love this book, characters were well developed. The plot had many twist and turns. Great read., cannot wait for the next book..
I really enjoyed this book! Well developed storyline & characters. Flowed nicely; kept me wanting to read more to find out what happens. Couldn't be put down!! Will recommend this one to everyone.
this book kept me up past my bed time - very unputdownable! lots of twists and turns and overall thoroughly enjoyable.
Will and Natalie were law students together, several years before the story begins. On their first date, way back when, they jokingly discussed how one could get away with murder; which I can tell you from personal experience, is not all that uncommon.
Flash forward - Natalie and Will are married; she is a defense attorney, and he is a corporate attorney. They have an eleven year old boy, named Charlie, whom they adore. Their world is utterly rocked when they discover someone has hurt Charlie. Nat brings up their first date "how to get away with murder" discussion. Will surmises that she must be kidding...
What would you do if someone hurt your child? How far would you go to protect him or her? That is the essence of this story, which is, indeed, fast paced, twisty, and completely riveting. Plan to zip through it in one or two sittings. FOR BETTER AND WORSE, touches on some really serious, heartbreaking issues, in a well written and thoughtful dual narrative of Will and Natalie. My absolute favorite thing about this book is Margot Hunt's wit; to read something that strikes you as hilarious (oh, dark humor!) in the midst of a really dreadful event, is perhaps, one of the greatest treats for a reader.
I loved this book and look forward to reading more by Marot Hunt!
Thank you NetGalley, Margot Hunt and Harlequin Digita,l for the ARC I received, in exchange for my honest and thoughtful review of FOR BETTER AND WORSE - Publication date is 11 December 18, and can be preordered on Amazon now.
I really enjoyed this book ! I read it in one day ! What would you do if someone did the unthinkable to your child ? Could you come up with the perfect murder ? Would you be able to go through with it ? Will your marriage survive ? This book was much better than I had hoped it would be. Great story, very well written. And a bit of a shocker of an ending ! Great book ! Enjoy !
This book was amazing. The author really brought you into the situation this couple faces and shows the turmoil and issues marriage can bring. This couple did terrible things, but some were for great reasons. I don't think I could do what this couple did, but I sure don't blame them for it. I can see why this is a decent solution in their grieve stricken minds. How it happens was a surprise and how they got out of it was an even bigger surprise. I definitely recommend this book!
If you're looking for a fantastic, fast-paced, dark thriller, this one is it!
Natalie and Will are married lawyers with a young son, Jacob. Soon after they find out the principal of Jacob's school is being questioned for molesting a student, they find out that their beloved son is also a victim of the principal.
Natalie decides to take justice into her own hand...plan and execute the perfect murder so that the principal can't hurt any other children. When things go awry, she has no choice but to ask for Will's help. Together they will do something that has many consequences on themselves and the people in their lives.
This was an excellent read, and my first book by Margot Hunt. I was very impressed with the scenes she created and the amount of tension that builds. It was very hard to put down to go to bed, and the ending...WOW! I will definitely be recommending this one to thriller fans.
Thanks to NetGalley, author Margot Hunt, and MIRA Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoy this genre, so I was excited to read an ARC of this upcoming release … and it didn’t disappoint.
How far would you go to protect your children? Is vigilante justice ever acceptable? These are just two of the questions Natalie and Will must answer in "For Better and Worse" when they find themselves in a situation that is a parent’s worst nightmare.
I was immediately drawn into the story, and the fast-pace kept me engaged the entire time. The story is divided into two parts and told from two POVs (Natalie and Will). The book isn’t the average “whodunnit” story. As the main characters are both attorneys, there is a large legal angle to the tale. I expected a bit more with the ending, and it was a bit abrupt, but it was a highly enjoyable book overall. I have never read anything by this author before, but I will certainly add her to my list of TBR author list.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.
I think that it’s going to be very hard for me to put into words why I did AND didn’t like this book. Mainly because it gives away too much of the plot when I do so and I’m not one for spoiling anything for any one.
First and foremost: The unrealistic ending struck me as odd. I know a lot of readers were probably hoping that this exact thing would happen but to me it was a sloppy and a rushed ending. One that I wouldn’t of cared to even happen had the author took more time on it. Rather than brushing it off to the side and skipping to an epilogue that was unnecessary, I wish it had been touched on more.
The plot was fine, really. I loved the vigilante mind set, and the determination the parents had but it was still a slow plot at best. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs though because being inside of these characters heads was my most favorite part. The author did a great job at persuading readers that what these two were feeing and doing was OKAY. Seeing their struggles and feelings really helped me put myself in their positions.
The epilogue, as mentioned above, wasn’t something I particularly enjoyed. To me, this is a book that didn’t need one. It was added for a mysterious element shock factors that I just didn’t care for. Is she going really? Or is she not? I honestly didn’t care.
And then there was Will, who I had a really hard time warming up to (for obvious reasons). I did like seeing him at the part that mattered most though, the turning point, the climax, the moment of action. Because for once there were actual feelings being evoked from him. He was still a hard character for me to connect to.
The murder plot was not executed neatly IMO. It could have been done in other ways but by the end of the story I felt happy that I took the chance and read it. Although a lot of the story was predictable and just not realistic, I always love a good vigilante story.
Margot Hunt has produced a fine thriller with For Better and Worse. Good characters and the plot holds interest.
I could not put this book down it was addictive & all tied up nicely at the end. Loved the other book by this author too. Would highly recommend thanks for the preview.
