This is my first book I have read by Lucy Dawson and it won't be my last! WOW. I never saw that ending! I love when you think you have it all figured out....and you don't! I would hate to spoil this book for anyone so I will leave out any spoilers. I really liked how the book is written from the different characters viewpoint. Often I have found this confusing with other books, but not in White Lies. The author does a great job of establishing who the characters are before doing this. You feel like you are allowed into their thought process when reading their chapter. Loved it!
What a good book this is! And why have I not read anything else by Lucy Dawson? Couldn’t put it down.
Good grief. How to even begin to explain how White Lies made me feel? You know that game where you’re blindfolded and people spin you around and around and you’re left slightly nauseous, dizzy and completely disorientated? Yes, a bit like that.
Alex is a respected doctor, wife and mother. But when she crosses the line with one of her patients, she stands to lose everything. The story is mostly told by Alex and Jonathan but it quickly becomes obvious they both have rather different versions of the truth. Neither Alex or Jonathan came across as particularly likeable, nor could I figure out if they were reliable narrators. I found myself questioning every word they said and even now, I still find myself wondering if I have the right end of the stick.
In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, this story is incredibly apt. An innocent gesture may very well be blown up out of all proportions and a drunken mistake can easily ruin lives. Lucy Dawson paints a a thought-provoking and vivid picture of how hard it is to defend yourself against certain allegations, especially in a case like the one involving Alex and Jonathan.
White Lies is an utterly gripping and incredibly addictive psychological thriller that kept me up half the night and left me guessing until the very last page. It’s relatable in that way that I’m sure many of us have had a cheeky glass too many and maybe ended up doing something we might not normally do. By the time you think of the consequences, it’s usually already too late.
The ultimate conclusion left me spinning and also slightly confused for a while. During the night, when yet another bout of insomnia had me staring at the ceiling, I had a Eureka moment and all the pieces fell into place. I love this, in case you didn’t know. A storyline that keeps me guessing, that has me asking lots of questions, that has my brain going around in circles with a crazy amount of thinky-thoughts and is still on my mind days after finishing the book.
I thought Lucy Dawson’s previous book The Daughter was utterly brilliant but this one is even more so. A corker of a book and one you should undoubtedly add to your TBR right now! I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next.
Absolutely mind-blowing! Be prepared to toss everything you think out of the window because you can’t tell what’s coming. Each character has their own version of what happened, keeping you guessing as you race to the end of the book. I read it in less than one day. If you liked Lucy Dawson’s The Daughter, you are going to love this one. Simply wow!
I really enjoyed this book. There are two main narrators telling the story, Alexandra and Jonathan. They both have a different version of events. I could tell that there was an unreliable narrator, however I could not figure out who. Both characters seemed to believe their story and both stories seemed a little over the top.
I typically don't like books that speak about affairs because affairs tend to be romanticized. In this situation the adults seemed to be handling it in a more realistic, albeit maybe not the proper, way.
To my shame I have never actually read a book written by Lucy Dawson. I have a couple of them on my ever increasing, mountainous ‘TBR’ (to be read) pile but I just haven’t had the time to read them. That is going to have to change pronto as I absolutely, totally and utterly LOVED reading ‘White Lies’ but more about that in a bit.
I had mixed feelings about Dr. Alexandra Inglis to be honest. She is a family GP, who went on a spa weekend with her girlfriends, which is a yearly occurrence. Alex loves her little family consisting of her husband and children. However her perfect life is dealt a blow when her husband has a one night stand. I felt for Alex over this because she has been betrayed. I get the impression that her husband lies some of the blame for this at her door because she works very hard. Whilst on the spa weekend Alex gets her own back on her husband in the sense that she has a one night stand. This evens up the score but Alex doesn’t feel good about it. She is horrified when she finds out that the lad she had the one night stand with is not who he is pretending to be. This is only the beginning of the matter because from Alex’s one night stand onwards, Alex’s life just seems to spiral out of control. I did feel sorry for her to a degree but at the same time she doesn’t exactly help herself with all the lies, deceit and so on and so forth. Alex is a supposedly well educated woman, who has been incredibly stupid. Not only that but she gave me significant safeguarding concerns. Her one night stand partner, Jonathan is somebody who immediately set off blooming loud alarm bells ringing in my head. He becomes obsessed by Alex and he interprets things wrongly and sees signs where there aren’t any. His behaviour is very concerning and I was wary of just how far he would go to get Alex to continue an ‘affair’. Alex faces a race against time to save her reputation, her marriage, her family and her career before Jonathan destroys it all. Will Alex be able to keep her perfect life? How far will Jonathan go to destroy Alex’s perfect life? What is the truth? Is there a twist to the tale? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the story for yourselves because I am not going to tell you.
