Is murder always wrong? Even when the victim is really, really reprehensible? This is a story where there are no clear-cut “good” choices for the characters. You aren’t sure who to cheer for and who you want foiled. There is no black and white with the two main characters. They are complicated and make mistakes that show them to be quite unlikable but also understandable as humans who screw up. When faced with a huge, awful issue will they come together to face it or will it break them? Terrible things are done for very good reasons, noble reasons even, but they are still terrible things. It’s such a complex moral tangle and it made me hope to never face such a dilemma in my own life because I honestly don't know what I would choose.
This was one of the most tension filled books I have ever read! My stomach was in knots the entire time and while I wanted to keep reading because I was dying to know what was going to happen I also didn’t want to know as I suspected it wasn’t going to be pretty. The anticipation was cringe-worthy and anxiety inducing. Despite being a pressure cooker of suspense I was a bit surprised to laugh out loud several times. Events were just so macabrely funny and ridiculous that I couldn’t help but giggle at their antics. I felt a little bad about it but there was just some element of dark humour that I couldn’t resist.
The resolution was almost too neat and tidy but I have to admit that it pleased me and I can’t be mad at it. It was very convenient but also very satisfying. The twist in the epilogue didn’t come as a surprise as I guessed/feared/happily anticipated that might be the direction the character would take but it delighted me. Absolute cackling glee! Side note: I’m a horrible person.
Make sure you clear your schedule before you start this one. It’s a killer!
Thank you to HARLEQUIN and MIRA for providing an Electronic Advance Reader Copy via NetGalley for review.
I don’t know at first I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. Natalie and Will met in college. Fell in love and married having one child Charlie. Fast forward 11 or so years and Charlie’s principal is Accused of molesting a child, shaking the community to its core. Bring attorneys Nat and Will know the ins and outs of crime. Can they get away with it?! Planning the perfect crime? Gotta read the book to find out. I give it about 3.5 stars 🌟
A very cleverly written, entertaining thriller which I read in almost one sitting. Could they get away with murder? Read it and see....Thanks to Netgalley & Harlequin for giving me the opportunity to read this fast paced thriller.
Could they get away with murder?
That is what Will and Natalie talked about on their first date in law school. Years later after many years of marriage they must examine that question again when they learn some shocking news involving their son, Charlie. Nat is a defense attorney and does not want her son to testify. She knows the process and does not want her son to go through the stress. Plus, she is angry - furious in fact. She wants justice and she wants it her way. Will is concerned and angry as well. He goes along with his wife to keep a secret he has been keeping and because, well, it's too late to turn back now.
This book is interesting as we know from the synopsis most of the plot. Something bad has happened and the characters take matters into their own hands. What lengths are they willing to go to obtain justice? What gives someone the right to take justice into their own hands? Can you get away with your actions? How does one plan and execute the perfect crime? Can someone ever cover up their tracks entirely?
Both parents in this book are lawyers and I was shocked at some of the poor choices and bad judgement calls they made. I'm pretty sure anyone watching true crime tv, CSI, Criminal minds, forensic files, could do the same if not better than this pair. Having said that, they are under stress and emotionally involved so some of their mistakes make sense.
It is always interesting to read a book when you basically know most of the plot. The reader is given a lot of information and the true question is "will they get away with it?" There were parts that I thought "Seriously?" and then there were parts where I thought "this is what I am talking about". This was a fast read for me and there were some good moments. It may have the reader questioning their stance on vigilantes, what they would do if they were Charlie's parents, and how they might have done things differently (or would the reader take the course of action Nat and Will took?)
This was pure escapism reading for me. Yes, it does deal with a difficult subject. Thankfully the reader is only given *enough* information about what happened to Charlie -nothing too graphic but enough that it is unsettling, and it is obvious what happened. Plus, Will has his side action *ahem*, I meant subplot going on. So, I was waiting for that (high-heeled) shoe to fall. It was fun, watching the duo squirm when the police arrive. Reading both Nat and Will's POV was also enjoyable. The reader is privy to their thoughts about each other, what is going on, their own actions, etc. Both had some interesting thoughts!
