This sneak peek has been amazing. I was traumatized to get to the end of the sample--I have not wanted a preview book IMMEDIATELY before. I will be waiting very impatiently until May 8.
ARC/Sneakpeek/YA: Noooooo. This is only a sneakpeek of the whole book. It's about an hour or so of reading. It is pretty good so far and done in first person, which is my favorite.
I like the narrator. She is a teen (and I didn't read enough to remember her name) and she acts her age. She is selfish. Her best friend's death has been ruled a suicide and she just knows it was a murder. Why? Because she is still in the first stage of grief: denial. So instead of moving to the next stage, she is going to get her Willow on (thats a Buffy reference) and resurrect her BFF for six days so, I guess, they can Scooby it out. I like that the whole Wicca spell is not glossed over or made to easy.
I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read this (part of a book because I am selfish too) in lieu of an honest review.
I was given a sneak peak of Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson. Camila, Mila, has just lost her best friend to suicide. Or so everyone is saying but Mila thinks otherwise. Mila thinks that it is way too much of a coincidence that Riley has died and not even a week before two other girls have “committed suicide”.
Mila is going to try her hardes to use her Wiccan/Witch abilities to bring back Riley and well she does and then some more.
I really liked the first 5 chapters. Mila is definetly someone I felt was very real with her emotions and feelings. She is such a devoted friend and although I didn’t get to the part where she works her magic to bring Riley back, I can’t wait to read more! There are already some suspicious characters that I’m pointing fingers at and can’t wait to see if I’m right!!! This book comes out May 8th and I will be purchasing it!!
Trigger Warnings: Corpse,
mentions slut shaming, murder, blood, suicide
First I want to acknowledge how gorgeous that cover looks. Before I even read the synopsis, I was drawn to the cover design. When I read the synopsis I felt like that heart-eyed emoji because who wouldn’t want to read about empowering girl groups, witch craft, and investigating murders?
When I read the sneak peek, Mila’s point of view and thoughts were instantly entertaining, honest and relatable. The character itself warms my heart because YA protagonists hardly have a Mexican Fat Rep. (I’m Mexican and Thick so that makes me really happy to see myself). Her description of grief is also well written and incredibly accurate which entranced me even more.
The novel starts with a Funeral scene of her friend, Riley with the whole school— Fairmount Academy attending. Plus her crush on Riley’s brother doesn’t help her to grieve without her mind getting sidetracked by thinking of him. (Lori’s Thoughts: Possible book boyfriend? Maybeeee. Those Blue eyes and Brown hair. Umm... YES).
By the end of the reading the sneak peek I wanted more! I’m addicted and wish I had the book in my hands already ahh!
*Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for providing this addicting sneak peek!*
A big thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group for the sneak peek. It was not the complete story. First time reading this author. I enjoyed the sneak peek. There were several parts that I didn't understand regarding her classmates. It was like this was the second book and I felt I should know what was happening and didn't. It is a little sad and depressing but hopefully has a better ending. Overall an interesting premise. I would suggest this book to teenage girls.
Undead Girl Gang caught my attention immediately, because of the title. I just had to know who those girls were, and what wicked deeds they would be doing. Plus, I LOVE witches, so that double-cemented my need to read this book.
I can’t wait until this book is published, so I can read it in its entirety! From this sneak peak, I can tell that it’s a quick, addicting read, chock-full of girl power, and lots and lots of humor.
I was roped in right away. With this sneak preview I didn’t want it to end. Looking forward to the rest of the book.
This was an intriguing and interesting sneak peek! I can not wait to read the book! and the title is so Pretty <3
Undead Girl Gang is fun and light imagining what if. Teh man character is loyal and witty and I admire her desire to find out what happened to her friend.I love teh pop culture reference as well; they were fun and brought teh story into my world.
I would love to read the whole peak after reading this sneak peak.
I got a preview of the first 6 chapters of this book from NetGalley and let me say, I immediately went and ordered this book after reading the preview.
