A high school relationship on again and off again the popular guy who keeps breaking up with the school geek. Each character is dealing with their own issues, and for Amy, it causes her to keep breaking up with Craig. Do these two belong together, or do that not? Only those two can answer the question. Enjoyed the read and my copy will be going onto our school classroom library.
Do you remember you first high school love? I know I certainly do and I can still remember the day we meet. It was through a friend and she was down visiting her grandparents (who lived a few doors from my house) and she came over with him (they were cousins). He was visiting his grandparents from Ontario and we instantly hit it off. That was one of the best summers ever and looking back I realized that we were sort of like Amy & Craig with the exception that we never really broke up and got back together all the time. Yes we did drift apart but I think that was due to the fact he lived in Ontario and I lived in New Brunswick and we would always reconnect every so often and date and repeat the cycle. Not once did we say to each other that we were breaking up. I hope that makes sense LOL and just a FYI we are still friends today and talk every now and then.
Anyways onto the book and I quickly want to thank Rockstar Book Tour for allowing me to take part today and for sending me a eArc of the book to read for my review today.
At first I was a little confused because the book does flip back and forth from the past to present. It takes you through the first break up to the last one.
Craig is your typical guy who is into Dungeons and Dragons and comic books. I instantly liked and could relate to Craig because he is that guy you see at school who is awkward and uncomfortable and you know he is not the kind of guy who would never get the popular girl except in his dreams but you still root for him just the same because you want the under dog to get something just once in his life right especially when your twin sister seems to get all the luck in everything she touches. She is the complete opposite of Craig.
Enter Amy said girl that ends up on again off again dating Craig. What Craig doesn’t realize is that yes Amy might be popular but there is more to her then she lets on and when he finds all this out will he still want to be with her?
Amy and Craig is on again off again more times then you can count and towards the middle of it I have to admit I was getting over it and just wished Craig would put his foot down and say enough is enough I can’t do this anymore. But he loves her so much that I wondered how much more could he take?
Looking back now as I write the review this is very typical of a high school romance/situation and I think young adults would get this book much more then I would now.
This is a debut novel and I am excited to read more of his books in the future.
I lost interest in this story unfortunately. Planning on picking it up someday, but right now it is not a priority. Thank you for a copy!
I felt like not a lot happened in this story. Neither of the main characters grew very much. It wasn't bad. It was actually pretty entertaining. It just wasn't memorable.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this book! I wanted to like this, but 1) the formatting of the ebook was really wonky and hindered my understanding and enjoyment of the book and 2) I just don't think I want to read any more stories about milquetoasty boys who are sad they can't be with the girl they like. This book had character, though, and I appreciated the unique format and the strong evocation of its recent historical setting.
A roller coaster of a relationship for Amy and Craig. Two of the most unlikeliest people to ever become a couple. Their on and off again on and off again relationship seems to be their normal. It certainly is making senior year an emotional roller coaster for these two very unlikely people to get together. Craig a nerdy dungeons and dragons gamer and Amy the super popular pretty girl. Will they get back together and stay together or not? Read this great love story and find out!
Thank you for letting me read this book for my high school library. The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig is a super cute young adult romance that has great characters, voice and an engaging plot. I was excited to add this my collection. I apologize for the delay in posting a review.
Craig and Amy are the definition of an unhealthy relationship. They treat each other badly, manipulate one another. Craig is obsessive and clingy. THe book concludes these same things and its why they don't end up together. Even with that conclusion, it doesn't make for a pleasant reading experience. Craig is not a sympathetic protagonist.
This is the book I would highly reccomemd!
I liked the writing style and the atmosphere was magnificient. It really felt like I actually were in the 90s. Author is really skilled with words and that blew my mind. And that's the main reason why I gave this book 4 stars. I would like to read this author's next book, just because the way the author manipulates and weave words and how I ended up sucked right in this world. But, there is a reason why this wasn't a 5 star read for me.