Oh my giddy aunt what a fantastic read this is. The book hits the ground running and maintains the pace throughout. The author’s writing style is such that I was hooked from the first word on the first page and I was under the book’s spell until the moment I closed the back cover so to speak. I just kept on reading and reading because I was desperate to know how the story concluded, find out what really happened, if Jonathan destroyed Alex and whether or not Alex could save her perfect life. The story compels you to continue reading. The pages just kept turning themselves and before I knew it I had finished the book, which I had mixed feelings about. On the one hand I was pleased to know how the story ended but at the same time I was enjoying the story, the characters and the writing style so much that I just wanted the book to continue. I seriously didn’t realise how quickly the time was going because I was so into the book and the first time I checked the clock, I was surprised to find that I had cleared 40% of the book and I had ‘lost’ three hours. ‘White Lies’ is certainly one hell of a read and one hell of a rollercoaster ride. The only bad thing now is that I just know I am going to have a book hangover. ‘White Lies’ is one of those books that will stick in my mind for a long time to come.
In short I absolutely loved reading ‘White Lies’ and I can’t praise the book highly enough. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody and everybody. I am now off to dig out Lucy Dawson’s other books and make reading them a priority. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board just has to be 5* out of 5* but I would have awarded it 10* out of 5* if I could have because I really did enjoy the book that much.
I was given an ecopy of this book by Kim at Bookouture in exchange for an honest review. This is something I am more than happy to do.
Where to begin other than to say I didn't think anything could top Lucy Dawsons last novel The Daughter but I was wrong White Lies is outstanding. Lucy has written a book that will chill you to the bone, a story that is shockingly believable yet unbelievable at the same time. As I turned the pages my mind raced to unscramble the clues, believing I had it all wrapped up until the next chapter and everything I thought I knew was discounted.
White Lies is centred around Alex a doctor in her local GP's surgery and Jonathan a young seventeen year old that she has a chance encounter with whilst on a girls holiday in Ibiza only to come face to face with him in unexpected circumstances when she gets home. Thats where the nightmare begins - or does it?
White Lies has many voices. Each chapter is recounted by a different person, mainly told by Alex and Jonathan but Rob, Alex's husband and David her partner in the GP practice along with Cherry, Jonathans girlfriend each bring their voice and perspective to the story too.
I could feel the tension rising and literally taste the fear as the story spiralled round and round - there were so many differences of opinion and angles to the same story that it was impossible to have a clear certainty of what I believed. The incredible ability Lucy Dawson has to create characters that are not just mildly plausible but totally believable is something I admire greatly. I lost myself totally immersed as if I was reading a true account written in the local media.
It's frightening to be faced with the reality that decisions made or not made, little white lies told for the right or wrong reason can affect not just the circumstances or people present but ripple out way beyond an imaginable point and have such an incredible impact - literally chasing the course of peoples lives. Our reputation is something we take years to build and yet it can be shattered in seconds by words or actions that in themselves are nothing!
Thank you so much AGAIN Bookouture, for another incredible read, this book was truly outstanding another one I'll be shouting about to everyone.
Thank you so much Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this outstanding book
White Lies by Lucy Dawson is a Psychological Thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My Synopsis:
Dr. Alexandra Inglis is a respected doctor. Her husband of 8 years was her patient when they first met, and married. Even though they are still together, their relationship was frowned upon by the medical board, and Alex has a blemish that will stay on her record. Doctors and patients do not mix. So when she is accused of abusing her doctors privilege again, this time with a 17 year-old boy, the question is why. She admits she slept with Jonathan. But now it is a he-said/she-said kind of deal. He is saying the relationship has gone on for 3 months, and it was totally consensual, until she got possessive. She says they slept together once, when she was drunk, and he has been stalking her ever since.
