I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is apart of the Wollstonecraft series. In this one Grant who is a firm believer in the family curse meets a blast from the past. She has a secret that could case a scandal. Abbie has kept a secret for a very long time and now decides that Grant should know. It really irked me that Abbie was all up in arms that Grant was mad for keeping the secret. I would be pissed off too. So it was hard for me to like her overall a fairly good story I would be interested to know what happens next.
Can Garrett finally break the curse that plagues his family by falling in love with the beautiful nurse who helped pull him out of depression and drug addiction, and do it while undercover investigating an abusive 19th century English factory?
I reallly enjoyed this book. The writing was well done. I liked the character interaction and how the story flowed.. it kept me encaged the whole way through. I always look forward to new books the this author.
This is an intriguing and entertaining story. Garrett is a caring and generous and stubborn man who has lived his life in fear of love because of a curse. Abbie is the woman he fell in love with, then drove away. She is determined, strong and kind. When Abbie sees Garrett again after 15 years, all of the love, longing and hurt come back to the surface. She decides that it's time to reveal to him that he has a daughter. Garrett has been plagued by memories of her all along, when he sees her again, the guilt and love overwhelm him. Unfortunately, theirs isn't the only drama they must contend with. The curse, his nephews addiction and a man seeking revenge are a large part of the storyline. I loved the story and can't wait to see what happens with Aiden.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
I enjoyed the first two books in Karyn Garrard Men of Wollstonecraft Hall series, but this one fell short for me, but again you can’t love them all.
I am just going to pull the bandage right off and get right into this books drawback. The first and biggest drawback for me was both Garrett and Abigail cannot seem to forgive each other and so this means these two keep bring up the same thing that broke them up so many years ago and it got to be dreadful reading it time and time again. The other drawback for me was, I felt like these two never really rekindled that spark to reconnect. After years of separation she brings herself to face him and then before you know it, they were hopping like rabbits I just didn’t feel the connection that would bring them together after all of the years, especially with the fact both Garrett and Abigail, has such a hard time getting over the fact of Garrett just dumping and that she never came running to him all those years ago. The last downside for me is I really wished this series would focus a bit more on the curse that is on the family, and how they are going to find out how to solve the curse for these men.
This story does give you a glimpse into future books with other characters in the story so, you have something to look forward to, I know I am looking forward to the next book.
I was really looking forward to reading this book. Tortured hero? Check. Historical romance? Check. Suspense, drama, and hot loving? Check, check, check. A heroine to root for? Aye, there's the rub! I could NOT stand the heroine! She was the major spanner in the works. I liked her at first but as I got to know her, I wanted Garrett to run in the opposite direction.
Abbie and Garrett had a past that did not end well. He broke it off with her over a curse he believed haunted his family. And she had a big secret at the time of the breakup that she didn't tell him about until they saw each other years later. I usually enjoy reunited lovers stories. However, every time there was a problem, Abbie threw the past in poor Garrett's face. Girl, did you forget the secret you kept from the man?!
I did enjoy the rest of the characters, though, and the storyline of Garrett's nephew Aidan. I would like to know how that turns out. It's a shame an annoying heroine led the story astray.
I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Whenever I request an ARC, I always promise to give a fair and honest review. I liked the concept and the family however, in my opinion, there was too much going on within the Wollstonecraft men within what should have been a story about Abbe Garrett. I would be interested in the other stories but to my way of thinking this was not properly focused and therefore a bit all over the shop.
Garrett and Abigail were young and in love until Garrett decided to end it to protect her from the Wollstoncraft curse. The reunite 14 years later and are very different. Will they find love with each other again? I really liked this historical read. The story is fast-paced with plenty of drama and suspense. A very entertaining read.
The premise of this story was so interesting that I couldn't wait to jump right in. I was expecting a second-chance love story between two people who find their way back to one another after over a decade of being apart. What I got was two people so immature that it was hard to believe they were supposed to be in their thirties. I get it. Really I do. You loved him, and he broke your heart and cast you aside. You loved her, and she didn't tell you the secret she carried. Mistakes were made on both sides, and harsh words spoken. I do NOT need to be reminded of this every other sentence. Seriously. They agree to leave the past in the past, they agree they harbor scars from what was said and done, and they agree to move forward slowly. And the very next second they are at each others throats once again for the words and actions taken fourteen years ago. It got tiring quickly.
In fact, it was so tiring there were times I nearly gave up on reading. It got to the point where I didn't care if they got their happily-ever-after, nor did I really care the outcome of any of the other sub-plots. When I finished, there was just great sense of relief. It was over. I can move on.
