Lies - what if you woke up one day and found out your entire life was built on lies. Dozens of them. And as soon as you find out about one, more and more start coming out of the woodwork. Who do you trust? How do you make your life go back to normal?
Joe Lynch is an average guy with an average life, until one day, he catches his wife Mel having a heated conversation with Ben, a family “friend” at a local hotel. The lies that follow throw Joe, Melissa and Ben’s lives in tailspin’s that you wouldn’t believe.
I personally found Joe’s character to be very...dim witted and because of this, I didn’t enjoy the book nearly as much. I also felt that it was similar to other books of this genre and very easily predictive.
Joe is married to Melissa "Mel" and they have a precocious 4-year-old boy named William "Wills." Joe is driving Wills home from school when Wills spots his mother's Volkswagen turning into a hotel parking garage. They decide to find her and say hello to her. Joe spots her with Ben, the husband of Mel's best friend Beth. They seem to be in a heated discussion so Ben and Wills leave and wait in the parking ramp to talk to Ben. Joe confronts Ben and it leads to an altercation with Ben falling, hitting his head on the cement and getting knocked out. Joe leaves and goes home and Ben is subsequently reported as missing by his wife. From there, the story takes on more twists and turns than a corkscrew with a surprise ending I would never had imagined. I thoroughly enjoyed this page turner and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the chance to read and review this novel.
Though I love reading, I often hate starting new books as it typically takes some time to get into the story and figure out the setting, characters, etc (I know, blasphemy), so when a book is able to grab me from the very first page I know I'm going to love it. It's always a relief to immediately find myself interested in what I'm reading and Lies was the epitome of easy, fast-paced reading.
I normally enjoy reading from the female perspective, because I'm obviously a female myself. However, I found this book to be a refreshing take on the male perspective. Oftentimes, the female characters are those being wronged in the domestic thrillers I read, the ones with the cheating spouse, and the ones being all-around victimized. It was intriguing to read this stance from the male point-of-view for a change! I was also quite pleased with the heartwarming father-son relationship depicted in the story, which only makes the reader root for the main character all the more.
This is the type of Thriller that makes readers question everything they're told in life, leaving everyone looking at suspiciously at those closest to them. One of my favorite things about reading this story was that I was able to have every question answered. Like every suspense novel or movie, I wanted to shout at the main character at times to follow through with the obvious choice to get him out of certain situations. Later in the novel, however, my questions would be answered as to why he didn't take the action I was internally shouting for him to. I greatly appreciated the author's attention to detail! I truly believe this novel stands in a league of its own and would make an exciting book-to-screen adaptation in the future.
Something I didn't notice until I was nearing the conclusion was that I had not tried even once to predict the ending as I was reading. I was completely immersed and if I would have wagered a guess about what would have happened, I would have been completely wrong. Lies was a whirlwind from beginning to end. I even dreamt about this book in relation to my own life during the night! It was ingrained in my subconscious, making me feel as anxious as the main character. This story was meticulously plotted, easy to follow, full of suspenseful questions, and was thoroughly unpredictable. If every novel in the genre could be as exciting as Lies I would be a pleased reader.

You need this one on your reading list!
When you have a title like Lies, you know from the start to not believe what is being told by the people/characters involved. But to try and read between the lines from whose are apart of the story.
Joe and his son Will, travel the same routes each and every day. But when the son see his Mums car, they decide to follow her and surprise her. But Joe is the one being surprised. His wife Mel, is not going to the place he thought she was going that time of day. He watches a confrontation between Mel and their friend Ben and it was heated conversation they were having. Of course, Joes mind going wild with so many ideas that might be why the two were arguing. And this is where lies start being told and piling up.
Questions are raised and asked. Lies are told. It’s up to Joe to piece them all together with all that happened that day is still going on. What was going on with Mel and Ben? Was it just work stuff? When Ben goes missing even more questions come to mind. Does it have anything to do with that day? So many questions and so many half truths being told, it was hard to tell who was telling the truth.
I have to admit, when I first started reading this I was a little worried. It started out a little too slow for me and I just despised Mel from the start. I did however want to root for Joe to pieces everything together. Now Beth who happens to be Ben’s wife, I just felt awful for her with his disappreance. She needed her friends and their help to get through all. It did end up being a cast of characters you don’t whether hate or root for though with the events that were taking place. The suspense built and built as the story progressed and the pace picked up immensely and I didn’t want to put it down.
With the questionable characters, the mounting lies, the suspense was fantastic all the way the way up until the end. The big twist that was revealed shocked me, I had it all wrong and I certainly didn’t see if coming. Being stumped with this type of read for me is a bonus. This is one amazing thriller and I think fans of the genre will devour it.
What a masterfully written tale! The characters were remarkably well done. It was hard to out this book down from start to finish, and it kept your mind thinking and puzzling it out throughout the entire read. I absolutely loved it and can't recommend it enough.
Joe is happily satisfied with his life, married with a young son. He finds out that his wife has a relationship with her best friend's husband and that she has lied and continues to lie to him about it. Things go from bad to worse for Joe as he finds himself caught up in an web of deceit as he is accused of murder.
This is a fast-paced thriller and the storyline is great throughout most of the books, although I found the ending unconvincing and written poorly - it felt very lazy of the author to reveal the truth in a James Bond style of 'you'll never escape with your life so I will confess to everything'. The truth revealed was a really good twist which I didn't see coming, so it was almost doubly disappointing.
I do recommend this book if you enjoy an action story. It's very much a page turner.
