I thought the premise of Copycat sounded great, but unfortunately it was hindered by subpar writing. Addie is a super fan of the series Gap Lake and when the allusive author contacts her to help promote the latest release, she jumps at the chance. However, strange parallels between the book and real life start happening (like the most popular girl at school being murdered), Addie begins to wonder if it's really the author who's sending her these emails.
The dialogue felt forced and overly teen if that makes sense. Like the author was trying too hard to sound like a teenager. I did enjoy the parts written as part of Gap Lake, and there were a few good moments, but overall it was hard to become invested and sucked into the plot because the writing would pull me out.
This book reads exactly like the old Point Horror and Fear Street books I loved so much back in the 90's (still do!)
The main character Addie runs an online blog for her favourite book series and when it starts gaining popularity the author contacts her about doing exclusives for her blog. Then the murders start which are VERY similar to the murders in the Gap Lake series. Is it a copycat killer, the author, somebody Addie knows???
Its a quick fun read and I would definitely pick up more YA thrillers by Hannah Jayne.
This book was so much fun to read! I do love a good young adult book that I can get lost in and this was certainly that. A very quick read with a story that will have you hooked.
A book about a book obsessed teenager called Addison. She is obsessed with the Gap Lake mystery books and has a very popular blog as well. She receives a message from the author inviting her to help with the promotion for the new book she is thrilled. But then the most popular girl in school is found murdered.. and life starts to imitate the books. Is she really talking to the author or is it a murderer? Is she safe?
Filled with teen drama, murder, family and lots lots more I really did enjoy this book and will look out for more by this author. Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the advanced copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions
The premise had me hook, line and sinker, but it didn't quite deliver the suspense-bursting and slightly creepy read I was expecting. Instead, Jayne focused heavily on the two protagonists, such that there was no real knowledge or connection with the other characters on which to base any suspicions. Structure and voice, however, were both handled beautifully to create an easy (if not entirely thrilling or nail-biting) read.

It’s very rare for me to get this excited about a book, but this is one of the rare times. I’m so upset with myself that I didn’t read this sooner. I mean I’ve had this ARC for a quite a while in my shelf but I just never got to reading it. And I’m very glad that I did.
Addison Gaines, a high school student is obsessed with mystery author R.J Rosen so when he reaches out to her to ask her to work on a project with him, she is ecstatic. But when he starts sending her snippets of his new book, and the events start to happen in real life, she begins to question whether this is the really author or himself, or a copycat.
Wow wow and wow! It was just so astounding I couldn’t stop. I’m literally in bed right now writing out this review at 2 a.m in the morning. I just had to finish it!
The concept was very interesting. A fan obsessed with an author. Sounds so simple, yet so complex. I didn’t know how this would work but it did. The thriller aspect is really apparent in the novel and I got chills reading this one.
The characters were so brilliantly written, the plot so enthralling and the novel so fresh! It’s like nothing I’ve read before Andy only stay up really late to finish books that I find to be worth it, and this one was.
Plot twist I did expect but this did not at all take away the enjoyment in reading the novel. It was just so creepy! Jayne writes in such a great fresh new voice and it just creeped me out!
If this is how all Jayne novels are, then I’m an immediate fan! Highly recommend, it’s just great.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am reviewing a copy of Copycat through Sourcebooks Fire and Netgalley:
The Gap Lake mystery series is so popular that everyone is dying to read the latest book in the series. Addison is no exception, she is the novels biggest fan she is thrilled when the famous reclusive author R.J Rosen contacts her, giving her inside information others would kill for!
Addison always imagined what it would be like if The Gap Lake Mystery series was real. When she finds the most popular girl in school dead. Murdered. And she realizes that life imitating fiction is more dangerous than she ever imagined. Soon other terrifying books start to happen around her. Addison has to figure out how to write her own ending...and surviving the story.
I give Copycat five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!

