I was excited to read this, and definitely ordered it and the sequels for our library! It has been well received by kiddos who like other Rick Riordan Presents series.
Loving these new Riordan Presents series. Its great that he has stepped back and given people this platform to write their traditional mythology. They follow the same formula as the Percy Jackson. Great book for the age range
Finally had a chance to read this with my daughter and we enjoyed it. It was different than what we normally read and she loved that the character was homeschooled like her. We also like to hike and explore - granted, not in the same type of location. lol. We had a lot of fun reading this one.
The Rick Riordan Presents imprint has a lot of really strong series. This one wasn't as engaging, for me, as many of the others, but middle grade readers will eat it up.
This was a really interesting book. I was unfamiliar with Mayan mythology and I enjoyed learning about it. Zane is a great protagonist. I liked his character arc.
Of all the Rick Riordan Presents books, this is the one that reminds me most of Percy Jackson.
I really enjoyed Storm Runner and am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. I decided to read it because I am a big Rick Riordan fan. This reads much like his books. The characters are likable and we'll developed as you read. My only frustration was that Zane kept making bad choices! I guess that was necessary for the plot, but I hope he has learned to make better choices in the next book. Also hoping for more of Brooks in the sequel!
This book was SO GOOD!!!!! Zane was absolutely adorable and had such a great voice, and although there’s so much more to be explored I learned so much about Mayan mythology that I didn’t know before. There was so much about this book that I loved and just can’t formulate into words now, but if you enjoy Rick’s books you guys definitely have to pick this one up! (ALSO: Hispanic AND Disabled rep?? I CANT SAY BETTER THINGS!)
I read this and shared it with my brother and he absolutely loved it, too! It's such a wonderful, funny, cute book and I think it's the perfect read for middle graders. I can't wait to pick up the next one!
Why did I take me so long to pick up this book? It was amazing! I'm SO excited for the next installment. And I earned big cred with my 2nd Graders because I had read this book which they were also picking up.
I received an advanced ecopy of this title via NetGalley and Disney book group. My heartfelt thanks.
Full disclosure: I was fully prepared to give this 3 stars, maaaaaaybe 4. Then the last third of the book happened. Absolutely worth it all.
The first third or so of the book went very slowly. I didn't understand a lot of what was going on, had trouble visualizing some things . . . but I really wanted to know the whole story. I'm very glad I stuck with it, but I could have used some of Jazz's chocolate (read the book. :]) to get me to the halfway point or so.
As a whole though, this book is a rich tapestry of culture, mythology, history, and a textbook "how-to-write-a-great-book" example. I really thought all hope was totally lost for our merry band of characters. And great writing saved the day (as it should). That cliffhanger though! No, not that one. ;)
Zane Obispo is a fantastic narrator and helmsman of this new mythology epic series. And, despite other evidence to the contrary, he's a fantastically HUMAN protagonist. Human without being irritating. Oops, bad thing happening? Oh look, pretty girl! (But not so googly-eyed that he loses his head every time there's a crisis - trust me, the last book that did that was lucky to get 2 stars.) Zane balances being really sarcastic with really witty with really annoying - I am a sucker for characters that don't drag me on their side that easily.
I worried (especially in the first half) that this was simply an imitation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. But, as I found, this volume stands on its own while honoring the ingredients that made PJO and its fellows such a wild success. And kids, it's educational too, so this totally counts as school-related.
And J.C. Cervantes, thanks for not breaking the number one rule of basically everything. I won't spoil it, so let's just say that having to yell, "STEAK!" on occasion is a price I'm cool with.
I have no fallen in love with a book like this in such a long time. The story draws you in and the punched keep coming. I love all the mythology used to bring this story to like. I highly recommend this book to all readers.
This book was really good!! I enjoyed the MC, Zane, he has such personality!! I loved learning about Mayan mythology. I have several students that love books written by Rick Riordan so after reading, and enjoying, this book I purchased a copy for students in my classroom to read. Great book, I can't wait to read more!! (Although, there is something in the beginning of the story that could be sad for the students, so you should be sure to read the book before so you can make the correct choice of allowing tenderhearted students to read.) Enjoy!!
