Fantastic Story. Filled with everything a Sci-Fi nerd like myself loves.
The illustrations are simply perfect.
The fact that this book contains the first six installations of this series is fabulous.
5 OUT OF 5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Unfortunately, the file wasn't prepared for reading on KIndle and I really struggled to read the text as it appeared very tiny. I read a couple of first pages and had to give up on it.
'Chimera' with story and art is a graphic novel set in a different time and place.
This story revolves around an intergalactic crew of thieves after a priceless artifact. They have to be cautious because this is hostile world with very vengeful gods. The story unfolds between the past and the present.
I liked a lot of the bones of this story. The worldbuilding and religions seemed solid enough. The character design and crisp art design was really nice to look at. The story fell apart for me with all the thrashing back and forth in time. It kept throwing me a bit out of the story, but I did like the story that was told.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Comicker Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
A fanciful mix of Dune and Sta Wars, of aliens and artifacts, Chimera is an intriguing beginning to a new epic science fiction series that has all the staples of a classic., I can't wait to read more! Even if Russell is already gone :'(
Gorgeous book with a world well planned and drawn. The concept of the reader not quite knowing everything is carried off a little clumsily (creating some confusion), but the characters are engaging.
I could have sworn I had left feedback for this title already, but it's still on my list, so either I forgot or for some reason it didn't register. I posted a review quite a while ago on Weekend Notes. It's an original, gripping comic, with cool looking monsters and a story that sucked me in and made me want more.
In this book, a group of thieves is hired to do a completely insane job, which consists on finding the mysterious chimera.
I have to start by saying that the art in this graphic novel was gorgeous. The art, together with some plot points reminded me of Saga, another graphic novels series which I really like.
The characters were quite interesting, which helped create a compelling story.
Even though I was confused in some parts, the plot was well-thought and, with the complex characters I’ve mentioned above, formed an intriguing graphic novel that I highly recommend.
On another day, I might have rated this book higher. It's a sci-fi book that starts out as a caper and integrates some interesting alien species. There are some high level moments involving religious sects and various gods. I enjoyed the characters. The designs for the different species are all well done. And the interactions between the different groups really bring the setting to life. It hits a lot of story beats that usually appeal to me.
My problem with this book comes from the storytelling method. I found it tiring to read another book where there is this big problem and the reader isn't privy to enough information about everything involved. I understand the creators can't give everything away at the beginning, but by the time things started to get interesting I didn't care what was happening in this world. Despite that, when I got to the end of this book it had me hooked. I can't say I loved it though and I'm not sure I'd be willing to read the next part of the story.
Interesting book but nothing that makes you want to continue to follow the series. It simply fails to grab the reader or illicit the desire to follow the characters any further.
This series is awesome! I am totally hooked!
As promised, yes, we do have a band of thieves and a heist. Each character has their own motivations, secrets and agenda. We also have a fun brother/sister dynamic. That would have been enough. The story includes religion and gods and monsters and alien cultures and a pet locust the size of a Shih Tzu. The story is epic in scope and also very human.
Warning -- you may be a little confused at the beginning, intrigued but confused. Just keep going.
The colour palette reminds me of the work of Jen Wang (The Prince and the Dressmaker, In Real Life), but Ellis' art style is all their own.
Please note that this graphic novel includes violence (including torture and genocide).
Highly recommend! I have now read up to issue #9 and will definitely be continuing.
Chimera is a graphic novel told over (at least) three time periods wherein the main characters are trying to keep an extremely powerful object out of an evil god's hands. One of the other timelines is a very different story: a priestess of the god "accidentally" sets free the most dangerous prisoner of all time. One assumes, that later in the series, these two storylines will meet up.
Chimera: Book One was very confusing. Granted, I'm not the biggest fan of graphic novels, and I struggle with the nuances of the medium, but I had a very hard time following the multiple storylines. This is partially because of the rapidity between which they switched. Additionally, the language is unnecessarily vulgar. I'm okay with the occasional f-bomb, but they swear like sailors in Chimera.
Book Review
Title: Chimera: Book One - The Righteous and the Lost
Author: Tyler Ellis
Genre: Graphic Novel
Rating: *****
Review: The premise of Chimera was interesting, it reminded me of Six of Crows crossed with Star Wars, basically, it is about a group of thieves that must navigates hostile worlds in the middle of an interstellar holy war in order to complete their mission. The opening to Chimera was great, we are introduced to siblings living in the desert with talking animals (I’m talking Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy type of talking animals) hunting bloodthirsty locust. While this seems absurdly strange it really seems to work.
As we approach the ¼ mark in the story, we learn that the group of 4 thieves includes the siblings Alice and Charlie and they are in possession of a very valuable item known only as the Chimera. Both Alice and Charlie have pasts that are briefly discussed. Alice has links to the supposed God and the seven priestesses as she was their former champion, however, we get more background on Charlie. He was part of the coalition, which was basically a forced labour camp, where he fell in love with Gideon. Gideon wants to leave the coalition, but this is treason and while Charlie tries to dissuade him, he eventually relents but they are caught. Charlie is given the choice between killing Gideon or both of them being killed and while we don’t know the choice Charlie made it seems pretty clear right now.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the story, we jump backwards and forwards in the storyline to learn more about the characters and the how they all came to be in their current situation. So far, I was absolutely loved the group dynamic as it really reminds me of Guardians so much. There is also a lot of humour hidden within some of the more serious moments that really make you laugh.