My main problem with this book was that I hated the characters. They were really annoying, Amy especially, and I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. I though Amy was really rude to Craig and it seemed to me like she didn't know what she wants to do at all. And Craig was obssesed with Amy so much it got painful. And even though I didn't like that part of the book, I liked how the author showed us how toxic relationship look like. Not every relationship is the perfect one, and not every relationship is bad only if there is an abuser. Sometimes, relationships are toxic because we want them to work so bad that we actually hurt each other. And this story is the perfect example of it. Craig was so in love that all he wanted was to be with Amy, even though Amy wasn't for him. It made their relationship really bad and author made that comes to spotlight.
Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book and it still deserves 4 stars. It's educational, writing is exquisite and atmosphere is spot on.
Sometimes, the book doesn't need to be perfect. Sometimes you just enjoy the words.
This quirky YA Contemporary will take you back to your first high school boyfriend/girlfriend and remind you of all the uncertainty that came with it. The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig is a uniquely written contemporary that takes you back and forth between the past and present, from the first break up to the last break up, and the people you’ll meet along the way.
Craig is your typical teenage boy who loves dungeons and dragons, and comic books. He is the awkward kid with the awkward friends who never thought he’d get the popular girl, the smart girl. Craig is such a fun character to read because he speaks without thinking, has a love/hate relationship with his twin sister who just so happens to be the complete opposite of him, and finds himself in a relationship he never thought would happen.
Amy is on the road to valedictorian of their high school and has the smarts to go to any college she chooses. She looks like she has everything on the outside but at home she doesn’t feel like she meets her parents expectations, and this is why she excels herself so much in her academics.
Take a journey through the ups and downs as Amy and Craig try to navigate the crazy world of teenage love while also trying to figure out what they want to do with their futures. There are also many many laughs along the way with touches of that teenage angst.
“Are you Okay?” she asked
“What?”
“You seem a little messed up.”
“I’m getting dumped! And I’m probably having an aneurysm or something.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I would appreciate in the future if you would stop breaking up with me.”
This was a beautifully bittersweet love story that was so grounded in realism and authenticity that I fell head over heels, and had my heartbroken alongside Amy and Craig. The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig details the on-again off-again romance between Amy and Craig. We explore their lives, hopes, dreams, and fears as they keep finding their way to each other.
I loved the writing style in the story. Everything was so realistic and clear. It honestly felt like a movie playing out in front of me. I didn’t want to put the book down. And Craig’s narration was so witty, humorous, and personal - we get so many of his random thoughts and clearly see him. It was just fantastic. Reading this story felt like connecting with a friend and just catching up. It was so good. I would have loved to get to know Amy a bit more, maybe even a POV chapter, and the other side characters were only in the story very briefly.
The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig is an unexpected love story about soulmates, friendships, romance, and everything in between. It’s about finding your happiness, while learning to be content in your everyday moments. It shows the messiness of life, and the joy and hope we seek in forming bonds with other people. We see that there are always new endings, and if we’re lucky there are new beginnings too.
I received a copy of the book from Disney-Hyperion in exchange for an honest review.
Decent story line, but the characters felt like caricatures more than real people. I also felt like there was a lot of random things that happened just to advance the story but really made no sense in the context of the book or the time period. Still though, it was a worthwhile story.
Title: The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig
Author: Don Zolidis
Genre: YA
Rating: 3.8 out of 5
Craig is awkward. He plays Dungeons & Dragons, which, in 1994 Wisconsin, does not make you part of the cool crowd. He’s had a crush on Amy for a while. But a geek with the super-smart student body president? That’s never going to happen. Until it does.
Then Amy breaks up with Craig. And gets back together with him. Then breaks up with him again. Over and over again. Seven times.
Senior year is hard enough without adding heartbreak—repetitive heartbreak at that—into the mix. Craig wants to escape his hometown and hopes to find a quirky college to feel at home at. Amy doesn’t know what she wants—she just knows it’s not what she has. It might be Craig. It might not. But both of them are fighting to figure out what really matters—and what they can do about it.
I liked Craig. He’s quirky and fun and definitely awkward. His group of friends are all nerdy but vibrant. Craig and Amy together, however…Well, I was Team Craig in this one. Except he was basically selfish and oblivious of what was going on around him, so focused on himself and what he wanted that it never occurred to him to think about what other people wanted. But he does grow and develops an awareness of others that is both fledgling and blooming, making this worth reading.
