Right from the start, “Lies” takes off at a fast clip, instantly pulling you into the story. Author T. M. Logan makes it easy to identify with the main character, Joe Lynch, and I found myself at his side as his world swiftly crashed all around him.
The characters are believable (for the most part…more on that later), heavily supported by the easy flow of the dialogue and the constant examination of everything via Joe’s thoughts. As each domino falls and Joe finds himself deeper and deeper in trouble, he must examine the world around him and search for answers. The larger issue, who can he trust and when, weaves itself in and out of the story. Every new revelation seems true, and might be true, but Joe can never be sure. As his support system of friends and family begins to fail and with the police considering him a prime suspect in a homicide, Joe must do his best to weed out the deceptions and discover the truth before it is too late.
Other characters are developed enough to give them life, thus helping to continually move the story forward. Even when the story slows a couple times in the middle, the dialogue is always pushing everything, and it is easy to feel the tension lurking underneath.
The only issue I had with the story was the inconsistency of one of the characters. There were a few instances when I felt this character didn’t react as I expected, based upon previous actions and descriptions in the story. Where I felt the author performed best was the intricate plot. Everything tied up neatly at the end and made sense, including the unexpected twist.
This is an extremely well-constructed tale that puts you on the edge of your seat and keeps you up until all hours of the morning. While Joe Lynch is not the strongest main character you will ever accompany, I felt he was a good presentation of “everyman,” thus making it easier for me to empathize with his experiences. Good writing, realistic dialogue, and a convincing plot. Four-and-a-half stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a complimentary copy of this book.
I love this book! I could not put it down! Omg Joe’s seemingly perfect life comes crashing down on him in an instant. He sees something he shouldn’t and does something he shouldn’t and it’s all downhill from here! He’s an amazing dad and devoted husband. I really think readers should go into this blind! I did figure out the ending but it didn’t keep me from reading! I was completely enthralled and started and finished this in a day! I just had to know what was going to happen to Joe!
A marvelous thriller and my first T.M. Logan novel and I can’t wait to read more by this author. I was captured into the story in the first chapter. I thought I knew what was going to happen to Joe Lynch but boy was I wrong. Makes you wonder what lies have been told to you.
Lies by T.M. Logan got me from the very first chapter. Makes you question how well you know someone. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, he brought in an extra twist. Great book. I would highly recommend to friends. Thank you NetGalley
What if your whole life was nothing but lies. It seems that Joe Lynch and his wife have been living with lies for a long time. Joe and his son, William, are driving home when his son spots his mother’s car. William wants to say hello to his mother so Joe follows her to surprise her.
Things escalate from there when Joe sees his wife having what appears to be an argument with Ben Delaney. When Ben exits into the parking lot he and Joe get into a physical fight. Joe leaves Ben hurt on the ground because at the same moment William experiences an asthma attack and Joe leaves to get his inhaler. Upon returning, Joe finds that Ben is gone along with Joe’s cell phone that he dropped during the fight.
This incident is the beginning of the lies. Following this event, Joe finds that he is embroiled in a tangle of falsehoods that seem to have no end. He thought he and Melissa had a good marriage but he finds that to be a lie as well. Technology even finds a place in perpetuating the lies as Joe finds himself continuously outsmarted by messages that come both by phone and on the computer.
The book takes an ordinary guy and puts him in a bad situation. He acts on impulse and gets himself in trouble. And because he really cares about his family he puts himself into jeopardy multiple times.
This mystery thriller grabs you from the beginning because your need to discover the truth will keep you reading. Every time you think you have solved a piece of the puzzle you find that another piece is in the wrong place.
The novel also brings awareness to how vulnerable we are to social media. The author integrates technology into the plot to show that what others and we deem to share on the internet could become our undoing.
The book leaves the reader guessing until the final pages. The ending was totally unexpected with quite a plot twist making it a book I would recommend you put on your reading list.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book.
I was excited to have the opportunity to obtain an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book on NetGalley.
Nothing makes school teacher Joe happier than the life he’s built with his young son, William, and his wife of ten years, Melissa. Until one day William spots his mummy’s car and Joe is compelled to follow. The violent confrontation that occurs as a result of Joe’s spur-of-the-minute choice has ramifications that have him desperate to clear his name and questioning every piece of his perfect life.
