I really enjoyed the book. Loved the story plot and twists. Approachable characters, realistic situations. Some descriptions or story „fillers” were tiny bit too long, but in overall - very good book and I’d read more by the author. Thank you, great job!
This was such a good read. I couldn’t put it down once I’d started.
The characters are really well written and from the beginning you’re drawn in to the story.
The twists were well thought out and completely unexpected. You think you know what’s going on and then you realise that you don’t!
There was a fair bit of repetition, but each time you got another piece of the puzzle.
Definitely recommend this and can’t wait to read more from the author.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC. Here is my honest review.
This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!
What could be worse than waking from a medically-induced coma? Discovering your daughter died in the accident that put you there and that your husband has left. And to cap it off, you have absolutely no memory of the incident that led to such a tragic incident. This is the situation Maggie Allan finds herself in. No daughter. No husband. A missed funeral. No memory.
On a long, slow road to physical recovery, not to mention mental recovery. As she tries to piece her life back together the briefest fragments of that night return to her. She also begins to uncover things. Troubling things. People believe she was responsible for the accident, that she was ultimately responsible for her own daughter’s death. Her troubled past comes back to haunt her and entangles itself within her present and future leading to a trail of broken lives and traumatic histories. But what actually happened on that night?
I found this book to have all of the elements to make an entertaining mystery. There was a story waiting to be told and a mystery to be uncovered. Throw in troubled youth and a strained relationship and the concept is there. Overall, the premise is good, but some elements were tough to enjoy for me. The arrival of a new character seems remarkably coincidental. So much so it became agonisingly clear this character was involved in the mystery. Though the nature of their involvement wasn’t completely clear, all sense of mystery evaporated as there was no doubt that they had more than an incidental role to play.
While this book offered a lot of elements that make for an entertaining mystery, revealed in little tidbits, one element at a time, the obvious introduction of an otherwise inconsequential character really broke my immersion. The first half of the book is solid and pacey, but as it progresses into its second half, it starts to lose me. The ending has elements of predictability, while also managing to feel overboard, and somewhat hard to swallow.
I loved Nuala's first book and luckily this didn't disappoint either. I literally couldn't put the book down and read in two sittings.
Recommended.
I was a huge fan of author Nuala Ellwood’s debut novel My Sister’s Bones so was very excited to read her second book, Day of The Accident.
A fast paced and gripping read that I literally didn't put down.
Nuala Ellwood sets the scene very well in this book, it totally gripped me and i would definitely recommend giving it a read.
There were many instances of characters 'nodding their heads' in this book. Nearly thirty, in fact. To nod: "Lower and raise one's head slightly and briefly." By the 30th instance of this tautology, it was getting really rather tiresome. Had the characters just nodded, I might not have noticed.
Irritation aside, this was a fairly decent psychological thriller up to about eighty per cent. Not long after that point, I was starting to fret. There was quite a number of unanswered questions, and I had to ask myself, how were going to be resolved in only 15-20%? They were, yes, but it in a rush and not frightfully believably.
A shame after such a good start, middle and three-quarters, all of which race along compellingly. It's a story about a woman who wakes up from a coma after a car accident involving her and her daughter only to discover her daughter died, her husband has disappeared and her head is full of questions and fragmented memories.
It's not badly written, characters nodding away like Churchill dogs aside (oh, and the wretched present-tense which really does the book no favours), and it's a plot that certainly has legs…there's intrigue and mystery. But there's an imbalance: some parts are a tad too drawn out at the expense of the ending, which just doesn't gel.
Love how easily the story grips you and keeps you reading from one page in!
Nuala Elwood has a writing style that draws you in and makes it almost impossible to put it down!
I remember the first book I read a book by this author, in fact I had an early copy of it from the publishers.
Never heard of her.
I was astounded by that book so, when I could read this too I got it.
It’s been sat waiting to be read......
Why?
