A delightful cozy mystery. The perfect length. Enough daily interaction and activities to make it interesting without all the minute details that usually seem to be word filler to me. Interesting back stories on some of the familiar characters. This novella can be read as a standalone. For those of us familiar with the series it is a pleasant return to this charming small town. Eager for #10.

South Cove’s businesses are upset after volunteer fire chief Barry Gleason threatens to shut down anyone who doesn't fix any fire code violations he sites them for even some that he has made up. When Barry schedules a training burn in an old abandoned barn, he's the only one who doesn't come out alive. Jill Gardner the owner of Coffee, Books, and More smells murder in the ashes. <br /><br />Even though this was a novella it didn't leave out anything that you get from the regular books of the series. We get a well written mystery full of twists and turns and a surprising conclusion. All the characters are well developed and well written it feels like you're just dropping by for a quick visit with some old friends. I like that Jill's boyfriend Greg who is the police chief doesn't get to mad at her for investigating like he does in some of the other books. I also liked that Greg let Jill explain her theory of who the murderer was and how they had committed the crime instead of ignoring her and her theory.<br /><br />I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and Kensington Books for my honest review of the book.

It is always fun to return to South Cove, California and visit Jill, local coffee shop/book store owner and her friends. She has the perfect job in my opinion. As the story opens, the local business shop owners are meeting for their monthly Business-to-Business meeting at Coffee, Books, and More. The volunteer fire chief, Barry Gleason, is the guest speaker and is dropping the bomb that he is stepping up the enforcement of violations of fire infractions. With the upcoming Fourth of July celebration coming up, he is threatening to shut down any business that is in violation. Needless to say, he is not very popular with the business owners but when he is found dead within a day or so, everyone is surprised. Jill kicks in her investigating skills to try to see who might have killed Barry. There are three main suspects, all volunteer firemen working a control burn with Barry, who had the opportunity. As usual, Greg King, police chief and Jill's boyfriend, tries to rein in Jill's investigation but she is hard to control. This mystery has a little twist at the end.
This is another fun cozy mystery where we get to see old friends and hold our breath that Jill stays out of too much trouble. I have read the whole series and this one fits time wise near the beginning of the series but it doesn't matter in the enjoyment of reading the book.

I really liked this novella. This can be read as a standalone even though it is 9.25 in the series. The cover drew me to the book. The setting is the 4th of July preparation for South Cove’s festival.

If you have been following the series, the main characters are here. There is humor throughout this well written novella. It is a quick and entertaining read.

I enjoyed the twist at the end.

I look forward to many more stories set in this town.

Volunteer fire chief Barry Gleason has made a number of enemies in the days leading up to the Fourth of July (a major money making day for this small tourist town) by threatening to shut people down because of supposed "violations." He does offer to overlook some of the violations in return for "favors." When he uses his own property to stage a fire and rescue, he turns up dead with only three volunteer firefighters (all of whom might have a grudge) in the area.
A short read. I did sort of like the end but it wasn't my favorite.

This novella comes out June 5

I really enjoyed visiting South Cove and all of its inhabitants in this Tourist Trap novella by Lynn Cahoon. The murder mystery was unique and surprising to me. As always the humor and touch of romance was delightful. I look forward to more.

This story baffles me because it’s presented as happening after book 9 in the series, but the characters and their relationships indicate it takes place much earlier. I don’t know why it was numbered as 9.25 but it’s incredibly confusing and needlessly frustrating.

Rockets’ Dead Glare is the newest installment in Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap Mysteries and can easily be read as a standalone. This novella is a quick and easy read. This is a well-written story, with well-developed and affable characters, that moves along at a steady pace. Ms. Cahoon’s writing style flows smoothly; the engaging characters and interesting plot drew me right into the story.

Jill Gardner owns Coffee, Books, and More in the quaint small town of South Cove, California. As the town prepares for their annual fourth of July celebration, local fire chief, Barry Gleason, has managed to upset most, if not all, of South Cove’s business owners. Barry’s conducting inspections for fire code violations, citing multiple violations for each business, and is threatening to close down any business that doesn’t rectify the violations within seven days. Barry sets up a controlled burn in an old barn, with several volunteer firemen in attendance. Before entering the barn to set the fire, Barry instructs them to let the structure burn for thirty minutes, put the fire out, and then determine the cause. After the fire is extinguished, one of the volunteers discovers Barry’s body in the barn. Jill’s boyfriend, Greg King, is a detective for the police department and is constantly trying to stop her from getting involved in his investigations, but Jill has a bad habit of not being able to mind her own business and Greg is unsuccessful in his endeavors to change her.