The thing I like most about this story is how the author uses social media and technology to add layers to the mystery, to implicate Joe, and to make the reader wonder whether or not Joe, the quintessential likable protagonist, is himself a liar. As he gets in deeper and deeper trouble, his desperation forces him to make choices that are in opposition to his character. Yet always, his number one instinct is to protect his child.
The author kept me guessing until the big reveal at the end. The short chapters effectively kept the pacing quick and held my interest. The UK setting gave the book an exotic feel.
LIES shows how easily people can be manipulated by social media and technology, turning lies into what appear to be truths. Joe’s the kind of protagonist a reader can’t help to root for even when his actions are called into question.
Lies by T.M. Logan was everything I needed this book to be. Superb pacing, tense, and suspenseful. Joe, is a great guy, an English teacher, married to the love of his life Melissa and together they have a a 4 year old son. It is during a car ride with his son that he sees what he thinks is his wife’s car. At his son’s request they decide to follow Mel and surprise her. But when they arrive at their destination Joe is the one who is surprised. Why has his wife gone to a hotel? Following the trail and breadcrumbs which Mel so skillfully scatters for him leads Joe on a harrowing journey where he can’t trust anyone or anything. Thoroughly enjoyable and a satisfying read from start to finish. Thank you to netgalley for my arc.
WHAT IF YOUR WHOLE LIFE WAS BASED ON LIES?
What if you have the perfect life, the perfect wife and the perfect child, and then in one moment everything changes and your whole life is based on lies? This is what happened to Joe Lynch the main character. Joe is such a likeable character and could be any one of us. This is a book that I could not put down. This psychological thriller is a real page turner ! This book took me on a roller coaster ride. The people in this book could be your neighbors.
I read this book in 1.5 days because I just couldn't put it down. There was so much suspicion, half-truths and deception it was hard to know what would happen next. The ending was fabulous!
This does NOT reveal any spoilers, but a quote that really rang true to me at the end of the book regarding social media and our societies addiction to our phones:
"I feel calmer, clearer, more focused on what's important. I've avoided social media completely...gone cold turkey on my generation's compulsion to share every event, every emotion, every success, every random thought, every half-funny conversation. Because it's not the photographing and sharing and broadcasting that makes something what it is. It's the doing. The being. The experience of it."
We all could learn from Joe Lynch. Thank you T.M. Logan for a great book that I will not soon forget.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an impartial review.
Lies portrays a marriage gone awry. Joe is madly in love with his wife, Mel, and their son, Will, is the center of his universe. Joe is a teacher content with a lack of advancement as he takes on the brunt of the childcare while his wife has a demanding time-consuming job. In reality, he has little idea of what is going on. When suddenly faced with potential arrest, Joe must determine the truth of what his marriage has become.
Characters in this mystery spend a tremendous amount of time on Facebook, a social media platform that I have never cared for. It appears as if characters need their phones to advance or explain relationships. Inevitably, out-of-context messages and pictures come together to expose a truth that Joe really doesn't want to know.
I would definitely read more of Logan's books. This was a quick read that kept my interest throughout. I did not see the twist until very close to the end, which is always a nice surprise. I found the plot unfeasible at times but once I got to the resolution, it all came together and made sense, which makes for a very satisfying read.
I'd recommend this for fans of Shari Lapena and B.A. Paris.
It may be that I'm just maxed out on thrillers lately, but I found this one so ho-hum that I probably only read about one in ten sentences, skimming madly just to see how it ended. So much of the book seemed to consist of the protagonist mulling over the implications of every incident, who done it, how it might look to others, and how he felt about it.
A quick light read, but nothing memorable.
(With thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press who provided an ARC in return for an unbiased review.)
This book was so good that I would give it ten stars if I could! The pace is quick and attention-getting with short chapters that draw you into the story right away. Joe thinks that he is happily married until he comes across Ben Delaney in a parking garage. Then his whole life changes and his world begins to collapse around him. Suspected of murder, Joe careens around wildly from place to place and person to person trying to prove his own innocence. Joe, or course, is the main character around whom the entire novel revolves. He is a school teacher who also is the main caretaker for William, a precocious four year old. The entire story is so believable and absorbing that you want to just help Joe out of his predicament, but you don’t know how that is possible either. The ending is absolutely twisted and breath-taking, and I assure you that you will not see it coming! This book releases on September 11th and I predict huge sales because it is astoundingly well-written. It is a spider web of a book that will pull you in and will not let you go!
