A fun and humorous graphic novella for kids. I loved the illustrations, as well as the way the main character would cross out words to make the story follow his own hopes and aspirations. Not only good for laugh, readers will learn a few facts about squirrels, and hopefully the desire to be the master of their own story.
This interactive book did seem promising at first but the storyline felt flat. Beautiful vivid illustrations and cute characters tough.
This book made me laugh! It is cute and fun! I can't wait to purchase it and give it as gifts to all the littles in my life.
Sometimes picture books are for adults. There are obvious examples like Go the F*ck to Sleep and then there are not so obvious examples like This Is A Taco!
While a cute story about a squirrel obsessed with tacos the use of 'breaking the third wall' in this book went over the heads of the 3 and 5 1/2 year old I read it to. Unfortunately they were confused about why there were pages crossed out and what the big deal was with tacos. Because to them squirrels eat acorns.
The first half of the book was really good, and we all learned (yes including me) that squirrels can rotate their ankles all the way around. But as soon as the hawk and the squirrel talking to the readers started up I lost the attention of the 3-year-old and my 5 1/2 year old kept asking questions. Mostly she couldn't understand why a squirrel would like tacos. Although she did tell me a story about having tacos for dinner a few nights before (lol).
So for me this one may be fun for older kids and adults but it missed the mark for my girls.
This is a funny, quick story for children. I imagine it would be a good bedtime story on rushed nights since it only takes about two minutes to read. The illustrations are great, especially of the tacos.
Children may look at squirrels in a new light after reading this book. Watch out, they might try to feed them tacos.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! This book is funny! I'm a nearly 40 year old Mom and former elementary teacher, as I giggled my way through this book I thought of so many ways to use this book in an elementary classroom BEYOND just entertaining. And it's super entertaining! Every spring preschool and elementary teachers pull out non-fiction texts to teach about squirrels, this one isn't non-fiction, but has a lot of good facts. Another idea, in upper elementary grades as a model writing book for fiction texts that teach. Oh and the illustrations are magical! They make the book! I'll be shocked if this book isn't on a best seller list soon! Personally, I'll be buying a copy of this book to share with my kids!
Received this book as an earc from NetGalley. It was cute and I enjoyed the art style but I wish that the second half of the story had been just a little longer and we had been able to see more of Taco interacting with the book.
This book was the cutest thing ever! I loved the way Taco stole the show. It starts off with some actual squirrel facts, but when hawks enter the mix, Taco doesn't like where things are going. So, he decides to put things into his own hands by rewriting the story. This is a wonderful conversation starter for your little leaders.
Taco is a squirrel, and he loves to eat tacos. But he has some trouble getting that across in way that keeps him out of danger in the adorable picture book This Is a Taco. Author Andrew Cangelose and Illustrator Josh Shipley have put together a fun story that teaches kids not just about the squirrels that are running around in their backyards but also about picking up the pen and finding your own story.
Taco, the squirrel, teaches us all about how to take our stories in a new direction. He makes mistakes and faces dangerous situations, but he figures out how to keep writing his own story and never gives up. This Is a Taco is a creative, engaging, beautifully illustrated book that is fun for kids of all ages (including mine, which I will not be saying out loud).
This Is a Taco is a makes a great gift for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, babysitters and nannies, and anyone else who cares for and reads to kids. This is a new classic, and it will live on bookshelves and in readers' hearts for a long time to come.
Galleys for This Is a Taco were provided by Diamond Book Distributors through NetGalley, with many thanks.
This is a Taco! is a fun book for preschoolers about squirrels, tacos, and Taco the squirrel. It starts as an informative book about squirrels, which quickly is derailed by Taco and his hunger for his namesake. The book breaks the fourth wall a little bit (a giant taco might be involved), and all in all this is a fun light read that will get a chuckle out of kids.
Cute illustrations and overall nice message. My seven year old enjoy reading it and the humor was well suited to her age level.
This is a story about a squirrel called Taco. We find out some interesting facts about squirrels, but I feel the most important part of this text is that it opens up a new dimension to children - they can see how a few alterations to a story can change it. Children that I have taught in the past have struggled with the notion of editing their work. I hope to use this to support scaffolding of that in the future.

It's a children's book about a squirrel named Taco. While trying for an educational slant it's mostly comedy. His name is also his favorite food.
It's cute. I'd buy it. He's a little self-absorbed so it'd be a good social/ emotional. Or, general social or focus on imagination.

An absolute gem! I loved this book mAn absolute gem! I loved this book more than I thought. I actually picked up this book to see if it would be appropriate for my nieces who are 4 and 9 but found myself thoroughly entertained. Almost every single page had me laughing out loud. The book is hilarious without being too juvenile or inappropriate and is not heavy-handed about teaching morals. The art style is not garish or ugly, fitting the story nicely. This is an amusing book meant to entertain and works for a variety of ages. I highly recommend it for parents looking for something different for their children.

Bright Illustrations but somewhat silly concept that kids might find funny. The hawk is confusing and replacing it with a.n oversized taco negates that it’s a true predator.
Such a fun book for kids and adults alike. The illustration is colorful and bright. Taco breaks the fourth wall in a humorous way to remind us that we write our own stories. Pleasant diversion from tedious children's books.
Thank you to Net Galley and to the publisher for the opportunity to review.
I initially was attracted to this book by the cover, of course. "Squirrel!" is a running joke in my family when we lose our concentration and forget what we were saying. I thought this would be a cute little book for my son and, not only was I right, but I soon found out that I was as interested in the book as my kid. The illustrations in this book are top notch, incredibly rich in detail and color. It's a great book for fun facts about squirrels that is broken up with humor by a squirrel named Taco - some of the facts even being new to me. I thought it was a decent length for my son but he ended up sad that he didn't have even more Taco after the story was finished.
Very cute! I liked how the squirrel interacted with the story. This book was humorous and did give some true facts about squirrels in the meantime!
This is a Taco! by Andrew Cangelose is a fun picture book for kids. In it, a squirrel named Taco just loves tacos. The book teaches facts about how squirrels live and what they eat, but it does so in such a fun way. Taco can't fathom eating some of the things that squirrels eat, not when there are tacos! My seven year old son just loved this book. I highly recommend it. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher. These opinions are entirely my own.
My kids loved this book and made me read it to them twice. It’s a cute story about a squirrel that loves tacos and doesn’t the the way his story is being written. Informative, and keeps children’s attention the whole way through.