The local fire chief has managed to upset pretty much every in South Cove by giving them a week to deal with a list of so called fire infractions (most of which are not necessary it must be added), so when he is found dead during a fire drill training exercise the list isn't so much who wanted him dead as a small list of who didn't! Jill wants to find out what happened and why, without stepping on her boyfriend Greg's police toes (too much - grin), that way the whole of South Cove can enjoy the Fourth of July without the death hanging over them.

This is a nice little novella addition to the Tourist Trap Mysteries. I did find that it was a bit jerky in the story-line in areas, but overall it was nicely paced and interesting. The twist at the end was definitely unexpected. #Rockets'deadGlare #NetGalley

The South Cove business district is upset when the volunteer fire chief threatens to shut down their businesses unless they comply with the fire code. But when the fire chief orders a scheduled blaze in an old barn, he’s the only one that gets burned…to death. Can Jill find out who and why someone would want the fire chief killed?
This was a great short cozy mystery. It had all the elements expected in a longer book, and it didn’t leave anything out. I loved the plot and the characters, and was sad when the book ended. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Author Lynn Cahoon turns up the heat in this entertaining novella starring Jill Gregory, owner of Coffee, Books, and More. For fans of the Tourist Trap Cozy Series, there are multiple familiar and well-liked characters mentioned in this plot. The town business owners are incensed when the volunteer fire chief, Barry Gleason, inspects their establishments, lists numerous violations, and threatens to close them all down just before the Fourth of July Festivities. Then, he sets up a controlled burn with the rest of the volunteers, and someone dies. Jill, flanked by her police Officer boyfriend, Greg, and several close friends, manage to smoke out enough clues until it becomes clear what caused Barry’s irrational behavior. I’ve enjoyed every story in this series and highly recommend each one!

I reviewed a digital ARC provided by NetGalley and Kensington Lyrical.

Part of the Tourist trap series which features Jill who owns the local bookstore/ coffee place and Greg, her boyfriend and local detective., along with a large cast of characters. There’s always a suspected murder that Jill gets involved in despite Greg’s admonishments. In this book, the new fire chief is making enemies with everyone in town, enforcing the fire codes above and beyond what is necessary. When he and the firefighters do a controlled burn the chief is found dead inside the fire. Finding out who killed him is a little complicated.

I’ve always enjoyed this series, but think this book is a little thin in the plot department, and is way too short. It felt more like a novella.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for a free ARC novel in exchange for an honest review.

As always this was a brilliant novel in Lynn Cahoon's "A Tourist Trap Mystery" series. It was more of a novella length than a full long book, so it was a quick, fun read. Having read all the books in the series it was nice to see the familiar characters that we've grown attached to. As always something has happened in South Cove and Jill is getting involved much to the displeasure of her policeman boyfriend Greg. All the familiar characters are in the book. There are many good descriptions of books, food and coffee. Looking forward to the next book in the series. 5 stars for this one!

This is the newest book in the Tourist Trap series. It is a novella that takes place around the 4th of July. I love this series! The stores in South Cove are getting ready for the big annual 4th of July Festival. The local fire chief, Barry, is threatening to close down any businesses that don't meet the codes. Jill's store, Coffee, Books & More is first on Barry's list. Then Barry ends up dead. Jill thinks it is murder, but who could have done it? Her boyfriend Greg is the local Police Chief and is also investigsting. It is funny when they show up at the same places. This is a novella, so it is a light cozy mystery and a quick read.

This is another great book by Lynn Cahoon! Rockets’ Dead Glare is a novella in the A Tourist Trap Mystery series, but it easily stands on its own. It is time for the Fourth of July celebrations in South Cove. The local businesses are busily planning for the Independence Day event when the fire chief declares a long list of violations that he wants fixed, annoying everyone and sending them into a scramble. The fire chief, however, is soon found in the ashes of one of his controlled burn exercises. Jill cannot resist the temptation to investigate, much to her detective boyfriend’s chagrin. This book is light, engaging and satisfying. I enjoy books with seasonal or holiday themes and I love novellas for those times you want to read something interesting without a substantial time commitment. I always enjoy A Tourist Trap Mysteries and this novella flows smoothly while adeptly capturing and keeping the reader’s attention.

Whichever of Lynn Cahoon's series I am reading always becomes my favorite. This is another great Jill Gardner/South Cove story and it's like meeting up with old friends again. The South Cove merchants have planned a Fourth of July festival but the local fire chief, Barry Gleason, has put a crimp in everyone's plans by coming up with a long list of violations that need to be fixed or they will be shut down. Barry schedules a controlled burn exercise for the local volunteer fire fighters and is found dead in the barn they are burning. The three fire fighters become prime suspects, but neither Jill nor her detective boyfriend Greg believe any of them are guilty. They both learn that Barry had issues that he was dealing with that may have led to this result. It is an enjoyable mystery with a different twist and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
