Lies by T. M. Logan is such a wild ride. I don't often stay up all night to read, but the frantic wild pace of this story kept me up - in a good way! I loved the extreme to the next extreme in this story of a man, a school teacher, who get's caught up in lies, not by him but by everyone surrounding him. His life, his wife, and best friend are lies. I loved this book and the awesome ending, never saw that coming! Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press!
You will not want to put this book down!! There are parts where the story doesn't seem to move along, but it's totally worth it at the end. Be ready for an unexpected ending!!!
A fast-paced interesting book that kept me wondering until the very end. Enjoyed it very much. I loved the cover and the description of the book as it made you want to dive right in to meet the characters and see what the story was really about.
Read it in one sitting, even though I did not plan to. It was that good! This was a true cliffhanger from the first page to the last paragraph and I am not on the search for other works by the author.
T.M. Logan's debut, Lies, is very much a guy's mystery novel. The trappings of current tech are used to drive a straightforward pulse-pounder of a thriller. It's a no frills, quick and engaging read.
That said, when I choose a novel, I hope for great characters and a well-constructed plot, but I also like to enjoy an artful turn of phrase, and that's where this novel left me wanting. The dialogue was adequate, but the character development and atmosphere were very basic, taking a back seat to the breakneck plot. As well, there were no insights, no enlightening tangents, no creative and spot-on phrases to make you stop, nod and go "Oh wow, yeah!"
Driving a story to the end in a compelling way certainly takes persistence and talent, but what elevates good writing to gifted is how it also enlightens the reader along the way. There's the story, and then there's also the "something" the writer wants to convey. I didn't feel that T.M. Logan really had anything to say, and that is why you see so many reviewers saying they really liked the novel but are only giving it three-stars.
Lies may make a great beach read or made-for-TV movie, but I can't imagine anyone is going to read this and say, "Now that's a great piece of literature" or "that really got me thinking". It's simply a delicious piece of mind candy.
Great, twisting and turning plot. Very well done and great surprises! Also - a darling little boy who is the innocent catalyst.
Very taut story, well written and absorbing. Fast paced. Very entertaining. I will look for more from this very good author!
"Lies", the debut book by novelist T. M. Logan, is a great initial offering to the reading public. It's both a page turner and a suspense novel. You won't go wrong reading this one. My only confusion is why its aggregate rating is 3.98. Come on readers! Give this guy a break!
Looking at some of the reviews, they seem to indicate a 4.5 is deserved. I'll agree with that assessment, but unlike my peers I'll bump his maiden voyage to a solid 5.0. "Lies" is one of those books that has you changing your mind at least a half dozen times. The ultimate question is "Exactly who is telling the lies?" I'm not about to spoil it. Read this book and see when you put the pieces together. It's a fun read.
This book has everything I love in psychological thrillers. Suspense. Excitement. Intrigue. The author practically dares you to ask yourself, how well do you know someone that's been in your life for years; someone you interact with on a day-to-day basis. And what if that someone was your spouse? The story flowed naturally and easily. Towards the end, I was conflicted. I was at the edge of my seat, couldn't wait to find out how it ended. At the same time, I was filled with dread knowing it was coming to an end.
Wow, this book is intense. What a twist at the end. Joe having words with Ben, thinking Been was involved with Joe's wife Mel. Then Ben's disappearance and Joe under suspicion for it. I couldn't put this book down. If you like suspense you will love this book.