There is a lot to discuss with this book. It deals with a pedophile. Molestation is not an easy subject for various reasons. What lengths will a parent go through to protect their child? Vigilante justice - do people agree or disagree on it? These are two of the issues. Although molestation has occurred, the book focuses on the parent's reactions and the lengths they will go through for their child. Will they get away with it? Will the police uncover the truth? Will this make them stronger or wear them down? Although this book does deal with heavy subjects, it does so in a lighter way. Be warned, some may experience triggers while reading this book and may have an issue with the book taking a lighter stance.
Then there is that ending. I don't feel I can discuss it without giving away any spoilers, so I will just say that the ending was interesting.
Thank you to Harlequin-Mira and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Natalie and Will met at law school where they joked over dinner one night that they could get away with murder. Cut to the present day, 15 years later, and their innocent fantasy is put to the test. Just how far would you go to protect your own child.. when their son is hurt, Natalie decides to take matters into her own hands and Will is forced to go along for the ride. As they dodge detection, the tension mounts and no one is safe.
Fast paced thriller with a great, readable plot!
Do you think you could get away with murder? This is the very question Natalie and Will, two law students, discuss on their first date. Years later they are married, have successful careers, and are parents to 10 year old, Charlie. Their life has become routine and somewhat predictable. When something unthinkable happens to their son they begin to question if they really could get away with murder.
I could not put this book down. I loved the development of the characters and felt like I could understand why they made the choices they did. I could not wait to see how things turned out. This book kept me up very late at night so that I could finish it. I will be looking forward to more books by Margot Hunt.
Thank you Netgalley and Harlequin - MIRA for the opportunity to read this advanced reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is about a married couple, Nat and Will, and their son, Charlie. After Charlie lets Nat in on a secret, she decides to take matters into her own hands.
I absolutely loved this book, and I love Margot Hunt! I haven't read a book from her yet that I didn't love! This book grabbed my attention from page 1, and the only thing that made me put it down was having to charge my Kindle. It's a quick read, that really makes you cheer the couple on, even though neither are particularly likable or good people. Nat's reaction is completely realistic, although the ending was a bit questionable. I can see it happening in a small town though, especially in the South. Can't wait to see what Hunt has in store for us next!
I'm a sucker for a story involving an anti-hero...and this one gave me two! A page-turning thrill ride that kept me engaged until the very end! I highly recommend this one.
I loved this book so much, I inhaled it in one day. Natalie and Will were both such interesting characters and just when I felt I had them figured out, they would do something completely unexpected. I loved that this book kept me guessing from start to finish. Definitely would recommend this to all mystery and thriller fans!
When the unthinkable happens to their son, Charlie, Natalie (Nat) and Will take justice into their own hands. This thriller raises some thought-provoking questions. How far would you go for your child? For your spouse? This book was fast-paced and you get to see things from both Nat and Will’s points of view. I thoroughly enjoyed reading from Nat’s point of view and found her character to be pretty great. I was intrigued by the ending and overall enjoyed this book.
For Better and Worse is the first book I have read by Margot Hunt but it will definitely not be the last. I truly enjoyed this book and unfortunately finished it in a day.
The book deals with the tough subject of pedophilia and its impact on not only the children but also the parents and the community. It is very well written as informative rather than sensational and is one of the reasons the book works so well.
Without going into detail, the story tells of a couple who are both attorneys and to what lengths they are ready to go in order to protect their son. It also shows the impact of these decisions on their morality.
I most definitely recommend this book and happily give it 5 stars. Also thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this advance copy in exchange for my unbiased review.
On their first date, law students Natalie and Will discussed how to plan the perfect murder. Years later, they put their plan in action. But it’s not as easy as they thought. For one, killing an actual person is very different from planning a hypothetical murder. Two, they don’t trust each other anymore…
The writing is excellent, but the ending did not match up to the rest of the book. I wanted something more. I would still give it a solid 4 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was a great page turner with a very unusual plot that keeps the reader guessing until the end. It shows that parents will ultimately do anything to keep their children safe.
