Great thrilling novel which kept me turning the pages, would highly recommend to others. Brilliant writing, plot and characters.
Cass Raines, former cop, new Private investigator begins to rethink the new career when she stumbles upon the body of a community leader. Gripping and fast paced, readers will be anxious to get to the end.
Cass's voice is fantastic, intelligent and perceptive. This is an exciting, well-plotted mystery with an heroic woman of color as the strong female crime fighter.
I've gotten so used to read cozy mysteries it was a drastic change to read a gritty thriller for once. Cass is a jaded ex cop turned private eye after almost losing her life due to an ex colleague's error. She's experienced a lot of loss over the years making her most recently on difficult to handle. She doesn't trust Chicago PD to properly handle the investigation. We follow her through her journey to uncover her beloved pop's killer which becomes somewhat of an obsession for her.
This was an interesting read with proper focus on our protagonist actively pursuing her case. The action was very entertaining and was written in a way that made it easy to picture what was happening. However the cast was very large and it was hard to keep up with who was who.
I would like to see a little bit more happiness in Cass' life because at times it felt like she was all alone in her world. There was not a fair balance to offset the extreme sides of her personality. The bit with her father offered some much needed humanism as even though she spoke of her love for Pop she was so wrapped up in the case at times it felt like she was going through the motions.
I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun and entertaining read. Since it is the first in a series, I am anxious to see what happens next!
This fast-paced, action-packed drama pulled me in immediately, especially the opening scenes where I had to know what was going to happen next. The outcome of that intense situation spurs the consequences of where it takes our heroine in this forthcoming novel. I like Cass Raines and the author portrays her in a way that makes me feel sorry for her, but also, I want to tell her to buck up and do what you have to do to survive, make it on your own and enjoy what life has to offer. Hard when one runs a one-woman private investigation firm and take on a personal case when her beloved priest is murdered. Taking on her arch enemy, we watch Cass traverse the line between being an ex-cop having to tow the line and not having to tow the line and that’s where this riveting drama takes hold and I’m along for a grippingly wonderful ride that I did not want to get off.
The author does a great job in the development of this multi-faceted tome and the main characters. She gives us just enough to set the stage in this well-written mystery with visually descriptive narrative that put me in the middle of all the action. The past seems to converge on the present and that gave this intensifying and intriguing tale enough meat to keep me enthralled as I had to know how this will end. With plenty of potential suspects, it was the clues that the author planted that kept me following along with Cass as the closer she got, the more involved I’ve became as the reader, and when the pieces fell into place, there was only one person left standing. What a great book and I look forward to more exploits with Cass and her circle of friends.
Thank for the opportunity to read Broken Places, the new novel by Tracy Clark. I am trying to read more diversely, which is why this title caught my eye. The characters are well-developed, the dialogue seems realistic, and the pace of the novel is such that the reader will want to keep turning the pages. I didn't always think the main character was making the best choices, but that does provide good conflict in a story. Broken Places is the first book in a projected series, and hopefully readers will want to read more about Cass Raines.
Finished Broken Places by Tracy Clark in record time and it's FABULOUS. Super layered, so much happening! I love the main character and her backstory (and I love to hate her nemesis ). Most of all, I didn't guess the ending! I inquired with the author as to if this book is a series and it IS! The next book isn't coming until 2019, so savor this one. Such a pleasure to read another voice in black female crime fiction!
The story is straight forward but lack something. I can't put my finger on it but this book doesn't quite fulfill my expectations. It is the first in the beginning of a series and it takes times to find the authors voice.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advance copy.
Cass Raines quit the police force and opened her own PI firm. When the only Father figure she knew, Father Ray Heaton, is murdered in his own church, Cass is determined to get justice for him. Unfortunately the officer heading the case is one she has had problems with before. He is ready to write it off as a suicide but Cass knows better.
This is the start of a new series and I hope to continue reading more about Cass. Cass is a take no prisoners investigator. She isn’t afraid to step on peoples toes to find out what she needs to know. This was a good mystery that I would recommend to other readers. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy of this book.
I will start by saying this felt like it should be book 2...I can't pinpoint why but it didn't feel like the first book in a series and I did feel like i was missing parts of the main character Cass Raines.
Overall it's a good story and the start of what I expect will be a good series. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes it and how Cass evolves.
