Amazing! I couldn’t put it down! It drew my attention from the first page and kept it until the last. A true page turner every step of the way.
The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)
4.5 stars. I got hooked on this around the 30% mark and didn't stop until I finished. The writing was done really well and I did not see the twist coming at the end! Great read.
Dumb. I did not like this book and I really wanted to. It bored me from the beginning and never picked up. I know psychological thrillers are popular but I'm not sure I would call this that. I'm sorry but I do not recommend this book.
A great suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns. Unique plot with a well developed main character.
This is a great book of mystery and family dynamics. I was shocked by who the perpetrator was in this book. I can't explain that much or I will give it away. But, this book did a great job keeping my interest and keeping me guessing along the way. I highly recommend this book.
I recommend checking out this new thriller. It has a interesting plot and is well-written. I will be checking out more from this author in the future!
This is an entertaining psychological thriller. It was a fast read and it kept my interest. I didn't have difficulty suspending my disbelief and found the plot has enough twists to make it suspenseful and intriguing.
What really makes this work is the first person narrative and the believability of the protagonist, Joe Lynch. I found him likable and relatable. What makes this different and fresh from similar books is that it is told from a male perspective and he is an average citizen.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC.
Joe Lynch is married to Mel and they have a young son, William. He is a happy man. That changes when he's driving William home and sees his wife in what is obviously a heated argument with family friend Ben. Mel runs off, but Joe ends up in a row with Ben, leaving him unconscious on the ground.
As William has a serious asthma attack, Ben needs to leave immediately to seek help. To his relief, when he goes back to check up on Ben, he and his car are gone. But now the nightmare really starts ... threatening emails and texts from Ben promising to take everything good from his life make Joe's life a misery. Then Mel visits informing Joe that Ben has gone missing and that she made a terrible mistake regarding Ben.
This is a good psychological thriller, but Joe comes across as a weak character; it detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I wanted to slap some sense into him. There are some very good, tense scenes, but it really bothered me that Joe didn't kick Mel to the curb,.. Social media pays a big part in the story, which is believable, but Joe's arrest for murder (with no body) and the subsequent investigation seemed a bit farfetched.
But the ending is terrific and I can see why the book got so many 5 star reviews. My irritation with Joe got in the way though, so my rating is 3.5 stars.
I almost gave up on this book because I found the beginning rather slow, but so very glad that I kept on reading. This thriller is quite riveting and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very unexpected end. Joe is a happily married man with a young child. They are out driving when his son William spots his mother's car. They want to show her a certificate that William has just got, so follow her car. Joe is then devastated when he sees his wife with another man and that is when Joe's life takes a turn he never saw coming and he finds himself a suspect in a murder. How could all this happen to him so quickly. How can one be so content and then in a matter of days, have your whole world turned upside down. For a first book, this is a great novel and I look forward to reading more from this author. I thank the publisher and Netgalley for giving me an ARC for my honestvreview.
I received this book as an ARC from #NetGalley. This is one of the best books that I’ve read in ages! I did not see the end coming. Marriage is tricky, lying makes it trickier. Joe and Mel have been together for 10 years, Joe is a great dad and after seeing Mel’s car, follows her to a parking garage. After beating up Ben, Joe’s life goes crazy. Ben can’t be found, Joe is slammed on social media, loses his job, and tries to get his life back. All the time wondering, as is the reader, whether or not he can trust Mel.
Wow, what a great book! It's a page turning psychological thriller. One you will not want to put down! I definitely look forward to reading more from this author!
Firstly thank you so much to Net galley for this free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this story for a few reasons, the first and main one was SO many twists. I just love when you can predict and ending and i really didnt call this one. Secondly, it is set in the UK and thats a rarity in thrillers so for me it was much more relatable and thirdly and most importantly i just love mystery type thrillers!
Ok, so this story follows Joe and Mel lynch a seemingly happily married couple that share a 4 year old boy together. When Joe walks in on his wife arguing with Ben Delaney who is Mels best friends husband the seeds of doubt form in Joes mind and he sets out to uncover the truth. When Ben goes missing Joe is prime suspect in his disappearance and must uncover the truth before the police arrest him for something he didnt do.
Bens wife Beth and 14 year old daughter Alice are also good side characters, i usually find side characters in books a bit meh but these 2 were introduced well and added to the plot without taking it over.
I found that the story had a nice flow to it and was a really fast read, it was descriptive which i like and the story was believable. Sometimes thrillers can be a bit outlandish and take the twists too far but in this book they were subtle and it was nice to see the story develop chapter by chapter!
