalley, I immediately jumped up. Because YES, another book by Amity Hope published via Entangled. I love the publisher's books and I really loved The Rules of Persuasion by Amity Hope, that was released in summer 2017. So I was super excited to read another novel by the author. And I wasn't disappointed one bit.
I fell in love with the main characters the second they were introduced. Leo and Kylie were some super sweet people and I enjoyed reading about their journey. Not sure if I liked them as a couple a bit more than the one we read about in The Rules of Persuasion, but they stole my heart just the same, nevertheless. Of course, the idea of a girl making a list with things she still wants to do in her life (or by the end of senior year) is nothing extraordinary. Many YA books revolve around that and it's also always that one boy helping her, that she falls for in the end. But let me tell you that I still didn't get bored of the storyline and that's because Amity Hope is such a wonderful writer. I admire her style, because even though this is just my second book, I would, without a doubt, pick up any book by her. And if it's a young adult novel, even more so. Favorite genre plus one of my favorite writings styles, oh yes, count me in.
Probably, I'm way into deep here and can't really focus on writing a helpful review. Sorry about that. It may help if I tell you that though the idea of the story itself might not excite you, but the characters will. They aren't shallow, there's some real depth behind their actions, behind what they say. I liked that a lot. There's always a certain lightness to young adult novels, and making it so that the story doesn't get too cheesy is the true art of writing to me.
Kylie's and Leo's personalities just matched each other's. Them as friends made sense. Them as a couple made sense. Sometimes, I struggle with these friends-to-lovers stories, but Kylie and Leo never once made me uncomfortable about the idea of them together. I wanted it to happen. I cheered them on. And then... Talk about a plot twist!
Oh my. That plot twist idea was brilliant. Because almost always, the conflict has something to do with the two main characters themselves. And well, this one has got to do with them, as well, but I think Amity Hope created such a creative conflict here and it made me really happy to see there can be something else than cheating or a secret baby or something like that. And when you get to that plot twist, you will understand both point of views - both decisions. My poor heart.
So you see, I'm a fan of this series. It can be read as a standalone, but you'll want to catch up on the first book, too, believe me. I can't recommend the first one and The Rules of Rebellion enough!
I've read a few entangled crush books and they're always a nice light hearted read. Really interested in checking out more of Amity Hope's work after reading this.
If you are looking for a fun, easy read, then look no further. Amity Hope has another set of rules you need to read.
Kylie is feeling a little left our after both her best friends got boyfriends. She decided to come up with a checklist of things to do before she graduates. Leo, who has liked Kylie for years, finds the list and convinces Kylie to let him help her complete it. As items get checked off the list, feelings and secrets begin to come to the surface that could bring Kylie and Leo together or end their friendship for good.
I really liked this book. The only thing that kept me from loving the book was at times I found myself not liking Kylie. I just wanted to go through the pages and give her a clue. Eventually, she would do something that made me like her again, and by the end of the book, I loved her as much as Leo. This will definitely become a staple in my reread pile.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was sent to me to review. However, all opinions are my own.
The Rules of Rebellion follows Kylie, a 17 year old introvert who loves to read. After her sister says that her life is boring, Kylie decides to make a list of rebellious things that she could do. Leo, one of her friends who happens to have a big crush on Kylie, finds the list and suggests helping her with the criteria.
I really loved this book. It was short but sweet. It contained everything that I wanted out of the story. Amity has a great writing style for contemporary fiction and she is also wonderful at creating fleshed out characters who you can easily love. Kylie was an interesting protagonist and I was relieved to find that she wasn’t a stereotypical one. I could relate to wanting to spend time indoors reading but she also wanted to enjoy her last year of high school and Leo helps give her the courage to do just that. The relationship with her sister Allie was an intriguing one, to see the secrets kept between sisters and their different thoughts and emotions, as well as the growing bond with opinions being aired and realisations occurring. We get to see a lot of different relationships in this book; various familial relationships, as well as relationships from male and female point of views. This book is told from two perspectives; Kylie and Leo. It was easy to know which perspective was which, in both dialogue and chapters where you may have otherwise forgotten which perspective they were told from.
I also enjoyed reading about hobbies and careers which I feel is something important but is not always talked about in young adult novels.
Kylie and Leo’s relationship was portrayed well. Leo has had a crush on Kylie for a long time but he was afraid to act on it. Kylie never saw him as more than a friend, until now. It is not instant love but the relationship grows organically as they spend more time together and find out how much they have in common. I found Leo to be a good love interest and I enjoyed reading about their growing relationship from their different perspectives.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It did not take me long to read but it instantly pulled me in and didn’t let me go even after the last page. I had to keep reading to see what happened and that is when I know that I have found a good book. I have nothing negative to say about this book, there is nothing that I thought could be improved upon. I actually want to read more of Amity’s books after this. I am sad that Kylie and Leo’s story is over and I would love to see a sequel. It would also be interesting to read about the relationships of Kylie’s friends and her sister too. There is so much more that Amity could do with these characters and that is a great compliment. If you like contemporary/romance novels or you are just looking to read a nice romance then I would definitely recommend this to you.
Rating: 5/5 stars.
Review will be uploaded on 2nd April in line with blog tour.
