There's a loads of step by step methods to help you learn how to cast on and cast off. It's a good book to have in your crafting collection.

This is a nice compilation of cast-ons and bind-offs for newer knitters. However, I don't see this book every outselling free resources on the internet complete with videos which walk knitters through the steps of various sticthes.
