This is a really fun book that I know kids will just love. A little squirrel named Taco, because he loves tacos, narrates the story and speaks directly to the reader.

The book begins by acquainting the young audience with realistic facts about squirrels, like how they are the cleanest rodents in the wild, are known for their silky fur, and how they love to eat nuts, acorns, and even tree bark. Hey wait!!! Where are the tacos that Taco was told would be available. Tree bark? You've got to be kidding....ya right... how could anyone eat that? After the fun facts of diet... (not)... Taco feels he has no choice but to step into the storyline and change the whole narrative in his favour. If he does then perhaps that might steer him towards getting the tacos that he was promised. Tree bark? Really? Yuk!!!!!

The hilarious expressions that this adorable squirrel exhibits are truly uproarious. Taco steps into the writing process and takes charge. He swashbuckles a bright red pen and changes start to appear. He appoints himself his own editor-in-chief. Taco crosses out words and re-directs the story to be all about...him...TACO. Now he is satisfied with the plot and feels vidicated.

He encounters a giant taco who is hungry for tacos too and wants to swoop in and gobble them all up. Not on Taco's watch. He decides the story needs one more correction to make it perfect. With a swoosh of his red pen he declares:

"Taco, the squirrel
(and not an actual giant, talking taco),
is the natural predator
of tacos."

The moral of the story? If you want anything done right, do it yourself and most importantly the best story of all is the one you write yourself.... especially if you are the star.

I highly recommend this book and I am sure kids will love it and want to read it again and again. Taco 'bout cute? This story's got it going on!

Note: I received this book from the author/publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is pretty much everything I'm interested in all wrapped up into one book. 1. I love squirrels. 2. I love tacos. 3. I love eating tacos. 4. I love books. 5. I love silly humor. And somehow, this book managed to be all of those things at once. I immediately added this to my Amazon list to purchase and I don't even have kiddos to read this to (unless my cat sits still to listen, I suppose). Taco, the squirrel, helps narrate this book which includes some facts about squirrels and then...things get much more taco-y. I enjoy picture books that speak directly to the reader since they feel more immersive and the art is really fun and silly. Definitely a recommend to all my fellow taco and squirrel lovers out there!

I liked this book, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would from the cover and first pages. I think my problem with it was the dialogue in the word bubbles felt like a bit too much for a read aloud book. It jumped around an awful lot, making it difficult to read aloud to a child or group of children. There is plenty to like in the story, such as the fabulous illustrations and the way the squirrel changed the text with crayon.

This book had me at "TACO!" And My 5 year old and I loved it too.

One of my favorite books growing up was The Monster At The End of This Book and This Is A Taco reminded me of that. The book starts out as though it will be an educational book about squirrels but the squirrel character, which is adorably named Taco, interjects his own thoughts. He eventually not only makes comments about the book but starts changing things. My daughter asked me to read it again as soon as we finished and found it even more entertaining the second time as I read the educationally parts in a "fancy" documentary style accent and the squirrel parts in a fast, squeaky voice. Very fun book which I am preordering now. I think a physical copy will be even more enjoyable to read.

"Kids, remember: If you want tacos in your story, then YOU make sure there are tacos in your story."

I just LOVE tacos (though I am not sure if I love them as much as Taco the squirrel in this book) and so I had to try out this book. Boy, I am hungry for tacos now. Too bad I can't just get/make a taco at this moment. Argh. So warning to all, be sure to have tacos with you when reading because you will want some after reading.

So I first thought that this book would just be a simple picture book about squirrel named Taco who loves Tacos with all sorts of facts about squirrels, instead it is MUCH more. It is a fun fourth wall breaking kind of book where the squirrel takes over the story when he realises that there are a) no tacos in the near future (even though he signed up because tacos were promised) and b) when a hawk swoops down to nomnom on our squirrel. I totally agreed with the little dude, I would have done the same. I didn't sign up to be abused (and eaten) like this! I came for tacos (and squirrels).

