This book was a great read. In every story a detail could be found that a person can relate to. There are some stories where the only thing some readers may have in common is the human experience. It highlights moments which have a profound impact on the storyteller, moments which the reader may never experience. Some are moments which a reader may never even imagine could happen in real life.
It's an eye opening collection, one which shows how life can make us stronger, even when we feel at our weakest.
I'm a new listener of the RISK! podcast and requested an advanced reading copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoy hearing people's stories, especially those of life-changing and defining moments. This book kept me engaged the entire time because of the variety of stories - stories that make you question humanity, stories that make you cry tears of joy, and stories that make you laugh out loud. I was familiar with some of the storytellers (Aisha Tyler, Michael Ian Black, Paul F. Thompkins), but many were new to me - and I cannot wait to check out their other content. The chapters were fairly short and perfect for when I only had a few minutes at a time to read.
I hate small talk-- "how is the weather?", "how about that team?", and "I am doing just fine". Risk! is a collection of stories that are the opposite of small talk. These are deeper stories of life that you won't hear at a cocktail party but that each author had the bravery to not only write down, but also told at live Risk! shows or on the Risk! podcast. The stories are diverse and no-holds barred. I did cringe a little when the story was more soul-baring of a family member or someone else than of the person telling it. I did find myself wondering if hearing the person telling the story would have more of an impact. Luckily, there is a podcast for that. The Risk! stories are good for when you want to pick up a book and get a little dose of humanity in story-sized bites.
When I started reading this book, I had no idea what these stories were about. I started reading and found out that these stories were from the lives of individuals with enough courage to open their souls and reveal their deepest secrets..Things said that had to cut like a knife with every word. I don't know if I could have done this.. I felt like I was sitting in a car in New York listening to Uncle Louie, a man barely known, laying his soul out there to be seen. In Another Saturday Night I cried thru the pain and although told with humor, there's nothing funny about it. It is a reality that should never happen. Pain but hope. This book sometimes has parts that are hard to read, but take the time to finish. It is well worth it They all survived. We all have stories. It made me wonder what story I would tell if I were to take the Risk. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and I'm honored that I was able to read it.