Mila is a fun, sarcastic character who is Mexican, over-weight, and a witch. Basically me in high school but with Latin roots (I'm pale as crap despite a Native American grandmother).
The opening of this book is SO GOOD. The setting, a funeral for Mila's best friend Riley. Everyone in town thinks she committed suicide but Mila is CONVINCED she was murdered. So now we've got Wicca, AND a murder mystery? Oh. I am so in to this thing.
I'm enjoying the writing style and the set up so far. I wish I had the full thing to read! I will update this review when the book is released and I have read it in its entirety.
This was a great preview! I really think I'll enjoy this book--intriguiging and fun so far--and add a hardcover (beautiful, by the way) to my shelf. Can't wait to read the rest!
I genuinely loved this sneak peek of Undead Girl Gang!
It follows Mila after the death of her of her best friend Riley (Also following the deaths of two other girls at her school) and due to her feeling more alone and different (being plus-size and Mexican) she decides to raise Riley from the dead.
I love the pacing so far. I sped through it super easily. I love the premise and the variety of characters - especially since most of them are strange/mean/shady enough to possibly provide conflict later on. It was nice to see a supernatural (without vampires) YA book - because they're sort of my weakness now and I think I need a copy of this beautiful copy ASAP!
From the sneak peek it seems to be a dark, humorous read. Mila, I haven't decided on her yet. She is a bit extreme negative wise for me. I do like Toby and looking forward to some more Xander. I would definitely love to read the full version of this one.
I’m so glad I got the sneak peek for this title. I’ve had it on my TBR for quite awhile. I really enjoyed The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You, by the same author, and the premise sounded intriguing, so I figured I’d love this one. Now I’m not so sure I’m going to pick it up. While the premise is still intriguing, it’s a little darker than I expected. There’s a lot of focus on actual Wicca/“magic” that I’m just not really interested in at all. It made it hard for me to take the characters seriously.. I expected more fantasy/magical realism than actual Wicca/black magic type stuff. The topic of a best friend’s death is, of course, heavy. But with the kitschy jean jacket and pin on the cover and the humorous zombie girl gang take I was expecting something kinda silly and fun but still interesting. Along the lines of iZombie and Riverdale. Cheesy but in the best way. This had a different vibe to it and I wasn’t quite sure how to take it.
I’m not ruling it out entirely, but I won’t be pre-ordering it. I would still recommend it to the right reader. I did find the writing style engaging enough to pull me along even once the plot seemed to be taking a turn I wasn’t really into.
While this is just a sneak peek of the full book, I was very intrigued!
First, the premise of this book is outstanding - I'd read it just based on the flap copy.
But the voice in these first chapters is also outstanding. Mila has a strong personality, even as she's grieving her friends. And I can't wait to see what happens when the story really takes off!
This is only a sneak peak, but it looks like fun. Strong lead character, interesting Wiccan angle, and well paced.
This is going to be a great book. Can't wait for the full version.
The characters are interesting and the plot seems mesmerizingly deviant.
This was such an interesting opening! I was absolutely totally invested in the story and I now have to know more! I do wish the excerpt had included the part about Riley actually coming back because I do want to know how that goes. Can't wait to read the rest!
Oh my gosh! I've never read anything like this before. It's only been six chapters but i'm already so hooked and so attached to Mila. I love how much she loves Riley and how she acts on it. I can't wait to hopefully get the chance to read the whole novel. The topic of the novel isn't exactly considered as light but Mila's narration made it so much easier to follow. Lily's writing is fantastic and gets you hooked immediately. If you love witchcraft you're going to love this! And if you don't or simply aren't too familiar with the subject (I know I wasn't), give it a shot!
Wow! This sneak peek was awesome, and I'm already hooked! Mila is a breath of fresh air in the YA genre. She speaks her mind, and she stands up for what she thinks is right. I can't wait to read on, and see where this book goes.
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this sneak peek from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
