As a mother, I find any book involving the death of a child difficult and often avoid books for that reason. However, I was glad I persevered with this one as it is a really well written tale. I did work out some of the twists and some of the characters choices were a little far fetched, but the book still kept me engaged to the end.

Maggie recovers consciousness after 10 weeks of being in a coma, only to be told that her young daughter, Elspeth, drowned in their car when it slipped into a river. Her husband, Sean, has not been seen since the day after Elspeth's funeral ... and Maggie herself cannot remember a thing about the accident, though she cannot bring herself to believe her daughter is truly dead.

The above forms the basis for the events that follow, as Maggie slowly recovers her health but only flashes of her memory and tries to discover the truth about what happened on that fateful day.

An outstanding thriller with myriad twists and turns that leave you guessing until the very end. The storyline itself is interwoven with letters written by to 'Mummy' from her daughter which catch at the heart with their bravery yet do not detract from the forward movement of the tale itself and Maggie's search for the daughter she believes is still alive. Is she right? Or has Maggie been negligent and caused the death of her own child? You'll be kept guessing until the very end.

I had not read the author's previous work but I found this to be a superb thriller, the characters nuanced and sympathetic, and I would highly recommend this book to all lovers of psychological mysteries and thrillers.

I had never heard of Nuala Ellwood prior to this book but I'm glad I've now discovered her. I'm totally in love with her style of writing.
Day of the Accident is a thriller and Ellwood has achieved what some authors don't and that is getting me totally engaged in the book from the very beginning - so much so that one sitting that's all it took to finish this fabulous book. This is no obvious direction to the book (meaning it's written that well I could not predict what was going to happen next or where it was taking me too)
Read it!!!
Thanks to both NetGalley and Penguin Books UK for giving me an opportunity to read ’Day of the Accident) in exchange for my honest opinion

A fantastic psychological novel that had me hooked from the very start.
The confusion and pain of Maggie was heartbreaking and you really feel for her, therefore I could hardly put the book down.
I look forward to reading more of Nuala Ellwood books.

I have conflicting feelings about this novel. On the one hand, it does intrigue and mystery well; I spent the first 2/3 of the book really intrigued as to what had actually happened on the day Maggie's daughter dies. However, I felt that the story was just a bit too unbelievable and unlikely. I didn't believe that a lot of it would actually happen, and although that doesn't necessarily mean I won't enjoy a book (I don't mind books that make me have to suspend by disbelief), this just didn't wow me.

The plot is entertaining, and I enjoyed the slow reveal as Maggie begins to realise what happened in the lead up to 'that day'. There were parts that surprised me, and I like Nualla Elwood's writing (I loved My Sister's Bones so was really excited to read this). I warmed a lot to Maggie as time went on, and was willing her to discover what had happened. I also really liked one part of the ending where the character I assumed would come out of it all as squeaky clean, didn't quite - which kept that side of things believable (keeping it vague as I don't want to give too much away). I didn't guess the ending but it felt a little too stretched for me.

The Day of the Accident just didn't quite live up to expectations compared to My Sister's Bones - but perhaps I'm at fault for comparing the two books, I'm sure authors hate it when readers always do that...! So I feel that it's still worth a read as it's entertaining and kept me guessing, plus many other reviews have raved about it so I seem to be in the minority here by thinking it was just 'OK'.

I was so absorbed in this book I literally lost all track of time. I was hooked from page 1 the writing easy flows and before you know it your swipe along with this novel so fast. What caught my attention was not just how good the book was, it was also I had literally not put it down once. Hence losing time. I definitely recommend this novel absolutely awesome

The Day Of The Acident is a psychological thriller that I immediately loved from the first few pages and continued to do so throughout the whole book.
Maggie Allan has awoken from a coma that she’s been in for ten weeks, when she awakens she is told that her daughter has drowned in the back seat of her car and her husband hasn’t been seen since her daughters funeral. This follows Maggie’s plight to recover from the accident and also to try and piece together what actually happened that day.
This is one of those books that is so well written you automatically feel for Maggie and really want her to find out what happened that dreadful day and I have to say the journey there was full of twists, turns and revelations and I enjoyed immensely. I did not predict the ending or who was and who wasn’t involved but it pieced together seamlessly leaving me thinking why didn’t I guess what had really happened but really glad I hadn’t.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin Books UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

This is quite a roller coaster of a story. Maggie wakes up from a coma to the terrible news that her daughter has died in a tragic accident. Overwhelmed with grief and the after effects of her own injuries, she tries to remember what happened on the night of the accident. The story takes some twists and turns and the ending is the biggest twist of all. The writing style is fast paced and I couldn't wait to find out what was going on.

I was hooked to this book mainly because I had no idea which way it was going to go. Kept me guessing right to the end. Really well written and I just needed to know what happened on the day of the accident

Very well written and with a fabulous twist that all good thrillers should have. I’d recommend this. 5/5 on goodreads

The plot of this book kept me guessing for quite a long time! Skilfully crafted, delivering a sensitive touch on several issues that arise in modern lives and relationships. One aspect of the plot felt too far fetched to me but other than that this book is a winner.

WOW I was absolutely gripped by this book, ive read a lot of books this year and this is one of my favourites. It starts with Maggie waking from a coma she has been in from 10 weeks and the suspense carries on from there and throughout you are left wondering if Maggie has lost her mind or if something more sinister has happened. Would recommend to all.

This was a gripping read from start to finish and it left me guessing. Maggie wakes up from a coma to find that she has been in an accident in which her 10 year old daughter has died. To make matters worse, her husband Sean has disappeared.

While there are a lot of twists and turns, I did guess the final twist which slightly reduced the reading pleasure, but it's a great read.

A gripping read. I found the main subject of the plot distressing, and felt deeply sorry for Maggie's plight. However as the book unfolded, I did guess most of the twists, hence my slightly lower rating.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for my honest review.

Was instantly drawn in. Read it in a couple days. Maggie is desperate to find out the truth of the accident. Follow Maggie on her heart wrenching journey to remember. I was taken by surprise at the twist. Gripping read, kept me guessing, needed to know what happened.

The Day of the Accident had me hooked from the very beginning. Maggie wakes up from a coma to find that she has been in an accident in which her 10 year old daughter, Elspeth, died. On top of this her husband Sean has disappeared. Just as she thinks life can’t get any worse she discovers that Sean has done some odd things and that her home and property are now gone.

Maggie doesn’t seem to have any friends (which I found somewhat unbelievable) but is assigned some professionals to helps her find somewhere to live, some funds and to start to recuperate after weeks in hospital.

Meanwhile we read a series of letters which are from Maggie’s daughter pleading to be collected by her Mum from the home she’s been out in. These letters get more and more desperate as they go unanswered.

As the book goes on we learn more and more of an incident in Maggie’s younger life that has scarred her but we don’t fully find out about it until the end. Nuala Ellwood’s writing is superb. She reveals layer after layer of what’s happened in the past and in the time leading up to the accident and has the reader completely gripped. I was so engrossed I could hardly put this book down. Great and satisfying ending too. I will definitely be looking out for more books by Nuala Ellwood

I started reading this novel whilst on holiday and stopped and started three of four times. I’ve tried since to read it and again struggled to get into the story and the jump between timelines.

This one is a not for me, but am sure others will love it.

A twisting thriller, very much of the moment. This kept me guessing until the end. A brilliant fast paced novel.

I enjoyed this book.

Lot's of twists that I didn't see coming and I also didn't see the ending coming either.

Really good and quite dark in places.

I would recommend, and will look for more by this author.