This was a fairly good YA mystery about a teenager who is a fan girl. Addie loves everything that RJ Rosen writes, and has a blog with hundreds of followers who feel the same way. But when a classmate is found dead, art imitates life, and Addie begins to feel creeped out by the personal messages she is getting from Rosen. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my fair and honest review.
I really enjoyed the mystery, intrigue and suspense that this book bought, I literally had no clue, I think I suspected every character at some point during this book and it's not till 4 chapters from the end that you get the big reveal and even then there's an unexpected turn.
I read it in one sitting and when I got to the end I even flicked back through to find some of the subtle clues that I'd missed. The whole plot of this book flowed effortlessly and I think my highlight has to be the girls friendship (Addie and Maya) it was brilliant and uplifting having such a close friendship central to the story and not written as an after thought.
Copy Cat – Hannah Jayne
I was fortunate to receive this novel as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
Addie Gaines is your typical high school student, with one exception. She loves books and is particularly infatuated with the Gap Lake books – a series of young adult mystery/thrillers that have developed quite the cult following. Addie is so entranced, she’s created her own blog about the series, and has written some fan fiction as well, that rivals the authors storytelling. She lives and breathes the series, and her blog has 27,000 followers. She’s also president of author R.J Rosen’s fan club!
Out of the blue, Addie receives a message from the reclusive author himself, praising her devotion to the series and offering her a sneak peak into the newest book, and hinting that there will be surprises along the way. Shortly thereafter, a classmate winds up dead, in a manner straight out of the Gap Lake series. Coincidence? Or is it something much more sinister??
This was quite enjoyable for a young adult novel, and something I will pass on to my daughter to read next! Mild on forensics, but big on teenaged drama with school and boys – with just enough suspense to keep you turning the page. Where were these kinds of books when I was younger??!! A great read for the ‘tween’ and teen who loves mysteries!!
I received an e-galley of Copycat from the publisher via netgalley, that did not skew my review.
2.5/5stars
I liked Copycat for the first half. It was a little clunky and the teenagers didn't talk the way teenagers do, but whatever I mean who cares if a typical teen wouldn't use words like ingenue. I could live with that. But I guessed the killer pretty early on in the book. And the motive didn't really make sense to me. I mean it's a decent quick thriller but it was too predictable for my liking. I'll definitely give the author another try in the future though.
This was my first Hannah Jayne and I'll definitely be reading more. While, i did think it was stronger in the beginning than middle & end, i did enjoy it. I thought it was fun, thrilling, and a bit chilling. I'll be reviewing in Chapter Chatter Pub, closer to release date!
CopyCat had such high hopes but fell flat quickly with the chunky dialog, fell into the Pretty Little lairs type of story but lacked the creative writing needed to pull off the story. The characters were unlikable.
The motivation behind the murderer and reason couldn't have been a bigger let down because most readers will have figured it out right away. Only thing kept me reading was hoping that I was wrong.
The friendship didn't feel read and left me wondering why the author chose this route?
The story is flat, Predictable and boring.
Thank you to netgalley for the advance copy.
I have read some of Hannah Jayne's work before and I have really loved all of the ones that I have encountered before. This one, however, falls a bit short for me. The writing is really good but the plot didn't do it for me.
After a murder takes place in her hometown, Addie begins to make connections from the murder to the books in her favorite murder mystery series. The plot has some twist and turns throughout it as well as some pieces of text taken right out of Addie's favorite books. She begins to receive messages from the author which soon turn spooky and threatening as more bad things happen to the town and people around her.
The characters were kind of a let down for me. All of the adults really treated the teenage characters as if they were children despite the fact that they had some good ideas. It was to the point that while the adults were in the book, they weren't adapted fully. Addie has a lot of personal issues that are briefly touched on that I felt could've been a bigger point as those scenes where she has flashbacks were really interesting and well written! I was sure at one point a certain character had something to do with the murders due to one scene but it was never revisited which surprised me. The ending was a bit predictable definitely have seen some like it before, it felt rushed. I read the entire book but didn't feel as if there was closure to the events that had taken place. I think the characters. I can see where people will get sucked into the mystery of the murder in Addie's town as well as who is the mysterious author. There is good mystery aspects that will draw readers in.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.* As an adult, I am not the intended audience for this novel, but I enjoyed it very much nonetheless. Some reviews have compared it to the 'Pretty Little Liars' series of books and I think this comparison is fair. Those that enjoy PLL (and yes, that is one of my guilty pleasures) will equally enjoy the twists and turns and scares presented by Hannah Jayne in her latests offering, 'Copycat.' The book centres around the world's biggest R. J. Rosen fan, Addison. Addison not only adores the Gap Lake mystery books written R. J. Rosen, she also runs a successful blog on the series. Things start to go awry, however, when life begins to imitate art. A thoroughly enjoyable read. My only criticism was that the ending felt a little rushed and could have been drawn out a little bit more. I look forward to Jayne's next book.
This book was a bit of a slow burn for me, it took a while to really get the story going but was very intriguing once it got there. It was mysterious with a nice ending twist but not a favorite of mine.
Addison is 100% obsessed with the book series Gap Lake: a twisty, soap opera-esque trail through a summer camp, stalked by Michael Meyers' younger, less cute brother. Teen slasher film: the book series, essentially. Addie is deeply invested in Gap Lake, and runs the most popular fan site (GapLakeLove - snappy title there Adds), writing fan fiction and theorizing with her friends and followers about what plot points might come next. And then, one day, it all goes to hell.
I had such high hopes for this book. Its premise is unique and very interesting, especially for a book written for 15-16 year olds. It's fast-paced, snappy, and I honestly didn't see 100% of the twist coming. But that wasn't, unfortunately, enough to save it from the depths of Gap Lake.

