Lies was a quick read; fast paced action from the beginning to the very end, with short, rapid-fire chapters. That alone should have made it a fun, easy weekend or beach type book. Unfortunately, it was dragged down by the most annoying characters I’ve encountered in quite awhile. The main character was a married man who was unbelievably naive and whenever he was given the choice between doing something smart and sensible or doing incredibly stupid things, seemed to always end up doing the wrong thing. The entire time I was reading the book I was so annoyed with this man.
So, I’m torn about this book. I liked the plot, pacing and setting, but pretty much disliked all the characters, including a four-year old child who was extremely whiny.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy. This book was a pretty standard thriller. I enjoyed the book, but I didn’t really get anything new from this. I would read other things from this author.
Did not see that ending coming and that makes this a great read. A clever piece of writing keeps this reader up way past bedtime. What besides sex and greed drives people to such devious undertakings? No thoughts given to hurting those closest. No remorse for killing another person. The clever use of technology. No longer are apps something you order at your local café, instead they are these sneaky applications used to manipulate, obfuscate, and deceive. I admit I may be a creature of the distant past, not knowing the existence of such technology and would not think it is something the average man, woman, or child would know of or have access to. The power of suggestion is well demonstrated. The ability to partake in heinous acts comes to mind. A truly mind-numbing conclusion.
"Everything you know is a lie. There was a stranger in my house, and I was married to her."
Joe's ordinary life as a part-time English high school teacher and stay-at-home-dad to his adorable 4-year-old son William is thrown into absolute chaos when William sees his mother's car parked at a seedy hotel. William begs his dad to stop to see his mommy, which Joe does out of curiosity. What is his wife, a stunning, successful businesswoman, doing at a rundown hotel in the middle of the afternoon when she should be at work?
Joe reluctantly parks their car and enters the hotel. There, he discovers that his wife is meeting with a mutual family friend, Ben, who is wealthy beyond imagination. Ben and Joe's wife are having what appears to be a heated discussion over a meal. Realizing this isn't the best place for a 4-year-old, Joe quickly exits the hotel hoping his wife and Ben did not see them. As soon as they get to their car, Ben appears out of nowhere. Joe and Ben get into a confrontation, which leads to Joe pushing Ben onto the ground. Ben's head hits the pavement and he is knocked unconscious.
As if things can't get worse, William starts to have an asthma attack and Joe can't find his inhaler. Joe abandons Ben in the parking lot and speeds home to get William's inhaler. Plagued with guilt, Joe heads back to the parking lot once William is better only to discover Ben is no longer there. What happened to Ben? Is he okay? Or did something terrible happen?
Even worse, Joe confronts his wife about Ben and fails to get a straight answer from her about their meeting. What is Joe's wife lying about? Why won't she tell Joe the truth? In the meantime, Ben has gone missing. Ben's wife, Beth, and teenage daughter, Alice, are distraught and report his disappearance to the police. Soon Joe is drawn into a police investigation and becomes the number one suspect in Ben's possible murder. Joe's friends and family doubt his innocence, leaving him on his own to solve the mystery of what happened to Ben.
TM Logan's Lies is a heart-pounding, fast-paced thriller that never has a dull moment. There are so many creative twists and turns in this book and I was sad to see it end. I loved all the cyber espionage in the story and the discussions of how technology can be used to sabotage a police investigation and conceal reality. Logan has a gift for drawing the reader into the story. I love books that have characters who are relatable, empathetic, and authentic. Joe, the lead character, was all of these things and more. While the ending was a bit Lifetime Movie-esque, I was captivated by all the scenes leading up to the finale. If you like novels that keep you guessing until the very last page, Lies is definitely for you.
Thank you to the author, TM Logan, and NetGalley for an advanced e-galley of Lies. I look forward to reading Logan's next book!
Lies is an amazing thriller that you will be completely unable to put down! When I first started it, I guess I wasn't in the mood for a thriller, so I set it aside for a while. When I picked it up again, I just couldn't stop reading it. It is very intense. I got so mad at the people who were doubting the character of the main suspect! This is a super hard book to review because I don't want to give anything away. It kept me guessing the entire time. I kept thinking I knew what was happening, and then I'd doubt myself. I was semi-correct, but I was shocked by the ending. This is a must read for fans of thrillers!
