When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger is a book that is worthy of your summer beach bag this year. This third instalment in The Devil Wears Prada series will have you laughing out loud. The characters are charming and interesting in this story that is all about sisterhood.
I was so very excited to revisit the world of Andrea and see how her relationship with Emily had developed. As with all Lauren Weisbergers books however the plot can be easily summed up as *lucky, attractive girl suffers an inconvenience, quits, lives happily ever after* still giving it 4/5 stars as I enjoyed the journey but wish her characters were slightly more developed and the author mixed up the plot just a little bit.
This book works well as both a standalone and a continuation of the Devil Wears Prada series. Going into it expecting another DWP wouldn't be fair to this book, which, interestingly enough, touches on the importance of female friendship, perhaps in sharp opposition to DWP. The most from the city to the suburbs is as disconcerting in the pages of this book as it is in real life, giving a layer of nuance that most readers who probably don't have the wealth of the characters amidst its pages, will still related to.
This was such a fun continuation of the "Devil Wears Prada" story, and I truly enjoyed every page of it. This book reminded me how much I love Lauren Weisberger. She never fails to make me laugh, cry and then laugh again all within a single chapter. Emily's character was especially good for a laugh.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me a digital copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
If you're a fan of The Devil's Wear Prada, this book's for you. This brings back a character from that book, Emily Charlton, and the result is a fun, beach read about the suburbs with a lot of heart.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was light, snarky fun, and while it's not the type of book I usually read, I was drawn to it because I really enjoyed the movie version of The Devil Wears Prada. I appreciate that while this book is a continuation of a character's story, it can be read as a stand-alone- which I did.
This novel is exactly what I thought it would be, fun, lighthearted, filled to the brim with over the top suburban characters. If you're looking for something to read on the beach, or on an airplane, this is a solid choice.
I loved this book so much. I have never read a book by Lauren Weisberger but I am familiar with the Devil Wears Prada, and this book was a fantastic addition to the series.
Lead character Emily Charlton is such a hilarious protagonist and with her quick wit and snarky comments you cannot help but fall in love her with her. We are introduced to two new characters, Miriam and Karolina, and the three women’s lives become intertwined as they support and rally for each other while navigating the drama of suburbia. The story is told in alternating perspectives by each of the women which allows for excellent character development and relatability.
I highly recommend this book and hope that this series continues forward to a fourth book.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy.
I was wary going into this one as I have not read any of the other books in the Prada series although I did see the movie. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could read this easily as a standalone novel. It is a hilarious observation of motherhood, the suburbs, friendship, and how women come together in a crisis starring the incredibly sassy Emily Charlton. At first, I could not imagine her in a setting other than as Miranda Priestly's arrogant assistant at first but I could easily see her in the suburbs in this book. It is hilariously tongue in cheek and laugh out loud funny.
A very popular book in our library collection, where are readers are giving it a combined score of 4 out of 5 stars. Check it out.
If you are looking for a nice fast vacation read flipping the pages, look no further.
But as long as we are honest - I didn't like it.
I was expecting something along the lines and style of Devil Wears Prada and it's nothing close to it.
It felt dragging probably because it was lacking plot and action.
Miranda was obviously the highlight of "Devil..." and what made it so great, so this one significantly lacks substance.
I really enjoyed this book, though I have to admit that I heard Emily Blunt's voice as the narrator! Fans of The Devil Wears Prada will definitely want to keep up with these characters.
The book opens as Emily Charlton is on her way to save a client from publicly committing suicide, she flies across the country to save what’s left of the star’s reputation after an incredibly stupid stunt in a club. After the crisis is under control, Emily is told her services are no longer needed and she’s replaced by a younger, apparently hipper rival.
Feeling defeated, she talks with her friend Miriam Kagan who alerts her to a catastrophe in the making. Karolina Hartwell, second wife to a sitting Senator and Presidential hopeful, has been crucified in the press and is hiding out. Karolina was a famous supermodel before she married and took over raising the senator’s son and becoming the perfect politician’s wife, mother and home. Well, it seems she’s reached her best before date and the senator has apparently moved on to the sitting President’s daughter whose connections can help him into the oval office. Not to appear the bad guy he’s engineered Karoline’s fall from grace by ensuring a harmless drive with his son and friends becomes a public affair with Karoline charged with impaired driving, endangering youth and the lot. Karoline is humiliated but she’s not down. She’s innocent and hires Emily to help her get her reputation and life back. Not the husband, that horse has left the stable. We meet some of the wives of the Connecticut bunch, well-off, influential and totally irrelevant, spending their time trying to spend their money and obsessed with cosmetic surgery on every conceivable part. Interesting, I haven’t heard of most of this stuff, but shallow and stupid nonetheless.