Don Zolidis is a playwright and former teacher. The Seven Torments of Amy and Craig is his first published novel.

I wanted to like this book, but I couldn't get into it. It threw me off that the first pages told me they would not end up together. I want to figure that out for myself.
This book captures youth and the feelings that surround them to a T. I absolutely love this debut author. While the book starts out with a spoiler, letting you know how it will end, you cant help but be compelled to read on to see why/ how it gets there. This book was a one click read for me. I was so invested into these two characters hoping that maybe, just maybe in the end it could or would work out. It also shows that sometimes what we think or know is best, really isnt what lies ahead for us in the gran scheme of things. I found this novel compelling and honest and dare to say that this author will rise to the top.
This probably wasn't the best week for me to read a book about a shallow high schooler's attempts at love. He's an okay kid, but I'm just not in the mood for him to be so dense. Both of these kids are probably realistic, but OMG they're so self-indulgent. Didn't really care if they got together or not.
What a delightful, witty coming of age story, where girl meets boy and breaks up with boy. Six times. In the meantime, there are high school stories with angst and love and considerable dungeons and dragons for the nerds among you. The ending, while we were warned, fell a little flatter than it should have.
The characters were so well developed, I’ve met them, I’ve been at coffee shops watching them and grew to love them.
I did enjoy this book thoroughly and would highly recommend those you love YA fiction. It’s a great debut novel. Watch this space for more great writing from the author.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, as well as #NetGalley for the privilege of reading this complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book starts with a spoiler, this is not a happy ending. And yet, you still read it all the time wondering how it will actually end.
3.5, because of a lost in pace around the ending.
Craig is an awkward nerd but he has finally made a move on Amy, one of the most popular girl in school. When they become boyfriend and girlfriend, Amy soon dumps Craig until then they get back together and repeat.
Told in a non linear form by Craig himself starting from one of their breakups before we learn how they met and got together, we can't help but feel morbidly curious where they'll go for Craig to call it a bad ending.
This is surely a different YA. Though I have read one with a similar proposal, it didn't work as well as this one. Craig is a great character, and Amy isn't bad at all, I liked her, though I'm still not sure I understand her reasons.
And that's one of the big falls. I thought I was reaching a good reason they couldn't be together, a bit plot twist. I didn't. On the bright side, the book felt real, as if the author had gone out with an Amy during his teenager days. I did understand there was a deep meaning to the story, it wasn't in vain. I was still a bit disappointed.
Aside from that, this is a really quick-to-read book with charismatic characters, especially Craig's friends. Also, it takes place in the mid-90's. Since I was a teenager around then, I identified a lot with some of the issues, like Craig's parents' rule of no telephones after nine—even though we didn't have one that explicit back home. This nostalgic feeling is something only an older public should be able to enjoy, and that was great. Of course, it's still YA but it did speak to me as well.
I'm recommending this to readers who are after some variety in light-read contemporary YA; there's some drama but nothing too heavy and this was surely entertaining.
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
This book immediately felt like a John Hughes movie. Craig's voice was so authentic and relatable. I felt like I was hearing him & seeing him, not just reading a character.
This story is about the love and heartbreak of Amy and Craig. At the very beginning you learn that this is a romance of ups and downs, make-up and break-ups. And this is what makes this book so real. Unlike so many teen romances, this one isn't about being saved or someone knowing the perfect thing to say . Trust me, I love those books too but I would like my teen patrons to read this too. This is what real teen love is . Craig makes so many mistakes and Amy is so analytical that they are destined to fail...or are they? . I think they are both very likeable, as well as the side characters, in all their nerdy D&D glory! This is a fun read with many laugh out loud moments and just enough seriousness wrapped in.
This was a refreshing, superbly written YA love story from the male POV. I thoroughly enjoyed this book mainly because it felt very authentic. I only wish I hadn't read the warning about how it would end. But either way, I enjoyed it.