I received this book from netgalley.com as an ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this book i. This was a page turning book with a great story line. It all begins when a husband and his son spot his wife talking to her best friend's husband. The book is quite fascinating. From that point on the book is terrific. I couldn't put it down till I finished it. The name of the book is Lies and it is perfect for this book. Lies, lies and more lies to the husband Joe who finally figures out what is going on, but not till the very end of the book. The other reason I enjoyed this book so much is that it was a true psychological thriller with a twist ending that I never saw coming. I knew thatJoe was innocent but the ending was mind blowing. I highly recommend this book if you like this kind of genre which happens to be one of my favorite type of book. (less)
I had the pleasure to receive an ARC of this book. This will definitely make the fall must read list. It is definitely a book to read. Not only is it gripping from the first page it is also written up to date with the latest technologies and makes your mind wonder (and fear) that some of the things that happen could really happen. I got a feeling of what was going on early on in the book but kept reading because the book is written in a way were you want to know if your right. I was close to the truth but at the same time nowhere near the truth! This is a great weekend/snowed in read.
I give it 4 and 3/4th out of 5 stars because I wasn't expecting the conclusion.

Wow! I didn’t see that ending coming! A nice guy with a good, loving family starts out on a normal everyday morning. That was the last really normal thing to happen to him for quite some time. He reaches a point where he questions everything and nothing is normal anymore. Surprise and unexpected ending makes this a must-read book.
Read this book! I love thrillers and now there are so many it’s hard to know which ones are worth reading so I can assure you this one is. This book is impossible to out down. Our narrator Joe is a perfectly stand up guy who suddenly finds his life absolutely torn apart. He is the perfect narrator. He is sympathetic and will quickly win you over. That’s important because most of this book is really just his internal monologue. Lately most books seem to switch narrators and POV so it was a nice change to follow Joe and only know what he knows.
This book is kind of like the Fugitive with a lot less conflict. If Dr. Kimble were trying to clear himself without Tommy Lee Jones tracking him down because the police in this book are all bad cop and no good cop. Also if Harrison Ford had been a teacher instead of a doctor so with a lot less resources. Also with a lot less time on the run. Oh and instead of a wife he loved we have Mel the wife who lied. This book is also more about the setting up of a crime than the actual crime. If the evidence says you are a killer and no one believes you what do you do?
This book is fast paced and a great read. There were a few ways the plot could have gone. I happened to guess correctly but it could easily have gone in another direction. It made for a fun read trying to guess where it was going. I can’t wait to read more by this author. I do wish some unanswered questions had been cleared up a bit but the ending was full speed ahead so there was perhaps no time for that.
Joe Lynch is living a low-keyed life. He has a job as a teacher, a loving wife and a precocious son. As usual, he gets up, goes to work and retrieves his son for the ride home. But this time he sees something that jars his world. He unexpectedly sees his wife in an unusual location and in an odd situation. Joe cannot comprehend what he is seeing. When he later questions his wife a story unfolds that makes Joe question what he knows, whom he trusts and even who he is becoming. Social media is embedded in Joe’s journey that amps up psychological twists that are unpredictable. No one can be relied upon. This is a world, which Joe must navigate although he is very unprepared to confront adversaries and trust friends. This is a quick novel of suspense that goes down very odd pathways. Recommended.
Lies was a fast-paced psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. Although the main character irritated me at times with his actions (many that were unbelievable at times), I needed to get to the end to figure out exactly what was going on. This was a quick read, and I look forward to future books by this author.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I would rate this book 3.5 stars. I struggled a bit with getting into this book, but once I got to about 30% i HAD to know what was happening. I absolutely did not see the twist coming and it was so good and unexpected. I felt at times that things were drawn out and could have wrapped up a bit quicker, but for the sake of the story I understand why it was written how it was. If your looking for a book that keeps you guessing this is the one for you. Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's press for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.
While the book started out promising, at times it seemed like the plot was rushed and the ending was expected to me. I wish the book was longer so it didn’t seem like the ending was so rushed.
Lies kept me guessing the whole way through! There were twists and turns all over the place. I was definitely surprised by the ending. The characters were mostly well written. It was hard to tell at times which characters I liked and which I didn’t. Pretty much everyone but William seemed bad at some point. Joe got a little annoying in his stupidity and naiveté at times. Other than that I thought it was fantastic! Many chapters ended with mini cliff-hangers, which was good and bad. It’s good because it made me want to keep reading, but bad because sometimes I was up way too late to keep reading. It really kept my interest throughout.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.
Lies is a well written psychological thriller that will have you hooked from beginning to end.
What if your entire life was based on lies?
From reading the synopsis I was so excited to read this novel. It sounded so good and I have good news it is Good, really good in fact.
This novel starts off intense which starts of the lies, even more lies and betrayals between Joe Lynch, his wife and his friend.
The plot and the characters was so good. This is a fast paced and gripping novel that will have you flipping the pages and trying to find out how’s this story is going to end.
If you like psychological thrillers, you have to read this one.
This book was outstanding!!! I could not put this book down as it grabs you and pulls you in from the first page. The ending left me stunned! Loved it and can’t wait to read more by this author.
This is a good action packed psychological thriller full of romantic suspense. I found the plot to be rather complicated because there was too much happening to too many characters. If I had not read book #2 in the series, I would have been really lost. So, I suggest reading the preceding books before you tackle this one! I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review
What a twister! I was continually thinking I knew what was going on but then I’d be wrong.
This story is interesting and will have you in the edge of your seat as you’re trying to fight for the innocent, but are they really innocent?
Grab this book and get ready for a wild ride where nothing is as it seems and you can’t distinguish the truth from lies.
I thought the story line was an interesting concept, but I found it difficult to see the characters as believable. There was no depth in any of the relationships which I find important when I read a book. I found the main character whimpy, and maybe that is what the author tried to convey, but I also found the female characters just as weak. The story line was different and you wanted to continue to find out the outcome but I was just getting frustrated with the actual characters themselves. Thanks for the opportunity to review this book.
