This is the first book I have read by this author and it held me enthralled from beginning to end. Maggie has been in a coma for 10 weeks following a near drowning in thick her daughter died. She can remember nothing of the accident and has no-one to help her as her husband disappeared during her illness. After discharge from hospital she has flashbacks that always seem to fad just as she is reaching for the knowledge she needs. Written partly as Maggie's story and partly in letters from her daughter Ellwood really creates the psychological tension throughout the novel. At the same time she gives nothing away - I had worked out that something was awry with one of the characters but the whole was very neatly wrapped in a blurring of time and place. The solution came as a complete surprise. A very well written narrative and great characters.
What a gripping thriller. The story is set around Maggie and the torment she has to endure to make sense of everything that has been happening. What is going on, what caused the accident and it’s after effects. How did it happen, was she to blame? Surely not!
Everything seems so uncertain and things are happening that Maggie simply cannot explain. Is she going mad, should she be locked away, who can she really trust?
This is a thriller with twists and turns throughout that grip you as you try to unravel the mystery. But, is everything as it seems. What happened the day of the accident, will Maggie ever find out the truth?
Utterly fascinating story, well written and brilliant.
This was a gripping, dark story. Maggie wakes up to a completely different world. Her daughter and husband have both gone. One dead and one disappeared. The fall out of this leads to a bleak tale. Maggie is homeless, penniless and bereft. Where is her husband and why does she think her daughter Elspeth is still alive despite all the evidence pointing to not being. A really good twisty tale with a shocker of an ending.
Really enjoyed this book, loved the characters, soon got involved with them and I found the storyline got me interested from the beginning and really felt sorry for Maggie. The more I read I began to wonder if any of the characters were behind all what was happening to her.
I can recommend this book if you are looking for a great book filled full of suspense and which is an excellent page turner.
I have only four more words to add to this fantastic book - what a brilliant ending.
This book is a real page turner! I couldn't put it down. The beginning was very good, I easily got into the story and wanted to know hat happened next. However, towards the end it started to be a bit too unbelievable or forced and I didn't like the ending very much.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. The Day Of The Accident by Nuala Ellwood is a psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first page. Poor Maggie waking up from her coma and receiving the news that her daughter had died.
This was quite a page turner that I found myself devouring in a couple of sittings! The book is full of twists and turns and kept me guessing.
I loved this book. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down and was desperate to find out what had happened. The writing is fast paced and there’s plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. I’d strongly recommend this one if you like psychological thrillers.
Maggie wakes up in hospital following a car accident to find that she has literally lost everything - her darling daughter, her husband, her home and all of her belongings. She is struggling to deal with her grief following the accident and her ongoing memory loss is adding to this traumatic ordeal..
This novel is a slow burner, unfolding over the various chapters as Maggie's memory returns and she begins to remember snippets of that evening. Why was she parked outside a pub she never liked? Why did she lock her daughter in the car when she never, ever did this? Who is the woman in red?
I didn't find this a compelling read, however, I enjoyed the twists and turns to give the book 4* due to the fact that it wasn't a predictable psychological thriller like some of this genre. This book isn't a happy, go lucky read, but if you stick with it, I think you will enjoy it. Definitely worth a read but not necessarily a page turner.
Moments after she wakes from a coma, Maggie’s world is torn apart. The police tell her that her daughter Elspeth is dead. Drowned when the car Maggie had been driving plunged into the river. Maggie remembers nothing, just the fleeting sense that someone else was there, standing on the river bank.
When Maggie begs to see her husband Sean, they tell her that he has disappeared – he was last seen on the day of her daughter’s funeral.
What really happened that day at the river?
Where is Maggie’s husband?
And why can’t she shake the suspicion that somewhere, somehow, her daughter is still alive?
This is a Deeply Chilling claustrophobic Creepy Thrilling Book that you will find hard to put down, it will send chills down your spine.