Alex’s life is spinning out of control. Her husband, Rob, is trying to stick by her. After all, he has not been a saint either. Her friend and co-worker David is also trying to be supportive. But there are so many inconsistencies in the stories, it is hard to know who to believe, and everyone is questioning each other.
My Opinions:
Almost stopped reading this one because of the topic. Do I really want to read about an affair? No. Do I want a love story? No. Yes, the subject matter could be taken off the newspaper today. Older person of authority takes advantage of younger person, in this case a female Doctor and her young male patient. But it didn’t interest me. It was only because I loved a previous book by Lucy Dawson (The Daughter) that I stuck with this one. So glad I did.
This book is more of a he said/she said thriller that goes way beyond the normal authority trust and abuse issues. This story shows the depths of obsession that can arise from a relationship, and the many “little” lies that are told to justify something. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters in the book, none really had any redemptive qualities. That made it hard to stay interested. However, told from multiple points of view, the book is a very fast read and had enough twists that you had to stick around and see what came next. This book had its jaws clenched tight on my hand, and I had to keep turning the pages. I kept changing my mind as to the guilty (or rather guiltiest) party. I must say that the ending was a definite surprise, but I’m not sure it was the right one…but that’s just me.
Overall, it was much better than I thought it was going to be when I started out, but it just missed the mark at the end.
Another wonderfully intense and twisted psychological thriller from this absolutely brilliant author. An addictive, unforgettable tale. I loved it so much. This author just keeps getting better and better. Cannot wait for her next.
In White Lies, Alex goes to Ibiza and ends up having one night stand. If you read the book, you will understand the reasons why she decided to do this. Alex doesn’t usually take such risks; she is a mother, a doctor and … a wife. With lot remorse, she hopes to put the incident behind her. Needless to say, things don’t quite work out that way especially when the past refuses to remain hidden.
The story is narrated through multiple POVs. Alex tells her side of the story about her night with Jonathan. We then get to follow her narration on how the night affected her life. Jonathan is also another main narrator. We get his side of events before and after the incident. There are a few chapters narrated by David, Alex’s colleague, Rob, her husband and Cherry, Jonathan’s girlfriend.
This was quite a roller-coaster. I thought the story was going to be pretty straightforward but soon realized that there were way too many versions of the same incident hence making it hard to guess who was telling the truth. I kept shifting between Alex and Jonathan because both were so convincing. I like the character development in the story. The author made it easy to understand each of the personalities. I was especially drawn to Alex whose life was quickly unraveling because of that ‘one’ drunk, mistake.
This book has unpredictable twists. The tension escalated towards the end with a couple of reveals that made my jaw drop. The final chapter left me thinking about the reveals and their implications. You know how you read a book and then start analyzing events and thinking about how certain things could have happened differently if the characters had made different decisions? I am still thinking about this one and I love the fact that the author decided to end the book that way. No, it wasn’t a cliffhanger but an ending that just makes you analyze everything.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers, White Lies by Lucy Dawson is perfect for you. Its fast-past paced, captivating with enough suspense to keep you turning pages until the end.
WoW what an gripping book White Lies by Lucy Dawson was a first. I was gripped from the first few pages. I found this book very addictive and I couldn't put down. This book has a lot of twists and turns that will keep you gripped and you will think who so telling the truth. However, Then ending was such a let down! Which was a Shame as I love Lucy Dawsons Books.
I received an ARC from Net Galley and publisher Bookouture in exchange for an honest review.
The story opens with Alex, a well established GP who is married with two small children, on a girls weekend in Ibiza and she wakes up with a man in her bed. She goes back home absolutely mortified and confesses all to her husband who has recently cheated on his wife with a female work colleague. They decide to try to forget their infidelities and move on, except that isn't going to happen when Alex discovers the man she woke up next to is a patient at her surgery and her world falls apart. This quickly descends into a he did, she did scenario, but which of them is telling the truth?
This is the first book I've read by this author and I was hooked from the first page, I loved how each of the characters told their version of events in separate chapters and with each new chapter my mind was changed again and again as to who was the guilty party. The author depicts brilliantly what a moment of madness can do to a person's life and how things can never be the same again. The twist when it came was most unexpected, I would never have predicted that outcome. I loved this book and will certainly be reading more of her work.