A cuckolded husband is blamed for the disappearance of his wife's lover. That is a tired plot line, but offered up in a very updated and modern digital forensic twist that will surprise and delight you in his journey to clear his name. I really enjoyed the various plot twists and the two families at the center of this mystery. Well written and well drawn characters and a very realistic set of circumstances -- especially for someone stepped in digital security -- also makes this book a great read.
Oh, how many lies lie within this novel! After the first deception revealed itself, could I ever trust Mel again? The author was adept at driving this compelling story with ratcheting tension and questionable character behaviors. I raced to get to the end, resisting the ever-present urge to flip ahead and sneak peek the ending. I did find the ending implausible but still, this was a good ride and worth my time spent.

I was very pleasantly surprised at this novel because for me it started of very slowly. I was looking to be bored and struggle to get through it. But it soon had be in it's grip and I was stuck til the very end. Bravo!
Psychological thriller with many twists and turns. Good summer/beach read. This kept my interest while reading but is a classic beach read in that it didn’t really stick with me afterward. Enjoyable read thanks to #netgalley for the chance to read #lies
Lies by T.M. Logan tells the story of a man who insists he is being framed for the murder of another man. Without giving anything away, the novel goes on for 400 pages of why this man is innocent and how it is a set-up. The police don't believe him, his lawyer seems to have given up on him, but he's convinced that he can prove his innocence. The end does involve a twist that I didn't see coming, but it didn't quite pay off.
The story dragged on a bit where the main character seemed to meander around, not picking up on clues that at the end, were seemingly obvious. The chapters ran together, and it didn't make a lot of sense when a chapter ended (as another one began continuing the conversation from the previous chapter).
Overall, the story kept my attention, but it did fall flat in a few areas. The main character should have picked up on some of the signs that were there, which was frustrating as a reader.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lies by T.M. Logan was quite the read. I really enjoyed even though I didn't care for any of the characters. Well, I fib. I liked Will. Typically if I can't find anything to like about characters, the book becomes a DNF (did not finish), but not this one.
The author set Joe up to be the one people cared about in this book, but in my opinion he was too much. Too good, too laid back, too naïve...I could go on.
All that said, the twists in this book weren't what I thought they would be and I was hooked. Even while I was muttering about jerks I was turning pages on my Kindle faster and faster.
This author definitely knows how to hook a reader and keep them involved. I'm very interested to see what the next novel of this author's is like. If you like a tightly plotted, fast moving psychological thriller, this is for you. It does mess with your head.
Lies by T M Logan is the story of Joe Lynch. This book worked to bring you into a suspenseful drama that you can't put down...for it did work. I found this to be a 'edge of your seat' type read just waiting for the next thing to happen.
Enjoy this book!
4.25 Stars* (rounded down)
Joe loves his son, his life and his wife and thinks his job as a school teacher is the bees knees. Unfortunately for him, his happy, peaceful existence comes crashing down with one simple act. Taking a little detour at the request of his son, who sees Mommy’s car on the road and wants to follow it, which of course, Joe does. Somehow, following his spouse seemed so innocuous at the time. Poor Joe, amateur mistake! What was he thinking?!
Thereafter, Joe can’t undo everything that has spiraled out of control since and boy is he in for a doozy, and so was I.
“Lies” is a mystery / suspense that will keep your head spinning faster than Linda Blair’s in the Exorcist. Be prepared to doubt everything and to enjoy the ride.
This was a buddy read with Kaceey!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and T.M. Logan for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Published on NetGalley, Goodreads and Twitter on 9.2.18.
This is my first book to read by this author. The blurb caught my attention because every once in a while I need a thriller book in between all of my romance and I am glad I picked this book up.
Told from the POV from the male perspective (which I LOVED), this is the story of Joe and what happens when his life unravels because of all the lies. All the lies, all the secrets, all the things in his life that he thought were true that were not.
I was immersed from the very first page and as you can see, I read this book in one sitting because I had to know the truths. Many times throughout my read, I thought I knew what was going to happen and was then surprised when the story went in another direction.
Overall I was intrigued, and I would most definitely read this author again. My only complaints is that the writing was a bit choppy at times and I wished for smoother transitions. Some parts of the story slowed down for me in the middle where I found myself skimming to get to the more suspenseful parts. Despite these things, I would read this author again to see what he has in store for readers next.