Twisty, haunting, and completely heart-wrenching, you won't breathe until you've turned the very last page. Brilliant compulsive with one hell of a twist. Superbly plotted and skilfully written, I can't believe I got through this book so quickly. Everything seems to happen so rapidly, keeping the reader on their toes
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin books UK for an advance copy in return for a fair and honest review
The Day of the Accident revolves around the story of Maggie who awakes from a coma after a terrible accident with little or no memory. Hospital staff tell that her young daughter died as a result of the accident which involved Maggie's own car. She asks to see her husband but is told no-one has seen him since a day or so after the accident. Eventually Maggie is discharged but her life begins to fragment further - her home has been sold and has an occupant already, she has no money, no belongings and her husband has completely disappeared. She still has no memory of 'that night' nor of the weeks/months leading up to then. Due to her confusion and circumstances he authorities get involved and she is moved into a flat and assigned a support worker - all far from the lifestyle she used to have. She, however, is convinced that her daughter is not dead and begins to try and piece together the events of the last few months unleashing a series of events some of which make her think she could be losing her mind or that maybe someone else is trying to. This book had me gripped from the very start, not liking Maggie at times as I thought she may betrying to pass the blame for her actions in the death of her daughter and others holding my breath.. The ending was way off what I thought it would be, I was gripped. and will be looking out for other novels by Nuala Ellwood.
Maggie wakes from a coma and is told that there was a terrible accident and the car that she had been driving rolled into a lake and her daughter Elspeth had drowned. Maggie remembers nothing. Her husband has disappeared, and she is all alone. She desperately wants to remember the day of the accident and to find out what really happened to her daughter and where her husband is.
This is a very good fast paced book. Certainly plenty to keep you on the edge and wanting to read. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers and mysteries you should enjoy reading this one.
Started this book last night and finished it this morning - if I hadn’t been so tired I would have kept reading through the night it was sooo good. I was hooked from a couple of pages in and it was one of those thrillers that did not disappoint!!!
Maggie awakens to find herself in hospital. She finds out she has been in a coma for ten weeks after an accident in which her daughter sadly perished. Not only that but shortly after her daughter’s funeral, her husband Sean disappeared.
Maggie can’t remember anything about the accident but fears she is to blame. Once discharged from hospital she is assigned a carer, Sonia to look after her while she recovers. Maggie then tries her hardest to find out what happened that night.
The book has a few slow releases of information which all build up to give a picture of Maggie and her life. There were a number of times during the book where I thought I knew what was going to happen but I was completely off track!!!
I loved this book and can’t wait to read more by this author. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of the book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
When Maggie Allan wakes from her coma, she learns that her world has fallen apart following a car accident in which her young daughter died, and her husband has disappeared. As she recovers from her injuries she starts getting flash backs and needs to find out the truth of what happened on the day of the accident. The flashbacks then start to mix with memories from further back to when she was just 14 years old and again the pain of her past comes back to haunt her. One day, visiting somebody from her past - the truth of her past and present come together in a climatic conclusion.
To start with the book was very slow and quite repetitive but as the story unfolds and you start to get more of an understanding of Maggie's life the book improves. It is worth persevering
When Maggie awakes from a coma she is given the devastating news that her young daughter Elspeth drowned when Maggie’s car plunged into the river.
She is further distraught to know that her husband Sean has disappeared, last seen on the day of Elspeth’s funeral.
What actually happened that day though and why does Maggie have the feeling that her daughter is still alive?
What a read, I devoured this book in just a couple of sittings, the plot twists and turns and just when I thought I had it all sussed it twists again!
A really enjoyable read by an author new to me and certainly one to look out for.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book in return for a honest review
I loved this book!!! At first I wasn't quite sure what was going on and then as the story unfolded things became clearer... I must admit though that I'd not quite got it all worked out until all was revealed. It really was a gripping read...… and I couldn't put it down.
I don't want to give any spoilers away but what I will say is that you definitely need to read this book when it's released next year.
I was lucky to be given an advance digital copy via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion, and I can honestly say that it was brilliant!!
What would you do if you woke up In hospital with your daughter having died in an accident you can’t remember, and your husband missing?
This page-turner explores what’s happened. What dark secrets are in Maggie’s past and what really happened to her daughter?
I enjoyed it but it’s descent into gothic horror - despite the clever plotting - disappointed me slightly as the bulk of the novel is well-paced and (for a thriller) believable. That’s why I’ve given it four instead of five stars.
Nevertheless I read it in almost one sitting and would recommend it.
Oh poor Maggie,! This story seemed almost too sas to read In places. I could not believe that a lot of things would have happened how they did in the book ( no spoilers so cannot explain further) and I have set my ratings score accordingly. It’s a quick read and would be great for passing time on a long journey.
From the start, this is a compelling and interesting read which will have you guessing at each chapter what will happen next. I also enjoyed that there was a real follow up to the ending several months afterwards.
I read The Day Of the Accident in a couple of days.

This book flows well with some nice twists and turns. It kept me enthralled throughout and I look forward to reading more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Books and the author for the chance to review.