I loved how Taco took over the story and how he made it a story that fitted him so much better (and yummier). I loved seeing him cross out words and write new ones, or jumping in between the pages to fix/stop stuff.

The art was pretty decent, I quite like the style. I love the expressions on Taco's face (from his face when he flew through the air, to when he found his tacos). Pluspoints to the deliciously drawn tacos. *stomach rumbles*

All in all, this is one tacotastic book I would recommend.

This book is a delight to read. It's semi-information, completely inspirational, and funny. I could easily see me purchasing this book for my children (who are now grown) and for children of my friends and relatives. This is light reading and a very subtle tale on how to take control over your own story.

This was very funny. There are some things to learn about squirrels tucked in here and there, but overall it was more about fun and less about learning.

What a fun, silly book I happen to know a taco-loving kiddo that would absolutely adore this story. I love that it is educational while still being humorous. I would recommend this book to taco lovers everywhere.

This is a hilarious children's book told by a squirrel named Taco. It starts with a few facts about squirrels. Taco is fine, until the author tells us what squirrels eat. At this point Taco speaks directly to the reader, explaining that he does not like nuts and tree bark, his favorite food is tacos! As the facts continue, Taco intervenes more and more actually changing the story to what he wants it to say. This is a great book for young readers and writers as well as being used for a mentor text when teaching about voice. The illustrations are funny and add to the story showing his emotions, especially when there is a hawk around. A great book for schools, classroom, and family libraries.

Ok, I have a confession to make. I don't like squirrels. At all. I have a long-standing feud with one particular squirrel about the property rights in my backyard. But Taco the squirrel is pretty funny. I mean, I like tacos too, so I get his motivation.

This book starts out as a cheeky little fact book about squirrels. The main character, Taco, is used to illustrate (sometimes to his dismay) some of the things that squirrels do. About halfway through the book things get more interesting as Taco rewrites the story to suit his needs.

This is a fun little story that I know the little ones in my life would find hilarious. Besides learning a few squirrel facts, there's a gentle message about making your life what you want it to be. I can see this being a book that gets re-read many times, but it's short and sweet, so I don't think it would become one of the ones I hide behind the china cabinet because I just can't stand the thought of reading it even one more time.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free electronic ARC of this book, received in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my gosh. How flipping cute is this book?!!

Poor little Taco the squirrel. All he wants is tacos. This is a cute story that starts out educating about squirrels before....well. I'll let you read it.

Next I wanna read about Garbage the prairie dog!

Er... yes. Too flippant to be useful. Or amusing. Looks good, but ultimately a waste of five minutes.

I found this story to be quite fun! The adorable main character, Taco the squirrel, had some things he wanted to share directly with the readers. I just know that children will love this interactively written book, and will be laughing out loud.

I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't like the book. The drawings were cute and the titled looked like it would be fun. But it wasn't. The story was , well, kind of stupid.

You can learn about squirrels through reading books written about squirrels. However, you might be more curious about what you can learn straight from the source itself! Taco (the squirrel) takes his red pen to the story to inform you that he prefers tacos over acorns, and bushes to trees, and all the other things that make him unlike all other squirrels (and tacos). Great example of a character with voice and personality. A mentor choice for a mini lesson in writer's workshop- when teaching autobiographies or modeling for kids topic choice. A funny book with vibrant graphic novel style illustrations. I love how Taco's comments are in talking bubbles. Fans of Melanie Watt's Chester books will love This is a Taco. We'll all be waiting for the sequel!

This is a Taco is absolutely adorable. (It reminded me of Chester by Melanie Watt, where the character gets involved with the story and changes the outcome, which is also a HUGE favorite of mine.) Taco is a squirrel who also loves Tacos! This is a Taco starts off like a guide to squirrels, where we learn that squirrels have really soft fur and prairie dog hairstylists. The images for the accompanying pages are adorable. Taco is the perfect squirrel. He's round and fluffy and his speech bubbles are on point. Taco gets worried when he learns that Hawks are a squirrel's natural predator and takes over the story. Adorable book and I highly recommend.
