Amazing concept for an interactive puzzle/story/comic that will be a huge hit with kids! Great gift idea.
Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my feedback.
The artwork in this book are absolutely stunning. The colors are bright and gorgeous and it's very fun and bubbly and just made me smile. The story itself was pretty good, but not as great as the artwork. I can't wait to read more.
'Hocus & Pocus: The Legend of Grimm's Woods' by Manuro with illustrations by Gorobei is a graphic novel version of a choose your own adventure type book.
You can choose to either follow Hocus or Pocus as they investigate a cottage. There is a stat sheet to track your adventure, as well as the pet you choose and any treasure you find. The story features elements of famous fairy tales like Hansel & Gretel and Red Riding Hood.
This was a bit difficult to read in review copy form, but I think a physical copy would be a ton of fun for young readers. I followed Hocus as he went around the cottage and got chased by scary trees. There are some good branches to the story and puzzles the reader has to solve to move on to the right page. The illustrations are a lot of fun and there seem to be tons of choices. I especially liked how some choices were drawn right in to the story.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quirk Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
An interesting fantasy plot with wonderfully gorgeous artwork. I really enjoy stories like these and look forward to reading more from this graphic artist!
A choose your own adventure graphic novel that follows brother and sister duo, Hocus and Pocus on their journey to find two missing children, Jack and Jill.
This is a super unique and fun reading experience! You can choose to play as Hocus or Pocus as well as pick your animal companion for the journey. The graphics are very colourful and fun to look at and I think they'll really catch a middle-grader's eye. There are multiple different pathways you can choose from but the ending will always be the same. It's a book you can "play" multiple times before exhausting all the options.
The only complaint I have is that I read this on e-book format, which made the flipping to different panels difficult. That being said, there should be no problem with a physical copy of the book.
This middle grade graphic novel was exciting and original. I loved that I could pick my own storyline. The characters of Hocus & Pocus were fun and cute. The different take on the classic fairy tales took me back to my childhood. Definitely a quick and fun read for all ages.
I loved this book! I thought it was really cool to have so many elements that can give you a different story! I loved those types of books when I was younger and I am so happy that the young kids will be able to do this as well! The only reason I couldnt give it 5 stars is because sometimes it was hard to keep up with. They have those easy pages in the front but I dont like writing on my book. But the artistry was amazing, the characters were adorable and easy to like!
Maybe it would translate better in physical form, but the "choose your own adventure" aspect of this book did not work well. The overall story was cute and I could see kids loving the story. My only complaint is that in ebook form, I'm not sure how well kids would be able to follow along.
I loved this book! It is so unique that it is a "choose your own adventure" type graphic novel, except it takes it to the next level with the gaming sheet to keep track of your animal companions, collected items, star count, etc. I "played" it three times in quick succession - all three times as Pocus, once with the boxobullfrog and twice with the trampoturtle, and got various results (once I somehow managed to miss all the side quests and it even got so bad I lost all my food in a run through the forest so I only scored a 4!) I still have to go through as Hocus and use the whirlybird and I can't wait! I loved the plot, and the plot twists, and the adorable illustrations, and the creativity with all the animals; I just had so much fun reading this. I can't wait for the next one!!
I did not enjoy this version of the book and found it difficult to follow. I also had my 9 year old look over it in the event I just was not in the frame of mind to read it. He did not enjoy the story. Did not finish.
I recieved this book as part of Quirksgiving reward. I really enjoyed the story and the chose your own adventure. The graphics are cute and I would pick up the next one. Thank you for the opportunity to read.
Just the right amount of perfect illustrations, action packed story line, and plenty of proof the author really wrote this for kids to enjoy. Excellent book.
Very fun and interesting take on the Choose Your Own Adventure style of book. For my first time through, I chose to be Pocus with the Whirlybird. The graphic novel format will keep kids entertained for multiple trips through the book, and the Pokemon vibe will encourage them to try new pets and/or find other readers and share different journeys at the same time. I would highly recommend this book for reluctant readers.
Thank you NetGalley and Quirk Books for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy.
Somewhere between Choose Your Own Adventure and a Roll Playing Game, this is a fantastic concept! We loved it! It's fun for the kids to do either cooperatively or on their own. I just printed a screen shot of the character sheet for the kids to use. Definitely going to be searching out more of these.