This one just didn't grab my attention. I wanted to like it, but Kylie and Leo were just so.....(I hate to say this), boring. It was like vanilla ice cream. Nice, sweet, but plain.
Looking for a great read to start your spring off? Look no further than Amity Hope’s latest #YA #romance, #TheRulesOfRebellion. This book has a great mix of romance and coming of age angst that will draw readers in. Readers will be caught up in the characters and anxiously turning pages to see what happens next. Definitely a great read. Be sure to check it out!
This is a high school romance, featuring the girl who is usually oh so good finally rebelling with the help of the boy who has secretly crushed on her for years! Of course, nothing is simple or straightforward for them! Candy maker extraordinaire, Kylie Jenkins is given a wake up call by her younger sister who informs her she is determined not to live a life as boring as Kylie’s. This gets Kylie starting a list of things she wants to do during her last year at High School….. When Leo Zimmerman finds the dropped list and reads it he decides to offer to help her complete the challenges and so give himself a reason to be with the girl he’s crushed on for years. However, events with their siblings could have a seriously detrimental impact on their budding romance and will definitely influence their parents’ attitudes to the couple!
I was very pleasantly surprised by how this story draws the reader in, bringing the characters to life and making it easy to empathise with them in their times of trouble. I particularly appreciated how the main characters face up to their mistakes and are brave enough to admit to them and apologise. When you learn what happened to Kylie’s older sister it is much easier to understand the protective nature of her parents and I was so impressed with Leo’s maturity in decision making, using his talents despite being denigrated by his Dad and how he tries to put things right for everyone. It is a story filled with little rebellions, lots of love and much more trouble! A great read, I have no hesitation in recommending it to teens and adults who appreciate a well written, fast paced high school saga.
I requested and was lucky enough to be given a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.
That I'm a fan Crush , this who knows me knows, but now I'm becoming a fan of Amity Hope. In Rules of the Persuasion, I cheered a lot for the main couple and found the plot wonderful and different. In Rules of Rebellion, it was no different, she brought characters so real and sweet that makes me want to enter the book and join the story with them.
Leo is an enchanted prince and has had a crush on Kylie since always, since Kylie is interested in James but does not want to leave her comfort zone and approach the guy, her sister tries to make Leo call Kylie for a date, but she didn’t see how much the guy is interested in her. When Leo discovers a way to get closer to Kylie, he does everything to win the girl. I loved the way he went step by step showing the girl how special she was and slowly she did the same for him.
The book brings the characters from the previous book and others that end up making everything more dynamic.
I liked the familiar approach that the writer gave, even though I did not agree a little with the behavior of the parents of both characters, for me two extremes. Anyway ...
I loved the plot, the point of conflict that almost made me enter the book and give a beating on a certain character that I can not speak for being too spoiler.
I loved the cover so very much!!!!
Another great young adult.
The perfect read to just sit and have fun with a romantic book.
Kylie's parents have been overprotective of her ever since her older sister was bullied thanks to a boy to embarrassed to be associated with her and his family who'd covered for him. But now she's bored while her friends go out with their boyfriends and she wants to challenge herself more. When her dare list ends up in the hands of Leo, who's been secretly crushing on her since forever, things finally start to happen. But they don't always go according to plan.
I'd say this was a 3.5 read because, while the author played safe most of the time, it was never one more YA romance you could say from the start what scenes would happen. Also, I liked a lot how things just belonged. The conflict was so subtly inserted I never saw it coming until it did. And Kylie's parents! I spent most of the story sure of how their reaction would be, but I was honestly surprised. The characters were much more real than the ones I'm used to.
So yes, this is another YA, there's no big no bang to amaze you, but it felt so real it was like reading someone's diary.
One last note, I also loved how the story of Kylie's sister developed. I can't spoil much but there was more than one lesson to learn from it, not just some plot device.
Cute romantic read where two kids don't realize how much they like each other until they work together to create a list of things to do before the year is over to get one of them outside her comfort zone. I liked the story but I was not swept away by their romance. I felt like it had good qualities but the hick-up in their relationship was resolved much more quickly than I feel it would have in real life. It has some sweet moments and I know that many of my romance reading students will enjoy this story.
Review: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I like Amity Hope's stories. I've read a few now. The rules of rebellion can definitely be read as a standalone. The rules of persuasion is about the main character's sister but it isn't necessary to read it to enjoy this story.
Kylie is feeling a bit left out. Her best friends all have boyfriends and Kylie wants a little more excitement in her life. She always follows the rules and lives on the safe side of the fence. She makes a list of rebellious acts she would like to try but before she can finish it the list goes missing.
Leo has had a crush on Kylie as long as he can remember but doesn't think he's good enough for her to take the risk of losing their friendship. Kylie doesn't have a clue he feels this way. He is in a similar boat with his friends because they all have girlfriends. His family life isn't working out the way he would like. His family are only supportive of the hobbies they want him to do. Leo is a bit of a pushover. He's super nice. Super sweet and cute as a button. He finds Kylie's list and although it will be embarrassing for both of them, he takes a risk and returns it to her. He has a plan to help her reach her goals. This is Leo's shot at getting some one on one time with Kylie.
This is a sweet romance. Kylie pulls all the strings. Leo shows how great he is and the pair gets on really well. This is Kylie's story of getting everything she wants by taking a risk. 4 stars out of 5.