Semi-predictable murder mystery plotline, wife cheating on hubby, hubby kills lover. Narrative in the book shows he is being framed. The main protagonist is a loyal and trusting to a fault husband, even when events blatantly showing him otherwise. To me, this overblown sense of trust and loyalty just doesn't allow me to suspend my disbelief. I found myself ranting at the protagonist to just stop, think, look at things with a clear eye. Especially when the many lies keep coming out. The reader is left with a couple of reveals at the end that would have given a major clue to the case. One fairly early on noticed by the protagonist in a series of photos supposedly found on the supposed victims phone that the husband sees and makes a passing remark about but no details. The same thing occurs when he makes contact with an old classmate of his wife, supposedly about gathering memories for their upcoming 10th anniversary, about a drunken after play cast party game of a "did you ever" where the question was did you ever cheat on your significant other and what happened. The classmates story was couched behind a number of "You really don't want to hear this mate, it's bloody embarrassing. - I'm sure she wouldn't want anyone to hear about it" and so on. The husband insists, annnd cut away to another scene. The knowledge of this phone call, along with the photo evidence would have made any person with reasonable intelligence call the detective in charge along with your lawyer (from a payphone or a new burner cell since he found out his cell has been malwared) and report everything, tell them you will be turning yourself in at the location you are being led to the slaughter. Giving them enough time to respond. Then let forensics take over.
This book was a bit of a let down for me. It was well paced and the story was intriguing, yet the writing was stiff and perfunctory. In a world of a lot of thrillers, this one did not stand out.
OMG! I absolutely devoured this book, I can’t say enough good things. I always figure out whodunnit... NOT this time. Which was such a trill to me. 5 starts read all the way!
Definitely a book that stays with you! Could not put it down!
Highly recommended if you enjoy suspense genre! Thank you for my review copy, which I received through Net Galley.
A five star read from start to finish with so many great plot twists and turns - highly recommended!
Absolutely loved this book, great writer. Kept me up all night, couldn't turn the pages quick enough. Kept me guessing all the way through. Did not expect the twist at the end. Thanks Netgalley
Joe Lynch thought he had great life - a wife and young son. In one week everything he thought he knew will be shattered. Plenty of taut suspense in this book....I felt I couldn’t read fast enough during some parts.
There are times you’ll want to slap Joe for his naïveté. But I guess if I were thrown into this situation I’d be a little slow on the uptake also. I thought I had the ending figured out - I was wrong. Great thriller!
This book was full of twists and turns. It did drag some in the middle of the story but picked back up quickly. I did not really like the characters but had to keep reading to see what was going to happen. I was really shocked at the ending. I did not see that coming at all. I would recommend this book to readers of psychological thrillers
When Joe's son spots his mother's car on the way home and they make the decision to follow her, what happens next tears their lives apart. One thing I would say though, is that for me the blurb gives a little too much away. For part of the novel I was beginning to think that Joe might actually be the killer. He could have forgotten what he'd done out of the trauma of the situation. If I'd remembered what the blurb said before I started reading, then I would have lost that dynamic.
Logan has an impressive ability to create believable characters. Lies made a great change from the recent trend of novels with unreliable often substance abusing female narrators. Having a male protagonist felt like a breath of fresh air. The relationship between Joe and his son William was lovely and added a touch of realism to a genre that features characters often lacking in meaningful connections.
Lies was a joy to read. Fast paced, with twists and turns I wouldn't have expected at the start. The conclusion was very unexpected, but all the clues are laid down in time that you might be able to spot the track the story is heading down (if you're more perceptive than I am!). I guessed only part of the solution to the 'what happened to Ben' mystery and I had the motives completely wrong.
The integration of social media into the story was a great touch, making the world of Lies feel like real life. After all, everyone knows people who've been caught out by social media.
For me the only real negative about the story was something relatively small. I'm from relatively close to where the character Ben is from and there were a few geographical details that struck me as a little off and pulled me out of the story slightly. For people not from the area though, those would have been completely unnoticeable. Overall, the settings felt very believable too.
I was really rooting for Joe throughout Lies and I'd really recommend giving it a read to find out whether he manages to clear his name!
Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book.
Wow. Just wow. That was unexpectedly good. I am not a fan of mysterious or thrillers because I like the clear cut details and I fear the unknown. It started off slow, but progressed in a great way. You will never expect whodunnit in this one. What a great story T.M. Logan has shared with us. The build up, the letdown, it was everything a book should be. I am a fan. I am so glad and thankful that I gave this book a chance. Give a chance with an iced cold glass of scotch.