Because, her first book was so good I’d been worried about reading this one incase I get disappointed.
I need not have worried.
Nope, not worried at all because this author can weave a story that entrap you in it’s web.
The entire plot of this left you wondering......what happened? What can’t she remember?
Will it shock me? Will it shock her!
The twists were great.
I listened to it on audio. There was only one voice that annoyed me, but a part from that......I loved it.
It has all the ingredients of what a suspenseful thriller should have.
The task of repopulating the senior library has been an exciting and daunting task aS in a boarding school our aim is to encourage all members of the community to read. Because of this, I have been searching down a wide and diverse range of books to read that will entice a wide cross-section of the school to come in, browse and find books that they love.
Books like this will ensure that the senior students in the school see the library as a diverse, modern and exciting place with books that speak to them and they want to recommend to their friends, classmates, teachers and tutors.
It is an engrossing and exciting read with fully-formed characters and a plot that ensures that it's hard to look away. It is as far from formulaic as it is possible to be and kept me up far too late in order to finish it. I immediately wanted to read all of this writer's other books as I loved their voice and found that it really drew me into the story and made me think about it even when I'd stepped away from this tale.
This is a thought-provoking read which I'm sure will be a popular and well-read addition to our new library; I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to read it and I know that the students are going to absolutely love it too!
A gripping psychological thriller, this kept me reading in to the early hours. I will certainly read more from this author.
This is great for thriller fans! I was tense all the way through and trying to read as quick as possible to find out the truth!
it started well for me but i found it to be unrealistic. Although i finished it and thought it was ok i certainly wouldnt rave about it. First book ive read by the author but wouldnt rush out to purchase more. But over all it was a good thriller with few twists and turns if a little bit unrealistic
Maggie wakes from a coma to find her entire world ripped apart. The police tell her that her beloved daughter Elspeth is dead, she drowned when the car Maggie had been driving plunged into the river. The issue is that Maggie remembers absolutely nothing.
When Maggie pleads to see her husband Sean, there is yet more heartache, the police state that he has disappeared and hasn’t been seen since the day of her daughter's funeral.
For Maggie something doesn’t quite add up, she can’t put her finger on it but eventually it all becomes clear and it definitely was not quite what or how she had been told!
Maggie wakes in a hospital, sore and bruised but has no recollection what has happened. The staff tell her she was in an accident and her daughter Elspeth has died. She cannot remember her life and finds out her husband has left and her daughter has already been buried. When she is released from hospital she has nowhere to go as her house has been sold and she has no idea where her husband is to answer her questions. she still has a feeling that she is issing something so starta journey to find out what really happened and how she has ended up like this. She discovers a sad life, made up with an unwanted pregnancy, a stay in a mental hospital and a vengeful woman. I enjoyed following Maggies journey.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
The Day of the Accident was a great page turner for me. I read this book in a day I loved it. Brilliant.
I will be looking out for more books by Nuala.
I finally got around to reading this book, after seeing some great reviews on amazon and goodreads. The book was well written, I'll say that, but I was a little bit confused with the jumping between time periods. There was no indication that we are going back in time, or jumping to present time. This is only my personal opinion, and doesn't have to influence yours. Regardless, it was really a good read, and I didn't see the ending coming, well done! Recommended.
Maggie wakes up in hospital. She has been in a coma but that's not the worst news. Her daughter, Elspeth, is dead - killed in a car accident in Maggie's care - whilst her husband, Sean, has disappeared. Maggie can't remember exactly what happened but she knows she didn't kill her own daughter. Doesn't she?
I went into this thinking it was probably going to be a fairly generic thriller, but it turned out to be much better than that. The main character was fairly sympathetic, and the twists and turns of the plot kept my attention. I did, however, think that the ending wandered off into more unlikely territory and this spoiled it a little for me. Overall though it was an intriguing thriller that kept my attention.
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Penguin Books (UK), for the opportunity to read an ARC.