However, when I look at this entire story as a whole, I am certain it may still appeal to readers of the first novel (especially if they are fans of this author) as well as others who don't mind a constant rehashing of the past. I would probably give this author another chance.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
It’s easy and heartbreaking to understand Abbie’s reactions when the man she’d love forever turned away from her. In his view Garrett was saving Abbie from his family’s curse, one that always resulted in the death of any man’s wife who would dare to challenge the curse by falling in love. He would rather face a loveless life than risk Abbie. To Abbie, Garrett’s family misfortunes was exactly that, people get ill, women die in childbirth it is a way of life for the time they lived in. His rejection of their love and of her sent Abbie on a path that she would not have willingly chosen. Now, years later her resentment, her anger and yes, the deep hurt finally can be acknowledged to the man who caused her dreams to die. There shouldn’t have still been a spark between them, the love that Abbie was certain had died long ago is renewed in Garrett’s presence. Now the secret that she’s held onto for so many years must be reveled. A second chance at the love of a lifetime is at risk, their happy ending will come only when Abbie lets go of the past and Garrett stops believing in a family curse.
Scandal with a Sinful Scot adds some twists and turns to a situation that often happens, no matter the time period. One vile villain will add to the tensions and the danger that this couple must face to finally experience all that they could have been. I hurt for both Abbie and Garrett for different reasons. They are a couple that fits, and even a noble gesture is meaningless when nothing but heartache results from it. I enjoyed my time in the world of the Men of Wollstonecraft Hall series, and if you enjoy Historical Romance then this is one that should be on your reading list.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Young Abbie and Garrett meet at age eighteen, fall in love and have frequent liaisons before she leaves to go home. Garrett rejects his love for Abbie and sends her away not knowing that she is with child. Years later they see each other again and Abbie must decide if Garrett is able to give the love that she so desperately wants. An average story with big characters and the typical plot of the cat and mouse, he-loves-me, he-loves-me-not-love story. This one was average and did not peak my interest.
Scandal with a Sinful Scot by Karyn Gerrard is available from Lyrical Press, an imprint of Kensington Books. An egalley of this book was made available by the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Scandal with a Sinful Scot by Karyn Gerrard is book Two in the Men of Wollstonecraft Hall. This is the story of Garrett Wollstonecraft and Abigail Hughes. I have read the previous book but feel this can be a standalone book.
Abbie and Garrett fell in love at a young age but Garrett ended up with cold feet. Garrett's family is cursed he believes and to save Abbie from any physical hurt he cruelly broke things off. Now 14 years later Abbie is a widower with a secret that could have ruined her back in the day but she has come face to face with Garrett in the present day. Will Abbie move past the hurt and her secret? Can Garrett choose love this time instead of a family curse?
Enjoyed reading their story!
A story of second chances and secrets that come to life. Garrett Wollstonecraft and Abigail Hughes were young and passionately in love. Until Garrett decided he had to break it off to preserve Abbie from the Wollstonecraft curse. What you say? A lot of unspoken words and youth came into play, so when they meet fourteen years later, they have both changed. Abbie, now widowed, had built up a lot of resentment and hurt feelings toward Garrett that were understandable. A hugh truth comes to light with high emotions. Abbie has definitely changed but they cannot seem to forgive each other. Can the two now find a happy ever after? Will secrets destroy their new relationship? There are a few twists and turns and add in a villain and the story takes you to a great conclusion. Looking forward to future books in this series
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
For the most part, I enjoyed the story but I really had a hard time feeling a connection with Garrett and Abbie. He seemed like a cold selfish man and she held on to the past hurts and was not as quick to forget them as she was to jump back in to Garrett's bed. It also seemed strange that she was the aggressor in their first relationship when women during Victorian times were sheltered and ignorant about sex.
I did like that Garrett really tried to court Abbie and that he wanted a relationship with his daughter and was working on reaching out to her. It was fun to watch the progression of Megan ignoring Garrett to finally thinking of him as her father. I also think that while Garrett believes that Abbie should have come to him when she found out she was pregnant, and he would have married her that probably would have been a big mistake.
Garrett was not ready for marriage and commitment and no woman wants a husband that only married her because he felt that he had to! Abbie complained that Garrett never came for her but then also admits that she didn't fight for him so it feels like they both needed to grow and experience life before they were really ready for a life with each other.
I also need to point out that this book is set in 1845 and during their midnight sex encounters, Garrett produces a rubber condom from America. What I have read is that the patent for a rubber condom was approved in 1844 but production of them did not begin until 1855 so the dates don't match up.