Thank you to Bookouture for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon.
I know this book has superb reviews but it did not entertain me at all. I found it just too unlikely and unbelievable but I acknowledge I am in the minority.
thoroughly enjoyed this book. the story was told from the viewpoint of different characters in the book and for a good section of the book i wasn’t sure who was telling the truth!
Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.
Alex is a respected family doctor married with two small children. Several weeks after her husband confesses to a one night stand she goes on a girls weekend trip to Ibiza. In a nightclub she meets a younger man and ends up in her hotel room with him for one night of sex. Is this revenge for her husband's cheating or is there more to this?
Back home she is stunned to find out what should have stayed in Ibiza has followed her home with horrifying consequences. Her night of passion quickly turns into a nightmare for her personally and professionally. Jonathan is a 17 year old diabetic patient of hers who becomes infatuated with her and wants more than the night they shared on holiday.
There are so many people keeping secrets in this tale that it is hard to work out who is telling the truth. Is Alex guilty of professional misconduct or is she the innocent party we are led to believe? Is Jonathan the "innocent" 17 year old that has been corrupted by the older woman? Would we as the reader feel the same if the sexes were reversed? As a mother I shook my head at the seemingly callousness of Alex but self protection is her goal.
This was a riveting novel that would have been 5* for me but for the ending. I really didn't like the twist.
I loved this book. I was hooked right from the start and read this book in 24 hours due to not wanting to put it down! I love that you see the story from both Alex’s and Jonathan’s point of view, and it keeps you guessing the whole way through. I was definitely surprised by the ending and was not expecting that outcome! Would definitely recommend to people.
Lucy Dawson is definitely a go to author for me. Everything that I have read by her has been fantastic and this one definitely did not disappoint. I read this whilst away on holidays and it was very hard to put down.
Alex Inglis is a family doctor, somebody that has the trust and respect of her patients and community. Will one mistake destroy her career and her family? Whilst away on a girls weekend Alex has a one night stand with a younger man. On her return home she discovers that he is a 17 year old patient of hers, Jonathon Day.
She confesses to her husband and hopes that that will be the end of it, but it is only the beginning. Jonathon becomes obsessed and will not leave Alex and her family alone. Her life starts to unravel - how can she take back control.
This is a fantastic book, one that will have you wanting more. Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opinions
"The truth does not always out, and for that we must all be thankful."
Dr. Alexandra Inglis has what she says was a one night stand while on a girls weekend to Ibiza. The other party, a boy she didn't realize was 17 years old, Jonathan Day. He says that Alex had come on to him and that they had been carrying on previous to the trip. He was her patient at the clinic where she worked. What follows is a classic tale of two people telling a story, but which one of them -- if either -- is telling the truth?
This drama is sort of like a train wreck. You don't want to look, but you can't help yourself. Throughout the narrative, I had to come to grips with the fact that I had no clue who was revealing an accurate depiction of the events. First I believe one, and then the other. NO SPOILERS. But the conclusion was unexpected.
The novel is compulsively readable and kept my interest. That said, I am still not sure what to think of the whole fiasco. Definitely would be a book where the themes beg discussion. Would it ever be OK for a 40 year old woman to have a sexual affair with a 17 year-old boy -- consensual or not? Read it and see what you think.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC to read and review.
Dr. Alexandra Inglis dangerously crosses the line with one of her patients, 17-year-old Jonathan Day. She confesses this to her husband, then making every certainty that she didn’t know he was a patient at the time and that it will never happen again. She is immediately forgiven. But Jonathan has other ideas. This presents a danger that she never could have imagined.
What ensues in this book is the true definition of a psychological thriller! Alex will do anything to keep her family together – anything. This book is definitely designed to be read from cover to cover without taking a break! Who is really telling the truth and what really creates the danger that lurks in White Lies? The ending truly blew my mind! Definitely a must read.
I have just read He Said/She Said so this book could well have coloured my judgement and expectation but it wasn't for me at all. The idea of a 17 year old and a female GP -nah. The writing and the twists were good so there's many who will appreciate this but sorry, I can't say i enjoyed it.