This was the perfect read in advance of going back to school this week! Suspenseful and exciting, I read it late into the night, relishing the suspense. The poor guy who is at the center of this novel – he could not catch a break. I thought I might have figured this one out, but all I’ll say (so I don’t spoil anything!) is that I was halfway correct.
This one will publish on 9/11/18. If you enjoy a fast and suspenseful read, don’t miss it!
Thank you for my review e-copy through Net Galley.
This is my first read from T.M. Logan and probably will not be my last. This book sucks you in from the first page until the last. Many twists and turns and an ending you would never guess. This was an excellent book that you just can’t put down.
A good psychological thriller showcasing how the misuse (Lies) of social media and technological hacking can quickly destroy someone’s life. Joe was just a regular guy, a good, faithful, loving husband and father, until one night when it all fell apart. His life and marriage were not at all what he had believed and loved for years. Yes, Joe is naive and you might have some strong suspicions along the way, but still a good page turner with the truth being slowly revealed to a just resolution.
Thank you NetGalley for the early review copy!
Lies was just that. A book filled with Lies, twists and turns.
Lies kept me captivated from the first page to the very last page. It was a true page turner. From the first line..."I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn't seen her car that day" to the last line "That's one lie I'll keep going as long as I can", I was flipping the pages to see what was going to happen next. It wasn't a heart racing, pulse pounding kind of feel, but more "how far will Joe and his family have to fall to get to the truth?"
I felt for Joe. Poor gullible and trusting Joe. He witnesses something that changes his life forever and almost ruins everything he has ever had. No matter how big or small his life feels, his family is a top priority and he always keeps it that way. That is very apparent from the first decision he has to make for his son William. He is a quiet and honest man and lives his life accordingly. When he sees his wife Mel having an encounter with their friend Ben who is married to their other friend Beth, his mind immediately goes to the worst. Wouldn't everyone's? But then he talks to Ben briefly and everything from there changes the course of his life and everyone in it.
The lies begin to start and they continuously unfold throughout the story. I wanted to believe so many lies just like Joe, but how can you when something more sinister is nagging at you? The lies pile up and you don't know which way the truth is going to fall. You are having to search for the truth in so many places that you shouldn't have to. Whoever is playing this game did a good job of covering their tracks.
This story kept me intrigued right from the beginning. Joe is a little clueless and that bothered me, but also made me excited that they put the man in the position of the helpless victim instead of the woman. A good role reversal in the thriller genre. But the women play a huge role in how they are perceived as the victims as well. The story kept at a good pace and built up to the twist quite well. The twist itself went down a little too quickly, but it was still done in a way that we got to hear all the lies and how they built up.
Lies may have seemed too obvious for a title, but it worked well with the story. I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for a psychological thriller. It's not perfect but it was written well and the characters played their parts well.
4.5 lie filled stars
I wasn't expecting such a tantalizing story! The hero seems so laidback and human, with great insights into parenting and relationships.
Then his whole life explodes. He is betrayed at every turn, and no one believes him about what really has happened.
Everything he believes comes into question, and he is forced to go outside his normal ways of trusting to find the truth. Despite his palpable fear and anger, he learns to think like his adversaries in order to protect his family.
This is extremely well-written. I found no editing mistakes, rare these days. I copied several passages I liked to share with others.
As a former English professor, I would cherish a writer like this. He has a talent for building suspense, and the ominous sense of disaster looming ramps up the intensity of the story. This in one of the best books I have been gifted on NetGalley!
I would like to thank the publisher, St Martin's Press and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this great psychological Thriller.
This book is one of those thriller that is very hard to put down. I read the book in two sittings. The story is told from the point of view of the faithful husband, Joe lynch. Joe is very devoted to hos son William and his wife Mel..
One day on the way home from school, William spots Mel's car and ask Dad if they can go and meet with her. Joe follows the car into an underground parking lot of a hotel. He enters the hotel looking for his wife and then he sees her sitting with a family friend in a agitated discussion. He immediately feels that something is not right but he does not approach them. He returns to the parking lot and observes Mel getting into her car and she seems very upset. Shortly after, he encounters Ben in the parking lot and a altercation ensues. This event leads to a complete destruction of his life as he has know it. One lie after another is uncovered and keeps the reader wanting to know more. The ending is so unexpected. Great read!