Lies tells a story about Joe discovering that his wife, Mel, is having an affair with her best friend's husband, Ben, when one day his son notices his wife's blue VW Golf on the way home. He finds out that she was meeting Ben in a hotel and confronts Ben about it as he walking to the car in the underground parking lot.. Things got a little heated and Ben accidentally trip on his bag, fell backwards and hit his head on the floor. Unfortunately, his son got out of the car and saw Ben on the ground causing an asthma attack to hit him. Joe making a choice to save his son first, drove straight home to give him an inhaler as there was none to be found at hand. Upon returning to the parking lot afterwards, Joe finds that Ben is no longer there and concludes that he might have gone home and was alright. But it was discovered that Ben was missing and a police report was made by Ben's wife, Beth, Mel & Joe. However, Joe starts to receive messages that had to be from Ben threatening to tear his family apart sending him incriminating pictures of his wife taking naked selfies for his pleasure. Joe then discovers a stream of lies from his wife and further tumbling into a murder case of Ben with him as the suspect. His life turns into a whirlwind as he tries to stay afloat the situation, gathering evidence to clear his name but only to cause him to be a greater suspect.
At first, I thought the plot to be beating about the bush but I realise later that it was completely necessary to establish how dreadful the situation was. It was a gradual build to the climax which was towards the end when the whole event began to unfold itself to all the lies and conspiracy. It was a frustrating journey at the start seeing how stupid Joe could be sometimes but it got more and more exciting as it was nearing the climax.
The characters were well portrayed, showing their personality in detail. There were no loopholes and situations in the story that were left unexplained. The best part of the book was the unexpected plot twist at the end revealing the true nature of events. I would definitely recommend this book to those who can stand the suspense and enjoy the thrill of a wrong suspect enduring the ever growing dark conspiracy against him.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
4.5 Stars
This was my first T.M. Logan book and I really enjoyed it. I loved the writing and I was kept guessing up until the end when the surprising twist happened!!! I love when I can't completely figure out a twist in a book. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters in the book and most of all I really grew to like Joe.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves psychological thrillers!!
Very intriguing book with twists and of course, a surprise at the end. I was frustrated by the main character and something didn't quite make sense about him being such a good guy and yet getting into that whole situation. Overall, would definitely recommend!
Very good read! From the beginning it keeps you guessing. Whenever you think your getting a handle on where the book is heading--it takes a turn in another direction. Very enjoyable and you can feel for the accused plight. Until the last few pages you are kept guessing. Just an enjoyable read.
If you like Gone Girl, you'll love this thriller. Legit had my heart racing to where I couldn't sleep at night and had to finish the next chapter!
Psychological thriller about seemingly happy family of Joe, his wife Mel, and young son William. One day driving home, William sees a car that looks like his mom's and Joe follows it.....and it is her (not at work where she is supposed to be) but ending up in a garage having a fight with a close friend that Joe observes. She leaves and Joe decides to talk to Ben (the friend) which does not go well. Ben disappears and the story takes off from there, lie after lie, a new twist with each. Interesting story and good writing, but nothing new for me as far as thrillers go, heavy concentration on social media and how modern technology has such an impact on a person's daily life. Worth reading for the fast pace and ending. I did think it was a little TOO long though!
What a ride T. M. Logan takes you on in this novel. I was hooked from the beginning and wanted to read the whole thing but unfortunately, I had to stop a few times. This book will make you wish you did not have any other obligations and could just on the beach reading it. Joe Lynch is an ordinary guy who one day while driving sees his friends car with his wife inside with him. Not sure at first what to make of it, Joe decides that he needs to see what is going on and when he finds out, all he’ll breaks loose. Joe is wanted for murder and the story at this point takes you around a lot of bends with an articulate and imaginative writer. As I do not want to spoil the story for you, I will just say that I love mysteries and The Whodunnit type novels so this one was right up my alley. I want to read more by this author and I sure hope that this book gets in the hands of a lot of people. It is an amazing story.
Thanks to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for the chance to read this novel in exchange for my honest review.
5 out of 5 for this one!
Joe Lynch is blissfully happy with his life. He has a wonderful wife and son, a job he loves and the opportunity to spend more time with his family.
Then, Joe sees his wife entering a parking garage and chooses to follow her. After witnessing her arguing with another man, he makes a decision that will have serious repercussions.
I found Joe incredibly likeable, but very gullible. That did not detract from the book, as I found myself anxious to find out what would happen to him. I enjoy psychological suspense and thrillers and this one definitely had me hooked.