This book is a lot of fun, and I would recommend this for anyone that enjoys “choose your own adventure” books, role playing games, or video games. The art was wonderful too. It was difficult to navigate to the different pages while reading from a PDF, so a physical book is recommended.
This is a “choose your own adventure” graphic novel. At the beginning you pick which character you want to be. You can be either Hocus the girl, or Pocus the boy. You also get to choose a magical creature. I picked Hocus as my character on the story and my magical creature was Trampoturtle. This was a lot for me to take in, but I think for a middle grade reader, this would be a lot of fun to make choices as you go through the story. The graphics are colorful and I liked the characters.
Thank you to Quirk Books and NetGalley for this e-copy in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
Absolutely adorable graphic novel version of those "choose your own adventure"-stories! Loved the cute artwork and enjoyed playing through the story - although it would have been a lot easier to do so with a physical copy of the book. Still, a great idea which was very well done. Would totally recommend this!
The nostalgic Choose Your Own Adventure style books is reintroduced in a more visually accessible format of graphic novels for audiences both new and old in Manuro Gorobei's Hocus & Pocus: The Legend of Grimm's Woods.
In a world filled with familiar fairy tale stories, characters, and creatures that take on some new characteristics, readers are able to choose the character they'd like to follow and make choices for them to create a unique story. Reading and playing as either Hocus or Pocus, with the assistance of a magical animal companion, the story unfolds as readers solve the riddles presented to either help their character succeed or fail as their adventure evolves.
The art is adorable, the flexibility of the choices offered allow for a different experience with numerous reading opportunities, and the interactive element of the story is enjoyable and certainly evokes a strong sense of nostalgia for older readers who grew up with the Choose Your Own Adventure books; however, this type of story does not lend itself well to a digital format that isn't hyperlinked. The experience with the ebook version of this graphic novel was frustrating as choices required searching for the correct panel and constantly moving back and forth throughout the story - this would be far easier, and likely more enjoyable, with a physical copy of the book that's easier to flip through.
Overall, I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Quirk Books as part of the Quirksgiving Challenge.
Just looking at the cover of this graphic novel makes me giddy. Hocus & Pocus (and their side kicks) are just adorable. This is a choose your own adventure GN in the Middle Grade genre. At first glance, the art is fantastic. It's drawn in a very cartoon-y, impish design and it's delightful. It fits well with the witch and warlock theme of the novel.
As we open the book, we dive into a new world- full of magical creatures, witches, magic, and mayhem. The MC are Hocus & Pocus (though I'm still not sure who is who....). They are a brother and sister duo, top of their class and are working to become masters, which means magical creature care takers or something akin, and they have been tasked with a QUEST! Of course, the quest is to find a pair of lost children, somewhere out in the scary GRIMM WOODS! You have to pick one of these characters and follow them...er...guide them?.. on their quest.
The idea is fantastic. The art is phenomenal, I was STOKED. But that's where the excitement ended. Now, to be completely fair, I did have a eGalley - a physical copy of the book would have been MUCH easier I am sure.
The entire premise of the GN is that you decide what happens, so through out the novel you have to flip to new pages, find different items and follow mazes and quests to achieve your goal in the story. With an eCopy, it was almost impossible to find the right panels, to match up the symbols and to keep track of the story in general. I am fairly confident though, that a physical copy would be much easier and such fun! The story (what I could follow of it) was cute and well done but there was just not enough cohesiveness to the eCopy to really get a good grasp of it.
The duo is hilarious, and their antics would entertain anyone. I loved that they dealt with Magical Creatures buuuuut we didn't really see them much outside of the small tasks you are guided to do. Still, I got to tote around a magical pet, so that was alright by me!
Over all, I enjoyed it despite the issues I encountered. If you are going to purchase this for someone, definitely get the physical copy (but maybe the actual kindle/ebook will be automated to jump -- who knows). I dub this GN a solid 3.75 stars (rounded up to 4 stars).

This is such a fun book and great way to encourage children often who may not enjoy reading as much to get into books, bright colourful and cheerful characters, interactive and play your own story out, I don't know many children that won't live this even if hesitant to read. six stars if I could for such a great way for young minds to come to reading
