I read this a while back and forgot to write the review. I liked the short readings each day from different authors. It was kind of deep and caused me to consider some things I had not considered previously. I would recommend it to some of my more academic friends.
52 reading from a wide range of writers around the central theme of how to live out Jesus' call to be in community. As with any anthology, I related to some excerpts more deeply than others. I would love to read this with others, and discuss the questions that go with the readings. Recommended especially for American Christians seeking to break through our culture of individualism. Review based on an ARC received through NetGalley.
I think this book is so important for what the church is in need of right now! While God has called us to unity, we've become comfortable with division. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that it is broken up in 52 chapters, one for every week. I think this is could be a great resource for church staff to complete at staff meeting or something similar. It is challenging and convicting.
I have really struggled with seeking godly community, in terms of going deeper in my Christian friendships. This book is filled with many, many, pieces of amazing advice by authors who have lived their words. I am truly thankful to have received and read it.
Community is a vital thing; especially in the church.
There is no doubt that there is much talk about 'community', with concepts being presented as models. In fact it is possibly one of the buzz words of our current climate.
I had read some other writings about Dietrich Bonhoeffer and when I noticed that there were some excerpts in this volume I was intrigued.
There are some valuable additions in this work from a variety of writers. I struggled personally with the variety of essays and excerpts and did lose some interest.
The volume is probably best approached by either someone with an interest in the subject or intent on a study of the topic, or by one who is happy to pick it up and down at leisure. The latter was the approach for this reader, and as such is still technically unfinished.
Super collection of works, invaluable in today’s fast paced society. Worth a re-read every so often. And a recommendation to others.
I have enjoyed Called to Community, but it is a hard read. Good stuff, worth gleaning, but perhaps would be best in a class setting or in a small group. There are individual groupings of essays that are filled with helpful information, but it can be too deep a read for one sitting. I think if I had been reading it in a group setting, it would have been better. Lots to sift through, but worth it. Just not a super fast page turner. ;)