How I'd Describe This Book to A Friend

One day, Addie receives an email from the author of Gap Lake, RJ Rosen. She is elated to discover that RJ has stumbled upon her website and loves what she is doing, how she's engaging with the fans. And even better, he wants her to help host a blog tour for his upcoming new release! He sends her a chapter to post, and Addison excitedly obeys, gushing to her best friend Maya (whose parents are both cops, a fact that will be drilled into your head at least 10-12 times during your tenure in this book) about how lucky she is! Maya, meanwhile, just wants Addie to find an actual boyfriend and crawl out of the shadows to get some sun. Not happening.
Addie receives a message from RJ Rosen one day after school, telling her there is a surprise in store for her. Addie, who could not get more excited if she tried, careens into the journalism room with Maya, talking about how amazing this opportunity is. Sitting there, folded into a desk with her head on her hands, smelling faintly of standing water and very much not alive, is the star cheerleader: Lydia.
Some surprise, huh?
It takes off from there - Addie realizes that this murder is very reminiscent of the plot of a Gap Lake novel - unfortunately, everyone is so tired of her babbling about Gap Lake that nobody wants to listen. Good thing Maya's parents are cops you guys! Except they don't wanna hear it either. RJ Rosen becomes creepier and creepier, and Addie struggles against time and this faceless killer to unmask him before another life is taken - namely, her own.
Unfortunately, the last 15% or so of this book manages to go off the rails, and not in a fun way. Things wrap up in too neat, too perfect a little bow for such an epic shitstorm of a situation Addison, her friends and family have gotten into. Were it not for that, I'd have really enjoyed this book.

The Bottom Line

Addison is lovable, though neurotic and a little bit paranoid (understandably). Maya is a force to be reckoned with, and I really enjoyed her snappy comebacks and personality shining through. Everyone else just sort of exists, as a love interest or a disinterested parent. As I said above, this would all be forgivable were it not for this utter disaster of a final 15%. I had such high hopes for you, Copycat - you were so close!
But at least Maya's parents are cops, so it's not a total loss.
Addison is the ultimate fan girl. She blogs about her favorite murder mystery series Gap Lake. Addison receives an email from her favorite author of the series, R. J. Rosen. He wants her to help him with his upcoming book. Things turn horrible wrong when events from the Gap Lake series start happening. Not the best mystery I read but not the worst. Definitely would recommend this book to a mystery fan.
***Thank you to NetGalley for providing me a complimentary copy of COPYCAT by Hannah Jayne in exchange for my honest review.***
Addie writes fan fiction for her favorite mystery series. She can hardly believe when the writer notices her work and asks her to help with publicity for the last book of the series. But soon murders that mimic the books begin happening. Is life imitating art?
The premise of COPYCAT and having read some of Hannah Jayne’s books previously inspired me to request the ARC. Addison was a likable main character, I could practically feel her teenage enthusiasm for reading and writing. Her excitement at being contacted by Spencer felt organic.
COPYCAT moved at an even, medium pace. The dialogue was the weakest part of the story. It felt like an adult writing for a teen, rather than a teenager actually speaking. If the mystery aspect had a few surprising twists or a gotcha moment, I would have rated #COPYCAT higher.
Tweens and younger teens will probably like COPYCAT more than older kids.
R.J. Rosen, the reclusive author of the Gap Lake mystery series, is Addison's favorite author. Like R.J. Rosen, Addison protects her identity under Lady A when she writes fan fiction on her blog and for the school paper. When someone claiming to be the real R. J. Rosen contacts her to help launch the new book in the series, she can't believe her luck. The Author promises some surprises for Addison along the way but the only surprise she gets is finding a body. One of her classmates is murdered and posed similar to the new chapters of the Gap Lake book. Addison thinks there might be a copycat using the series to commit murder but nobody believes her and R.J. Rosen assures her there is still more to come.
Copycat is a YA murder mystery/thriller that reads somewhat like a book within a book. I loved the premise of this novel, about a serial killer who is mimicking a book series to commit murder. One of the things that didn't really work for me with this novel was the snippets of side story that didn't really impact the main plot. I think they were meant to be red herrings but just fell a little flat. I think this novel might be more appealing to the younger end of the YA spectrum, early teens.
#Copycat #NetGalley
The book is okay. Hannah Jayne is the suspense master of YA literature. I felt like Copycat has a lot missing that could have made it a little better. Overall, the story is good, but the ending left me a little puzzled over motivation for the events that take place. I will read her again, this one just missed for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the E-Arc copy of this novel. I have given an honest review in exchange.
