In Undead Girl Gang, there have been three deaths at Mila's school - all suspected to be suicide. One is Mila's best friend, Riley. The other two are mean girls, Dayton and June. Mila doesn't believe Riley would ever kill herself so she vows to find the truth herself. Mila is Wiccan and she performs a spell to raise Riley from the dead so she can ask her what happened. Inadvertently she also raises Dayton and June. None of them remember what happened. Mila and the girls have 7 days to figure everything out. I loved Mila's snark in this book. I love that Mila wasn't your typical white perfect or white ditzy teen heroine. She is overweight, Mexican and a practicing Wiccan. She's very real, if not a little hard on herself. We feel her very real grief and see her insecurities, but we also see her grow as a person. I also love the growth we see from Dayton and June. The mean girls take a good hard look at themselves and who they were in life. The killer didn't really surprise me by the time I got to the end, but that's ok. It was still a fun read. The scene where Mila tries to take the 3 zombies to Walmart to buy clothes is pretty humorous to me. I would love if they made this book into a movie or TV show.
I enjoyed this book! It was quirky and different. It’s touched on relationships and the people we have around us. I laughed at some of humor. Especially the comparison of Xander’s eye color and Pocahontas song. And the fact that Mila has a dirty mind for your average high schooler. Some of the things in the story were a little random at times, but all in all I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would have
This book was much more fun than I had initially expected. I would definitely recommend to middle grades and up. It would make for a terrific book club book because it has both a fun and creepy factor. Line this up with Grady Hendrix’s Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, just for a younger set.
This was an unexpected gory fun read.
Part murder mystery, part zombie horror.
This had me laughing at parts and tearing up in others.
The premise of the book is great and the author really delivers. Great read. Highly recommended. .
I thought Undead Girl Gang was pretty good. It had lots of witchy magic/wicca stuff here. This was a fun and interesting mystery story. However, I just wasn't a fan of most of the characters and I had a hard time connecting with them.
I have to admit that I picked this book to read because of the cover. I thought it would be cute and a quit read. I wasn't expecting to like it. But I was hooked from the first page.
Mila Flores's bestfriend just died. They are saying that it was suicide the Mila knows Riley and doesn't believe it. She knows Riley would never kill herself. Before Riley's death. There were two other people who commited suicide and everyone's thinking that Riley's is related to that. But Mila doesn't believe it.
She finds a spell book that Riley had ... well because they're witches. In the book she finds a way to bring Riley back to life.
This book was vey clever and I have not read anything like it. I liked how the focus was on friendship. True there was some relationship things happening. Mila has a crush on Riley's brother, but it is not recipricated. But the author doesn't dwell on that, the story is about the friendship between Riley and Mila and the friendships she makes once she's gone, but then comes back again.
Mila's character is very diverse. How often do you find a book where the main character, like Mila, is fat and mexican.
This book is definately a must read. It's dark, but not too dark, and the friendship is wonderful.
Had a hard time following this story or connecting with the characters. At times I felt like the point of the story kept getting lost and I didn’t really enjoy any of the characters.
Wicked, funny and a great mystery! I really wasn’t sure about this one, but after the first few chapters I was hooked. This book is entirely about the journey, dealing with the love and loss of friends, grief, self acceptance and moving forward. I really can’t recommend this, I have since purchased my own copy as well!
I need more. It’s true what they say, this is defying a great cross between Veronica mars and the craft. I had so much fun reading this little sneak peak.
I was approved for the sneak peak of this book, and it was amazing! Honestly, it just peaked my interest in the story!
I wish I had the hole book at the time, because I would definitely finish reading it... unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my hands on the finish copy in time!
Still on my TBR though! =)
Thank you for the excerpt of this book. However, I don't think I will continue :) It's just.. it's not really for me.
**Thank you to NetGalley and Razorbill for the opportunity to read this excerpt before its May 2018 publication date.**
When I requested this from NetGalley I was under the assumption that it was the full novel. It is only an excerpt (this was not NetGalley's fault - I just misread!). However, I read the excerpt and have since read the full novel. For the purpose of this review I will only discuss the excerpt given from NetGalley.
Mila and her best friend Riley consider themselves witches and have been dabbling in witchcraft for a few years before our story begins. When Riley and two other girls from school mysteriously die in the same week, Mila is convinced there is something going on. All three girls' deaths were ruled suicide but Mila knows Riley would never kill herself. The excerpt provided is the first chatper of the novel which takes place at Riley's funeral. The tone and voice of this novel is immediately clear even in this first chapter. Lily Anderson deals with death and friendship in a sarcastic yet sentimental way that hooks you from the very beginning. It's clear that Mila is equal parts heartbroken and hellbent on finding out the truth about her best friend. It's a great setup for a novel and had me interested from the first sentence.
Awesome Halloween read It got me in the Halloween spirit with its Wiccan ceremonies, raising people from the dead, and deaths under suspicious circumstances. But I think this would be a good read no matter what time of the year. The heavy topics of grief and teen suicide/death is paired with the narrator’s wit and sarcasm beautifully, making this a fast read but thought-provoking. I ended up liking characters at the end that I originally disliked and enjoyed the friendships formed throughout the book.
A darkly, humorous, YA novel that enters into the supernatural with such aplomb. Fun story, great writing, readers will be anxious to read more from this writer.
A good start to the book. Our heroine is angry. Very angry because her best friend is dead and everyone says she killed herself. Our heroine knows better and will use magic to prove it.
It kinda reminds of I-Zombie, which I really like! When raising someone from the dead gets extras along with them, sure it's common and stereotypical, but still kinda fun. Things are the way they are for a reason, and un-dead had major drawbacks.
My copy came from Net Galley. My thoughts and opinions are my own. This review is left of my own free volition.
I have yet to read anything by Lily Anderson, so when this sneak peek became available I decide this would be a first. Undead Girl Gang honestly surprised me, I didn’t know what to expect but it wasn’t this. I loved Mila, I like her no bs attitude and honestly she was just such an entertaining character that had me laughing at a couple of moments. I’m looking forward to picking up Undead Girl Gang and reading the full book to see how this ends.
This sample got me really excited for the book! Thank you to the publisher for providing it, I will not defintiively go and buy the hardback and when finished reading it provide reviews on all my various platforms!
I received a free sampler of Undead Girl Gang via Netgalley and, since it intrigued me, I proceeded to read the full book and it was a very enjoyable read! Let's get one thing straight: this book doesn't take itself too seriously, it's kind of trashy and it knows it. It reminded me a lot of Scream Queens (I didn't care much for the second season, but the first one was pure gold) with a bit of Mean Girls sprinkled in for good measure. Some parts of it were incoherent, the adult characters were basically non-existent and there were a couple of distasteful (imho at least) jokes, but as for the rest it made me giggle multiple times and it had some spot-on social commentary and representation - the main character is a fat Mexican Wiccan girl with a very strong personality, I liked her snark a lot because she didn't fit the "dumb horror protagonist" trope! Overall, this isn't the Next Great American Novel, but if you're searching for a light, witchy read then look no further! 3.25/5🌟