Absolutely a fun read, hopefully it’s fiction because I don’t like to think that it’s possible for brains to be quite that empty.
I loved reading Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada and I loved the movie even more. I did! But I did not know there was a series. And then I found When Life Gives You Lululemons. Book 3 in The Devil Wears Prada series. So.
Obviously I read it. And although I missed book 2 (Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns) I more or less kept up with the story, even if I couldn't keep the characters straight.
This one is from the perspective of Emily, the snooty assistant from the first book. Love her. This book didn't really go in the same direction and I didn't relate to any of the characters but I thought it was fun and a good summer read.
When I was approved to read this book, I was absolutely ecstatic. This seemed like the perfect summer read: funny, chick literature, and with characters from one of my favourite books, The Devil Wears Prada. I cracked open this book in June, read one page, and then froze. What do you mean, this is volume 3? Have I read the second book? A quick look at my Goodreads revealed that no, I hadn't, and so I put this book down in order to read the second one.
Well, summer is summer, and next thing I knew, we were mid-August. I didn't want to wait until fall to read this book, so I decided to skip Book 2. I don't feel like I missed any joke or any reference, so if you have read The Devil Wears Prada but not Revenge Wears Prada, it's okay, I promise. I do, however, recommend reading the first book, because you will miss out on some of the references.
Back to the book itself: it was funny, it was witty, it was glamourous, and it was both so relatable (who hasn't eaten a doughnut after a workout or felt supremely uncomfortable in a girl group gathering?) and yet so unrelatable (who can really afford a thousand dollar purse?), but that's what makes this universe so lovable, isn't it?
The new characters are endearing and the story line kept me captivated from the beginning to the end. It didn't make my stomach clench like the first book did, but at times, I went to bed past my bedtime because I jut had to read one more chapter.
I'd like to thank Simon & Schuster Canada, as well as Netgalley, for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I recommend that you pick it up before summer escapes us once and for all until 2019!
My first read by Lauren Weisberger, it will not be my last. This story was chick lit at it's top form, with a little more depth than can usually be found in the genre and an enjoyable read. I'll definitely be checking out more books by this author in the future.
From the first pages, I was hooked. I could not stop laughing. Weisberger has an ability to make a story feel so realistic. I also felt like I was visiting old friends with this one. The characters from The Devil Wears Prada have always held a soft spot for me and Emily was my favourite. Who can resist her snarky personality. I mean, mind you, if she was my friend I would probably spend most of my time crying but I appreciate her blunt personality from afar! And being able to see where she ended up was awesome.
Absolutely read!
This was a light and funny read - the perfect book to take to the beach. I was a huge fan of the Devil Wears Prada and this one did not disappoint. I laughed out loud SEVERAL times during my reading of this one.. I highlyrecommend this one to readers looking for the perfect book to take on vacation.
"When Life Gives You Lululemons" by Lauren Weisberger
Very cute, fun read. Entertaining and relatable characters. Clearly a chick-lit. Great follow-up to Devil Wears Prada. It is a good summer book to lounge around with and just enjoy reading.

Emily Charlton is baccccck and this time, we get to see her view on motherhood and suburbia. Emily's life is at a fork--her career is on the fritz and she doesn't know what her next steps are going to be. I loved the ladies that were brought into this book--Karolina, an ex-Victoria Secret model and wife of a Senator who's been pulled into the middle of a messy political scandal, and the mutual friend, Miriam, a former high-power attorney who traded in the fast-paced NYC lifestyle to create a life for her husband and child in suburbia. Brought together by drama, this book is full of all the ridiculous never-in-my-lifetime dramas that make you laugh and cry. As far-fetched as a lot of it seems, there's a sense of relate-ability. Perhaps I'm just approaching middle-aged complacency... Enjoyable read for anyone looking for some laughs and an easy read (even if you aren't a Devil Wears Prada fan).
Lauren Weisberger's "When Life Gives You Lululemons" will make you laugh out loud, bring you to the brink of tears, and make you cheer for Karolina, Miriam, and Emily. If you haven't read the previous novels in this series, don't fret as it works perfectly as a stand alone title. This follows the story of three friends as they deal with the challenges of suburban life, the judgements of others, and wondering how much sex is the right amount for a married couple? A fast paced novel that keeps you wondering what on earth is going to happen next. Even once its finished you'll be still be wondering what this trio gets up to next, hopefully we'll all find out with another installment in this series.
