This is the first book I’ve read in the series but was still able to enjoy the suspense throughout this exciting book!
Thank you, Paul Doiron, St Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books, & Netgalley for my copy. All opinions are my own.
I wish I would have known this was #9 going in because I normally need to read books in order, and now, I want to go back and read them all. As a deer hunter, I am very intrigued by this series. Very well written. Interesting. Page turner. Give me the entire series, please!
There are certain aspects I can absolutely count when reading a Paul Doiron book: flawlessly executed descriptions of the Maine wilderness, deeper insight into the complicated life of Game Warden Mike Bowditch, and a kickass mystery that keeps me guessing throughout. Stay Hidden has all of this plus a look into the lives of the people who live on a small, isolated island off of Maine’s coast. Mike Bowditch has no idea what he’s in for when he travels to Macquoit Island to investigate a hunting incident in which a woman is found dead. Not only do the locals not want him there, they do anything in their power to discourage him from solving the case, even to the point of threatening his life.
I highly recommend this to any mystery fans and lovers of nature. Paul Doiron does not disappoint!
Many thanks to Netgalley, Minotaur Books and Paul Doiron for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
Although this is the ninth in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. This was the first book by Paul Doiron that I have read.
The story takes place on an isolated island off the coast of Maine. The best parts of the book are the descriptions of the island, its weather, problems with deer overpopulation, and the effects of long-term isolation on its inhabitants. Unfortunately, the main character does not seem confident enough to take on the task of solving a murder investigation by himself. He is forced into taking the lead by circumstances. I thought the ending was somewhat weak.
Very popular with our library readers. They couldn't wait to read this one and every review was excellent, stellar, a real grabber. Passing the word on to other readers and getting the started on the series was a favorite!
was a gripping thriller that took you to every aspect of trying to figure out what was really going on and what was going to happen next! This was such an amazing book and I can’t wait to see what else is released from this author!
The slow pace of this novel did not hold my attention. I could not get interested in the life of the main character, a detective with the forestry service. He was sent to an dreary island to investigate a shooting death that at first seemed accidental. The odd behavior and lack of cooperation by the islanders causes him to doubt their veracity. It could be that I was just not in the mood for this type story.
This is a quiet mystery with a Erie vibe to it!🌫
An atmospheric book filled with fog and intrigue... this is the ninth book in the Michael Bowditch series, But the first book I have read, can definitely be read as a standalone... Bowditch is a game warden in Maine... I really liked his character and I liked this different approach to a crime thriller....
A woman is killed on a small island off the shore of Maine, mistaken for a white tailed deer while hanging her laundry... initially it looks like a open and shut case, a hunter accidentally shot an author visiting the island, Ariel Winters.... but when the hunter is certain he did not shoot that fatal shot and ballistics prove it... and then when Ariel Winters shows up alive and well, things go a little sideways... Ariel is on the island to write a book about one of its elusive citizens, a former Hollywood insider.... so does this have something to do with the murder, And who is the true victim? Bowditch is on unfamiliar territory dealing with a tightknit community.... not to mention on the foggiest island on the Atlantic coast.... but he is determined and so is Ariel to figure out who was trying to take her life...
The island in this book was a character itself, it added so much atmosphere and a thickness to the story.... no joke I felt the damp and the fog seeping through my Pages.... The island community was fascinating and added another layer to the story! Simply a wonderful crime thriller that makes me want to go back and read the previous books in the series! A mystery that had me guessing until the end, I did not have the foggiest idea who done it! Absolutely recommend!
*** Big thank you to St. Martin’s Press for my copy of this book ***
Mike Bowditch has moved up from game warden to his new role as a Warden Invesitigator. When a death, that may or may not be attributed to a hunting accident, takes the life of a visitor named Ariel Evans, Mike heads to Masqoit, an island in a remote area of Maine. It's his first big case, and one he doesn't want to mess up. One of the best parts of these books are the detailed settings. When they take a look at the crime scene, branches and footprints take on a very important role. Ariel was shot while hanging laundry and while it is deer season, many of the reticent islanders don't bother with things like permits. A big twist arrives on the ferry the next day and Bowditch hunkers down to dig into the island gossip and lore to find the truth about the shooting. Complete with a nearby Hollywood recluse, this was another satisfying mystery in this series.
A good story on the island of Maquoit Maine, somewhat isolated and peopled by generations of residents. They are loyal to each other and suspicious of outsiders. The local authority is at the mercy of the wealthy influencers who want the "accidental shooting" wrapped up quickly
I enjoy suspense and thriller novels that deal with murder or crime investigations. I especially enjoy them if they throw something unusual, new or creative into the mix. My newest obsession is crime thrillers with main characters in park ranger or wildlife officer positions. It's breathing a bit of new life into the genre for me, as straight cop/bad guy stories can get old hat after awhile.