There are page turning “unputdownable” psychological thrillers that don’t live up to the hype, and there are ones labeled as such that do. Put this book squarely in the latter category. The first half of the novel is told from Natalie’s point of view, and the author builds the tension in a way that is completely natural. The action unfolds methodically and at a reasonable pace. At the halfway mark, the author switches to Will’s perspective, and everything really takes off. The way the two halves of the book are written from each character’s point of view gives the reader a well-rounded picture of the situation the two find themselves in. And as the last reveal occurs at the end, I could practically hear the “dun dun DUN” music. A very solid 4.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin-Mira, and the author for a digital ARC in return for an honest review.
Once upon a time there were two law students, Natalie and Will, who were out on a first date.
Natalie was not sure if Will was really her “type” until he started a conversation about how two lawyers, namely, the two of them, should be able to plan and execute the “perfect murder”.
Over tossed salads, they tossed around ideas.
By the time the entrees were finished, and the last of the red wine had been poured, they were clinking glasses and toasting “to getting away with it”..
Fast forward 15 years...Will and Natalie are married and the vows of “For better and Worse” are about to be tested.
Their son Jacob’s principal, has been accused of molesting a troubled student. And, when Natalie talks with Jacob about it, she learns that he has been a victim too. As a criminal defense attorney, she knows how grueling a trial would be for their son. She will not allow that. But the principal must not be allowed to get away with this.
Is it time to “test the theory” that they had discussed on their first date?
Are Natalie and Will as smart as they think they are?
As in her first novel, “Best Friends Forever”, Margot Hunt has written well developed characters that feel like people who could be your friends and neighbors. She writes about marriage and friendship in such an honest way, you almost forget this is fiction....
I was GRIPPED from the first word till the last. She is an author who is fast becoming one of my FAVORITES!
I hope she is hard at work on a third novel!!
I would like to thank Netgalley, Harlequin-Mira and Margot Hunt for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for a candid review!
This mystery/thriller will be available on Dec. 11, 2018 and can be pre-ordered NOW!!
The unthinkable has happened to Natalie and Will’s son, what can they do about it? A slightly naïve Will trusts the judicial system to handle things, but Nat refuses to put her son through the wringer. She’s defended clients for similar charges, gone after victims on the stand in court and can’t bear to see her son to suffer that way. What else can they do? Being the criminal law genius that she is, Natalie decides to dish out her own version of justice.
I love how the author created doubt throughout the book. Doubt regarding the perpetrator’s guilt, doubt surrounding the feasibility of Natalie’s plan, doubt over whether the couple could pull off the perfect crime or will they be caught.
I could have done without the open-ended last chapter, but otherwise this book was a zippy little read that I kept close at hand until I could finish. 4 stars!
Isn't it fun when you start a book and you decide you really like it?! I have to say, the beginning of this book did not grab me, but about 15% in, I was hooked. I would smile when I looked forward to my reading time. I was happy that the book took a turn for the better. A great story line, very well written; this is a page turner. The twists keep coming and knock you back each time... you will not want to put it down.
I highly recommend this book!
I would like to thank NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I love the moral questions the premise alone brings up, could you kill someone if they hurt your child? I know my husband and I have had several conversations about this very subject and we both agree it could be tempting. That makes us sound no better than Nat and Will haha, but honestly the thought alone of someone molesting one of my kids makes my blood boil and I’m just saying that I can see why one would contemplate it.
Much like her previous book this is a lighter thriller, almost like Chick Lit with a dark edge. There is nothing super graphic or gory here, it really examines behavior instead and follows this couple as they grapple with really tough questions and choices. I’m not sure I can really say that I liked either Nat or Will but I did empathize with them and could even mostly understand why they made the choices that they did. They seemed realistic and genuine, just an average couple put in extraordinary situations doing the best they can for their son. While they seemed fairly realistic I do want to say that parts of this were pretty implausible, so fair warning.
I completely binge read this one and would once again recommend for a weekend or a vacation read. The pacing was incredibly fast and I finished in just a few hours as I just had to know what would happen to this family. Awesome domestic suspense that I can recommend for anyone looking for a lighter style read that still delves into the dark side of humanity.
For Better and Worse in three words: Binge-worthy, Addictive and Quick.
Wow! This is was my kind of book. I read a lot of phycological thrillers and Margot Hunt knows what she is doing. I was really interested in this synopsis and it did disappoint. I don't even know how to review this book without giving little things away.
Character Development: Great!
Atmosphere: Great!
Writing: Great!
Plot: Great!
Intrigue: From start to finish.
Logic: Yes!
Enjoyment: Yes!
I would highly recommend this book and this solidifies Margot Hunt as one of my favorite authors.
This book hits hard and deals with a terrifying real life situation. This isn't my usual type of book but Hunt does a great job writing which makes it hard to stop reading!
This story was so captivating from the start. Husband and wife, both attorneys plan a perfect murder to get away with it. Will they pull it off? From the beginning to the end it was difficult to put down. This is a must read.
I loved this book, it kept me glued to my chair with Kindle in my hand, barely giving me time to think or even take a deep breath. It was a complete enthralling ride!!
When crime hits their family, the lawyer couple, Nat and Will, starting with Nat, end up doing something which was to be almost perfect, but ultimately was not. And the story continues on with them under the microscopic eye of the investigative team, the cops finding major holes in their alibi.
My first book by author Margot Hunt, had me wondering how could they pull it off. Nat, being a criminal lawyer, was a cool cucumber. She had me astonished at her nerves of steel. At the opposite end, there was Will, trembling like a leaf and drinking by the buckets, rather always hungover, who nearly confessed.
The blurb did tell the story, but it was the writing which pulled me in with the vagaries of the scenes. It was fast paced, Will made me nearly hate him with his secret, Nat kept me riveted. The ending was almost unbelievable. Another thing that niggled me was I didn't think Nat researched or planned well to pull it off perfectly, and she was a criminal lawyer. She could have thought of a better plan. It was slipshod.
On the whole, a fabulous thriller which had me thinking - can a perfect crime be committed?