As we approach the halfway mark in the story, the fight for the Chimera keeps the group moving trying to dodge both the Gods and the Conclave but we also know that there is a traitor among them and we have been trying to work out who it is. When the traitor is revealed and the motivation for the betrayal we begin to sympathize more and more about how the traitor has been forced into this position, but they haven’t abandoned their friends yet.
As we cross into the second half of the story, the group have encountered the conclave, but the God is on his way as well and they know the only way they are going to escape alive is being fleeing as soon as they can. The fight between them is hard but the group manages to escape with their lives, but they temporarily lost the Chimera but now it is a race to get it back before it falls into the hands on the enemy.
As we approach the ¾ mark in the story, we are beginning to unravel the lies we have been told since the start of the story and it makes for some very interesting reading. However, my favourite point so far is that Charlie has befriended a baby bug from the Queen’s brood and it helps them from time to time. Seeing the truth revealed through a character who seemed important yet insignificant at the same time was beautiful as it is interspersed with snippets of past and currents event that have all lead to this point.
As we cross into the final section of the story, the confusing start to this story is long forgotten and we have become very attached to the characters and the way this volume ends really broke my heart and I will definitely be continuing on with this series. I really liked the LGBT rep in this story and I hope that Charlie gets another love interest in the series. My favourite character would be a tie between Russell and Charlie because of their backstories and personalities but I also liked Nymph, but she isn’t a key character though she does have some key scene. I highly recommend Chimera and I will be reading volume 2 as soon as I can.
This graphic novel follows a team of space outlaws through a big fantasy space world. It has a Star Wars or Saga feel to it. There's a lot to take in in this book. I think I would have preferred a book with a closer perspective. I love that a gay character is featured. I give this graphic novel a 3.5/5.
A great blend of fantasy and science fiction that reminds me of Saga, with great, compelling characters
Loved this it was something different to read i will be buying this when this one comes out! I would also read more by this author ! can't wait to see what else awaits in the future!
An entertaining graphic novel. The story is a bit unoriginal but I think it was handled well. It's definitely worth taking a look at if you're a fan of graphic novels.
I really enjoyed this and will definitely be looking out for the next volume. It tells the story of a rag tag group of thieves fighting an emperor god...just the usual! It took me a few pages to get into the vibe of the book, but once I did, I really got on board with the characters and the plot is really compelling. There is a lot of prose here, but this is very well broken up with full panel illustrations that are well drawn and interesting to look at. There are some good twists and turns throughout the narrative and the world building is great. All in all, I thought this was a really fun read.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Description:
Haunted by their pasts, a crew of thieves is hired for a covert mission in the midst of a galaxy being ripped apart by an interstellar holy war. If they want to survive - much less succeed - they must navigate hostile worlds, vengeful aliens, a deranged demon, and betrayal from within. Collects the first six issues of the acclaimed sci-fi/fantasy series, as well as a pin-up and cover gallery. Perfect for fans of STAR WARS, FIREFLY, or SAGA.
My Thoughts:
This is a good start to a series. A group is given an impossible mission. Powerful forces are in their way. Loyalty and betrayal have a price.
The illustrations are beautiful and there is an LGBTQ character as well as a mixture of human and non-human characters perfect for an adventure that spans universes.

In this graphic novel we follow a group of four thieves, in possesion of the 'Chimera' and on the hunt for a looking glass. These characters are quite well developed, especially for a graphic novel. Each of them has some backstory which shows they reader their struggles and stakes in the mission. Russel, a dog-like character really stands out with his grey morality.
Religion plays a big role in this story. One of the four thieves used to be a monk, and one of the creepy villains is something that calls itself a God and is worshipped as such... but may not be one. Added to that is some ugly dragon like creature, another supposed to be God in a different religion. I am not religious myself and it is something that can easily annoy me in books. However, that did not happen in this case. So jeey.
There is a little bit of romance, which again can quite annoy me, and again it didn't. I actually quite appreciated it. It was never overpowering throughout the story, but it did add to the character. So jeey again.
I did like the art style. It wasn't anything special, but it worked well for the story. The wide variety of species portrayed was awesome, but there was too little attention given to the different worlds.
Overall, this has huge potential for an awesome series. The plot could be a bit tighter, but this was for a large part due to the many flashbacks which served to introduce the characters. This is a very fun and enjoyable read and I am defenitely curious to what happens next.
(4 and a half stars)
Wow, this was sweet!
I loved the art style and the world of this comic. I've never realized I'm into sci-fis set in a mostly desert setting, for one, I don't really like the Star Wars for example, but here, both the setting and the alien species were things I enjoyed and loved. I especially liked the character of the skeptical priestess who keeps questioning and doubting her God. We don't know many things about the different species, where they come from, what they are like truly, where they got to where they are now, etc., but I'm highly thrilled to find out more about them and the interesting world, too!