For Better and Worse - Natalie and Will are college sweethearts who met in Law School and on their first date wondered if they were smart enough to get away with murder. Fifteen years later their conversation comes back to haunt them after Nat makes some tough decisions after their son is put in danger. Can they actually get away with what they have done and if so can they live with their actions?
Fast paced and entertaining, For Better and Worse is a quick book that will keep you wondering what happens next. I wouldn't really call this a thriller and a few times it was a bit far fetched but it was still a good read that kept me entertained. A good book to add to your TBR list but not my favorite of the year.
Thank you @Netgalley and HARLEQUIN - MIRA for the Advance Reader Copy for the opportunity to review this book. Grab your copy on December 11th!
Margot Hunt’s second novel, For better and worse was a clever and entertaining edge of the seat read. I was actually blown away at one point and thought this would be the first book in a long time that I would stay up to finish in one sitting. I was also thinking it would rate a rare 5 stars from this reader. At least that was my impression of the first half. After an unforeseen bombshell, things started slipping and I decided it would not be such a late night after all.
From the beginning, I did not particular like either Natalie or Will – the two law students who met and married. Fast forward and they are set in their careers and have an 11yo son they both adore. But their marriage seems to have fallen into a stale rut and their perfect world starts to fall apart. So far pretty ho hum. Then their community is rocked when the principal at their son’s school comes under suspicion as a pedophile. At that point, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
Unfortunately, the momentum was slowed by a few faults in the execution that took away from both the intensity and believability of the storyline. Am still recommending this title as it was a very good read and will look forward to Hunt’s next outing as the door was certainly left open for a sequel. Am hoping Hunt can knock the next one out of the park.
I really enjoyed this and couldn’t put it down. It was so gripping and I really just wanted them to get away with Roberts murder but the net closing in on them made me feel really anxious! I did however wish for a time that Will would get a grip as he was really irritating me losing the plot but I suppose that’s a normal reaction to their situation!! Can’t wait for this to be published so I can share it with my book group. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and Orion for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you netgalley!
I wouldn’t have found Margot Hunt any other way, and what a loss that would be.
I enjoyed the idea of the book by the description alone.
I enjoyed the format of this book as opposed to the back and forth many books now take on.
This was a read in one sitting mind of novel....couldn’t put it down.
Pick it up, you will thank me!!!
Interesting psychological thriller that really kept me reading. The two protagonists were not at all likable - rather the opposite, in fact - but that actually seemed to work with this book. Recommended for other fans of this genre.
Natalie and Will Clark are a couple in their late 30s, and have a son in middle school. Their marriage is plugging along on autopilot when they find out that their son may have been hurt by a man they trusted. Natalie's experience as a criminal defense attorney has taught her that the American Criminal Justice system is not without its flaws. She comes to the conclusion that the only answer is killing the man who hurt her son. She thinks that her experience as a defense attorney will help her commit the perfect crime.
The premise of this book intrigued me from the start. While I will say that the book was a little bit heavy on the exposition at the beginning, once the plot took off about a third of the way in, I couldn't put it down. The narrative switches between characters in a very intriguing way that did not feel gimmicky, but actually served the story well. The ending was also very satisfying and I found myself wishing that the author would continue the story so I could see what happens next.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes psychological thrillers and thrillers in general.

This is a fast paced read. Natalie and Will meet at law school, on their 1st date theytalk about how clever they are and how they could plan and get off with murder. Fifteen years later, their son has been abused by the headmaster at his school, the rage Natalie feels towards her sons abuser leads her to planning how to murder him, she is a defence attorney and knows how the system works. On the night she iis putting her clever thought out plan into action something goes wrong and she has to call Will to come and help her.
Will finds it hard to act normal in the days that follow, his alibi doesn’t quite check out when he is questioned by the police, and he has another complication which is about to be outed. Meanwhile Natalie remains cool and collected. Can this clever duo of attorneys get off with murder.
This is my first book by this author but will look out for more, cleverly written and I liked the characters.
