I think this book is among top 5 books that I've read about this subject. If you are dealing with an autistic person and probably don't know how to handle things correctly so you don't provoce a meltdown, then you should definitely start reading this book!
Very insightful. I'm new to learning about autism and it has helped me to understand some of my sons behaviors.
This concise guide to understanding autistic behaviors will likely prove helpful to anyone trying to understand why individuals on the spectrum behave the way they do and how to help them improve their behavior. It does a nice job of teaching by example, and each chapter ends with a review of the key concepts learned and a chance to practice applying those concepts by answering questions. Because of these workbook-style exercises, some readers might prefer to use a hard copy of the book rather than purchasing an ebook version.
I like that the author provides very specific advice. For example, when discussing creating goals for an individual on the spectrum, she suggests that the individual should be able to complete at least 75% of the goal independently, needing assistance with no more than 25%, and that on a scale of 1 to 10, the goal shouldn't require more than a level 3 effort to achieve. Then she describes what that assistance might look like (periodic check-ins, advice, redirection).
Many of the suggested interventions would be helpful even for individuals not on the spectrum. I loved the idea of using a scale of 1 to 10 to monitor internal state, and to be able to quickly communicate that information to friends, family members, and caregivers. I felt much the same way about the rating scale for evaluating the severity of problems--that's a great tip for anyone prone to anxiety.
Most of my irritations with the text were likely because I was reviewing an uncorrected proof. I requested and was provided an ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting. The ARC I received had many errors in both formatting and editing and was at times very difficult to read, but it was an uncorrected proof, so hopefully those mistakes have been corrected in the published version.
Very good primer on understanding people with ASD. Helpful and informative with lots of examples of how to care for and motivate such individuals to improve their quality of life.
Great choice for a first read in the autism arena. New to the ASD world myself, this gave me a new perspective on ASD and helped me to understand what they require to be successful. I can see now where I went wrong in certain situations with my own daughter (newly diagnosed) and why certain tactics failed and others succeeded.
Definitely not a definitive source on all aspects of ASD, but like I said - a great primer. Good choice for a first read if, like me, you’re new to all this. Quick and easy to understand!
This book offers a good overview of a complex neurological condition. There are some very practical explanations, strategies and interventions that could be helpful for parents and teachers of children on the autism spectrum. I appreciate the author's use of real world scenarios to explain behaviors and the their underlying causes to guide the readers toward intervention techniques.. I didn't feel like there was any new information in this book but there is very useful information presented in a usable format.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
'Understanding Autistic Behaviors' was a very well written, detailed, and practical book that will help family members, friends, caregivers, and others who work with or regularly interact with people on the Autism Spectrum to better understand and respond to these individuals.
The author used very clear language and provided such easy to understand analogies that any person reading this would find it not only easier to interact with a person on the Spectrum, he or she will also be able to relate to a person on the Spectrum in terms of certain triggers or behavior patterns.
Another aspect of the book that worked very well was its instructional style. The author provided numerous examples as well as opportunities to reflect and create one's own ideas for how to problem solve with a person on the Spectrum. The worksheets included in the book could be used either individually, in a small group or classroom, or in a family therapy session.
Overall, this book was fantastically written. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about the behavioral patterns of those on the Spectrum, or anyone who works with or interacts with a person on the Spectrum on a regular basis. Great work!!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for a review.
I got a lot of information in that book. I know aboput autism already and i learned a few new things, but not that much.
It feels like kicking a kitten to be at all critical of this book as it is thoroughly well intentioned and earnestly written. Nevertheless, I promised to give an honest review of the book (thank you NetGalley) and I want potential readers to know the weaknesses as well as the strengths. I upped my rating from three stars (I liked it) to four (I really liked it) because it's a little book who's trying very hard to do right by its readers.
Understanding Autistic Behaviors does exactly what the title suggests. It explains autistic challenges and suggests ways to mitigate those behaviors with practical and functional approaches. It offers step-by-step ways to understand and work with autism and is a welcome addition to any carer's arsenal.
The book really deserved a professional hand in editing and feedback. The prose struggles with passive voice, unintentional condescension, and the page count is massively expanded (for a very short book) by extremely unhelpful "Practice the Concepts Learned" sections. Think of this as a pamphlet that grew into a book. I really wish the author would have entirely dropped those practice sections or (better) offered concrete answers for each challenge. The reader is buying the book exactly for those connections from advice to practical application.
Complaints aside, I fully recommend the book. I have bought a copy of my own (at the time I read this, it only cost $3.99 at Amazon), along with her other book on young adults with autism. Buy it for the content, not the delivery.
I may dislike the writing. I may dislike the empty exercises. Still, I think the advice is fresher and more relevant than the many other books I have read and bought in this arena.
As someone who works with students with ASD on a day to day basis, most of this was already known, however there were some fantastic points in this work that I will be trying!
This book is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to know a little more about ASD and about how to help those with ASD succeed in their world.