Stay Hidden is the 9th book in the Mike Bowditch series. This is the first book in this series I've read...and I'm glad I did! The main character is a Game Warden in Maine. Fatal hunting accidents aren't that unusual. People get mistaken for deer or other animals all the time. Mike Bowditch even remembers a case of a lady getting shot because a hunter mistook her white gloves for the white tail of a running deer. But this time.....the shooting death of a controversial author.....the death is a bit more than just a hunting accident. The case soon turns into something much more serious....and dangerous.
I loved this book! The story had so many surprises and twists that the suspense was constant. I love the location and the fact that the main investigator is a wildlife officer.
I was able to follow the story just fine even though I haven't read the previous 8 books in this series. But, I could tell that there has been a lot of character and background plot development since the start of the series. Because I enjoyed this book so much, I'm going to backtrack and read the rest of this series. Then portions of this story and the main characters will make more sense. It isn't necessary to have read the other books to enjoy this one, however.
Great book! Lots of action and a wonderfully complex and suspenseful plot! I will definitely read more by this author!
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from St. Martins Press via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
This is the first Mike Bowditch Series book I've read. It is a really, really good book. The premise is unique, or at least I've not run into it before, so it kept me guessing. Now I have to read the first 8.
Wasn't sure about starting in the middle of a series but was given a chance to read this 8th book in theMike Bowditch series so I took it anyway. I was not disappointed in this read at all. The character Mike is at time funny without trying to be. He goes to investigate a murder of a woman that's not really dead. Ariel is alive and wants to know who tried to kill her. Together they set out to find the killer, but will he find them first. Enjoy the read.....
Minotaur Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Stay Hidden. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Newly promoted to the rank of Warden Investigator, Mike Bowditch is thrown into his first case when a woman is shot to death by a deer hunter. On a small island off the coast of Maine, where the deer outnumber the permanent residents, it is not outside of the realm of possibility that the woman was mistaken for a deer. Once Mike is brought up to speed by the local officials, however, his instincts tell him that there is more to the story than meets the eye. When the unexpected happens, will Mike be able to conclude his investigation and find out the truth?
Stay Hidden is part of a series featuring main character Mike Bowditch. Although there is a small thread running throughout the novels that keep readers up to speed with his personal life, the books are more about the cases in which Mike finds himself involved than about his relationships. I mistakenly read Stay Hidden out of order, but I really did not feel like I missed all that much because the author gave what I assume is a recap. Mike's competency to do the job was more in question than it should be, which gave that aspect of the plot an unrealistic bent. Overall, I thought Stay Hidden was a fast paced thriller with a good main character. I would recommend the novel, as well as the series, to readers who enjoy mystery thrillers.
This book is a quiet page turner. I had to keep reading to learn the how and why of this case. This is an intriguing and clever mystery that flows along wonderfully. This is the first Mike Bowditch mystery I've read, but it certainly won't be the last.
I liked this story. This is book 9 in the Mike Bowditch series and I think I missed some of the background in his career and getting to be Warden Investigator for the state of Maine. His first major case since his promotion is investigating a murder on the first day of hunting season on remote Maquoit Island. The locals are not helpful and want him gone as quickly as possible. The action is fast moving and the investigation into the murder is easy to follow. Paul Doiron does a pretty good job of providing info from the previous books but I think I'll read some of them and see if I like the series before I read the next story. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Mike Bowditch was recently promoted to investigator with the Maine Warden Service in the Bangor office. Most of the team are investigating a hunting accident when Mike gets a call about another hunting accident. A young woman was shot in her back yard on a very remote island in Maine. They have a hunter in custody but the hunter denies everything except for finding her.......so what really happened!
Paul Doiron wrote a good book with Stay Hidden. The characters were strong yet flawed. I was glued to my kindle to find out if this shooting was an accident or done in cold blood. One click Stay Hidden if you are looking for a good mystery/thriller! I can not wait to read more from Paul Doiron!
Review: STAY HIDDEN by Paul Doiron
(Mike Bowditch #9)
Newly appointed as a Warden Investigator, Maine Game Warden is assigned to his first hunting death incident, on an isolated Atlantic island. Mike doesn't exactly acquit himself with glory, though in his defense, this is his first investigation and the islanders are both aloof and secretive. A vacationing woman is shot while hanging laundry, supposedly a hunting accident. Danger and revelation abound, but still Mike perseveres to ultimate discovery.
Solid installment to the Mike Bowditch series. In some ways this was a little different than past books, but I liked the more investigative aspects of Mike's job. My biggest complaint is there were so many characters that had such small parts that when it came to the end of book, I was still questioning, "now who is that again?".
Great addition to the series. I look forward to reading more about Mike Bowditch. Doirob paints a vivid picture of the parks and the people who live, use and abuse the area.
