There is one thing absolutely sure about any book featuring Dewey Andreas . There will be action galore! Since Ben Coes first introduced Dewey as an employee of an ocean going drill rig his character has grown in stature and the violence that he interacts with along with his increasing importance to the U.S. government. Bloody Sunday finds Dewey reeling from previous adventures narrated in prior books. He is getting ready to retire from the CIA and just relax. Obviously this is not a possibility for Dewey - his country needs him and fast.

North Korea has successfully developed nuclear bombs but not the long range missiles necessary to deliver them to their arch enemy - the United States. But of course where there is a will there is always a way and so it is that a trade has been planned between the North Koreans and another mad regime in Iran. The Iranians will exchange two missiles for nuclear triggers and fissionable material to help them develop their own anti west weaponry. But both of these evil doers have not reckoned on Dewey Andreas being called up by the president of the United States to break up the scheme. Present with the CIA is a brilliant British agent on loan to aid in inter-agency relations. It is a young lady who is quite pretty and trying to get over the murder of her husband. It is thought that her husband was killed in error in place of her. Jenna Hartford, the exchange agent has come up with a scheme to inject a poison into the person of the high level North Korean officer that will be handling the trade between Iran and his country. An antidote would be hidden somewhere in the city of Pyongyang the capital of North Korea to deliver to the officer injected once he delivers the secret plans for the firing of the missiles to the U.S. Obviously Dewey is the ideal man to handle the tasks of both breaking up the trade, and injecting the poison.
Action involves the first set of problems complicated by Dewey injecting himself with a tiny quantity of the poison and than having only 24 hours to go after the antidote. The events are machine gun fast and calculated to keep the reader drawn to the book with no inclination to put it down. Of course the novel leaves us with the ingredients for the next book featuring Dewey Andreas and the possibility of a romance while involved with the events he faces.

Another fastball from Coes, who's swiftly rising up the list of "my" library's most-anticipated series authors with each Dewey Andreas adventure. The author manages to rocket up the tension as Andreas races to save himself in spite of Avid Readers knowing there's no way he'll fail. (And then pivots to saving the world, natch.) Perfect set up for at least one future installment, to boot--which cannot come soon enough for me.

It was exciting to get an ARC of the new Ben Coes novel Bloody Sunday. I am a huge fan and find his Dewey Andreas character to be one of the most likable in the genre. Coes is an expert at writing action scenes and relationship scenes. Bloody Sunday takes on the tense issue of nuclear arms in North Korea..He paints the picture fairly and then has Dewey do his thing. That the United States has soldiers of great skills and tact who keep their head in tough situations should be no surprise. Ben Coes presents them well.
That said, thrillers where a super good guy hero takes on astounding odds are becoming cliche.. We know when they fight battles that they will win. We know that the world will be saved. The art of writing the thriller then takes on even greater importance. Dealing with these factors will separate the best from the others, and Ben Coes will be among the best.
Thanks, NetGalley for the ARC.

Ben Coes delivers another gripping, pulse pounding thriller. His Dewey Andreas series just keeps getting better and better!

Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader, is very sick, and he is hell bent on taking the world down with him in a blaze of glory. He immediately ramps up North Korea's production of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Dewey Andreas is on a personal mission to track down one of the men responsible for the death of his wife. After this mission is completed, Dewey informs the CIA director that he is calling it quits in order to pursue a normal life.

Jenna Hartford is an MI6 operations architect. She joins the Directorate of Operations in the CIA and quickly finds herself in the middle of a global incident.

Jenna and another agent develop a sophisticated plan to gain intel from a high ranking North Korean official. Everyone knows that there is only one man that can complete this mission. Dewey reluctantly agrees to take the assignment, which takes him to Macau, China's gambling mecca. But Dewey soon discovers that there could be grave consequences in that decision. He finds himself in a life or death race against time, with the fate of himself and millions of others hanging in the balance.

There are plenty of graphic action scenes in this book. Dewey travels across the globe and encounters danger at every turn. At certain times he is not completely sure who he can trust. The thrilling conclusion will leave you breathless. I definitely look forward to the next installment in this series!

I would recommend this book to fans of action, thrillers, and espionage. I received this as a free ARC from St. Martin's Press on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