I do hope that there will be a book coming with Aiden's story and we will learn more about his recovery and if the last Wollstonecraft man will find true love so that the curse is broken!
Abbie and Garrett first met 14 years ago and had a passionate summer romance. They meet again, the passion is still there but trust is another thing. There is also the matter of the curse on the Wollstonecraft men that Garrett believes in. Can he overcome his thoughts on it he has held since he was a child? I loved the family bind between the Wollstonecraft siblings and father. Abbie was a forthright character who often acted spontaneously, especially in her younger days. This is the second in the series, I haven’t read the first yet but intend to do so as I thoroughly enjoyed this story. This is a story of second chances for more than one family member. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Scandal with a Wicked Scot by Karyn Gerrard
Men of Wollstonecraft #2
Second chance love story with fourteen years apart sees Abigail meeting up again with her daughter’s biological father, finding the chemistry still hot and Garrett’s fear of a family curse still believed in. I had trouble with the believability factor of more than one aspect of this story although the writing was fine. The families were warm and loving, the friends true, the story of the man seeking vengeance a bit over the top, the man who fell for Aidan a bit unnecessary to the story and I am curious about the reason for Megan and Jonas being together with her so young and the age difference between them.
Did I enjoy the story? Sort of
Would I read another in the series? Perhaps
Would I read another book by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington – Lyrical Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3 Stars
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for letting me read this book. It was fantastic and it kept me going from the start. Scandal with a Sinful Scot is the first book I have read by Karyn Gerrard and certainly will not be the last. I love this book. It is in my re read pile for sure.
I don't want to give the story away, but I will say this book has a family curse, second chances at love, addition, vengeance, family bonds, and a HEA, just to name a few things.
I love the Wollstonecraft men and their crazy curse! These poor guys have so much to offer and a really bad streak of luck when it comes to romance. Ms. Gerrard is great about dropping in romance for all of the generations of males in the family. The closeness of these men is endearing.
Scandal with a Sinful Scot is Garrett’s story of his relationship with Abby. After a passionate summer, Garrett makes sure Abby does not want to marry him or be with him by breaking her heart. Pregnant, she is beaten by her father and marries an older friend of her father to give Garrett’s child a home and father. Her deceased husband was a really good husband and father.
Now, fourteen years later, she sees Garrett and all the hurt and anguish come rushing back. Garrett and Abby have huge hurdles to overcome. Garrett is serious about the curse and protecting Abby’s life just as much now as he did when they were eighteen. The back and forth between these two seemed to carry on a bit long, but makes for a sweet romance.
Ms. Gerard has written in the historical ‘awakening’ of addiction well in the story. Garrett’s care and love for his nephew is one of the things you love about him. The serious drop into the deviant behavior just seems a bit out of place in what could be a light-hearted romance. There is nothing wrong with a bit of drama, but I am just concerned Gerard is going to far. I like my romance somewhat easy and my drama more serious. The creepy Delaney is just that creepy.
Scandal is a good book, just go into it knowing it is now a ‘feel good’ kind of book.
Falling in love was the darkest moment of Garrett Wollstonecraft’s privileged youth, even as he and Abigail Hughes shared a blissful summer of passionate promise. Sworn to keep Abigail safe from the curse plaguing generations of Wollstonecraft men, Garrett sacrificed his future happiness. Now, fourteen years after he lost his heart, Abigail reenters his life. But the woman who arrives unannounced at his ancestral manor is very different from the sheltered girl Garrett once knew.
The widow of a country doctor, Abigail can’t forgive Garrett for his cruel rejection. Yet she can no longer keep the truth from him a secret that could have resulted in her ruin.
I enjoyed this book & found that it flowed well & the characters were well fleshed. I did have difficulty really liking Garrett, I found him rather cold, I liked Abigail but she seemed to swing from hot to cold regarding Garrett. So I didn’t completely buy their relationship. I found myself compelled to finish the story as there was Aidan’s recovery (I hope he has his story) & there was the horrid villain bent on revenge I look forward to more in the series.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is an odd one to review. It’s an interesting story, but totally out of time. It’s like someone picked up a movie plot from this time period, changed the setting, and dropped it into the early Victorian time period. The families are lovely, the couple engaging, but weirdly out of sync. And the weird situation with the “bullyman “ and Aidan is just bizarre. Not sure I’d read the other books in this series, since this one seems so odd. I liked the story of the couple, but portions of this story were just wrong for the time period. And sometimes the narrative felt off, though I’m not sure why. I received a free arc in exchange for an honest review.
