I'm always attracted to books featuring squirrels, but this one never quite excels beyond the most basic jokes. It's merely an OK children's book with general appeal. It doesn't stand out in any way.
I think this book is so cute!! My Granddaughter Loves this book!! She makes me read to her every time I see her!! I think children will love this book!!
Very cute and delightful! Will please young readers and make them giggle. It reminds me of other funny children's books by one of my favorite children's authors, the superb Mo Willems.
This is a fun and comical book that should keep the kids laughing. It's bright colors and sharp details will delight readers of every age.
THis is the sort of book that's difficult to read to a group. It would be better one on one, where you can really engage with the images.
Adorable book! My 6 year old loved the title--great story, fun drawings..what is not to love? ( He's also a big taco fan, so...that helped a lot, too!) We read it several times and he has asked for a copy of his own.
"This is a squirrel . . . "Hey, I may be a squirrel, but my name is Taco! And I don't eat nuts and tree bark—blech—I prefer tacos!" The natural predator of squirrels is . . . "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Who is writing this book? I do not like where this is going." This hilarious send-up of a children's nature primer teaches kids that the most important story is the one you write yourself."
This is a LOL book for kids. It's done in one of my favorite illustrative styles and like a furry, kiddie Deadpool, the squirrel is aware of the narrator which is a bonus for me as it seems to involve kids more. Taco, the squirrel, has a witty sense of humor with quick comeback which sometimes speaks to an older audience, but it doesn't mean a younger crowd can't laugh about it. It's a multi-layer picture book which makes it a good read for group events.
The book flows well for being purposely choppy and a bit on the shorter side. The message at the end was s nice surprise to tie the book together from beginning to end so it feels good to read too. Who doesn't love tacos with a side of empowerment?
Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this adorable book. A very fun family read, my elementary aged daughter and I both enjoyed it.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Lion Forge for my unbiased opinion of the book. I loved this book! I loved the graphics. The silly story created is cute. Kids are going to love this book!
This Is a Taco! by Andrew Cangelose, Josh Shipley is a hilarious children's book told by a squirrel named Taco. It starts with a few facts about squirrels. Taco is fine, until the author tells us what squirrels eat. At this point Taco speaks directly to the reader, explaining that he does not like nuts and tree bark, his favorite food is tacos! As the facts continue, Taco intervenes more and more actually changing the story to what he wants it to say.
This is a great book for young readers and writers as well as being used for a mentor text when teaching about voice. The illustrations are funny and add to the story showing his emotions, especially when there is a hawk around. A great book for schools, classroom, and family libraries.
Thank you Diamond Book Distributors and Lion Forge via NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A cute picture book about a squirrel named Taco who loves tacos. He also offer some great taco wisdom: if you want tacos in your story, then YOU make sure there are tacos in your story. (I'm on vacation right now and I made sure there were tacos. Haven't seen any squirrels though.)
I enjoyed this cute book about a squirrel that loves Taco's. The story includes some educational facts about squirrels written in a fun and humorous way, with fantastic illustrations to match, and also shows kids that they can create their own stories.
It was a humorous enough snippet of a story but I really feel like there could have been more. We are promised a taco loving squirrel but really only get to see one instance of this in action. I don't mind that Taco looks more like a beaver than a squirrel but I'd like to see more of the root for his chosen name.
In terms of a children's book, the pages baring only text may need some borders or embellishments to keep young eyes interested. A real quick read, won't help anyone develop new vocabulary but might give them a giggle.
This was just way too adorable! This one I will definitely recommend to every parent I know. It is just so cute! This has to be the funniest children's book I've read in a long time-truly laugh out loud at times. Will be picking this one up for my son.
Taco the squirrel loves tacos! In fact, he agreed to be in this book because he thought there would be tacos in it. But where are the tacos?
This Is a Taco! is a clever and humorous book. The pages include nonfiction style facts about squirrels with Taco the squirrel demonstrating those facts, but not always in the way you’d expect. As the facts continue, and the lack of tacos and threat of predators becomes more real, Taco the squirrel takes action, and changes the facts with a red pen to better suit his needs.
Kids will enjoy the humor of the text and illustrations in this story!
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review!
Mmmmm. Tacos. Even the word by itself makes me drool a little. Who doesn't like tacos, crazy people that's who!? I can tell you who loves tacos and it is the squirrel.
I think this just might be my favorite children's book ever. I say children's, but really this book can appeal to all ages and get a chuckle out of even the most staunch adults who only read Proust in the original French. This book is funny, and the illustrations are absolutely marvelous. It reminds me of the humor that one would find online in your weekly webcomics. Concise and to the point. It also breaks the fourth wall a bit, especially when dealing with tacos. So really win-win for all. I see many kids in the future and their parents getting many chuckles from the adventures of the squirrel.
Shorter than I'd expected, but a cute comic about a squirrel who decides it wants to change the narrative of its own story. The art style is dynamic and engaging in a way that would surely appeal to young readers.
This was such a fun read for both my 3.5 year old son and my 1 year old daughter. My son loved the silliness of the tacos and the squirrel facts and my daughter just thought everything was cute and kept saying “awwww”. The length was a perfect length to keep their attention.
Very cute and funny read!
This book was hilarious! It starts out as almost a National Geographic type of book. "This is a squirrel." "Squirrels love to eat nuts -" That kind of information. And then you have Taco. He is less than impressed with the narrator's idea of what a squirrel is, especially when the hawk comes out! So, Taco gets a marker and decides to start rewriting the story, hastily of course because he has to avoid that hawk! We laughed our way through the hilarious antics of Taco, the Squirrel.
This book has such beautiful illustrations, taking creativity to the next level. Mister Chu laughed and laughed when he saw the picture of the giant taco. And Taco, the Squirrel has the funniest expressions throughout this book! This is a Taco! is one of our favorite KidLit books so far this year! Quote the four-year-old "This was a good book. And a good taco."
This was a super cute and funny book. I got it to read cause that's what I was expecting a cute kids book about a squirrel named taco. His favorite food lol