It took me exactly half way through the book before it started getting interesting. I found the added character of the little boy somewhat annoying and felt that the author could have handled his character better. The Childish talking then the explanation of the father, the explaining in full detail how he liked to play with his cars did not add to the book but detracted and I felt the author was trying to fill in space to make the book longer than it needed to be. The ending was great but that's about all I enjoyed from the book.
'Lies was a good read, a thriller on the lines of Gone girl . The story is entirely told from the male protagonist's view.(Joe Lynch). His interactions with his 4 year old son were heart warming. I felt the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more and the situations more taut and thrilling. Still never saw the end coming. The writer has a simple style and language. The stand out feature is this book shows how technology and social media can influence lives today and the damages they can do. Based on this fact I was expecting the story to go a different way and perplexed the police could not find the bad guys themselves. The plot wasn't 100% realistic in some places, yet makes for a good summer read.👍
I did not enjoy this book.
Joe is an average man living an extremely average life with his wife, Melissa, and young son, William. One day, while he's going through his day of average things he sees his wife heading into the parking lot of a local hotel. He follows her and finds her having a heated conversation with a male "friend" of theirs, Ben. After she leaves, Joe finds himself arguing with Ben which quickly leads to a short fight between the two men and Ben is knocked unconscious. Before Joe can even fully get a grip on the situation, William has an asthma attack and they have to leave to go get his inhaler.
When Joe gets back to the parking lot to make sure that Ben is okay, he finds the parking lot empty. Ben is gone and so is Joe's average life. There are several turn of events as the truth unfolds. But pretty much everything Joe believes to be true is a lie.
I went into this book excited from all the things I had read about it but I found the story to be too unbelievable. There wasn't enough support throughout the book to make me fully believe what was going on. I was so annoyed with the predictability as well. I kept guessing what was going to happen next and it bothered me that I was right each and every time.
The characters weren't likable for me either. I didn't like Melissa from the beginning. I tried to give Joe the benefit of the doubt through the entire book but he was just so stupid and naïve. I think that's what really made this hard to read for me. The story is told from his perspective and all I kept thinking was "seriously?" "he really believes this?" "OMG I can't with him". He drove me nuts with all the dumb mistakes he made throughout the book.
It took me a long time to read this and it just felt long and drawn out and farfetched and so on and so forth. Part of me didn't even want to finish this book but I wanted to see if maybe the ending held something that I wouldn't see coming and at least give me a good surprise for all of this predictability I had just read but sadly no........*sigh* the ending was just as lacking as the rest of the book for me.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ecopy in exchange for an honest review. I loved the premise behind the book. It was a great idea in theory and truthfully in execution it was well done. These psychological thrillers can sometimes fall flat, this one did not, the ending was an interesting twist. I liked the fact that it was first person, present tense, one point of view... it ramped up the intensity factor. However, it could have done with a stiffer edit and a solid proofreading as it did kind of drag in the middle and there were some errors. All in all, I'd give it 3.5 stars.
Wow! Wild ride of a book. This book grabbed me from the first page. Joe's life changes when he sees his wife pull into a parking garage on his way home from work. As Joe’s life spirals out of control he has no idea who he can trust, if anyone. While trying to protect his young son he tries to piece together his life that is inexplicablely falling apart due to no fault of his own. Tense, suspenseful read. This is the type of book that makes me love to read. Highly recommended.
This was a pretty good thriller. Joe Lynch accidentally stumbles upon a surprising confrontation involving his wife. He soon realizes that nothing in his life is what it seems and that he can't really trust anyone. Joe is a sympathetic character that was occasionally a little too naïve, but the twists kept me wondering through the end.
This mystery started off a little slow, but by halfway in I was hooked. I loved how the author ended so many chapters with a cliff hanger, really made me need to keep reading! The final twist surprised me too. Just when I thought I had it all figured out. An exciting vacation read!
"Lies" was a definite page-turner. It held my interest from beginning to end, and it had plenty of twists that I certainly didn't see coming. Joe is a very likable character, perhaps a bit naive. His life as he knows it is about to change when he accidentally spots his wife in a motel when she is supposed to be elsewhere. What follows is a series of lies, and Joe's life starts to unravel.
This was a fun read, but certainly required some suspension of disbelief. There were some aspects of the story and the conclusion that I just didn't find believable at all. However, I found it impossible to put down and I will look for other books by this author.