If you are a fan of Rick Riordan you won't want to miss this one. With a story that is very remininscient of Rick Riordan's blend of fantasy and mythology, JC Cervantes spins a story that is fantastical, fun and completely absorbing. Readers of all ages will be entertained as they learn about Mayan mythology. This rollicking tale is filled with fun characters, suspense, and tender moments. Don't miss it!
Okey, i'm sorry that i'm too late for giving the review. But, fiuh. Okey, this book was amazing, good written, and very much like Percy Jackson. It was fun to read. Telling us about Mayan Myth and stuff, wow... that was awesome. I've never thought someone could "package" that myth into a fun story to read. The characters? 4 out of 5.
The Storm Runner is a page turning, wild ride adventure in Mayan mythology. Though it is part of the Rick Riordan imprint, the book stands on its own and avoids the cookie-cutter format. Unknowingly Zane Obispo and unleashed the lord of death, darkness, and despair from imprisonment and he now has three days to correct his mistake in order to save the world.
I adored Zane who is instantly relatable, funny and sweet. He is content exploring the volcano in his backyard with his dog, Rosie, and doing what he can to please his mother, who works hard for little. He is insecure of his disability, where one of his foot smaller than the other, and one leg shorter than the other, which subjects him to bullying. Like Percy's dyslexia was a signal of his demigod status, Zane's limp does the same for him. When he meets Brooks, a girl who appears after a mysterious plane crash, and she warns him, first, that he's in danger, and, second, that he's destined to set off the apocalypse his whole world goes topsy-turvy. Cervantes wastes no time getting right into the action. We follow Zane as he tries to make sense of the prophecy, his own supernatural origins, and fights demons and tries to outsmart gods who mean to harm him. It is absolutely refreshing to learn about non-European centric mythology. The conversational tone of the book which includes plenty of humor and Spanish words sprinkled in make the characters sound authentic and easy to read. There are plenty of action sequences and suspenseful moments that will keep the pages turning as the tension escalates and the characters face deepening stakes. While this is a no-brainer recommendation for the millions of Percy Jackson fans, this would also be a great book to highlight Mayan mythology and Mexican culture. While the book does not end in a cliffhanger, there are plenty of questions left to answer in the following books of the Storm Runner series.

I just can't get into this one, no matter how hard I try. I was so very interested in a PJ-style book about Mayan mythology (!!!), but something about the writing is not clicking with me. And the MC is personable, but that's not enough to pull me in sadly.
I did not expect to like Storm Runner as much as I did--honestly, I thought it would be too much like the Percy Jackson arc, but I found Zane and his dog Rosie so likable. I really think readers will relate Zane and his imperfections--he is a strong unlikely hero. With Rosie by his side, I became emotionally involved in their relationship and success. Still, there were parts of the plot that were so packed with details that it was a bit difficult to follow--so much happens. While I love Greek mythology, I have not been exposed to many from other cultures, so The Storm Runner was an entertaining way to learn about Maya mythology. I think many of my students will love The Storm Runner and connect with Zane on his adventure.
I can see why this one is published under Rick Riordan’s publishing company. Most of the time I had to remind myself he didn’t write it. This is an extremely talented author, I loved all the witty humor. I also need to make a pie note saying I will be reading anything Rick Riordan Presents. I’m starting to really be into middle grade fantasy, since I can fly through them and get a fun, interesting story.
All the Mayan Mythology in this one was awesome! I feel like I learned so much, but didn’t even realize it (which is great for middle age books, don’t you think). The fact that there was so much diverse representation in this one made it even better! It’s not everyday you see a hispanic, disabled main character! Zane made me laugh so much, and I just appreciated him as a whole.
Overall, if you want a diverse, fast-paced, middle age fantasy that keeps you wanting more, you’ve found it! If you are a fan of Rick Riordan’s books, look no further, because here you have a book I can almost guarantee you will love! I will absolutely be reading everything from this ne publishing company!
I personally did not really enjoy this book. It was very much the Percy Jackson of Mayan mythology. In some cases it just felt a little too close almost like the author was trying to emulate it too much. I think the story telling was fine and look forward to possibly seeing what the author has in the future. However, I think the middle grade audience that loves Percy Jackson will eat this up too.
This book was so much fun! I read it with my daughter (9) who is a huge fan of the Rick Riordan books. Storm Runner lives up to expectations and had my daughter looking for more information on Mayan mythology, Fun and learning? Double win!
